Happy Vols Win A Road Series & Lady Vols Have New Hoops Coach Championship Monday:

Championship Monday: Tennessee could EASILY be playing right now after watching Purdue dispatch NC State over the weekend. That could've been the Vols in that spot.

Championship Monday Barnes Vs Bruce: We'll have some fun on this Championship Monday asking you who you got in our own championship of modern era Tennessee coaches. The choices are simple. It's either Bruce Pearl who lit the flame or Rick Barnes who's done a marvelous job. I look forward to taking your calls on this plus getting your team to pull for tonight. Plus ... We'll take your temperature on the Lady Vols Hoops hire..

'T Club Team:

Random musings as the Baseball Vols win a series on the road and the Lady Vol basketball program gets a new head coach:

VOLS ANNIHILATE AUBURN'S PITCHING ... In winning the series at the Loveliest Village. Eight different Volunteers sent 14 balls flying out of Plainsman Park in scoring 36 runs and run-ruling the Tigers on Saturday and Sunday. Christian Moore was ridiculous, going 7-for-14 for three homers and as many doubles. All of this was accomplished without Billy Amick in the lineup for the second straight weekend.

Click to Collins Insurance Agency
THE ONLY BLEMISH WAS A BIG ONE ... And that was A.J. Causey's disastrous start on Friday night. Causey has now given up 15 earned runs and only lasted 3.3 innings in his last two SEC starts. Tony Vols and Frank Anderson will no doubt make a change on Friday night as a struggling but dangerous LSU team comes to The Lindsey Friday night.

DREW BEAM HAD A GREAT DAY ... Saturday in blanking Auburn until the 7th inning. This Tennessee pitching staff is very much a work in progress but several pitchers had good outings over the weekend. The cloud hanging over the pitching situation right now is continued arm troubles for A.J. Russell. Friday nights would look a whole lot better with him starting but we may not have that at all the rest of the season. Hope I'm wrong.

DOCTOR DANNY MAKES HIS HIRE ... For the Lady Vol basketball program as he will bring young Kim Caldwell to the podium tomorrow after one very successful season at Marshall and seven as head coach of her alma mater Glenville State. A native of Parkersburg, WV, she played for Division II Glenville State in her home state and won the DII national title two years ago.

CALDWELL WON'T BREAK THE BANK ... Her starting salary is $750,000, a hefty raise from what she was making in Huntingdon but well below what we paid for Kellie Harper's mediocrity. The UTAD is paying her buyout of $600,000. Her teams play high octane on offense and press on defense. Her one and only Marshall team was fourth in the nation in scoring at 85.3 ppg, behind Iowa, LSU and South Carolina. She breaks the Pat Summitt protege streak but doesn't break the gender line of four head coaches in Lady Vol history who are all women. A nice tie in is she won the Pat Summitt Trophy for coaching when she won the DII title.

MY HUNCH IS THIS HIRE ... Will definitely be an upgrade over the last two head coaches, no offense to them. The fan base will probably respond positively to the uptempo pace and production. Obviously, Caldwell has to get into the transfer market immediately and build her first Tennessee roster. I'm inclined to give The Doctor a thumbs up on this hire, though I don't know what her ceiling is going to be.

I HAD SOME FUN WITH THE DEAN ... In Friday's blog by calling attention to his hype of Nico during spring practice. However, the intel he is getting is the same I'm getting from insiders. This offense is looking more like the 2022 Vols, starting with Nico at quarterback and a better and deeper wide receiver corps than last year. A nice development has been local product DeSean Bishop at running back.

Click to The Garza Law Firm
KAREN WEEKLY'S 4TH-RANKED TEAM ... Maintained its lead in the SEC by winning two of three against #3 Georgia at The Sherri. Karlyn Pickens got the dub on Friday and Payton Gottshall on Sunday. They are 1-2 in ERA in the SEC in league play.

Orange Throat'

VOLS ANNIHILATE AUBURN'S PITCHING: A great point by you Throatie on no Amick, no problem on the road in the SEC. Tennessee was hammering baseballs. Imagine being in Butch Thompson's mind when he watched the 9 hitting catcher go 3-3 with 2 homeruns, 7 RBI's and 4 runs scored on Sunday. If they would've gotten a decent start Friday that easily could've been a sweep. This team needs average SEC pitching to be dangerous. Getting to average depending on the game is going to be a chore. We'll elaborate ...

