It would be nice if Shaquilla can play like Shaq. I wouldn't count on it though. Link

Tee Mail Wednesday:

Tee Mail
'Hi Tony,

I'm a big fan of the show and blog. I write to you from time to time and don't say too much because I'm nowhere close to being as witty and intelligent as you and the crew. However, thanks for always taking the common fan seriously.

I'm writing today because I wanted to see what made you so passionate about the Vols and what you do (radio/tv/blog)? I know you've been touching on regrets, but I wondered what singular moment (if there is one) made you jump in and connect with the orange blood in the first place. Future topic maybe? I know you've probably already had it at some point.

On a more personal note how do you balance your passion with your family, work, and spiritual life? I'm about to become a first time father next October, so this is a topic I'm thinking about daily. Each day after my morning devotional with my wife I always sit down with coffee and read your blog. I notice some late/early post times and wondered how you make it all work? I'm assuming you have another gig besides radio. I also know how much you care for your family as you talk about them often.

I know this is long and you may not have time to answer, but any advice for a first time dad would be much appreciated.

VFL 04,
Joseph'

Joseph. Lots here. Where to start? How about great hearing from you and thanks for being there. The moment when it all hooked me surrounds the first time I walked into Neyland Stadium. It was a beautiful sunny day on September 26, 1987. I didn't know what to expect. Where I hailed from college football was Penn State and Penn State was college football. Needless to say college football in the south is a different animal and Tennessee football is another story all together. I just didn't know what to expect when I walked into Neyland Stadium that first time, but I'll never forget the sensory overload I experienced that day.

I wasn't on campus for but 7 days when I went as we had just arrived for the beginning of fall quarter. School didn't start until the second week of September. Remember those days? True story. I was a long way away from home, knew of the Vols, but really had no idea what to expect. I guess you could say it was love at first bite because there was something about being in that stadium that spoke to me that day. I knew this was a special place. Now, did I expect to still be kicking around here all these years later? No way. But I was changed for the better in my first exposure on that beautiful fall day.

As far as balance. I'm probably not the best person to ask as I've been prone to literally work myself into the ground in the past. I have learned in recent years (the hard way) that the most important gift we have in this life is time. Money comes and goes but time is the great equalizer. I'm going to share with you and all new parents what my mentors shared with me. Kids aren't interested in how much money you have or how big your house is. Kids care about time. Enjoy your children while they are young because it doesn't last long. My kids are already 16 and we've become sort of uncool, but it's OK because it's all a part of the natural progression of things. Take time to make time would be my advice.

In terms of why I do what I do...It's hard to describe. All I know is that I'm doing what I feel like God has for me. Some days I do really well at it and others I fail miserably, yet I get up and keep trying. With God's blessing I'll get many more bites at the apple.

Tony,

The NBA and NHL playoffs roll on and Major League Baseball is starting to heat up. Spring always brings plenty of things to talk about in the world of sports.

1. Fran Fraschilla seems to be certain Omer Yurtseven will not play college basketball. That seems to indicate that a senior transfer is the only solution for Tennessee's frontcourt issues.

2. Leicester City is one of the great stories in sports history. It is hard to find an equivalent of a 5,000-1 shot winning a title.

3. The officiating at the end of Game 2 of the Oklahoma City - San Antonio was farcical. That should be the end of the postseason for those three officials.

4. Atlanta missed a real chance to put pressure on Cleveland. Losing Game 1 at home would have created some panic for the Cavaliers.

5. There are several players who did not get invites to the NBA Draft combine that are now really stuck. The ones who signed with agents and aren't invited have a tough road ahead.

6. Atletico Madrid gutted out an epic Champions League win over Bayern Munich. They get another swing at the big title.

7. It doesn't appear Tennessee's Title IX problem is going away anytime soon. At some point, you have to quit taking black eyes.

8. Miami and Toronto sure look like teams that will go the full 7. There just isn't much differentiation in those two.

9. There is a lot of really bad baseball being played in the National League. Multiple teams will bump up against 100 losses.

'Tony:

I'm tired of all the talk. I'm tired of the trite and tiring news articles. ...always "getting better" blah blah blah.

Commentary for years has been about looking for better things to come. I'm tired of talking about how things are going to get better. Aren't you? How about now. I want to experience winning now. I want a winning attitude and mindset now. No more later. Now!
That's my new slogan idea:

NOW

One word in big bold letters on T shirts.

NOW

It's go time!

Final thought: Now that Ted Cruz is out, Glenn Beck gets to eat again. I wonder what he's craving today?

RJ in Vegas reminded us last night on Twitter that Trump was a 100/1 shot at the outset of the primary process to lock down the nomination. The year of the underdog is underway around the world. Tennessee might actually get a 5 star basketball player yet under Rick Barnes. Tennessee might just beat Florida yet in 2016. Beleeeeeeeee.

Final Four

Friday night’s Iowa-UConn Final Four game had 14.2 million viewers. That’s more than any women’s college basketball game, ever. More than every 2023 NBA Finals game and more than every 2023 World Series game. ESPN has had the rights to NBA games since 2002. But the Final Four game between Iowa and UConn was the networks most-watched basketball game, men’s or women’s, pro or collegiate EVER.... [more]

Missouri Game Preview

The Vols did what they were expected to do against UConn. There's not really much to say about that game. The game this Saturday in Columbia, Missouri will decide whether or not this season is a failure in my opinion. If they Vols lose, they are staring at 8-4 and probably the Gator Bowl. Maybe Reliaquest..... [more]

The Vols are coming back to Neyland Stadium and I am returning after a discretionary bye week. I'll be honest with you. This year it seems like I've been writing the same preview over and over because the formula to win has been the same pretty much every SEC game. I didn't want to sound like a broken record so I needed a bit of a break from that.

I'll start with some general observations..... [more]
