Huge weekend. This is why you go to school here! If you're a student at UT, it's not about academics. Be honest. It's about SEC football and all its trappings. And NOTHING says Southern college football louder than Tennessee Alabama. NOTHING.

I'm feeling a classic football game tomorrow. In Tennessee's gauntlet thus far they've played an unforgettable game with Florida plus one for the ages with Georgia while last week’s A&M contest felt like 5 football games. So, why not go out of the gauntlet with the band and dare I say save the best for last. This Tennessee team (as you'll hear today from Orange Throat is more than capable. An ever optimistic Jerry Colquitt will paint a picture of hope in his Film Study synopsis while 'X' will handle the weekend from a future (prospects) standpoint. Welcome to football Friday at Tonybasilio.com

Before we go any further..Thanks to you for the love in the tip jar! Thanks to all that came out to Roger's birthday yesterday. Yawl made that kid feel like a million bucks! Great stuff!

Thanks to all that came out to see Fountain City Ramblers last night at Clancy's. We had a terrific time rockin' in the Bama weekend.

Orange Throat is Whooly Throat today!!!

Orange Throat
'Basillville:

Random musings as we celebrate the great tradition of the Third Saturday:

PEYTON RETURNS: Peyton Manning will see his second straight Tennessee game tomorrow. He is town for the weekend and is sure to be lobbied by both the David Blackburn and Jon Gilbert camps on the athletics director vacancy. Actually, the Jon Gilbert camp is a small one but not insignificant in behalf of the former Alabama administrator. Our belief is Manning is a strong lean toward Blackburn.

RUMOR MILL: Tony mentioned earlier in the week on the show and we believe ETSU president Brian Noland will not let his name go forward in the UTK chancellor search process ... Former five-star WR Preston Williams never discarded his diva behavior during his brief UT career. He did not have the respect of his teammates ... SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey was taken aback by the backlash and criticism over the LSU-Florida postponement, and let LSU force the game to switch to Baton Rouge for Nov. 19. LSU AD Joe Alleva is under fire and needed to get a short-term win over the outgoing Florida AD Jeremy Foley, who blasted Alleva in the media yesterday.

HOW DOES SHOOP SHORE UP HIS DEFENSE? Bob Shoop's defense has built dealt blow after blow from a personnel standpoint this season. There are conflicting points of view as to whether LB Darrin Kirkland Jr., is going to be back against Alabama. No offense to him, but Elliott Berry was fourth team at the start of the season and will probably start tomorrow. DT Danny O'Brien's dismissal hurts the rotation situation measurably at DT. Kahlil McKenzie is coming on and Alexis Johnson now has to be worked in to the picture. Shoop also has big problems is the secondary. Cam Sutton's return is several weeks away, at the least. Corners Emmanuel Moseley, Justin Hunter and freshman Baylen Buchanan are mostly mediocre right now. Malik Foreman has a flair for the dramatic, both good and bad, and suffered a shoulder injury in the A&M game. Our safeties are solid football players but not great athletes, although Todd Kelly Jr. is a ball hawk and there is a place for him. Shoop and DB coach Willie Martinez have chosen not to work Nigel Warrior into the safety picture as of yet. Fellow freshman Marquill Osborne is healthy now and could start to work himself in to some meaningful playing time at either corner or nickel.

NONSENSE ON HURD: One of the unfortunate by products of our digital age is any moron with a smart phone or computer can have their voice heard. The rumors on Jalen Hurd are ludicrous. Apparently, he has made good progress on the concussion he suffered at Georgia and may see some playing time tomorrow. This kid is an absolute warrior and tomorrow is his kind of game. Here's hoping he comes back with a vengeance.

WILL THIS GAME BE LIKE LAST YEAR? The Volunteers played the Crimson Tide off their feet at Tuscaloosa before bowing, 19-14 last year, and even threw a major scare into them with a four-play, 75-yard touchdown drive to take a 14-13 lead with 5:49 to play. Josh Dobbs hit a 27-yard pass to Josh Smith and a 34-yarder to Josh Malone as the Vols sailed down the field. The Vols outrushed Alabama, 132-117 but the Tide had the edge in passing yards as QB Jake Coker was 20 of 27 for 247 yards. In fact, Coker hit two big passes in the winning TD drive, 29 yards to ArDarius Stewart and big 15-yard completion to Calvin Ridley on a 3rd and 6. This Alabama team has the same type of awesome defense, especially against the run, but OC Joey Freshwater (aka Lane Kiffin) now has a mobile QB in freshman Jalen Hurts. The Tide doesn't have a Derrick Henry established yet but have several talented running backs. Freshwater is certain to have a board full of good play calls to get the ball to Stewart, Ridley and TE O.J. Howard. All three are future NFL stars.

