Today's blog is dedicated to that Volunteer spirit of brotherhood and my main man Ramon Foster. Let me brag on the former Vol who also happens to be one of the top guards in the NFL with the Pittsburgh Steelers. We were fixin' to have Ramon on the show Thursday when an idea occurred to us regarding my friend Mark who's a HUGE Steelers fan. Mark's mother was undergoing cancer surgery and Brian Hartman asked Ramon if he could call Mark and just tell a fellow Vol that he was thinking about him. Ramon's reply. "No problem." In fact, yesterday on the air I thanked Ramon for this amazing act of kindness for which he asked nothing in return. His reply? "Thank you for asking me to do this. I hope it helped make his day easier," Foster said. To Ramon Foster...VFL extraordinaire....I thank you for your wonderful gesture and the Volunteer spirit you continue to exude. Keep on keepin' on my main man!!!

Random musings as we ponder still another vestige of the Dave Hart Error, the steady decline of Lady Vol basketball.

HOLLY WARLICK IS THE WORST LADY VOL BASKETBALL COACH SINCE ... before Margaret Hutson. Hutson is the answer to a great trivia question only Beano, Debby Jennings or David Grim would know. Ms. Hutson was the UT women's basketball coach who Pat Summit succeeded.

Hutson's winning percentage in four years was .759. Warlick's is now .736 after a 20-12 season that ended with a fourth quarter collapse at Louisville. However, the Lady Vols' 2017 NCAA Tournament record is not the worst in modern school history. Summit's 2008-09 team was dumped in the first round after winning back-to-back national titles the two previous years. One could argue the program has never recovered from that season because this once dominant program has failed to make the Final Four in nine consecutive years.

WARLICK'S COACHING AND RECRUITING HAS BEEN INCONSISTENT, though she has a highly-rated class coming in for the 2017-18 school year. We wonder if all parties might be better served if new AD John Currie might have Donna Thomas retire (UTAD insiders will tell you she does nothing), move the popular Warlick upstairs to the senior women's administrator role and bring in a big-time coach who can challenge Geno Auriemma for supremacy in women's college basketball. No reasonable and knowledgeable observer thinks Warlick can do this job and it is becoming increasingly painful to watch.

"NO DEPTH CHART, WE HAVE AN ORG CHART," says our football coach Butch Jones. This is code for "we're not naming a starting QB for a long time. A very long time." Jarrett Guarantano could look better than Deshaun Watson in spring practice and Jones is not going to name him as the starter. The Vols are in a tough spot at quarterback. Quentin Dormady is a good passer who has been in the program two years, but he's not a good enough runner to be a serious threat in the read-option. Guarantano is a better fit but if you name him the starter, Dormady is probably gone. Jones and staff have had some misses on the recruiting trail and a Dormady departure would put Sheriron Jones as the backup. All this means they will wait as long as they possibly can to name a starter, which will be an interesting topic of discussion in August.

TONY TRIED TO SHEEP IT UP WITH SINCO and Dr. Sinclair barely bit on Wednesday. We ARE getting confirmation on one of Tony's themes, which is Butch is making some steps toward getting out of the way. Insiders tell us Butch is being less demonstrative in practice this week and is letting his coaches coach more.

GOOD NEWS FOR DON MAHONEY: He's now an offensive coordinator. Bad news: It's at Division II school Concord University. Tony consistently defended Mahoney during his tenure at UT, and we think it was because he was a silent partner with one of The Dean's sponsors, but of course we can't prove it.

VOLBALL THIS WEEKEND: Get swept at Mississippi State this weekend and we'll officially start the Dave Serrano firing countdown ..

Softball @ The Sherri:
Our UT softball team has been shaky out of the gate in SEC play. The Weeklys are toggling between sophomore Matty Moss and freshman Caylan Arnold on the mound, and Moss is having more success lately. Another Top 25 SEC team, Ole Miss, comes to The Sherri for three games this weekend.

Qwe Parker Dunk You Later: Thanks to Qwe Parker for the pre-game memories and the electrifying mix tape that he brought to Rocky Top. Here's hoping Qwe can land on his feet. Or more to the point perhaps can find a new place to really take off and fly.

Parker Leaves And???? Parker's decision to bolt opens things up for Rick Barnes to find immediate help. The most obvious option would be landing a graduate transfer.

