Welcome to Friday...Before we get started, here's a reminder. We'll be on with you immediately following Tennessee/Kentucky tomorrow night with the Garza Law Tennessee Basketball Overtime. I'm thinking Tennessee will be a live dog tomorrow night. This is a game the Vols really need to win or this SEC season could get away in a hurry.

Basilio Nation:

Random musings and short shots as we ponder the sudden pivot of the Tennessee Basketball season:

BRUCE PEARL'S AUBURN TEAM shocked the Tennessee team and crowd with an upset on Tuesday night. The more fierce Tigers attempted 16 more field goals and would have blown the Vols out, had they shot the ball better from the field. The officials whistled 54 total fouls and 66 free throws were attempted.

RICK BARNES' TEAM is now 0-2 in the midst of a challenging seven-game SEC stretch and uber-talented Kentucky comes calling for a late night match tomorrow at The Thommy.

THIS GAME IS A COMPLETE MISMATCH on paper if you follow recruiting rankings. Kentucky's rotation averages a lofty #18 in the nation (according to the 247 Sports rankings) while Barnes' over-achieving rotation averages a #230 in the nation ranking (not counting transfers Daniel III and Darrington, who were unrated in high school).

HOWEVER, we look for the more veteran Vols to produce a great performance tomorrow night, having the confidence of a win over the Wildcats last year, although six Kentucky freshmen were dominating their high school competition at this time in 2017. A loss to Kentucky would open the possibility of an 0-7 start to the SEC season. While that scenario has to be considered unlikely, it would spell disaster for Tennessee's NCAA hopes.

ON THE FOOTBALL FRONT, we will be subjected to the torture of the Georgia-Alabama championship game and the bewildering conflict of having our new head coach leading the Crimson Tide defense.

RASHAAN GAULDEN becomes the second Vol to declare for the NFL Draft. Like John Kelly, Gaulden gave it all he had for a dysfunctional program and he goes with best wishes from Vol Nation. This kid is a football player who should make whichever team that takes him. We'd much rather line up with Gaulden in 2018 but this does give JP and staff another starting position to dangle in front of a great DB prospect.

LOOKS LIKE GAMECOCK assistant Bryan McClendon will stay put in Columbia and not come to JP's staff. So, Pruitt still has to name a WR and strength coach.

Throaty....Tomorrow is so Yuuuuuuge for this program. I just get the feeling that this is as close to a must win as you could possibly face 9 weeks before Tourney time. It almost seems absurd to suggest this but this team just isn't good enough to drop two home games and go where it wants to go.

This Kentucky team is lame by Kentucky standards and their fans know it. How much so? I was told this is the softest Tennessee/Kentucky game perhaps since TBA opened. You can buy your way in tomorrow night for less than $50. It's been a long time since UT/Kentucky was this affordable.

Worth Noting: The last time Kentucky lost 3 straight games in Knoxville was between 1979 & 1985.

It's Never Happened: Kentucky has NEVER lost 3 straight games in Thompson-Boling Arena. So, there's that.

Bottom Line: Tennessee should beat Kentucky tomorrow night though Kentucky has much more talent.

If You Believe In Talent: A #18 average ranking versus #230 isn't going to work out very much in your favor. With the odds stacked against you like this you must be on point. Tennessee needs to bring the energy tonight.

Inside Inside On WR Coach Hire: The WR coach hire is going to be interesting. Is Tennessee targeting a guy from the ACC to help with the Carolinas? And if the Vols are looking ACC where are they going? The idea of Lawrence Dawsey was blasted by Mike Huguenin who said he'd hesitate to hire a guy that was neither brought to A&M by Fisher or retained by Willie Taggart. Plus Dawsey isn't regarded a player development guy according to Huguenin.

Beano Sets Today's Agenda!!! I point you in the direction of Beano's blog (preview & link below) today as we begin your Friday. We'll surely be discussing this today on the show. Mike Huguenin of made a great point yesterday on the show in that Monday's Alabama/Georgia game sees no winners here. In fact, whom do we cheer for? And while we're on the subject of Alabama, Beano is considering waving his white flag their way. Not a bad idea if you ask me.

Wish I had realized how bad the PAC-12 sucked this year before picking a bunch of it’s members in several bowl pools. If there was a good team in the entire league it didn’t show....

Can’t believe how sick the Arkansas game made me feel....

1.Let's See Some Energy Tomorrow Night: It’s KENTUCKY, how do you not get fired up as a fan and as a student athlete!!! Thompson-Boling will be sold out again for this critical matchup for the Vols as they cannot afford to go 0-3 in SEC play. The fans will play a HUGE role in the outcome and assist this so called “immature” team back in the win column. The Vols will have to literally REBOUND more effectively than what was displayed against Auburn and I am sure the EFFORT will be back while the boys in blue are on the court.

