Orange Throat
'T Club Team:

Random musings as the Fighting Voltellos travel to Lexington to take on the SEC-leading Kentucky Wildcats, and we break down the latest on transfer comings and goings:

BIG TEST FOR THE VOLTELLOS ... As they go up against a very balanced Kentucky team that is at the top of the league in hitting and pitching. Wildcat skipper Nick Mingione has three very good starters, a good bullpen and a lineup that leads conference play with a .319 average. Cincinnati transfer Ryan Nicholson has brought added pop to UK's lineup. He trails only our Dylan Dreiling in RBI with 23 and he is tied with Christian Moore for third in homers with nine.

THE SATURDAY SHOWDOWN ... Between Kentucky lefty Dominic Niman and Tennessee's Drew Beam shapes up as a real good one. Both Niman (a transfer from Central Conn. State) and Sunday starter Mason Moore have four league wins each for the Cats.

BLAKE BURKE STILL LEADS ... The SEC with a blistering .444 batting average, 30 points ahead of Georgia's Charlie Condon. Tony Vols' squad has the edge in power but the Kentucky Proud Park typically isn't as home run friendly as The Lindsey.

Click to YMCA of East Tennessee!
WILL DARLINSTONE BE A DARLING ... For the 2024-25 Basketball Vols, especially on offense and rebounding? Tennessee's first free agent pickup is interesting, for sure. The Hofstra transfer is allegedly two inches shorter than his published height of 6-8. I think he plays a very good role next season.

RICK BARNES MET WITH THE MEDIA YESTERDAY ... And my takeaway is he is still fully committed to being at Tennessee and he is adapting to the new world order and isn't going to be chased off from the transfer situation. I love Poli Joe but who could he hire to assure us of a better program? I'm sticking with Ricky from Hickry.

ELIJAH HERRING'S DEPARTURE ... Only hurts if there is a rash of injuries at the linebacker position next fall. So far, it looks like younger brother Caleb Herring is going to stick. He's a better prospect as an edge guy and there's still a possibility that Elijah stays.

SINCO BROUGHT IT ON WEDNESDAY ... With authority on all fronts but I will differ on Dylan Sampson. Don't think he's as good a pure runner as Jaylen Wright but he's way more versatile and should have had more touches that Jabari Small got last season. Pass protection is certainly an issue and Sampson needs to step up there but Nico will be more elusive than Joe Milton. Sinc raises a legitimate question on depth at that position, with Cam Seldon's status being very iffy in the fall.

TWO TOP TEN SOFTBALL TEAMS ... Meet this weekend at The Sherri as 7th-ranked LSU comes to town to play the 4th-ranked Lady Vols. Tennessee leads the league with a 1.80 staff ERA and Payton Gottshall paces the league with a 1.37 ERA and Karlyn Pickens is third at 1.84. LSU will counter with Sydney Berzon's 1.76 ERA. Tennessee has the power advantage with 24 homers in 15 SEC games to LSU's nine in 18 games.

From One T Club Dot Team Legend To Another ...

'X' Recruiting Report ... Tennessee Adds A DB
'X' Says
'Tennessee picked up its 8th commitment of the 2025 recruiting cycle. On Thursday afternoon, Sidney Walton, a defensive back from Moody, Alabama, by way of Detroit, Michigan, announced that he was committed to play football at Tennessee. Walton, who holds 20 scholarship offers, chose Tennessee over Georgia Tech, Missouri, Kentucky and Ole Miss.

Physically, Walton stands 6’2” and weighs between 185 to 190 lbs. He has the build of a basketball player right now not a football player. In fact, Walton is a member of the Moody basketball team. The football coaches at Moody saw his athleticism and talked him into trying out for football. He has played football for two years but not really two years because of basketball. Last season playing as a press corner, he was credited with 40 tackles and multiple pass breakups.

Click to Advent Electric!
Tennessee defensive analyst Levorn Harbin had spotted him while recruiting another Moody player. Tennessee offered Walton last September. Since receiving the offer, Walton has been a regular visitor to Tennessee.

The best way to characterize his play is competitive, physical, and disruptive. From what limited game video is the consistent theme was wide receivers had a difficult time getting separation from him off the line of scrimmage. You have to give the Moody coaches a thumbs up because they put him at cornerback, and that is the position that immediately maximized his athleticism.

Walton joins Georgia defensive backs Tyler Redmond (Alpharetta) and Dylan Lewis (Milton) as defensive backs committed to Tennessee for 2025. Tennessee loves all three of their defensive back commitments. Even so, Tennessee will continue to aggressively recruit defensive backs as they will every position. With the transfer portal you just don’t know how many you need to sign from year to year.