'East Regional #7 S Carolina vs #3 Baylor Baylor -3.5 The Gamecocks had one job: Get rid of Duke. Easier to do within the confines of their own state. Now they must deal with a Baylor squad that spent a week as the #1 ranked team in the country back in January. Madison Square Garden at 4 Pennsylvania Plaza NY NY will have a familiar feel to it because S Carolina beat Syracuse in that venue back in December. Don't dismiss that. This game to me is a toss up Pick: SC covers, Baylor advances to the Elite 8

#4 Florida vs #8 Wisconsin Line: Florida -2 The Badgers are so much better than an 8 seed would suggest. Wisconsin has Final Four experience from 2015. When they beat 38-0 Kentucky. They will not be scared of this Florida team. Florida will not have 6'11" center John Egbunu, who was injured in February. Now they have to deal with Ethan Happ, Khalil Iverson, and Nigel Hayes who make up an imposing front line for the Badgers. This is a nightmare match up for the Gators. Especially if Wiscy can dictate tempo and take advantage in the paint. Pick: Wisconsin wins outright. The 2 pts is like Christmas in March.

Final 4 Pick: Wisconsin beats Baylor

South Regional
#1 North Carolina vs #4 Butler
Line: UNC -7.5 North Carolina has everything an aspiring national champion needs. Size in the paint, solid guard play, athleticism everywhere. If they can stay focused for 40 minutes, they will beat any opponent. But that has been their issue every now and then and it almost cost them in the second rd vs Arkansas. The ACC sent 9 teams to the tournament, and the Tarheels are the only one still standing 2 rounds in. I believe that will motivate them. Butler is in a bad spot. Coach Roy Williams won't need to feel lucky when this one is over. Pick: UNC rolls and wins by 10+

#2 Kentucky vs #3 UCLA Line: Kentucky +1 This is a rematch from early December, when UCLA ran past Kentucky in Rupp Arena. The Bruins have the firepower to beat anyone in the country, especially if they defend with any intensity. I can't say the same thing about Kentucky, and they don't always defend well enough to suit Coach John Calipari. I will put UK's back court of Malik Monk and De'Aaron Fox up against anyone. F Bam Adebayo is almost unstopable one on one. However his opportunities are limited due to high volume shooting from their guards. Their supporting cast just isn't good enough to win a national championship, bottom line. One more interesting fact: When Kentucky loses a game to Tennessee, only once since 1985 (the first year with a 64 team bracket) have they gone on to the Final Four. (1993) 1/15 under than scenario. That isn't why I'm picking against Big Blue, though. UCLA is just better. So is North Carolina
Pick: UCLA. It is interesting to note that #3 UCLA beat #2 Kentucky, then a few weeks later, Kentucky beat #1 seed N Carolina in one of the more entertaining games I watched all year.

Final Four Pick: North Carolina beats UCLA

Tony,

Two regional finals are set and the other two will get their participants tonight. When Sunday evening rolls around, we'll have the Final Four.

1. Oregon doesn't get enough credit for their toughness. They gritted their way to the regional final against a game Michigan team.

2. Gonzaga had just enough at the end against West Virginia. They now get a chance to break through and make a Final Four.

Click to 21st Mortgage!
3. Kansas will be hard to beat playing in Kansas City if they shoot the ball as they did versus Purdue. Never underestimate the value of a favorable regional site.

4. Arizona missed a chance to play the Final Four at home. Xavier just flat would not go away.

5. Butler will need to control tempo to have a fighting chance against North Carolina. If it gets into an up and down game, the Tar Heels will roll.

Click to TN Bank!
6. South Carolina tries to further extend their magical run against Baylor. The Gamecocks will need to hold their own on the boards to pull the upset.

7. Kentucky and UCLA will be played at track meet pace. The first team to lock in defensively will have a huge advantage.

Click to Clancy's Tavern & Whiskey House!
8. Wisconsin's somewhat improbably journey brings them to Madison Square Garden to take on Florida. The Badgers certainly have plenty of players on the roster who have participated in these big moments.

9. I'm more than a little surprised Eric Musselman ended up staying put at Nevada for now. Of course, he will return a fantastic team next season that may propel him to candidacy for even more high profile jobs.

World Cup Qualifying Edition

International Soccer is back on scene as the US shifts into World Cup qualification mode… again. I say again because based in their opening 2 games, it didn’t look like they ever started. Now the reset: an old/new manager, a return to the old ways, a fresh start. Will it work? We will know soon. The narrative will be that the US has its collective stars and stripes against the wall. While sitting at the bottom of the group with two losses is clearly unacceptable, the US won this group with two losses in the last qualifying cycle. In fact, Mexico won only two of the ten qualifying matches and advanced, so the US does not need to feel like the biblical Ruth pining for her long lost home of Moab.

