Orange Throat leads off today ...
Orange Throat
'T Club Team:

Random musings as the Basketball Vols play a mega-huge game in Detroit:

VOLS ARE FAVORED ... To make the second Elite Eight in school history. Tennessee opened as a 1.5-point fav and it has been bet up to -3 on some books. The ticket market has settled around $175 for upper level seats. It is only about a 4.5-hour drive from Purdue's campus. If Tennessee and the Boilermakers meet on Sunday afternoon with the Final Four on the line, expect a good contingent from Vol Nation to decide to make the trek north to represent.

DO YOU BELEE? I do in this team, at least to get past Creighton. Mighty mite Zakai Zeigler will be a huge factor at both ends and Dalton Knecht will score like the consensus All-American he's been all year. Looking for something like Large Orange 81, Blue Jays 75.

THE FORECAST LOOKS GREAT ... For the Tennessee-Georgia baseball series this weekend for weather and home runs. The Fighting Voltellos come in as league leaders with 16 homers in six SEC games. The Bulldogs have hit five. Georgia outfielder Charlie Condon has 14 homers in non-league games and three in conference play. His teammate, first baseman Corey Collins leads the league with a .500 BA and five home runs.

THE VOLS SHOULD HAVE AN EDGE IN PITCHING ... Though Frank Anderson's staff is only in the middle of the pack right now with a 5.25 ERA. Georgia is dead last in the SEC with a 9.18 ERA. Anderson, who needs to stop getting thrown out of games, won't have A.J. Russell for a while. Some arms in the bullpen need to start showing up. Tony Vols will be without Billy Amick this weekend, which moves Dean Curley to third and inserts freshman Ariel Antigua at shortstop. Antigua flashed some promising defensive skills in the win over Tennessee Tech.

BOO IS BOOSTING THE BACK END ... True freshman Boo Carter is demonstrating why secondary guru Nick Saban coveted his services in Tennessee's spring practice. Josh Heupel praised the Chattanoogan after Wednesday's scrimmage. It is tempting to scoff that Tim Banks and Willie Martinez are going to start a freshman in the fall, but insiders think it will be difficult for them to keep Carter off the field. Heupel also mentioned Carter's classmate Edrees Farooq for his play at safety. Another classmate, WR Mike Matthews, showed up and showed out in the scrimmage as well.

OH HOW THE HOUSE THAT PAT BUILT HAS FALLEN ... You have to feel for Kellie Harper. She loves her state, her school and her program but like Holly Warlick, she just can't do it. This doesn't mean Danny White is ready to move and pay Harper off and have the expense of hiring a better coach who can chase LSU and South Carolina in the sport. Louisiana State pays Kim Mulkey $3.2 million and lost more than $7 million en route to winning a natty in '23. South Carolina pays Dawn Staley $3.1 million. Harper has been given two raises by Doctor Danny and now hauls in $1.1 million. Her assistant coaching hubby makes another $178,000.

IT HAS BEEN A LONG TIME ... Since Pat Summitt won eight NCAA natties and she and her teams visited the White House under Presidents Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Clinton and George W. The last one was 2008 and the program now is lucky to make the Sweet 16. Younger members of Vol Nation may not know that the UT women's athletics department was separate from the men's until 2011, when Dave "The Hitman" Hart was hired to replace Mike Hamilton and merge the two departments. In the midst of the college sports revolution, there seems little appetite inside the UT administration to pony up millions more to maybe win a few more women's hoops games and rightfully so. A shutdown corner or a Jalin Hyatt clone at receiver costs less and gives way more value.

THE PICTURE IS BRIGHTER ... With Lady Vol softball. Much brighter. The fourth-ranked softballers are 6-0 in the SEC and travel to 2-7 Auburn this weekend.

Throatagie ... There's a lot in your report here but my question for you today is pretty simple ... Are you ready to go where no Tennessee Basketball fan has ever been? We've got a legitimate chance to get to the Final Four. Then again every time I get over my skis I'm over my skis. LFG Vols ...

TGMD Is Breaking Tennessee Creighton Down Scientifically: Here's Matt now breaking it down ...

'Tennessee has the opportunity to match its best NCAA Tournament run tonight vs Creighton.

Much like the 2019 Sweet 16 game vs Purdue, this 2 vs 3 matchup feels like a true toss up.

Tennessee is the more athletic and deeper team but the Bluejays are well-coached and shoot much better than the Vols.

Kim English and Providence beat Creighton twice this season, including in the Big East Tournament, so that should give Tennessee a great scout.