There is a good news bad news situation with the Walton commitments. The good news is Tennessee identified Walton early and got him to campus before word of his athleticism and physical skills made the rounds. The bad news is his commitment to Tennessee is now public. Schools that may have passed over him will now circle back around to revisit his game video. As with most every prospect Tennessee recruits from Alabama, Tennessee will need to withstand the full court press if Auburn or Alabama decide to offer.

Click to Collins Insurance Agency
The Big Picture: You have to like the way this recruiting class is shaping up for Tennessee. At every position Tennessee’s recruiting board is deep. A lesson was apparently learned last fall when a number of prospects that were expected to commit to Tennessee decided to go elsewhere. Tennessee concentrated on a few high-profile prospects when those prospects chose elsewhere their recruiting boards presented limited options. That isn’t going to happen this cycle. Check back here in a couple of weeks as we’ll do a deeper dive position by position on what the recruiting board reveals.

Lastly ... A Word On Some Secret Sauce: It is crystal clear that one of Tennessee’s most valuable recruiting assets is not a position coach but rather a defensive analyst. Coach Levorn Harbin who helps Rodney Garner with defensive line duties may be the best recruiter on staff. Harbin has been instrumental if not absolutely the key to Tennessee landing multiple high – profile recruiting targets.

Yesterday's Tough Question By The #'s We asked you yesterday what would happen soonest: Tennessee Football Wins Playoff Game Tennessee Men's Basketball Final Four Berth Tennessee Women's Basketball Final Four Berth Tennessee Baseball College World Series Championship

If you're looking for what Vegas has to say about this in the immediate future, here's how it breaks down.

Vols to make the college football playoff +180. Which means to win a playoff game this year is between 3/1 and 4/1

Vols to win college World Series this year is 8/1 right now

Vols to make final four next year is 4/1

Lady Vols to make final four next year is 20/1

Tennessee Basketball Report: Rick Barnes met with the media yesterday and was in a talking mood on last weeks portal leakage in his program. Here's some of the latest that we're hearing ...

As The World Turns With Tobe Awaka: It sounds like Awaka is now trending more towards leaving and staying in the portal. What's interesting is that this isn't NIL related or a money issue. Tobe's concern is more of an old school transfer where he wants guaranteed playing time. Estrella's projected development plus Tennessee wanting to add more in the post has him concerned that he's going to get squeezed. Big time roller coaster with the in again, out again in again out again NYCNY forward.

Rick Barnes On The Awaka Situation: 'We respected Tobe a lot and we still do. But oftentimes we've had guys that tell us that after (they jump into the portal) they tell us they made a mistake. And sometimes in a rush in the moment people can listen to people and realize that maybe they maybe should've waited and thought it all out a little bit more,' Barnes said.

Barnes Said Tennessee Won't Wait Around For Awaka To Decide If He's Returning: 'Obviously we all respect him and love him for what he did for us. But if he feels he's got to go through the process, then he needs to do it. With that said, we're not waiting. Because we we're going to move forward and build this roster as quickly as we can,' Barnes said.

The Latest On Aidoo: Rick Barnes was asked if Aidoo entering the portal was a surprise: "Yeah. He had told everybody he was fine." Very short answer for a Barnes presser. Generally Barnes holds court and elaborates for the press. He was in very little mood to get into that Aidoo mess.

After a Zoom visit with UNC, Aidoo is visiting Baylor this weekend. Tennessee/Baylor/St John’s all in the same 4 team tournament in the Bahamas in November. We hear his visit with UNC on zoom did not go well this week.

Mashack Not Mincing Words: The top defender in college basketball isn't defending teammates that enter the transfer portal.

"I don't want to bring anyone along who doesn't want to be a part of Tennessee basketball," Mashack said.

'Tennessee travels to Kentucky Pride Skatepark this weekend for a 3-game series vs Kentucky.

Both teams are ranked in the top five nationally and the Wildcats are 14-1 in SEC play.

It’s a matchup that features the two best offensive teams in the SEC.

The Volunteers are 2nd nationally in runs per game and lead the country in both home runs (101) and doubles (100). The Vols’s team OPS of 1.107 is just insane!

The Wildcats do a little bit of everything. They’ll steal bases, sac bunt, hit-and-run and this year have added home runs to their offense.

It’s very much a pitcher-friendly park and with weather not expected to be great, don’t be surprised if we see one or two low-scoring games.