As stated before, the new/old manager Bruce Arena is back in charge and he has selected his first group to get the US back on track. Some old names have returned to the lineup to reflect the philosophical change back to a more conservative and direct approach (that means playing more defensively, hoisting long balls, and being deadly on free kicks and corners). Players like Dax McCarty, Sasha Kljestan, Demarcus Beasley, and even Clint Dempsey are seen as safe pics for the squad. I put Clint in this mix (I enjoyed watching him play at Furman U. in my hometown of Greenville SC) because he is older and is coming off an extended time off due to an irregular heartbeat. He is a risk. We’ll know soon if he is the old conniving Clint or a stuttering statue. Overall, this first squad is made up of ever-willing, hard-nosed fighters who’ve been in some battles. The squad, however, lacks technical skill, imagination, and just plain talent. It’s a safe group who wont make mistakes but they will not entertain you. There are a few bright players to look for: Christian Pulisic , Darlington Nagbe (love that name) and Jordan Morris are three younger Americans that bring some flare to the game.

Tonight the US play Honduras and then travel to Panama. Its imperative they get no less than four points from these two matches (a win and a draw). Anything less will be disturbing, though not collecting all six will be disappointing. The US took ten of the possible twelve points from these teams last cycle and will need them again with two losses already absorbed. There is only one excusable loss left and that’s in Mexico City in the violent, sordid, and sultry Azteca stadium.

Here come the Yanks!

Don’t Tread on Me,
Soccer Dave

Happy Anniversary Baby...Got You On My Mind:
'Tony,

This year is the 50th anniversary of the 67 team that won the SEC and made our first appearance in the NCAA Tourney. Tom Boerwinkle, Ron Widby, Tom Hendrix, Bill Justus and Billy Hahn were the starters on the team that beat Kentucky twice.

Our first game was against Dayton which in those days of only a few teams being in the tourney was the equivalent of a Sweet 16 game. They were a good team with one Superstar whose name was Donnie May. It was a back and forth game and we ended up losing by 1 or 2 points as I recall. Dayton went on from there to make it to the Finals against UCLA where they were destroyed by Lew Alcindor and company.

I have often wondered what would have happened if we had won that game and maybe gone on to the Finals. There was no way we would have beaten UCLA but would the National Exposure we would have gotten maybe have propelled the Vols to national prominence? Remember this was before the days of ESPN and the Internet so getting to the Final 4 was really a publicity gold mine.

Oh well as with many things in the UTAD the past half century we can always wonder, "what if?"

Doug in Chatty'

Doug in Chatty....It's never too late to say "happy anniversary." We have had so much near fun around here. I'm talking near fun.

Rather than a New Year’s Day bowl appearance or a final four appearance, I would much rather see this for football and basketball:

1) Win the SEC East before I’m deceased.
2) Win the SEC Basketball tournament.

Both are sufficiently rare that neither might ever happen again in my lifetime.

We can now officially congratulate Caitlin Clark on breaking the record for the most points scored in women’s basketball!

Caitlin Clark is the biggest superstar in college basketball (men’s or women’s). That’s not just me being a fan, Caitlin Clark is HER! Caitlin scored 49 points on February 15th to pass Kelsey Plum’s NCAA record for the most career points in women’s college basketball..... [more]

Jared (the redneck from Roanoke, VA) thought the Taylor Swift coverage would end with the Super Bowl, but this love story isn’t going anywhere. In a game that was four hours and 18 minutes (that’s a total of 15,480 seconds). Swift only appeared for around 55 seconds! 55 SECONDS from the moment the game kicked off to the overtime touchdown.

Missouri Game Preview

The Vols did what they were expected to do against UConn. There's not really much to say about that game. The game this Saturday in Columbia, Missouri will decide whether or not this season is a failure in my opinion. If they Vols lose, they are staring at 8-4 and probably the Gator Bowl. Connecticut Game Preview

The Vols are coming back to Neyland Stadium and I am returning after a discretionary bye week. I'll be honest with you. This year it seems like I've been writing the same preview over and over because the formula to win has been the same pretty much every SEC game. I didn't want to sound like a broken record so I needed a bit of a break from that.

I'll start with some general observations..... [more]