GLASS HALF FULL: We believe the narrow pathway to victory in this game for the Vols lies with the play of Hurts and the Vol receivers against the Alabama secondary. Hurts has gotten it done on the road at Ole Miss and Arkansas, but those places ain't Neyland Stadium on the Third Saturday with both teams in the Top 10 for the first time since Bill Clinton was POTUS. The Volunteer defense has a big matchup challenge in the passing game but our front can play with these guys and put pressure on Hurts. The UT offense builds off the production displayed at A&M and hits some big plays in the passing game and Josh Dobbs does his magic on the ground as well. And, Tennessee wins the turnover margin.

GLASS HALF EMPTY: This team is drained from The Gauntlet and can't hang in there for four quarters with the best team in the country. Alabama comes in much healthier and have had a much more balanced schedule the past three weeks. Freshwater's offense strikes early and often and our gallant Volunteers can't keep pace. Our secondary looks like the girls fleeing the sorority houses tonight when Kiffin shows up with the dealer car he wrecked when he was at UT.

Click to The Garza Law Firm
FORECAST: On paper, it is hard to muster much hope for our Volunteers in this matchup, but on paper, this Tennessee team should be no better than 3-3. Injuries have depleted the Vol defense to the point it's hard to argue it is any better than last year at this time. As we've outlined, the obvious key to this game is the play of freshman QB Hurts for Bama. The 6-2, 209-pounder out of the Houston suburb of Channelview, TX was a four-star recruit but 247Sports had him #177 in the country and UT freshman Jarrett Guarantano, who is redshirting, rated #77. Hurts took over in Alabama's opener with USC and has been in charge ever since. The hope is the Neyland Stadium crowd and the Vol defensive front can rattle him, but has been rock solid in road games at Ole Miss and Arkansas. Vegas has this game at about Alabama 35, Tennessee 22. Hard to argue, except we will. The Tide has a great defense but they have given up 43 points and 421 yards passing to Ole Miss and 30 points and 400 yards passing to Arkansas. Mike Debord looks like an OC who gets better as a season wears on. He had the best game of his 19-game UT career at College Station. We're going to get wooly and say the character and talent of this team gets it done when it is least expected. Aaron Medley kicks a late FG and the goalposts get carried down Cumberland Avenue, 35-34 Vols, and the Smartway/Garza Law Firm Fifth Quarter goes until Tuesday, at least.

FOR AMUSEMENT ONLY (13-8 vs. the spread) Tennessee-Texas A&M's 83 points easily bested the total of 55 but we went one week too many with the dreadful South Carolina Gamecocks. First of all, we're going to put our tout credibility where our mouth is and take the Vols and 13 and the Over on a total of 57.5. We like a rested Florida team -13.5 at home vs. Missouri, with QB Jake Del Rio back. And, we're going to take the Under on Southern Miss at LSU at 58.

Well Throaty...I love it when you get whooly....Why not? We are witnessing a team that doesn't quit. Bama has to lose a game sooner or later. Why not now? I'm living in the magic this football season. I also love your adaptation of IGYBA....Classic...

'X', presented by Smoothie King, & your Smartway/Garza Law Firm 5th Quarter Fan Reaction is next. Huge weekend recruiting wise for the Vols. Lots of top prospects will be on display. Give the kids a Go Vols if you see em out and about.

'X' Says
'October is a month that I’m really indifferent about when it comes to recruiting . I don’t get overly concerned if recruiting seems slow nor do I get terribly upbeat if Tennessee seems to have a fair amount of momentum this time of year.

The traditional view is a kid picks a college because of the school, the environment and the academics. We all realize this isn’t correct. Kids pick colleges because of relationships built with head coaches and assistant coaches. The proliferation of head coaching and assistant coaching changes in both college and professional football have simply made recruiting especially this time of year - more uncertain than ever.

Personal thoughts aside. Tennessee have reason to feel optimistic. Tennessee has and is continuing to position itself for a nice close to its 2017 class. Tennessee has 25 prospects publicly committed. The class now is rated a one of the top ten in the country. Tennessee can do better though.

At literally every position, Tennessee has a very real opportunity to upgrade its 2017 talent compared to the talent of the kids currently committed. Unfortunately, that means parting ways with kids that have pledged their commitment to your program. Tennessee is back to becoming relevant again in college football. Frankly, cutting committed kids where you can upgrade is just one of those spoils of success.

Tennessee hosted a couple of official visitors for the Florida game but Alabama weekend is the first major official visit weekend of the 2017 recruiting cycle for Tennessee.

Tennessee is scheduled to host five official visitors and a highly touted group of unofficial visitors. Saturday will see many 2017 committed prospects on hand as well.

