Welcome to Friday of the longest week in UT Sports history. As you read this, Tennessee is 'trying to work a deal' with Washington State's Mike Leach according to multiple reports. I believe this is a accurate. After failing to get to the end zone with 6 other sitting head coaches, Tennessee is going for 2 with Mike Leach.

Mike Leach would be perfect way to end a bizarre week because he's crazy fun and this week has been anything but. This search will ultimately cost John Currie his job and the House of Haslam their tight stranglehold on UT athletics.

Mike Leach will be fun in Knoxville if he happens and maybe fun is enough for now. Juxtaposed with Dave Doeren and SchiaNO, a Mike Leach led Volunteer team feels like a breath of fresh air.

Click to The Garza Law Firm
The problem with Tennessee Football bringing Mike Leach in here is that he won't win big in Knoxville. Guys like him have their place in college football, but Tennessee remains one of 18 schools where you can win a National Championship. Tennessee should be serious about it's program and serious about this hire. Any hire should be made with the objective of competing nationally. There, I said it.

I have nothing against Mike Leach, but this job at this time calls for a serious hire. Mike Leach is lots of fun and he plays entertaining football but he's not going to scare the marquee programs in this league. He's just not.

Tennessee should pull back and get this weary search team off the road. If we feel fried, how must John Currie and his minions feel right about now?

Hey HOH, get your guy off the road and lets regroup for a couple of days, take a deep breath and see what shakes at the top of next week. Mike Leach will be sitting right there next week if you still decide he's next. This whole thing wreaks of a shot gun marriage which, come to think about it considering where they are today, is apropos.

I hate to be a wet blanket here but Tennessee Football can do better than Mike Leach.

We've made it through another week of UT Football. That's more than John Currie can say today. Because he's not going to make it much longer on the job in Knoxville. The big question is how did we get here? How could Tennessee be in this position? What follows is an attempt to explain some of the missteps that have sabotaged our search for a new coach.

Inside The Worst Search In College Football History How Do You Execute A Search That Has Executed This Fan Base?

Hired Wrong Athletics Director: The House of Haslam are smug actors. Jimmy Haslam knows more than EVERYONE (and I mean thousands) of you that will read this today. If Tennessee would've hired either Phillip Fulmer or David Blackburn, they would not be in the position. When SuperBooster Charlie Anderson was bragging to friends that Phillip Fulmer was going to be the new AD, Jimmy Haslam unilaterally hired John Currie even though Currie knew nobody here liked him. Word from inside is that Currie told Haslam, "but nobody likes me there." To which Haslam allegedly replied, "Yeah. But I'm the only one that matters. You'll be working for me." This hire set up a chain reaction of events that folks will study a long time from now for how not to execute a coaching search.

Surrounded Currie With Kids: John Currie doesn't have a veteran staff around him in what is a monster job. He's never been through anything like this and is getting very little help or guidance from his support personnel. He's truly on his own in this deal and is out of his depth.

Waited Too Long To Fire Butch: He should've been gone a good month before he was terminated. This would've put a public "Help Wanted" sign on UT's job besides boosting the latter part of the season. 2017 will go down as an all time disgrace. Every player deserves an apology from Jimmy Haslam.

Let Jon Gruden Rumors Fester: John Currie thought it was funny that you believed the Grumors. He thought it was amusing that you were fooled by the nonsense of Gruden to UT. And the longer it went on the more you believed and got your hopes up. Why wouldn't you get out in front of that and stop all the chatter? Have the Haslams ever heard of expectation management? It's always a great idea to set your own fanbase up for the kill.

Currie Made Promises He Couldn't Keep: John Currie told parents in our recruiting class and current players that he "already had a coach hired." Why do this? What a foolish way to proceed. This makes him look like a complete liar.

Went To The Bahamas Where He Became Johnny Bahama: Johnny Bahama was in the Bahamas watching hoops with his family so obviously he had his coach. I mean he promised the recruits that he had his guy. Only he didn't have anything of the sort.

Never Interviewed Nor Called Tee Martin: The sitting AD at UT MUST have a relationship with Tee Martin. Whether he hires him or not is immaterial. When you're Johnny Bahama Currie, you get on that airplane and you fly cross country to Tee Martin and give him the respect afforded a National Championship winning QB that happens to be a top assistant coach in college football. Failure to honor Martin with an early interview has resulted in unwanted heat in the VFL community. This is a foolish way to do business. Does Currie want to make enemies of former players? Pissing in the face of a beloved VFL is foolishness.

