Tennessee Basketball... What a wonderful blessing you are to us!! Thank you.... Thank you.... Thank You...

Thank You Vol Fan!!! I had three listener watch parties in a row on back to back to back days and met hundreds of people this weekend. I love each and every one of you. It means the world to me that you would choose to spend your valuable Tennessee time with me....

My favorite hoops season ever.... Because this team is great....Also because you've invigorated me at our listener watch parties.

Let's keep this going!!!! NCAA Tournament Watch Party Tennessee Vs Colgate Friday @ Corner 16 2:45 Start Time We'll be there from 11a on so please come enjoy the day with us!

The Kentucky Game Will Never Be Forgotten: This living fan has NEVER seen anything like that game on Saturday. High level basketball was on display. What an amazing win by our kids. What an incredible scene in Nashville. I was literally levitating at Corner 16. We were in stunned euphoria. Nobody could believe it. Amazing stuff.

Next on the MIC is Orange Throat....

'Basillville:

Random musings and short shots as we reflect on a bittersweet three days in Nashville and look ahead to a trip to Columbus, Ohio:

VOL FANS WENT FROM EUPHORIA to needing their Kevlar cups in less than 24 hours. The Kentucky win was Tennessee’s best SEC Tournament victory against the rival Wildcats since the championship game in 1979. For those of you keeping score at home, that’s 40 years. The third straight loss to Auburn on Sunday was a kick in the crotch, especially given the fact Vol fans took over The Stone and were ready to celebrate a championship. The Vols were brilliant on Saturday and looked worse than Karl Ravech’s hairpiece on Sunday. That’s the cruelty of tournament hoops.

“BIG GAME BRUCE” PEARL’S bench outscored Rick Barnes’ by a 30-10 margin. Barnes is hamstrung by his last two recruiting classes, as his team doesn’t have any young up-and-coming players adding offensive spark late in a season. Yves Pons and Derrick Walker play minor roles from the 2017 class and we were surprised Zach Kent wasn’t directed elsewhere in order to add another guard or big in the 2018 class, which has only D.J. Burns. Burns is red-shirting. To express it in numbers, Tennessee has gotten 102 of 2,781 points scored this season from its last two classes.

TONY HAD A GREAT CALLER on the Garza Basketball OT Show yesterday. How can we call this the best UT basketball team ever when it couldn’t win the SEC or SEC Tourney championship? Mark Griffin’s answer was an easy one. “Get to the Final Four.”

THE ROAD TO MINNEAPOLIS starts with a trip to Columbus, OH for our #2 seed Volunteers. They start with #15 seed Colgate on Friday and then play the winner of Iowa vs. Cincinnati. Playing the UC Bearcats a hundred miles from their campus would seem to be a tough curve for the NCAA Committee to throw the #2 seed but that’s why we keep our cups on. Of course, Jerry Palm doesn’t think the committee ever pays attention to geography or tv matchups.

AMATEURISH PRO DAY at UT last week. No offense to the kids, but longtime UT football observers said it was an embarrassing lack of talent on display for pro scouts, thanks to Butch Jones’ pititful recruiting. Jonathan Kongbo might be a a draft prospect had he not suffered the knee injury last season. Shy Tuttle looked stronger and in better shape but his injury history is tough. Micah Abernathy flashed speed and might inpress as a free agent.

THE BASEBALL VOLS got an SEC reality jolt by getting swept at Auburn this weekend, which makes getting a series win at home with South Carolina next weekend a must. The Lady Vol softball team had a good, not great weekend, beating BYU twice but splitting with Texas.

Throaty... I don't care if we played UC on Xavier's campus.....Tennessee will NEVER have a more favorable draw to advance to the Final Four. That entire south region is navigable. If Tennessee had to face each team in the region, I think they would beat them in a regular season game. The issue is we're in the second season. Refalytics Judd said last night that post-season is a different game and a different season and he's right on the money. I can't wait to see how Tennessee responds to the new season.

I'm going to choose to ignore our Baseball Vols opening weekend and pro day is that Auburn loss yesterday level of depressing.

Did You Know.... Colgate.... UT's Friday Opponent.... Since Feb 1st is the #1 Three point shooting team in the country. We have to watch the ball screens off the shot. They don't create three's like Auburn with the drive and dish game but do it with screens.

'Nicole Auerbach of the Athletic tweeted out the NCAA’s official seed list Sunday night and it ranked Tennessee 5th. More importantly, the Vols were listed at 29-4, which means the selection committee viewed Saturday’s game vs Kentucky as the SEC Tournament Championship.<BR>

I’ll chose to believe that too, which means the Vols enter the Big Dance fresh off the greatest win in Tennessee basketball history. A comeback for the ages to beat the G League Kats in a de facto road game in Nashville.