Here’s a few more notes for the weekend:

— Kentucky has 79 stolen bases on the season. No other SEC team has even attempted to swipe more than 77 bags. Tennessee has had trouble holding base runners in previous years but have only allowed 20 stolen bases this season in 28 attempts. Expect Kentucky to challenge Tennessee pitchers and catchers this weekend.

— Kentucky batters have the 2nd fewest strikeouts in the SEC, while Wildcats pitchers have the fewest strikeouts of any SEC staff. So expect a lot of balls in play, which will make defense have a bigger impact on games. Tennessee induces more groundouts than any other SEC pitching staff. Kentucky’s infield defense is better than Tennessee’s.

— Tennessee started Chris Stamos on Friday night vs LSU because the Tigers were the SEC’s worst hitting team vs lefties. Both Tennessee and Kentucky hit .334 vs left-handed pitching, by far the best in the SEC. Will the Vols use the Cal transfer as a starter once again or will they go back to AJ Causey?

— Tennessee is also hitting .334 vs right-handed pitching this year, while the Cats are hitting just .274. One Vols pitcher who could see his first SEC action of the year is Marcus Phillips, who threw two perfect innings in his first career start on Tuesday vs Bellarmine. Phillips's dad played football at Kentucky.

— Tennessee and Kentucky are the two best SEC teams hitting with runners on base and with two outs. On the season, Tennessee has 150 2-out RBIs while Kentucky has 123. Only one other SEC team has 100 (Texas A&M, 103).

— Kentucky has the 2nd best team ERA in SEC play, behind only Arkansas. UK starters have thrown the most innings of any SEC team’s, while the Cats bullpen has just a 2.15 ERA in league-play, more than a run better than the next best bullpen.

— Blake Burke leads the SEC by 30 points in batting average in SEC play, hitting .444. Kentucky has four batters who rank in the top 10 in BA in league play.

ICYMI from Monday: 'X' Marks The Spot!!!! 'X' Returns With A Spring Football Breakdown
'X' Says

@TonyBasilio
'X' Orange & White Game Report ...

It certainly was a beautiful spring Saturday in Knoxville. What a setting to celebrate the completion of another spring of practice football for the Tennessee Volunteers. The Orange & White game, fully scripted so as not to divulge any state secrets to the 12 opponents on the 2024 schedule, was largely as anticipated ….. uneventful. The best news is there were no major injuries on Saturday. Most of the players who had been nursing an injury didn’t even dress for the game.

Tennessee showed just enough of Nico on Saturday to sustain fan excitement until the end of July. The head coach sure has more courage than I do. After Nico’s first pass play where the offensive line and DeSean Bishop decided not to block anyone, Nico would have spent the rest of the afternoon standing beside me if that was my dime and dance floor.

Takeaways from Saturday and Spring Practice Generally Nico still has plenty to improve upon. Sure, it’s a spring game I get it… Gaston Moore though looked more comfortable in getting the offense from one play to the next play compared to Nico. I expect him to be better at this in the fall.

The roster is better. The secondary is more athletic, the bodies are bigger and more athletic on both lines of scrimmage, and the wide receiver group, minus Squirrel White and Bru McCoy who both return for fall practice, looked bigger and more explosive.

A couple of non-descript things stood out to me in a spring game. Senior Omari Thomas, by all accounts Tennessee's best interior defensive lineman, chased down a running back 20 yards beyond the line of scrimmage.

Back up offensive lineman Ayden Bussell left the game with a shoulder injury. An injury in a spring game usually signals the end of the afternoon for most players. Bussell returned to action a few plays later. I bet you that caught the attention of both the offensive line coach and the head coach.

Tennessee offensive specialists handled the ball without turning it over. With all the changing personnel parts of a spring game and the quarterbacks didn’t botch a handoff or throw an interception. The running backs and wide receivers secured the ball. Game execution was spot on.

I do not know what to make of the back-up running back situation. Coaches have been singing the praises of both backups all spring. I saw nothing from either Saturday that made me comfortable. What I did see were missed blocking assignments, tentative running, and lack of explosive plays. One of the storylines for the next few weeks is whether Tennessee pursues a running back in the portal.

Josh Heupel is quietly telling his media that Seldon is out until early September. My advice is to add a month to what he is saying publicly and that is when you can reasonably expect Cam Seldon to be healthy enough to return. We know from watching Jabari Small suffer through a lingering shoulder issue that you have to be careful with that injury literally from series to series.

Tennessee has an abundance of riches on the defensive line. You just have the feeling Tennessee might try and redshirt a couple of those interior players when more playing time is available in 2025.