THE ONLY BLEMISH WAS A BIG ONE ... Causey is a main Cause for concern. When you get spotted 3 runs in that league in the first you can't come out and have that start on Friday night. Tennessee jumped out to a 3-0 lead and it was 5-3 Auburn before you could blink. Obviously Tennessee has a lot to consider going forward with managing this staff. Can they keep going down the road that is Causing us agita? We'll see. I will credit Causey with at least fighting but that's only going to carry you so far in a league as unforgiving as this one when it comes to the bats a non power pitcher encounters. If Causey can't locate it can get away from him quickly. Give Tony & Frank credit for getting him out of there quickly.

Click to Performance Medicine!
DREW BEAM HAD A GREAT DAY .. 98 pitches covering 7 innings with 8 strikeouts (nice to see this) only 3 hits and one earned run. That's about as good as it's going to get on the road against an offense like that. Auburn has some guys that can hammer the baseball. Beam might be Tennessee's MVP with that series saving performance.

DOCTOR DANNY MAKES HIS HIRE ... I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE this hire. The last time a youngish AD reached for a 94 foot run and gun basketball coach from Marshall to the SEC happened at Florida ... And the results were incredible. Am I calling the shot that Caldwell becomes Billy Donovan? No ... Of course not. But there are some similarities here. Caldwell is a splash of cold water on the face of a Lady Vols program that needs one. It's time to wake up. Tennessee didn't have a coaching tree of Pat Summitt to harvest. Kara Lawson wasn't even interviewed in this cycle as we predicted. She was never getting in it.

Click to YMCA of East Tennessee!
Danny White could've gone the conventional route. And as John Adams opined in Knoxville News Sentinel, Tennessee wasn't going to get any of the top 5 coaches in the sport. Against that backdrop you either hire the next best boring, conventional coach available or you go high risk, high reward. Thus you turn to an unproven attractive candidate from the mid major ranks. I think Caldwell's style of play is going to be well received by Tennessee fans that want to get back in the game. The Lady Vols are going to be must see once she gets a group of players in here to play this style. I love the hire. It's a risk well worth taking and it gives me early Billy Donovan vibes.

CALDWELL WON'T BREAK THE BANK ...But I Have An Issue With The Deal: It's been reported in the media locally that the contract for Caldwell contains a head scratching clause that would make her the highest paid coach in the sport in the event that she wins a national championship. Now picture this ... Tennessee gets to a Final Four and a coach that's not making $1 million is staring at easily quadrupling to quintupling her salary with a couple of wins. Why would Tennessee's AD agree to this? Why bet against yourself.

Besides, isn't the goal at Tennessee to win a national championship? If you want to put a clause like that in there write one up that says Caldwell would get paid commensurate with the coaches that have won ONE national title. That would be more like it. Why put a clause in that the AD ultimately would probably be cheering against. I'm just trying to keep it real here. Could you imagine if she goes from $750,000 to over $4.5 million overnight? That makes zero sense to me on any level and should've been struck from this deal.

Finally:

Who You Got Tonight? In the Annoying National Championship Of The World? Purdue with Zach Edey and that fan base is fairly tough to take. Then again Dan Hurley makes me look subtle. What a damn obnoxious yankee clown he is. Both teams get away with murder when it comes to officiating. Something has to give.

Caitlyn Clark Doesn't Need A Championship To Be The Best: She blazed her own trail rather than doing the modern era team jumping thing. She wasn't surrounded by 5 star talent at every position like Brianna Stewart and her ilk. So what if she never won it. She got Iowa ... IOWA to TWO NATIONAL TITLE GAMES ... And she carried the sport for the last year and a half in doing so. She's the GOAT. Deal with it haters. Deal with it. There's not a player alive capable of lifting the sport the way she did.

Tomorrow At TClub.Team: Beano drops his winner of Barnes Vs Bruce & the reasons why ... Matt Dixon looks back on the road series win over Auburn.

'T Club Team:

Random musings as we turn most of our our focus to Tennessee Baseball but take one last swing at putting this basketball season into historical perspective:

BEST UT BASKETBALL SEASON EVER? The answer is yes. There are only two candidates because only two Volunteer teams have won three NCAA tourney games and advanced to within one game of that elusive Final Four. Bruce Pearl's 2010 team was the first to get that far but didn't win the SEC regular season title. Rick Barnes' 2024 Vols did, so that's the tie-breaker.