Never Had A Fallback Plan Once #1 Candidate Dan Mullen Went To Florida: Tennessee has been all over the board since Chip Kelly took that UCLA job. Ironically enough, Florida's hiring Mullen out from under Tennessee has created instability, the likes of which makes it look like Larry Scott is calling the plays. Tennessee has no plan.

Click to Performance Medicine!
Sunday SchiaNO: Need I say more. What a disgraceful attempt at hiring a coach. It's an absolute disgrace that Tennessee was going to try and ram this down a beaten down fanbase's throat. This was an affront to everybody with hearts, minds and ears. Thank God for you stopping this. And yes, I mean YOU!!!!

Offering The Job To Dave Doeren: Not only did Tennessee randomly pick that loser as the latest to get a raise from Bahama John's World Tour, but allowing Doeren to sleep on it was pathetic. Letting Gundy sleep on a decision is one thing, but a 500 coach on the hot seat holding all the cards overnight? Are you freaking kidding me?

'Tony World:

Random musings as the government experiment continues:

SO MUCH HAS HAPPENED since our humble contribution on Monday.

JOHN CURRIE has been turned down more times than a young Tony Basilio at the high school dance.

IT WOULD BE AN UPGRADE of the Schiano Episode to call it a debacle and there is a growing feeling around the UT athletics scene that it and the entire head coaching search will cost Currie his job. There is almost certainly a giant lawsuit coming from Schiano, and it will put the University in a very embarrassing situation.

BIG ORANGE NATION was in an ugly mood after a terrible football season and a hapless performance against Vandy in the season finale on Saturday. When the Schiano hire started to leak on Sunday, a wildfire was lit and a totally unprepared Currie and UT administration was caught flatfooted, and perhaps panicked in the way they quickly rescinded the hire.

ONE OF THE QUESTIONS now is Currie going to last long enough to make this hire? I don't know the answer to this today. I honestly don't because truly nobody knows. This is historic.

THE NAME OF THE DAY on Thursday was deposed Texas A&M HC Kevin Sumlin after Tony's successful campaign to derail Dave Doeren, but there didn't appear to be any credence to Sumlin chatter. While Tee Martin loyalists will almost certainly be disappointed that he won't be seriously considered as head coach this time around, there is reason to believe former Vol Kevin Steele would give Martin a significant role on his staff if he gets the UT job and in an ideal scenario, prepare Martin to be the successor a few years down the road. Steele will coach the Auburn defense in tomorrow's SEC Championship, and could take the UT job on Sunday.

FORMER LSU HC LES MILES would love to get a call. There is growing support for Lane Kiffin, but we are told that's not going to happen. There has been an occasional Mike Leach rumor here and there. It is really hard to say where UT goes from here.

WE INTERRUPT the madness surrounding the head football coach search to call your attention to Rick Barnes' improved Tennessee basketball team in an improved SEC. How improved is this league? It's early but three SEC teams are in kenpom.com's national Top 10 (Texas A&M #5, Kentucky #9, Florida #10).

OUR 5-1 BASKETBALL VOLS have risen to 27th in the country and fourth in the SEC. There is tons of hoops to be played but UT would be solidly in the NCAA Tournament if the bracket were announced today. Having already defeated N.C. State in the Bahamas tourney last week, the Vols have a golden opportunity to beat another ACC team on Sunday at Georgia Tech.

FOR AMUSEMENT ONLY (29-40 ATS Season, 4-5 Last Week): Yes, we were foolish in picking Kentucky to lose to Louisville by less than 10. We were also dead wrong on Gus Malzahn and his Auburn team.

Georgia (48) vs. AUBURN -2.5 in SEC Championship: Conventional wisdom says Auburn will have too big of a task to come off the Alabama win and beat a good Georgia team for a second time. However, we're now firmly on the "Gus Bus" and will take Auburn.

Great stuff.....

>I'm starting to think John Adams was right....Tennessee needs to retreat and reorganize this search over the weekend and live to fight another day. Then again, the Flying J Trial is off today in Chattanooga so Jimmy Coaching Shorts will probably be out there trying to make something happen. Would it be possible to lock him in a room somewhere so we can make this hire.

Tennessee needs the weekend to cool this thing off. Don't rush.

Marcos Garza Said That? If Tennessee was trying to sabotage its own football program it couldn't have done this any more perfectly.

