Happy Valentine’s Day! The day of love!

The day of love is probably not being felt by Robert Gillespie toward Tennessee's new Head Coach Jeremy Pruitt as Gillespie was fired yesterday. I'm not sure why the media in this town won't call this what it is. It wasn't a mutual parting of the ways. Multiple sources told me that Gillespie was fired and that this occurred due to an accumulation of things. Those factors include Pruitt wanting his own people on this staff and Gillespie not meshing well with the new staff members. This is ALL understandable, so why pretend otherwise? Are we pretending because Gillespie is highly regarded by this extremely knowledgeable coaching staff? Does firing Gillespie take some of the new car shine from Pruitt? I don't think so but apparently we're not allowed to call a spade a spade just yet with our new staff.

On Potential Replacements For Gillespie Our Recruiting Analyst 'X' Says:

'X' Says
'Tennessee would be well served to hire either Jay Graham, Dez Kitchings, or Chris Weinke on this staff.

Graham makes some sense because he and Pruitt have a relationship, Graham is a solid coach and Jay could probably help out n North Carolina recruiting ( that state is loaded with talent).

Click to YMCA of East Tennessee!
Kitchings makes the most sense when you look beyond Graham's ties to Tennessee and to Pruitt because he could coach running backs or wide receivers (the current Tennessee wide receiver coach (Johnson) coached running backs for 4 years at Tulane prior to taking the job at Memphis Kitchings coached at Vanderbilt before moving to NC State so he has SEC experience . Plus, Kitchings has a ton a connections in the Carolinas (probably best recruiter on NC State's staff). Interestingly, Kitchings is currently the recruiting coordinator at NC State.

Weinke knows the Alabama way and would immediately help us recruiting at the IMG Academy. 4 or 5 really good prospects are there Tennessee is currently recruiting.

Should be interesting.

The Basketball Vols are 19-6 and 9-4 in the SEC. Can you imagine that? Tennessee has a sneaky interesting game on the road Saturday at Georgia. That Tennessee struggled a big last night with South Carolina doesn't concern me. I called it right here in the blog and yesterday on the show. They are becoming everybody's game of measurement. This is how life is going to be for Grant Williams and Company for the rest of his time here. Tennessee is about to become the hunted. It's a different perspective playing from that side of the aisle. Tennessee better get used to it as it comes with the territory.

In case you're interested Valentine’s Day origins run deep.

'The ancient Romans may also be responsible for the name of our modern day of love. Emperor Claudius II executed two men — both named Valentine — on Feb. 14 of different years in the 3rd century A.D. Their martyrdom was honored by the Catholic Church with the celebration of St. Valentine's Day.' Courtesy NPR.

Then in the 14th century the holiday became linked to romance. And here we are!!!!

Make sure you get by Bradleyʻs and Knoxville Chocolate Company today and do something sweet for your sweetie.

I'm a romantic at heart all the way. Perhaps that's where my love of a great soul song comes from.

Here are my sports Valentines in honor of the occasion.

Tim Tebow: His Night To Shine Movement is the epitome of Christ's love pouring on others. I don't care where you are on the Tebow hate scale (and I've been a Tebow hater in the past for his rank jiveness) but you've got to tip your cap to a guy that spearheaded this terrific movement. Perhaps growing up with a special needs brother (Steve, 4 yrs older than me) has softened my heart to these folks but this is so special and laudatory. In a sports world that focuses on the unseemly among us, this is worth celebrating. Great for Tim Tebow!

Rick Barnes: That guy is getting Knoxville Chocolate Company candy from me today because he's my Valentine! He's brought Tennessee basketball back from the doldrums and has turned the Vols into a real deal tough guy team. I'll always appreciate this year's team of over-achievers. This group is getting the most out of everything they have. Sure, they've run out of gas a few times this year (Auburn, Bama) but they're maximizing what they have and making us proud. And Barnes? The guy is generous to a fault. Can you think of another coach that donated his money to one of his assistant coaches? There aren't many guys in his profession that would've stroked that check. I'm sending Rick Barnes a box of chocolate covered strawberries today from Knoxville Chocolate Company at Bradley's.

Bev Davenport: If she didn't act when she did, Mike Leach and his goofiness would be your head football coach at UT and we would be a laughing stock. Meanwhile, Bahama John Currie would still be a proxy for the House of Haslam. Bev Davenport even stepped in and stopped Reid Sigmon's appointment to AD by the House of Haslam AFTER Currie was dismissed. She stood tall that day for every common fan reading this. And like the martyrs before her on this Valentine's Day, Bev is probably going to eventually pay with her job because the HOH won't stop until they exact revenge on her. In fact some in the HOH circle are chattering around town on how they're going to eventually get her. So, love on Bev while you can as I've chosen to right here in this space.

Jason Kelce: The guy is undersized, old, in the way and the modern day Mr. Philadelphia. His speech encapsulated the heart and mind of every Philadelphian that grew up in the life and torture of that sports matrix. Being a Philly sports fan is like a bad dream that at times keeps getting worse. Yet there's pleasure in the pain because we live for moments like the one Kelce delivered. He dressed like a mummer and repped like a cab driver in that city! Ah, the Mummers...Link

As a long suffering Tennessee fan, I feel great for these struggling Nebraska nation members. The hunger to get that deal there back coupled with a talented young head coach could turn that ship around but the fact remains the Nebraska is in a league where they're geographically mismatched. How do you overcome this? Nebraska fans are going to try. The spring game is SOLD OUT. Link

FAQ's Asked Of Tony Per Our Relaunch Announcement:

Q: Tony, you didn't say anything about your daily show yesterday. Will you continue to do this?

A: Absolutely. I'm looking forward to year #24 with you.

Q: Tony, you used the word 'subscribe'. What Am I subscribing too?

A: Great question. 'Subscribe' is a misnomer. What you actually are doing if you choose to help us monthly (and we need this for budgeting reasons) is actually acting as a patron. The goal is to keep the content (ALL CONTENT, from postgame offerings to various podcasts) free for all.

Q: So, if I'm not subscribing and I'm already reading this, why give?

A: Because you value the content and our contribution to the market and you want to help us keep this stuff free for everybody.

Q: Are you going to beat us up for money all the time here?

A: Absolutely not. I will bring this up a few times heading into the football season as we attempt to meet our financial goals and create new programming. I'll also mention it in the post-game format as well as the regional programming. I will not however wear you out with this. Either you feel the need to help us or you don't. This is why I'm taking today to field some question I received after day one.

Q: What happens if this doesn't generate the revenue you're seeking?

A: We will scale back our online offerings accordingly. The blog itself could even disappear. I really don't want this to happen but will be forced to spend my time in the most profitable way necessary. That's why we're having the conversation. All my cards are on the table here.

Q: Where can I find these new podcasts, like that X-Cast?

A: Click on "Podcast" wherever you see it on the site, and it will take you to our Podcast page.