A thumbnail sketch of each official and unofficial visitor is provided below.

Lamont Wade , Cornerback. Right off the top you star gazers will love this. Lamont Wade is a five-star prospect. The consensus across all recruiting services is Lamont Wade is the top high school cornerback in the country. Tennessee doesn’t recruit to recruiting service ratings but there is little doubt Lamont Wade is the top defensive back target on their board. He is smaller than most defensive backs Tennessee has been recruiting of late standing only 5’10”. However, he possesses exceptional ball skills, tremendous speed and is he is an explosive athlete. Rivals at last check has Wade rated as the overall 9th best prospect in the country.

Tennessee is in great shape with Wade. Tennessee has to withstand an official visit Wade has scheduled to Alabama later this season. Wade is from Clairton, PA. While distance doesn’t appear to be a concern, ensuring the parents are comfortable with distance issues could be a prevailing factor in his decision. Wade has already been on campus for the Appalachian State and Florida games as an unofficial visitor.

Chris Henderson, defensive back Miami, Florida. Henderson recently decommitted from Miami and re-opened his recruitment. Though most Florida analysts believe he ends up at the University of Florida, Henderson’s relationship with Vol assistant Larry Scott has gotten Tennessee’s foot in the door. Henderson is a tall, lean and long cornerback. Henderson has been timed in the forty at 4.35. He has offers from the likes of Alabama, FSU, Miami, LSU, Southern California, and too many more names to mention.

DJ Matthews, 6’0” 180 LB wide receiver /athlete from Jacksonville, FL. Matthews committed to Florida State well over a year ago but right now Matthews seems to be trending toward Tennessee and away from Florida State. Matthews is rated as a 4 star prospect and a top 100 prospect in the country. He is a playmaker with the ball in his hands and you can see why schools like FSU, Alabama, LSU and others are recruiting him.

Jerry Drake, offensive lineman. Drake is a 6’6” 315 lb. offensive line prospect from Palm Beach Gardens. Tennessee has been working on getting a visit from Drake since the summer and their efforts have finally paid off. The recruiting services have mixed feelings about Drake as a prospect. Some service shave him rated as a 3 star prospect. Others rated him as a 4 star. I go by offer lists. The fact that Drake has an offers from SEC west powers like Alabama and LSU tell me all I need to know.

Jonathan Garvin, defensive end. Garvin stands 6’4” 225 lbs. from Lake Worth, Florida. I believe Tennessee is in process of remaking its defensive end targets for the 2017 class. Jonathan Garvin is another Florida prospect Larry Scott has Tennessee involved with. Garvin is a big bodied prospect who can easily add more weight. Garvin is an explosive rush end and will be a handful to deal with if he maintains his speed as he is gaining weight. Garvin holds 20 plus offers and I would expect him to receive more.

I think you are beginning to see a theme emerge. Tennessee is significantly invested in maintaining its presence in Florida.

Unofficial Visitors:

The list of unofficial visitors is impressive. Some of these kids are making their way back to campus - at their own expense - for the third or fourth time since the summer.

Trey Smith, offensive lineman Jackson, Tennessee. ESPN rates Smith the top prospect in the country at any position. He is top offensive lineman on Tennessee’s board to be sure. Smith is due to take an official visit to Tennessee later in the season. He is set to announce his decision in December and enroll in school in January. I hesitate to call Tennessee Smith’s leader because Alabama, Ole Miss, Ohio State and other schools have been relentless in their pursuit of Smith. But, Tennessee is recruiting Smith as hard as any prospect on their board right now.

Click to Performance Medicine!
Rutger Reitmaier, defensive tackle from Nashville, Tennessee. Reitmaier, a top ten prospect in the state of Tennessee, committed to Oregon earlier this year much to the dismay of the Tennessee staff. He remains committed to Oregon but Tennessee has never quit recruiting him. The uncertain situation with the direction of the Oregon program has resulted in Reitmaier taking a second look at other schools including Tennessee. There is no doubt Tennessee was disappointed when Reitmaier committed to Oregon. He is higher rated on Tennessee’s defensive tackle than a couple of kids currently on the commitment list at the defensive line position.

Cam Akers, running back. Akers is one of the top running backs in the country. I don’t believe anyone really knows where Akers’ stands in regards to school choices. Generally speaking, the three schools you hear him mentioned with are Florida State, LSU, Ole Miss, and Tennessee. LSU has a tenuous coaching situation and Ole Miss has NCAA trouble. Akers is an early enrollee and I believe in mid-October this is a Tennessee -FSU fight.

Darrian Felix, running back Fort Myers Florida. Felix is built more along the lines of Alvin Kamara and Carlin Fils-Aime. He is fast and excellent in open space.