2. Kentucky Is Who Their Record Says They Are: As A Team- 12-2 with notable wins against Louisville 90-61, Georgia 66-61, and LSU 74-71. Losses were to Kansas 61-65 and UCLA 75-83. Kentucky’s team is comprised of freshmen and sophomores and has no one on scholarship who is a junior or senior. They are the youngest team in the NCAA!!!

3. Who To Look Out For: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Freshman 6’6” from Hamilton, Canada and prepped at Hamilton Heights in Chattanooga, TN. 2017 ranked #20 by 247Sports. Averages 50% from the field (58-116), 45% from 3 (9-20), 88% from the free throw line (44-50), third on the team in scoring 12.1, and leads the team in assists (58) and steals (32).

Mark: That is some great stuff. From you. I agree that if Tennessee comes out lifeless tomorrow night we'll know this team is in trouble.

With most everywhere east of the Mississippi River facing Arctic conditions, it's a good weekend to stay inside. Luckily, there is a jam packed sports weekend to keep everyone occupied.

1. Tennessee basketball faces a true test of its collective toughness against Kentucky tomorrow night. The Vols must show more fight than they did in their lackluster effort against Auburn.

2. The presence of Anfernee Simmons makes this weekend a pivotal point for Rick Barnes and his program. Simmons is the kind of top flight recruit that can change the perception other prospects have of a school.

3. Kentucky is still very much a work in progress. John Calipari's incredibly young squad is still learning to play as a unit.

4. Wichita flexed their muscle against a Houston team that was trying to establish themselves as a factor in the AAC. The Shockers do not appear to be having any trouble transitioning to their new league.

5. Cincinnati found a way to escape with a win at Temple. That sets up a huge conference matchup with SMU on Sunday.

6. Georgia and Alabama face off in a game that will likely have significant meaning down the road. Both teams figure to be fighting for an NCAA bid come March.

7. North Carolina tries to bounce back from a tough loss at Florida State. Doing so in Charlottesville against Virginia will be no easy task.

Click to Clancy's Tavern & Whiskey House!
8. Auburn has the opportunity to make a real statement by backing up their victory at Tennessee with a win at home against Arkansas. The Razorbacks will be looking to avoid a two loss week.

9. Oklahoma at West Virginia provides us with what promises to be a great individual battle. Trae Young versus Jevon Carter should be a fascinating contrast in styles.

'Ridiculous Alabama Fan Story-

On Tuesday I had an Alabama fan that I know walk up to me to talk about the Monday night’s playoff games. He walked up, knowing I’m a UT fan, and started talking about the games. He and I went back and forth for a minute or two before I asked him what he thought about the upcoming National Championship. Knowing that the guy is an Alabama fan, his response was shocking.

This isn’t a direct quote, but he told me that he was torn. Torn?? I begged for him to explain…and his reasoning left me in awe.
His explanation had a two part answer. For starters, he doesn’t really want Nick Saban to win because he doesn’t really want him to tie Bear Bryant’s mark of 6 national championships. He also doesn’t mind Kirby Smart winning because he worked under Saban.

I couldn’t believe the words coming out of this man’s mouth. Has Alabama been so successful that even their fans are almost bored with winning?
I know that Tony talks about Alabama wanting world domination, but when someone with a straight face tells you that they wouldn’t mind their opponent beating their team in a National Championship…What else can you say?

Last week we looked at the top 5 things Vols fans would be glad to see go as 2017 came to a close.

This week we’ll take a look at the top 5 things for Vols fans to look forward to in 2018.

5- Softball/Baseball season- As I blogged about last week, Tennessee’s baseball program has a new man in charge this spring. Tony Vitello, who has the label of an outstanding recruiter, will lead his team into 2018 looking to lay the foundation of a successful program. When it’s having success, Tennessee’s baseball program can be a very fun one to follow. It was time for a change, and change is just what Vol Baseball fans are hoping for this spring. I’d be crazy to bring up the baseball diamond without mentioning the Lady Vols Softball team. Year in and year out, the Weekly’s put a team out there that performs extremely well. Constantly labeled with high expectations, Tennessee’s softball program is a ton of fun to watch, especially come tournament time. If you’ve never seen them play, I’d encourage you to do so. As 2018 brings another season, I look for the softball team to be at or near the top of the SEC once again.

