Orange Throat leads things off for us today...

'Bachiliopolis:

Random musings and short shots as we cheer on our UT ball teams this weekend and support the Ellen Hatcher Memorial event:

TONY L. VITELLO'S Baseball Vols probably have to win the next two at Missouri this weekend after losing last night. AD Fulmer is encouraged by Vitello's scrappy season and is considering improvements to The Lindsey. It would be fun to see this team make it to the SEC Tournament and go on a run in Hoover, AL.

WE'RE NOT SURE what is going on with the Neyland Stadium project, given Fulmer's comments in Memphis. We don't agree with Tony that nothing needs to be done but we do think it is appropriate for Fulmer and staff to take a pause and study this carefully.

THE LADY VOL SOFTBALLERS host Monmouth, Ohio U. and James Madison in NCAA Tournament play at The Sherri this weekend. Assuming Tennessee doesn't stumble, it will probably be on to Athens to play Georgia. Pitcher Caylan Arnold has been battling tonsilitis for some time.

THE "BUTCHIFICATION" OF BAMA continues as Nick Saban hires former Butch Jones recruiting guru Bob Welton at Alabama. The personable Welton was popular around the UT athletics department but his personnel work led to an 0-8 SEC season in Year 5 for the Vol program. We're not sure anybody can mess up what Saban does in Tuscaloosa but we're certainly going to have fun with this.

SPEAKING OF BAMA, Saban is trying to keep Tide OL Brandon Kennedy from transferring to Tennessee or Auburn. Perhaps Kennedy is allergic to the deer antler spray and wants to move on. We think every college athlete should get at least one unconditional transfer per career and it is ridiculous the way colleges continue to trample on these kids' rights. Insiders think Pruitt will land Kennedy over Auburn if the SEC rules in the kid's favor.

JEREMY PRUITT GETS his first wide receiver of the 2019 class in Georgia four-star Ramel Keyton. Ranked #188 in the country, the 6-3 Keyton has a good frame and skills but not elite speed. He is the fourth Georgian out of seven commits so far.

Click to Karns Motor Company!
THERE ARE TWO WIDEOUTS among the top five-ranked players in Tennessee in this class. 247 Sports has Nashvillian Lance Wilhoite as #1 and Murfreesboro's Trey Knox as #5. Both are uncommitted and are being recruited by Tennessee. Good news that the #2 ranked player in the state, Memphian corner Maurice Hampton, is willing to reconsider his LSU commitment and visit UT. Hampton is an outstanding baseball player and was attracted to the Tigers' strength in that sport.

THE D.J. BURNS basketball recruiting tug of war continues between Tennessee and South Carolina but encouraging things are continuing to be said about UT's chances with PG Tre Mann. Mann is a high four-star, ranked #36 in the country by 247 Sports.

UT INSIDERS are predicting the university and Bev Davenport will settle her contract and she will not continue in the teaching assignment.

YOUR HUMBLE CORRESPONDENT will now go to one offering per week, on Fridays, with the UT sports season winding down to a merciful end. With a few exceptions like the men's basketball team regular season run, it has been one to forget.

Throaty...Amazing stuff. Win, lose or draw this weekend I can't help but be impressed by the wonderful job you've done here. You're my Larry Vitello.

On Neyland Stadium...How about this approach? Take $100 million and putting it back into recruiting. And I'm not kidding here. I'm not advocating cheating but if you're going to live in Rome.....

I'm still shaking my head over yesterday's program. MP 3 floored me with a call on it being since 2001 since Tennessee finished in the top 10 of a final poll. Can that really be? Are you freakin' kidding me? I must blog on this at some point because I can't comprehend this. I'm going to look around college football and compare Tennessee's 17 year absence (which is the longest in school history by far) to other SEC and signature schools in college football. I can't wait to dig into these numbers. What's staggering to think about is how far this could go here in Knoxville until Tennessee finish in a final top 10 poll. Consider this for a second. 2019? 2020? '21, '22? Tennessee could literally go well over 20 years without finishing in the final top 10 poll. That's pure HOH magic. Bottom line is that I'm not to blame and neither are you. That is unless of course you're a member of the vaunted HOH and you're reading this. In which case this is ALL your fault.

'Tony:

On Brian Hartman's question about whether or not Pete Rose should get stronger consideration for the Hall of Fame in light of society's softening stance toward all things gambling, here's a brain twister. Several years back I got a speeding ticket for going 75 in a 55 mph zone. Today the speed limit on that same road is 75. Can I get my speeding fine back?'

Dave

Jerseyville, Ill'

Speaking of Brian Hartman...He's all kinds of feeling it when it comes to Brad Stephens and his Celtics.

Brian Hartman
'The Boston Celtics are now up 2 games to 0 on the mighty King James led Cleveland Cavaliers. Game 3 is Saturday Night in Cleveland. It wasn't supposed to go like this. But here we are. LeBron James' physical and God-given basketball abilities are unmatched in most scenarios. Tuesday night, despite LeBron's 42 pt triple double, the Celtics won by 13 points. In game 1, the Celtics won by 25 points. That's an average victory margin of 19 points a game for Boston. No Kyrie Irving for Boston, no problem. No Kyrie Irving for Cleveland going up against Coach Brad Stevens and Boston, huge problem.