I’ve never been more proud of the basketvols than I was Saturday afternoon. I had tears of joy seeing Grant Williams, Admiral Schofield and Lamonte Turner being interviewed postgame by Laura Rutledge, who — despite being a Gator — is excellent.

Laura, Sean Farnham, Aaron Torres and Gary Parrish are the four national media members who’ve believed in the Vols all season. I don’t know about you, but those four have always been my go-tos as college hoops insiders. Their faith in Tennessee will be rewarded over the next month because you couldn’t ask for a better draw. We got the draw needed to go all the way.

We all wanted a 1-seed, but Tennessee isn’t regal and it was always going to be an uphill battle. I’m convinced Jay Bilas was ready to call for Florida State to grab the last top-seed had they beat mighty Duke Saturday for the ACC Tournament crown.

The Vols open Friday afternoon at 2:45 pm against Colgate. I’m sure Pat Forde and Dan Wolken had a race to see who could make a dental hygiene joke the quickest in their GroupMe.

The Patriot League champs are 24-10 on the season, and went 13-5 in league play before winning the conference tournament. They lost at Syracuse in November, 77-56, and at Penn State in December, 76-65. They shoot threes really well, ranking 13th nationally at 39.1%, per barttorvik.com.

I’ll admit I knew nothing about Colgate before Sunday. I should devote more time to Matt Langel’s squad, but I’m writing this late Sunday night and if Tennessee is as good as I believe we are, they should handle their business in the first round with relative ease.

Outside of Villanova — who’s no where near as good as their title teams of 2018 and 16 — could a region be filled with more tournament underachievers, especially Tennessee’s half?

Cincinnati and Purdue get bounced a round early every year. To be fair, Purdue has had some bad luck recently. Iowa is the most pedestrian of pedestrian programs in all of college athletics. They have the same 8-4 team in football every year and Fran McCaffery has perfected the 20-win season with first weekend exit over the last 10 years. His vocabulary also rivals Kevin O’Neill’s, which the 6-year-old me could hear back in the day because TBA only had a couple thousand fans at games. (I hope the “Free Isaiah, Dickey must go!” guy is still alive so he can enjoy this tourney run.)

It’s asking a lot for the Vols to go as far as any team in school history, but my expectation is for Tennessee to at least make the Elite 8. This is the third time Rick Barnes is a 2-seed. The two previous times (2006 and 08 at Texas) his team reached the Elite 8. No reason this team shouldn’t. After that, we’ll roll the ball out and see what happens. I’ll take my chances and ride-or-die with Admiral Schofield, Grant Williams, Jordan Bone and the rest of the Vols any day.

Go cut some nets down, Tennessee! It’s about damn time.

Other tourney thoughts — Gonzaga sure didn’t get a favorable draw. The West is probably the toughest region. Michigan is good enough to win it all. Texas Tech is a great “sleeper” pick for the title. Florida State is outstanding, led by VFL and 8th-year senior Phil Cofer. Buffalo and Syracuse are potential second-weekend teams, as well. — Duke should coast to the Sweet 16, but Virginia Tech or Mississippi State won’t be a pushover, nor would Michigan State or possibly LSU. The Blue Devils are the best team in college basketball, but once it gets serious in the second weekend, it’s hard to see them making threes in four straight games. Zion Williamson is good enough to pull a game out when they can’t make anything from outside, but they’ll be tested more than expected.

— As long as Ole Miss doesn’t become a trendy upset pick, they’ll have a shooter’s chance against Virginia. Kermit Davis upset 2-seeded Michigan State while at MTSU, and I won’t be surprised if he does it to Tony Bennett this year. You have to shoot well from outside to beat Virginia and that’s what Ole Miss does. If the Rebel Black Bear Landsharks can make shots like they did against Tennessee, they’ll have a chance.

— North Carolina, Auburn and Kansas in the top-half of the Midwest region? I’ll have to take a shower after watching those teams play. If someone in attendance isn’t dressed as Burt Macklin from the FBI, I’ll be very disappointed. It’s never good to trust teams that rely on threes in the tourney, but if Auburn survives the first weekend, they can beat the Tar Heels, who struggle to defend the 3-point line.

— I’ll be big fan of Alilene Christian, Wofford, Seton Hall, Houston, Iowa State and whoever comes out of the FBI quad, probably UNC. The day Kentucky gets sent home is a national holiday in my world. Players like Christian Laettner and teams like the 2015 Wisconsin Badgers will always have a special place in my sports’ heart.