THE NCAA DIDN'T GET SERIOUS ABOUT THE TOURNEY ... Until 1980 when the field was expanded to 48 and the modern era really started in 1985 with the 64-team bracket. It is enlightening to research the history of the tournament in order to understand the dysfunction of collegiate athletics presently and how slow and plodding the industry has always been. Because of this, you really have to put the Ray Mears Era in its own box. Coach Mears did great things at Tennessee but he was ahead of the sport in his league and at the national level. If he hadn't gotten sick, he would have done greater things.

Click to Advent Electric!
TENNESSEE DIDN'T GET SERIOUS UNTIL 2006 ... And it can be argued that the hiring of Bruce Pearl from Wisconsin-Milwaukee was more luck than making a huge commitment to the sport. Brother Beano calls it getting "Bruce Pearl Lucky." We reverted to the mean with Cuonzo Martin and Donnie Tyndall. The late Mike Hamilton made the Pearl hire but also made the Cuonzo hire and Dave Hart picked Tyndall, who might have been real good but his past caught up with him. Hart then pulled the best hire of his Tennessee tenure by grabbing Rick Barnes when Texas cut him loose. As Tony likes to say, Bruce started the fire and Ricky from Hickry added hickory logs to it and has just produced the school's best season.

FREDDIE D. IS THE LATEST FOUR-STAR FRESHMAN FLAMEOUT ... In the UT basketball program but it matters less in this new era of player mobility. Dilione and the Tennessee program weren't a good fit and the young man will no doubt find a better match.

VOLTELLOS ARE ON THE ROAD ... at Auburn And Frank Anderson's pitching crew will try to lower the staff ERA after Charlie Condon and his Georgia teammates laid waste to it for the first two games last weekend. Anderson's staff is now 9th in the league with a 6.29 ERA but the good news is Auburn's staff is 12th at 7.85 (keep in mind I only deal in SEC games stats from now on). No surprise that A.J. Russell won't be available once again.

DID YOU HAVE BLAKE BURKE ... Leading the SEC in hitting (.432) at the 30% mark in the season on your singo card? What a turnaround for the big first baseman from California! Dylan Dreiling leads the league in RBI with 18.

I WAS DEAD WRONG ... On Doctor Danny's disposition on letting Kellie Harper have another mediocre season before calling it a day. Now The Doctor is the dog that has caught the Lady Vol bus ... we'll see what he does with it. The bar is obviously low and he has a strong track record of hires not only at Tennessee but in his previous stops at Buffalo and Central Florida.

ADD $2.2 MILLION TO FULMER'S TAB ... For his uninspired hire of Harper, who had already failed previously at N.C. State and was at Missouri State when he made the hire. His other significant hire, the amazingly stupid Jeremy Pruitt, didn't get a buyout but he cost the athletics department millions more. No offense to our Hall of Fame coach.

PARTING SHOT ... Based on The Dean's hype of Nico this week during spring practice, I don't know why the Heisman voters need to wait until the season actually is played. Go ahead and mark your ballots for our sophomore QB and be done with it. I do think Nico is going to have a huge season if he stays healthy but Tone has been a bit over the top this week ... no offense.

ICYMI from Tuesday (4/2/24): Tennessee Recruiting Report Presented By Zen Sports Online at Zen Sports Dot Com ...
'X' Says
'Last week during BasketballVols’ run to the Elite 8, Tennessee picked up some good news on the football recruiting front. Ethan Utley, a defensive lineman from Ensworth High School in Nashville, announced his commitment to Tennessee. Utley is a big pickup for Tennessee literally and figuratively. Utley is 6’3” 275 lbs. He has a big frame and actually looks a little skinny for a defensive lineman. He could easily add 20 to 30 lbs. of bodyweight. Tennessee has a number of defensive linemen who fit that size weight profile. Utley, like many a Tennessee commitment, is a multi-sport athlete. He competes in basketball as well as being a member of the Ensworth track & field team.

Follow Us On Twitter:
@TonyBasilio
Utley is Tennessee’s 7th public commitment of the recruiting cycle. Tennessee’s early recruiting class is rated as the 10th best in the country. Utley is rated as a 4-star prospect. He is the third in-state prospect to publicly commit to Tennessee. Utley chose Tennessee over Texas, Michigan, LSU, Georgia. and Florida.

The Utley commitment has fallen off the radar because of Tennessee’s basketball run. However, I would refer to him as an early in the recruiting cycle statement pick up for Tennessee. He was a highly sought after defensive line prospect, at a position of need for Tennessee, coveted by major college programs from all over the country, who appeared to be headed elsewhere to play his college football but a prospect you could not afford to lose to another school.