Matthew Butler is a strong side defensive end/ defensive tackle from Garner, NC. I watch Butler’s film and scratch my head why he isn’t more highly sought after. He is a big kid (6’4” and 250 plus pounds), has good speed, aggressive, and plays fast. He is big and fast enough he could move inside to defensive tackle or play on the outside as a defensive end in college. Butler is due to make a decision soon and is yet to take his official visit to Tennessee. Right now, Tennessee is his leader.

TJ Moore, 6’5” 280 lbs. offensive lineman Mallard Creek, North Carolina (Charlotte). This has been one odd recruitment already and we aren’t even through October. Back in the summer, Moore was leaning to Tennessee. He set a decision date in late summer and publicly announced he was committed to South Carolina. The Tennessee camp , feel confident in saying this, believed Moore was going to announce for Tennessee and of course he didn’t. Where this gets odd is between the time Moore committed to South Carolina and last week when he decommitted there had been only minimal discussions between Moore and the South Carolina staff. It will be interesting to see if Moore is still a prospect Tennessee looks to add to the class. He is a dandy of a prospect. Rated a 4 star prospect and the number 6 prospect in the state of North Carolina.

Yusuf Corker . Corker is a rangy athlete /defensive back from Stockbridge , Georgia, who has been on campus multiple times. Corker likely winds up playing for an SEC school. Right now, his top schools seem to be Auburn, Tennessee, and South Carolina.

Jedrick Willis, offensive lineman,6 ‘5” 300 lbs. from Lexington, KY. Willis is the number 1 prospect in the state of Kentucky. Willis has the potential to become an elite offensive lineman. Right now, his top schools are Alabama, Michigan, Notre Dame, and Tennessee. Tennessee has worked very hard to secure an unofficial visit from Willis. Let’s see if Tennessee is able to get him back on campus for an official visit later in the recruiting cycle.

Click to YMCA of East Tennessee!
Labryan Ray and Will Ignont. I mention these two prospects together for a reason. Ray is a strong side defensive end and Ignont is a middle linebacker. Both are highly rated prospects from the state of Alabama. Alabama and Auburn are interested in both kids. Whether the in state schools just out recruit other schools or there is some hanky-panky going on, it is rare that a prospect either of these schools want make it out of the state.

With that said, Tennessee has made an impression on Ray, he has been on campus multiple times and he sees immediate opportunity to play here soon. Same with Ignont. As the season has gone on it is apparent Tennessee lacks SEC quality depth at middle linebacker. Ignont is a highly rated prospect who is a run stuffer first. I don’t hold much hope out either prospect end up at Tennessee though I do find it interesting both appear to have sincere interest in Tennessee

In closing, recruiting never stops and the one constant with recruiting is it changes every day. Expect plenty of changes to the names on the commitment list before the dust settles in February. Expect Tennessee to sign a full class and maybe even a couple beyond that.

Go Vols, Beat Bama

Tony,

The moment of truth has arrived for Tennessee. They have an opportunity for a program changing win tomorrow.

1. The buzz in town this week is as good as it has been anytime since the '90s. It has a true big fight feel to it.

2. Tennessee has to at least get into the 30s to win the game. There are just too many injuries on defense to expect the defensive to hold Alabama in check.

Click to Clancy's Tavern & Whiskey House!
3. I still believe Alabama is a step below what they have been in recent years. They are not as dominant because they are not deep.

4. I say it every year. Enjoy this one because life is short and you only get so many Tennessee v. Alabama Saturdays.

5. My instinct says West Virginia may be in trouble tomorrow. Lubbock is never an easy place to play.

Click to TN Bank!
6. I won't be at all surprised if Indiana gives Nebraska all they want. The Hoosiers are much improved.

7. Miami has a dangerous game coming off the Florida State disappointment. North Carolina is a challenge for any defense.

Click to 21st Mortgage!
8. Wisconsin is certainly capable of picking off Ohio State. Their defense is top flight.

9. Cleveland and Toronto makes for a fascinating ALCS. The Tribe has better starting pitching and the Jays are an offensive juggernaut.

The Vols did what they were expected to do against UConn. There's not really much to say about that game. The game this Saturday in Columbia, Missouri will decide whether or not this season is a failure in my opinion. If they Vols lose, they are staring at 8-4 and probably the Gator Bowl. The Vols are coming back to Neyland Stadium and I am returning after a discretionary bye week. I'll be honest with you. This year it seems like I've been writing the same preview over and over because the formula to win has been the same pretty much every SEC game. I didn't want to sound like a broken record so I needed a bit of a break from that.

I'll start with some general observations..... [more]