Luckily, it’ll be nearly impossible for the Vols to shoot as poorly as they did vs Texas.

But they must shoot A LOT better to out-score the Bluejays.

75 points should be enough to win the game.

So how do the Vols get there?

30 from Dalton Knecht, 15 from Zakai Zeigler and 10 from Jonas Aidoo gets Tennessee to 55 points.

Can the role players — Santiago Vescovi, Josiah-Jordan James, Jahmai Mashack, Jordan Gainey and Tobe Awaka — find a way to score 20 points between them?

If so, Tennessee makes the Elite 8.

Click to The Garza Law Firm
Creighton has arguably the top rim protector in college hoops in 7-foot-1 Ryan Kalkbrenner. Because of this, the Bluejays funnel opponents inside the 3-point line. Their drop coverage in ball screen defense gives opponents open mid-range shots. Triple J’s FT line pull-up jumper, Aidoo’s catch-and-shoot jumper and Zeigler’s running floater are shots the Vols must knock down.

Creighton won’t force many turnovers and will let the Vols run their motion offense. Tennessee won’t grab many offensive boards or get to the free throw line so making their open shots sounds like an obvious statement but it really is the deciding factor in the game.

Defensively, it will be interesting to see if the Vols’ physicality can disrupt Creighton’s offensive sets, which really spread the floor as all five starters can make 3s. Because of this, I don’t think this is a game that Gainey or Awaka can play well in for long stretches. Teams have constantly picked on those two (as well as Knecht at times) in half-court sets and as they both are often late with rotations and closeouts. A team like Creighton can exploit this with their ball movement and spacing. Mashack has excelled the past two seasons vs Alabama and Creighton’s offense is similar in terms of spacing so I’d love to see #15 play at least 20 minutes.

Tennessee’s defensive ball pressure is something the Bluejays have rarely seen and it has given them problems this season, ie vs Providence. Zeigler’s constant guarding could cause all sorts of issues for Creighton PG Steven Ashworth.

If the Vols can force enough turnovers and convert them into at least 12 points, it could be the difference in the game.

Creighton doesn’t attack the offensive glass nor do they get to the free throw line. They’ll shoot a bunch of three's.

Lefty Bailey Scheierman has the green light from everywhere.

Trey Alexander is a three-level scorer and it felt like in the games I watched they ran their offense through him when they needed a bucket.

Mason Miller is a 6-foot-9 stretch 4 but he’s limited to being a catch-and-shoot player. He’s their best shooter from deep, making 45% on the season.

A note I hope doesn’t factor into the game: at Providence, freshman Jasen Green (#0) came off the bench and battled inside with physicality no other Bluejay player showed. In close tournament games, a 7th or 8th man off the bench providing just a couple of hustle plays often times makes the difference in who advances and who doesn’t.

Finally ...

Donnie Neal Shame On You: The new Superintendent of Wayne County Kentucky school district. Donnie Neal exacted his revenge on VFL Rodney Woods on Wednesday. We're talking about a Hall of Fame coach that just finished his 38th season with a 24-8 record and a district champion. Not a whiff of impropriety around the Cardinals program. Nor has there ever been.

It turns out that Rodney Woods apparently got caught up in a political act of revenge from Neal. Apparently Rodney's wife voted against Neal's bid for the Superintendent's job in Wayne County 10 years back, at which time Neal promised that he would get Rodney if he ever got the opportunity. Well that day came unfortunately. And now a good man is out of a job. And apparently a petty man got his revenge. My question is simple. How can you justify firing a man with a spotless record that's a pillar in the community just like that? No scandal. No nothing. This isn't right. Rodney Woods & family, friends, players and concerned fans I stand with you!!! Donnie Neal ... you need to do the right thing and walk this back. Like now ...

ICYMI from Thursday: Brian Hartman Returns With Some Wonderful Food For Thought On The Sweet 16
Brian Hartman
'Sweet 16 trips since 2006 including 2024: North Carolina 11 Duke 11 Gonzaga 11 Arizona 8 TENNESSEE 7 Purdue 7 Uconn 6 Houston 5 S D St 4 Iowa St 4 Marquette 4 Alabama 3 Creighton 3 NC St 3 Clemson 2 Illinois 1

It's interesting that the Vols have been to the Sweet 16 more times than Uconn during this span. Despite Uconn winning 3 national titles (2011, 2014, 2023).

Illinois is making their first trip to the Sweet 16 since 2005, when they lost to North Carolina in the national championship game. You think of Illinois as more of a basketball school than Tennessee, but not lately according to this.