4- Lady Vol Hoops- Holly Warlick, who has come under some criticism the past year or two, currently has her team ranked at #7 in the nation. They had a big win against a very good Texas team (currently ranked 8th with their only loss coming to Tennessee), and look like they could be a contender. As usual, Connecticut is at the top of the rankings and will be a favorite for the Final Four, but Warlick’s team looks like a team that could make a real run in March as well.

3- Stability at the Top- Phillip Fulmer is the new Athletics Director at UT. Whether you wanted him or another candidate, one thing seems certain: we now have someone in that position who truly understands how important it is to have a successful football program. It’s not just about wins and losses. If your football program carries the weight of a program like UT’s, its impact goes far beyond the gridiron. When a big time football program has sustained success, the monetary effects help the university all around. Things like university funds are directly benefited, and as your team plays on bigger stages with bigger audiences, your university’s branding reaches new audiences. In turn, this helps your enrollment for out of state students. I don’t have an exact answer for how athletics will do under Fulmer, but I can be fairly certain that he’ll do what he can to ensure that football is placed at the forefront of importance at Tennessee.

2- A potential NCAA Tournament Bid- While the outlook on this basketball season certainly looked a little brighter a week or two ago, Rick Barnes’ team still has a great opportunity to make the NCAA Tournament. With the ever-expanding field of 64, along with Tennessee’s scheduling and RPI strength, a strong showing in conference from here out would likely place the Vols in contention to make the tournament. And as we’ve seen in past years, anything is possible if your team gets a favorable matchup or two. Again, a rocky start to conference play is never a good thing, but there’s no reason to count this team out yet.

1- Jeremy Pruitt’s Tenure- Pruitt, who was named UT’s head coach in early is getting his defense at Alabama ready to face Georgia in the National Championship game. After that game’s conclusion Pruitt will head back to Knoxville and return to building his program. While there are some uncertainties, there are a ton of things to be excited about when it comes to Pruitt and the UT program. Whether it’s the change in schemes, the highly regarded coaches who Pruitt has surrounded himself with, or something else, it’s easy to see why folks on Rocky Top are excited to see Jeremy Pruitt and his staff get to work.

Until Next Time,
Go Vols!

Love the Bama fans....Part of me wants to fast forward to next fall but we must savor every day!!! Great stuff.... Look forward to seeing you tomorrow night on the Garza Law Tennessee Basketball Overtime.

Tony B's NFL Picks:

Chiefs Over Titans....But since 1994 the Chiefs are 0-5 in the post-season in Arrowhead Stadium.

Rams Over Falcons....Matt Ryan and Jones are scary but Gurley will keep them from getting the ball too much. Interesting game here.

Jags Over Bills.....Jags have too much defense for the Bills. Both teams are happy to be in the playoffs but more so with the Bills. This one probably shouldn't be close.

Saints Over Panthers....Saints are my pick to get to the Super Bowl. I guess you could say that I'm picking the Saints in this one.

Jerry Colquitt's NFL Picks:

Titans: 24
Chiefs: 20

'I'm counting on the Chiefs to continue to struggle at home in the playoffs.'

Falcons: 31
Rams: 27
'Rams defense isn't ready to win yet in the post-season.'

Jags: 20
Bills: 13
'Going to be an ugly game. Two uglies with Jags coming out on top.'

Saints: 34
Panthers: 17
'I'm thinking scrate not straight but scrate up dominance.'

FAQ's Asked Of Tony Per Our Relaunch Announcement:

Q: Tony, you didn't say anything about your daily show yesterday. Will you continue to do this?

A: Absolutely. I'm looking forward to year #24 with you.

Q: Tony, you used the word 'subscribe'. What Am I subscribing too?

A: Great question. 'Subscribe' is a misnomer. What you actually are doing if you choose to help us monthly (and we need this for budgeting reasons) is actually acting as a patron. The goal is to keep the content (ALL CONTENT, from postgame offerings to various podcasts) free for all.

Q: So, if I'm not subscribing and I'm already reading this, why give?

A: Because you value the content and our contribution to the market and you want to help us keep this stuff free for everybody.

Q: Are you going to beat us up for money all the time here?

A: Absolutely not. I will bring this up a few times heading into the football season as we attempt to meet our financial goals and create new programming. I'll also mention it in the post-game format as well as the regional programming. I will not however wear you out with this. Either you feel the need to help us or you don't. This is why I'm taking today to field some question I received after day one.

Q: What happens if this doesn't generate the revenue you're seeking?

A: We will scale back our online offerings accordingly. The blog itself could even disappear. I really don't want this to happen but will be forced to spend my time in the most profitable way necessary. That's why we're having the conversation. All my cards are on the table here.

Q: Where can I find these new podcasts, like that X-Cast?

A: Click on "Podcast" wherever you see it on the site, and it will take you to our Podcast page.
