It was GREAT being at Calhoun's yesterday for Veterans Day! Many thanks to Jayson Swain for sitting in with me during my first hour as well. What a special day I had. Wonderful seeing all the Veterans proudly displaying their service. So many folks were there that I had no idea served our country. Wouldn't this be a better land if at least 2 years of some kind of service to something was required of all of us before entering the 'real world'? Just a thought.

Jon Reed surprised me yesterday on the air when he encouraged me to pump the brakes on the Joshua Dobbs canonization. Reed believes Dobbs could be an answer at QB but we really don't know what we have just yet. While this is a good point, I believe that the comeback over SC proves that Dobbs is capable of doing this kind of thing. Many times at that position, real leaders win games their teams have zero business winning.

In my mind, when I see a QB do it once on that stage, they get through a ceiling. I believe that Jayson Swain was right on the money when he shared that Dobbs has all the intangibles to be a terrific leader to pin the hopes of the near future on. To the doubters, I ask what if Dobbs is the man. Won't this be amazing here the next couple of years? If Dobbs is for real, Tennessee nation can start thinking about getting to Atlanta in 2015. Can you imagine that?

Kahlil McKenzie will surely have a lot to say about what happens here in the near future. He's set his official visit date. This kid seems like a real character. Link

It's easy to dismiss the weekly Tuesday reveal as the usual ESPN self serving pablum that they've become a caricature of themselves in recent years in presenting. Then again, the closer we get to it really mattering (3 weeks), this is getting semi interesting. Obviously too much has to happen between now and then but it looks like half the field it set. Surely, FSU and Oregon are going to get in. Neither team has terribly much left. FSU's schedule is embarrassing. TCU appears to be in good shape as well when you look at what they have left as well. About TCU. How are they ahead of a Baylor team that beat them a few weeks ago? Does that make any sense? Link

That SEC spot is going to be true dogfight. While I dismiss the ESPN hype machine in this first year of the playoff, I can't help but wonder what it must be like in those markets that are on the cut line today or even last night. That will be Tennessee fans in the not too distant future watching that program to see where Vols stand. Put in this context, this could be compelling indeed. Just a thought.

Imagine if we were in Starkville today preparing for that all or nothing battle in at Bama? Makes some people there want to parody a goofy pop song. Link

Lady Vols aren't happy about losing 'Lady Vols' in rebranding at UT. Do they have a point? Link

While you may have caught a glimpse of the WSOP finals last night, I've been reading a great book about the origins of the tourney and competitive poker called 'Blood Aces, The Wild Ride of Benny Binion' by Doug Swanson. In fact, I will be interviewing Mr. Swanson tomorrow afternoon live on the app. I will post the interview sometime over the weekend in our book corner section. The book is really great. Binion was a really gifted, troubled, complicated visionary criminal. Lots of great stories and true crime between the pages of this one.

The 30 for 30 on Randy Moss was outstanding last night. I love that guy. The footage of him as a breakout athlete in hoops, football, basketball and track was amazing. The stuff about his community was troubling and thought provoking. Moss has always been a guilty pleasure of mine. Do yourself a favor and check that out if you get the chance. Link

It's getting uglier at North Carolina. Great article from an Antioch Tennessee player done wrong by the system at UNC.Link

Final Four

Friday night’s Iowa-UConn Final Four game had 14.2 million viewers. That’s more than any women’s college basketball game, ever. More than every 2023 NBA Finals game and more than every 2023 World Series game. ESPN has had the rights to NBA games since 2002. But the Final Four game between Iowa and UConn was the networks most-watched basketball game, men’s or women’s, pro or collegiate EVER.... [more]

Missouri Game Preview

The Vols did what they were expected to do against UConn. There's not really much to say about that game. The game this Saturday in Columbia, Missouri will decide whether or not this season is a failure in my opinion. If they Vols lose, they are staring at 8-4 and probably the Gator Bowl. Maybe Reliaquest..... [more]

The Vols are coming back to Neyland Stadium and I am returning after a discretionary bye week. I'll be honest with you. This year it seems like I've been writing the same preview over and over because the formula to win has been the same pretty much every SEC game. I didn't want to sound like a broken record so I needed a bit of a break from that.

I'll start with some general observations..... [more]