I spent some time watching some sophomore and junior highlights. He is a much different looking player from his sophomore to his junior season. He was more disruptive, better in getting off blocks and used his hands far better. I would expect similar growth and improvement from his junior year to his senior year.

Utley's best football is in front of him. He is raw and gets by with being bigger and more athletic than the competition right now. He will learn to play to the whistle on every play when he gets to Tennessee, or he’ll hear Coach Garner screaming at him in his dreams. Last season he was in on 35 tackles, 7 tackles for loss, and 4 forced fumbles.

What Next for Tennessee (Recruiting) I’m watching the following in state prospects. Any one of the three who announce their commitment this spring you would have to like Tennessee's chances.

Cam Sparks, the Baylor School, Chattanooga. #1 athlete/prospect in state. Coveted by most every SEC school. Physically, he is built like an outside linebacker who runs like a wide receiver.

Radarious Jackson, Sheffield High School Memphis. Tall rangy athletic wide receiver with speed to stretch the field. Could push George McIntyre and Cam Sparks for #1 in state prospect by the end of the season.

Duane Morris, running back Oakland High School, Murfreesboro. Morris has gone from relative anonymity to amassing over 30 offers in a matter of months. Another prospect coveted by every SEC team. Tennessee seems to have the inside track for now.

Others I’m watching (Recruiting)

Jaelyne Matthews offensive tackle Toms River NJ. “Could be” one of the first offensive lineman prospects on Tennessee’s to come off Tennessee’s recruiting board. Matthews is regarded as one of the top offensive tackles in the nation. He is a fringe top 100 prospect. His top schools are Penn State, Miami, Georgia, and Tennessee.

Lagonza Hayward, Tombs County High School, Lyons, Georgia. Hayward is a top 100 safety prospect. Tennessee is a legitimate threat to beat Georgia, Alabama, and Florida State. Tennessee has been recruiting Hayward for a year and he has been to campus multiple times.

Tennessee Spring Practice: It’s hard to believe spring practice is almost over. 7 practices in. There is good and not so good. Here are some highlights and concerns.

Tennessee Offense

Quarterback: Nico hasn’t disappointed. Wow ...

Running Back: Losing Cam Seldon who was the solid number 2 running back behind Dylan Sampson to a shoulder issue is concerning. Only one running back behind Seldon has suited up for a college game let alone carry the football. Tennessee will look into the portal for an experienced running back who can provide depth and knows how to block.

Offensive Line: Tennessee pretty much knows what it has in its top 6 offensive linemen. There is a second tier of six linemen consisting of redshirt and true freshman that are getting the majority of the practice reps. Practicing against a defensive line that ranks as one of the best in the conference has been daunting but so far, they haven’t backed down. There is another group of offensive linemen running third team who have been passed over.

Wide Receiver: Thornton and Brazzell have been impressive. The freshmen Matthews will challenge for playing time. Could we see more 4 receiver sets this season than in the past?

Tight End: Maybe most surprising group through 7 practices. Davis is healthy and received praise. The transfers are willing blockers and are going to help.

Tennessee Defense:

Defensive Line: Tennessee has a problem most defensive coordinators would love to have. Tennessee literally goes 11 deep along the defensive line. Too, transfer Jaxson Moi, from Stanford, has been one of the biggest surprises of the spring. He is going to be a fixture on the defensive line this fall.

Linebackers: The concern is 3 linebackers who will be counted on this fall are either limited or not practicing. Sophomores Jerimiah Tellander and DeMarcus Smith have taken advantage of their opportunity. Both will have expanded roles this fall.

Cornerbacks and Safety: This shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone. Tennessee is faster and more athletic in the secondary than any other time in Coach Heupel's tenure at Tennessee. Young players like Rickey Gibson, Boo Carter, Jourdan Thomas are going to become household names . They just need experience and the patience of the coaching staff. No more trauma bonding to upper classmen.

Thanks for reading

Peace

The Vols did what they were expected to do against UConn. There's not really much to say about that game. The game this Saturday in Columbia, Missouri will decide whether or not this season is a failure in my opinion. If they Vols lose, they are staring at 8-4 and probably the Gator Bowl. Maybe Reliaquest..... [more]

The Vols are coming back to Neyland Stadium and I am returning after a discretionary bye week. I'll be honest with you. This year it seems like I've been writing the same preview over and over because the formula to win has been the same pretty much every SEC game. I didn't want to sound like a broken record so I needed a bit of a break from that.

I'll start with some general observations..... [more]