Tennessee has a YUUUUGE Non-conference test with Georgia Tech on Sunday in Atlanta. Mark Griffin brings his patented Griffin's Three Pointers on today at Tonybasilio.com

Griffin's Three Pointers
'Griffin’s 3 Pointers- Georgia Tech 1. Battle Tested Early- Current record 4-1. Four of five games decided by 4 points or less. Notable games- lost to UCLA 63-60 in Shanghai, China and defeated Northwestern 52-51 at home.

2. Inconsistent Team Shooting- ONLY averaging 63.6 points per game, 41.5 FG%, 30% 3pt FG% but yet 74% at the free throw line.

3. Key Matchup- Sr 6’10’ 234 lb Ben Lammers vs 6’10’ 218 lb Kyle Alexander. Lammers leading the Georgia Tech team in EACH of the following categories averaging 34.6 minutes per game, 62.7 FG%, 89.5 FT%, 8 rebounds, 10 steals, 16 blocks, and 16.2 points per game.

Enjoy the game.

I'll talk to you postgame on Sunday on Tony B's app and web stream'

Stay tuned immediately following the game for your Garza Law Tennessee Basketball Overtime. We'll have a great time breaking down Tennessee/Georgia Tech. It would be great to see Tennessee win that game and perhaps sneak into the Top 20 next week.

Jack Tate...The Movie King presented by Smoothie King reviews another great flick.

'Two Great Films:
“Lady Bird” and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”

I was lucky to see two terrific movies this week. “Lady Bird” and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” are both 4 ½ star films, well written and featuring superb acting from a strong cast.

“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri details a lady whose daughter was raped and killed and where the authorities have arrested no suspects. Mildred Hayes (Frances McDormand) wages a one person war against the local sheriff (Woody Harrelson) and his deputy (Sam Rockwell). Harrelson’s character has lots of depth, allowing Rockwell to be the bad guy in this movie.

Rated R mainly for strong language, the movie has been extremely well received by 90% of the critics. I highly recommend “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”.

“Lady Bird” centers on the love/hate relationship between a mother (Laurie Metcalf) and her daughter Lady Bird (Saoirse Ronan).
The movie is very funny and heart-warming. Oscar nominee Lucas Hedges is great as the young man who becomes involved with Lady Bird. Every scene in the film is full of great dialogue.

The talented Greta Gerwig wrote the screenplay and directed “Lady Bird”.

“Lady Bird” is also rated R for language and sexual situations.
The audience at Regal Downtown West gave the movie a strong ovation at the end. That doesn’t happen often in theaters these days. I also highly recommend “Lady Bird” as do 95% of critics around the United States.

Jack!!! Thanks. I could use something with some rated R language after watching UT's coaching search for the past week. What a debacle this has become.

FAQ's Asked Of Tony Per Our Relaunch Announcement:

Q: Tony, you didn't say anything about your daily show yesterday. Will you continue to do this?

A: Absolutely. I'm looking forward to year #24 with you.

Q: Tony, you used the word 'subscribe'. What Am I subscribing too?

A: Great question. 'Subscribe' is a misnomer. What you actually are doing if you choose to help us monthly (and we need this for budgeting reasons) is actually acting as a patron. The goal is to keep the content (ALL CONTENT, from postgame offerings to various podcasts) free for all.

Q: So, if I'm not subscribing and I'm already reading this, why give?

A: Because you value the content and our contribution to the market and you want to help us keep this stuff free for everybody.

Q: Are you going to beat us up for money all the time here?

A: Absolutely not. I will bring this up a few times heading into the football season as we attempt to meet our financial goals and create new programming. I'll also mention it in the post-game format as well as the regional programming. I will not however wear you out with this. Either you feel the need to help us or you don't. This is why I'm taking today to field some question I received after day one.

Q: What happens if this doesn't generate the revenue you're seeking?

A: We will scale back our online offerings accordingly. The blog itself could even disappear. I really don't want this to happen but will be forced to spend my time in the most profitable way necessary. That's why we're having the conversation. All my cards are on the table here.

Q: Where can I find these new podcasts, like that X-Cast?

A: Click on "Podcast" wherever you see it on the site, and it will take you to our Podcast page.

The Vols did what they were expected to do against UConn. There's not really much to say about that game. The game this Saturday in Columbia, Missouri will decide whether or not this season is a failure in my opinion. If they Vols lose, they are staring at 8-4 and probably the Gator Bowl. The Vols are coming back to Neyland Stadium and I am returning after a discretionary bye week. I'll be honest with you. This year it seems like I've been writing the same preview over and over because the formula to win has been the same pretty much every SEC game. I didn't want to sound like a broken record so I needed a bit of a break from that.