The secondary is an unknown. The “group” is more athletic, but will the defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach allow the players to play through some inevitable mistakes or will they play it safe.

If Keenan Pili is healthy, the defense will be plenty good enough. When healthy he is one of Tennessee's best defenders and one of the best linebackers in the conference. He also brings a calming influence on the younger linebackers. Sophomore linebacker Jeremiah Telander is one of Tennessee’s most improved players this spring He took full advantage of being healthy and hitting it off with the new position coach. He made a strong case for starting beside Pili this fall.

Others Who Stood Out

Gaston Moore looks like a capable backup quarterback. I want Nico to make it through the season healthy. If he happened to miss a series or two, Gaston is capable of running the offense.

Mike Matthews doesn’t look like a freshman wide receiver. The long touchdown catch was nice, but I noticed his blocking on Saturday. He was a willing blocker and didn’t shy away from contact at all. The fact that he is a willing blocker and is explosive to boot almost guarantees him playing time next season.

Sham Umarov. Umarov looks like he is furthest along in terms of development of any of the other young offensive linemen. So much so that Umarov has jumped into the competition for the starting left guard position this fall.

Edwin Spillman and Boo Carter. Both true freshmen with a lot to learn. Both flashed here and there Saturday. Those plays should excite fans for their respective futures at Tennessee.

Portal Transfer Jakobe Thomas. His athleticism is something the secondary has been missing. He showed up a lot Saturday.

Redshirt freshman defensive lineman Nathan Robinson. He has put in work in the offseason program. He looks like a completely different player physically than a year ago. Coach Garner will find a way to get Robinson into the rotation this fall.

Lingering Injury Questions You don’t take a chance with any injured player being counted on in the fall. The following injuries though seem problematic.

Tight end Ethan Davis. Davis is as talented a tight end prospect that has played at Tennessee in recent time. He can’t stay healthy. He was held out of the spring game as a precaution. He was injured in the spring game last year and he missed his first season at Tennessee recovering from shoulder surgery. Davis has missed more time with injury than he has practicing. I really want to see him healthy because he can be a difference maker. The tight end position is so important a position to the offense that keeping Davis healthy is a huge concern.

Right tackle John Campbell. Campbell is a key member of the offensive line. Him being healthy and available is important to the offensive. He hasn’t been healthy frankly since mid-season last season. He missed time leading up to the spring game with injury and he reinjured himself in warmups Saturday and was held out as a precaution.

Cam Seldon. His injury is the worst news of the spring. He is such a key piece to the offense. Josh Heupel is telling his media confidantes that Seldon is out until early September. My advice. Add a month. Therefore, you can reasonably expect Cam Seldon to be healthy enough to return in late September or early October. After watching Jabari Small suffer through a lingering shoulder issue for 3 seasons you hold your breath every time the kid takes contact.

Wrapping Things Up ... It's Portal Time In Tennessee:

The transfer portal opens Monday and I’m holding my breath. I do expect Tennessee players to enter the portal. With the money flying around in the NIL market, Tennessee needs to continue to manage its current roster.

I’m watching the defensive line including the pass rushers. Likely the deepest and best in the SEC. You can’t discount other programs who have depth issues at those positions coming after one or more of the experienced linemen with offers that would be hard to turn down.

And how active will Tennessee be when the portal opens? A running back or depth at linebacker isn’t out of the question. And ... how do they feel about Ethan Davis’s recent spate of injuries? Can you find an experienced tight end who can pick up the pace of this offense in a few months?

Tennessee didn’t solve its left guard position this spring. Sham Umarov had a good enough spring to surpass a couple of guys in the competition who were limited because of injury. Also returning offensive linemen Jackson Lampley, Cooper Mays, Andrej Karic, Larry Johnson, Javontez Spraggins, Masai Reddick, and John Campbell all missed some or all of spring practice. The coaches don’t seem to be worried. I should note though at least half of that group have been nursing one injury or another since coming to campus.

The Vols did what they were expected to do against UConn. There's not really much to say about that game. The game this Saturday in Columbia, Missouri will decide whether or not this season is a failure in my opinion. If they Vols lose, they are staring at 8-4 and probably the Gator Bowl. The Vols are coming back to Neyland Stadium and I am returning after a discretionary bye week. I'll be honest with you. This year it seems like I've been writing the same preview over and over because the formula to win has been the same pretty much every SEC game. I didn't want to sound like a broken record so I needed a bit of a break from that.

I'll start with some general observations..... [more]