Every other program but Illinois has been to the Sweet 16 at least 2x, counting this season.

I start in 2006 because that was Bruce Pearl's first season at Tennessee. He started the fire that is still burning today. 18 years later.

Kentucky has been to 8 Sweet 16's since 2006, only 1 more than the Vols. They do have four Final Four's and a national title though.

Florida has been to 7 Sweet 16's since 2006, same number as the Vols. They also have 3 Final Four's with 2 national championships. However, Florida's last Sweet 16 was in 2017.

Here's Matt Dixon breaking it down ...

'Votellos Run Rule Tennessee Tech:

Tennessee snapped a 2-game losing streak to Tennessee Tech with an 11-1 run-rule victory Tuesday night at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.

The Volunteers used a different pitcher in each of the seven innings to hold the Golden Eagles to just three hits.

Tennessee scored 11 runs on 13 hits to improve to 22-4 on the season.

With runners on the corners and no outs in the bottom of the 1st, Christian Moore grounded into a 6-4-3 double play but brought home the runner at 3rd to give the Vols an early 1-0 lead.

Tennessee loaded the bases with only one out in the bottom of the 3rd but a 6-4-3 double play ended the threat.

The Vols loaded the bases with only out again in the 4th inning. This time pushing across two runs. First on a Charlie Taylor fielder’s choice ground ball to shortstop and then on a double steal that saw Reese Chapman’s cross home plate before Taylor was tagged out in a rundown.

Tennessee blew the game open in the 5th inning. A 2-run home run by Blake Burke made it 5-0. It was Burke’s 9th home run of the season and 39th for his UT career, passing Todd Helton. He’s now just one long ball shy of tying the school record for career home runs.

Back-to-back doubles from Kavares Tears and Hunter Ensley plated another run to make it 6-0.

Later in the frame, Reese Chapman crushed a no-doubter to right field for a 3-run home run to extend the lead to 9-0.

A 2-out single by Theo Bryant IV in the top of the 3rd was the Golden Eagles’ only hit until Bryant IV doubled off the top of the wall in right centerfield with one out in the 6th inning.

Bryant IV would eventually come around to score on a muffed catch at 1st base later in the inning to make it 9-1.

After loading the bases with no outs in the bottom of the 7th, Chapman hit a ground-rule double down the right field line that walked off the Golden Eagles 11-1.

Notes: — Billy Amick was out of the lineup for the first time all season vs the Golden Eagles with appendicitis. He’s expected to miss all three games this weekend vs Georgia as well.

— Ariel Antigua earned his first career start at shortstop and made a couple of nice plays in the field. Regular starting shortstop Dean Curley slid over to 3rd base, giving fans a preview of the likely left side of the infield next season.

— Hitting in the leadoff spot for the first time all season, Robin Villeneuve was 3-for-3 and scored twice.

— Reese Chapman made his 8th start of the season and went 4-for-4 with a 3-run home run, double and five RBIs.

— Freshman Dylan Loy made his first career start. He retired the side in order to open the game in his only inning of work.

— Freshman Derek Schaefer earned the win after pitching a three up, three down 2nd inning with two strikeouts.

We can now officially congratulate Caitlin Clark on breaking the record for the most points scored in women’s basketball!

Caitlin Clark is the biggest superstar in college basketball (men’s or women’s). That’s not just me being a fan, Caitlin Clark is HER! Caitlin scored 49 points on February 15th to pass Kelsey Plum’s NCAA record for the most career points in women’s college basketball..... [more]
It's a Love Story

Jared (the redneck from Roanoke, VA) thought the Taylor Swift coverage would end with the Super Bowl, but this love story isn’t going anywhere. In a game that was four hours and 18 minutes (that’s a total of 15,480 seconds). Swift only appeared for around 55 seconds! 55 SECONDS from the moment the game kicked off to the overtime touchdown.

Missouri Game Preview
Posted: Thu, Nov 9th, 12:56 PM
by Josh
The Vols did what they were expected to do against UConn. There's not really much to say about that game. The game this Saturday in Columbia, Missouri will decide whether or not this season is a failure in my opinion. If they Vols lose, they are staring at 8-4 and probably the Gator Bowl. Maybe Reliaquest..... [more]
Connecticut Game Preview

The Vols are coming back to Neyland Stadium and I am returning after a discretionary bye week. I'll be honest with you. This year it seems like I've been writing the same preview over and over because the formula to win has been the same pretty much every SEC game. I didn't want to sound like a broken record so I needed a bit of a break from that.

I'll start with some general observations..... [more]