Stevens has been called a genius by several of his players. If you look at him, he looks smarter than the average guy. If you listen to him talk, he sounds smarter than the average guy. If you didn't know any better and met him for the first time, an NBA head coach might not be your first guess as to what his occupation is. Stevens could be successful in about any business venture he could attempt would be my first impression, and second impression, and third impression, and so on. If you or I can do anything half as well as Brad Stevens coaches basketball, we'd be very successful.

There is certainly little doubt that Brad Stevens' decision to give coaching a try, as he put it, has worked out for the best. Forget about what happens on the court, between the lines. I want to focus on the culture surrounding him. You never hear about any one player causing a negative distraction of some kind. Controversy and discord don't happen around the Boston Celtics locker room. Same exact thing at Butler. There is always great chemistry between players and players, players and coaches, head coach and assistant coaches. Players respect Stevens. Because Brad Stevens respect his players. He puts them in position to succeed and gives them the confidence to go do it. Most of the time, they do. Enough to be only 2 wins from the NBA Finals. WITHOUT 2 key players in Gordon Hayward and Kyrie Irving. The decision to shut Irving (Knee injury) down for the rest of the season was made because even the Celtics themselves didn't expect to have this good of a chance to make a run to the Finals. Let that sink in.

Click to Performance Medicine!
I really hate to do this, but I have to bring Nick Saban and Alabama into the fold here. Is Brad Stevens going to be the NBA's version of Nick Saban? Thanks to some shrewd moves by GM Danny Ainge, (and some not so shrewd moves by the Nets' and 76ers' GMs) Boston is set up for a potential dynasty. I'm not so sure even Nick Saban is as good from a coaching between the lines standpoint as Brad Stevens is. SEC football and the NBA are two different things entirely. Stevens appears to be very content with where he is in life. Saban appears to be always surly. Stevens looks to be balanced. With Saban, it's nothing but football all the time. You really can't tell by watching Brad Stevens during a game if the Celtics are winning or losing. Watching Nick Saban in game, you would always think that Alabama is way behind. My point, both successful, with opposite approaches. Me personally, I'll take Brad's way over Nick's.

In closing, what a blessing it is to have a coach this gifted in charge of one of my favorite teams. And what a blessing for many Celtics fans that Brad Stevens gave this coaching thing a try.

From behind the glass,

Brian Hartman'

FAQ's Asked Of Tony Per Our Relaunch Announcement:

Q: Tony, you didn't say anything about your daily show yesterday. Will you continue to do this?

A: Absolutely. I'm looking forward to year #24 with you.

Q: Tony, you used the word 'subscribe'. What Am I subscribing too?

A: Great question. 'Subscribe' is a misnomer. What you actually are doing if you choose to help us monthly (and we need this for budgeting reasons) is actually acting as a patron. The goal is to keep the content (ALL CONTENT, from postgame offerings to various podcasts) free for all.

Q: So, if I'm not subscribing and I'm already reading this, why give?

A: Because you value the content and our contribution to the market and you want to help us keep this stuff free for everybody.

Q: Are you going to beat us up for money all the time here?

A: Absolutely not. I will bring this up a few times heading into the football season as we attempt to meet our financial goals and create new programming. I'll also mention it in the post-game format as well as the regional programming. I will not however wear you out with this. Either you feel the need to help us or you don't. This is why I'm taking today to field some question I received after day one.

Q: What happens if this doesn't generate the revenue you're seeking?

A: We will scale back our online offerings accordingly. The blog itself could even disappear. I really don't want this to happen but will be forced to spend my time in the most profitable way necessary. That's why we're having the conversation. All my cards are on the table here.

Q: Where can I find these new podcasts, like that X-Cast?

A: Click on "Podcast" wherever you see it on the site, and it will take you to our Podcast page.

We can now officially congratulate Caitlin Clark on breaking the record for the most points scored in women’s basketball!

Caitlin Clark is the biggest superstar in college basketball (men’s or women’s). That’s not just me being a fan, Caitlin Clark is HER! Caitlin scored 49 points on February 15th to pass Kelsey Plum’s NCAA record for the most career points in women’s college basketball..... [more]
It's a Love Story

Jared (the redneck from Roanoke, VA) thought the Taylor Swift coverage would end with the Super Bowl, but this love story isn’t going anywhere. In a game that was four hours and 18 minutes (that’s a total of 15,480 seconds). Swift only appeared for around 55 seconds! 55 SECONDS from the moment the game kicked off to the overtime touchdown.

Missouri Game Preview
Posted: Thu, Nov 9th, 12:56 PM

The Vols did what they were expected to do against UConn. There's not really much to say about that game. The game this Saturday in Columbia, Missouri will decide whether or not this season is a failure in my opinion. If they Vols lose, they are staring at 8-4 and probably the Gator Bowl. Maybe Reliaquest..... [more]
Connecticut Game Preview

The Vols are coming back to Neyland Stadium and I am returning after a discretionary bye week. I'll be honest with you. This year it seems like I've been writing the same preview over and over because the formula to win has been the same pretty much every SEC game. I didn't want to sound like a broken record so I needed a bit of a break from that.

I'll start with some general observations..... [more]