It’s finally March! Let’s enjoy it and maybe have fun winning championships together.

@MattDixon3'

Watch!!! Kermit Davis and Ole Miss in the second round versus #1 seeded Virginia.....It could happen. Ole Miss is just unorthodox enough and scores enough in bunches to pull the upset...Don't sleep on Ole Miss. Davis already has a win over a #1 seed. He ain't sceeered.

A Quick Update On Us Here: If you're an Android user and upgrade to a new phone or you're just hunting the Tony Basilio Show app and can't find it in the the Google Play Store, you're not imagining things if you can't find it. That's because our App provider has told us that they're getting out of the App business. Therefore we're in the process of getting something else built. It's going to happen after hoops season for sure so in the meantime, please use TuneIn Radio for our stream if you don't have The Tony Basilio Show app already downloaded. If you already have the App downloaded, you can continue using it.

This unexpected curve ball with the need for a new app led me to bring up yesterday our need here at The Tony Basilio Show for those that consume this web site and the show to please consider joining our fight by joining the T Club. In the past couple of years our expenses to do this have skyrocketed. Not to mention the fact that we're absolutely busting it for you with all of our post-game offerings plus all the add ons like 'X' and our other contributors. Here's the bottom line...

I don't want another word to be said here before I say thank you for everybody that has been carrying the T Club concept up to this point. I'm blessed to have people that value what we do. YOU ARE APPRECIATED!

I don't want to put this blog behind a paywall but may have to at some point. I was told by 3 industry insiders that I'm absolutely being idealistic and naive in not putting this content behind some kind of paywall. I want all this content to be available to everybody.

The way I see this I could do four things at this point.

1. Quit and move to a larger market. I could pretty much do this tomorrow no sweat with what I've accomplished here. Imagine your Tennessee experience without the madness we've created here. It could happen if you don't get involved. Not getting dramatic here but this is on the table especially with my kids out of the house.

2. Put this stuff behind a paywall and become something that I never set out to be. This would no doubt work to help us defray our escalating fixed costs we have per year. Since starting 14 years ago on our own, our fixed costs have more than doubled. #faxes

3. Just quit doing all this extra stuff and just go back to having a normal life. This would mean the blog, post-game shows, watch parties and community involvement/engagement would be curtailed. I really don't want this to happen, but it's an option.

4. Convince you of the need to get involved. 30,000 plus different people read this blog every month. If a small portion of you jump into the fight with us by joining the T Club, this could greatly help us breathe a little bit.

I challenge anybody to find anyone that's put as much into your Tennessee experience as we have here at your dysfunctional Basilio Radio Family. The need for a new app, which will create unexpected expense seemed like a proper time to have a conversation with you.

If you can't afford this but want to benefit from the information and the community here, GREAT! Everybody is encouraged to do their thing here however they feel led.

I believe we've created a unique community and am committed to keeping it going. How we keep this thing going and maintain all the balls in the air remains to be seen. BTW, I don't plan on bringing this up constantly so as to detract or become a distraction from your experience here. The way I look at this is if you see the need to get involved, great. If not, that's also fine. Just understand that I can't keep going at this rate.

I appreciate you listening and being there.

Tone

PS: I also need your input on getting a new app.... Please forward any suggestions you have to commonfan@gmail.com

Thanks

Tony

If you have dropped a four-letter word in the last few days it was most likely because your NCAA March Madness bracket is busted! For context, I’ve said a lot of four-letter words as my bracket is currently holding down the basement in every pool I am in.

Madness

Originally, I planned to post more of a bracketology blog before Thursday’s tipoff. However, the madness already started when I made the mistake of calling my twin brother to simply ask him “Texas Tech or NC State”..... [more]

We can now officially congratulate Caitlin Clark on breaking the record for the most points scored in women’s basketball!

Caitlin Clark is the biggest superstar in college basketball (men’s or women’s). That’s not just me being a fan, Caitlin Clark is HER! Caitlin scored 49 points on February 15th to pass Kelsey Plum’s NCAA record for the most career points in women’s college basketball..... [more]

The Vols did what they were expected to do against UConn. There's not really much to say about that game. The game this Saturday in Columbia, Missouri will decide whether or not this season is a failure in my opinion. If they Vols lose, they are staring at 8-4 and probably the Gator Bowl. Maybe Reliaquest..... [more]

The Vols are coming back to Neyland Stadium and I am returning after a discretionary bye week. I'll be honest with you. This year it seems like I've been writing the same preview over and over because the formula to win has been the same pretty much every SEC game. I didn't want to sound like a broken record so I needed a bit of a break from that.

I'll start with some general observations..... [more]
