Listener Watch Party: Saturday at Bearden Hill Fieldhouse. I'm there at 7pm. It's going to be an awesome time! Let's back in the win column together. I'm looking forward to watching our Vols run wild in that game. Will they? It's never dull around here.
Thanks to Donovan Long of WVLT TV 8!!! He did an AWESOME STORY on our radio family and what we're doing with Amachi Knoxville regarding our plans for the kids for what we're doing around the Tennessee Tech game. I've gotten some pretty good response in the past 36 hours! Let's keep up the steam here in honor of General Neyland. Let's get as many youngsters (that have never been to a game) as humanly possible in Neyland Stadium for that game. Could be a life changing event for kids of incarcerated parents that have only dreamed of actually attending a Tennessee football game. Every young person being mentored in that program could be attending along with their mentor. We can do this together!!! This is really great stuff. Vol Nation killed me yesterday with some of the generous offers from folks. I'm hoping to have an announcement on a tailgate soon. This is really coming together. Let's put on some more steam!!! Here's the link to the story on Channel 8 here in Knoxville. Excuse my ugliness.

Donovan really captured the spirit of what we're attempting to do here! Let's keep it up and give these special people the day of their lives.

We have some really well informed and dedicated listeners to this blog/show. This is some terrific work turned in by Brandon and I wanted to shine the light on this right here and now.
'Tony,
You posted some numbers from an Auburn chat board Tuesday concerning holding penalties called against the pink ripple's offensive lineman. The numbers seemed low, but I really had no idea how they compared to other teams. Always on the lookout for another reason to hate bama, thought I'd compare the Vols #'s during the same time frame. Visited utsports.com, went through each game's play by play in the box score, noting only when a Vol offensive lineman was flagged for holding (accepted or not). Did not note a holding call on a non offensive lineman. I did this during down time and breaks at work the past couple of days, so don't quote the #'s as gospel.
From 2007-2015:
9 years
114 games
7,809 offensive snaps
60 holding penalties AGAINST THE OL
60 holding penalties against OL or 1 every 1.9 games.
OL is flagged for holding every 130 snaps.
Tennessee had zero holding penalties on starting offensive lineman during 57% of their games.
Only 41 times in 114 games was A TENNESSEE OL flagged for holding while trailing or tied on the scoreboard.
During 73 conference games, their OL was flagged for holding 47 times (1 every 1.5 games).
During their remaining 41 games, 13 times (1 every 3.1 games).
Interesting Breakdown…
Holding Penalties against OL:
9 games vs. Florida……….4
9 games vs. Georgia…………3
9 games vs. Alabama……….9
Assuming the Auburn chat board #'s are close to accurate, looking at this side by side there are definitely some things that stick out.
In 7 fewer games Tennessee's OL has been penalized for holding 23 more times than bama's OL and 5 more times than bama's entire offense.
In the 9 games against bama during that span the Vols OL has been called for holding 9 times while bama's has only seen 1 such call. Certainly some of the discrepancy can be attributed to the talent gap over the years, but 9 to 1 in 9 games on something that is said to happen on every play. I don't know. I'm in no way a conspiracy theorist, but the numbers are hard to ignore. Maybe it's like the Jordan rules back in the day, more than an orchestrated effort. Regardless, even the hint of a perception of impropriety should be cause enough for SEC to move from Birmingham to Atlanta or Charlotte.
Go Vols
Brandon'
Brandon: Firstly, great hearing from you! That is some wonderful work from you. Of course you know I'm a conspiracy guy. We all know Bama is well coached but we also all know that holding could be called on any play and all the time. So why does it get called more on Tennessee when they play Bama? And why does holding get called more frequently on the rest of the SEC than Bama? Again, I know they're well coached but they're sucking the life out of the SEC. Enough already! Great stuff by you my friend.

Tony B:
I decided to play along with your Tony Awards Telecast last night on In The Pocket. That was fun stuff. Here's how I voted.
Tony Awards MVP Vols
Dobbs
Hurd
Jumper
Barnett
Other
MY VOTE: Dobbs has yet to have a real winning performance this year like we've seen from him in past years. He's been good, yes, but nothing that can be directly correlated to a Tennessee dub throughout the entirety of the game. GA was awesome but doesn't count. Maybe that happens this weekend...he does have a history of that, but through this point in the season, it's Barnett and Jennings Without A Doubt who have given us the upper edge in games won this season.
UT Play Of Half Yr:
Ga Pass at end of game
TD @A&M. Dobbs caught
Jennings Catch Fla
Downed Punt By Trevor Daniel
MY VOTE: Dobbs throw and Jennings catch at the end of the GA game is BY FAR WAD the Play of the Half Year. I'll never forget where I was and what the reaction was with family when that happened- I'm sure most Vols fans are the same. What a memory. This season is awesome for that play ALONE! And the FLA win. Let's not forget the beauty of what's happened this season.
MVP SEC
Hurts. Bama
Dobbs Tennessee
Bama Defense
Chad Kelly Ole Miss
MY VOTE: As much as it pains me to say it, Hurts from Bama has to be up there. Maybe Fournette, but the way Hurts has stepped in as a freshman and totally owned defenses sets him aside.
Biggest Surprise Vols:
Jennings
John Kelly
Jumper
Shy Tuttle
MY VOTE: Again, I think it has to be Jennings. With a position that's suffered to find a bit of vigor behind it as much as the receiving corps has, Jennings has been a breath of fresh air. His swagger and attitude is what the whole damn team needs with a coach as stiff as Jones and I hope he continues to be a wrecking force of havoc for years to come. Go Vols and Go Jauan Jennings!
Coach of half yr SEC:
Saban
Jones
Malzahn
Sumlin
MY VOTE: Screw Saban. Get that ish out of here. I'd have to say Malzahn on this one. With a team that looked to be on the brink of collapse, Auburn has really come around.
Freddie Mercury Big Disgrace Award:
Mizzou Football
SEC Officials
SEC Office in Birmingham
Kirby Smart
MY VOTE: You've never been so right when it comes to Bama being the favored child of the SEC office. It's sad to see money rule the way it is this season in Alabama. The reffing has been one sided in any matchup the Bammers have played in this year and it's time to dethrone them. Who's going to do it? Go Coach O! The BIG O never fails.
Tennessee MVC. Most Valuable Coach:
OC Mike Debord
DC Bob Shoop
RB's Robert Gillespie
DL Steve Stripling
LB's Tommie Thigpen
ST Larry Scott
MY VOTE: This should be "Most Disappointing Coach" and I believe you'd have a tight competition between Debord and Shoop. For a guy that was so highly touted, Shoop's D sure has given up a bundle of points. Then again, lose your star linebackers, corner, senior lineman, a plethora of others and any DC in the country might have a tough time. We'll give him a pass. Debord on the other hand is a complete mystery. 2nd best rushing attack in the history of the program last year and now this. Jones has to find a new age, vibrant offensive play caller and he has to do it now. He needs to unclench the reins on that disaster of a playbook and get a BALLER IN HERE! WAD. Don't get me wrong, they have their moments, like the pass to Dobbs at Texas A&M- that's genius, but where's the genius on the common plays? If we have to pick one, I'd say either Gillespie or Thigpen because both of those dudes seem to do their job to a point that's rarely ever worth criticizing. You could say Stripling too because of the way Corey Vereen has shown out this year. Maybe when Scott recruits one of his dudes and we get an offensive scheme that's worth a crap, he'll be up for consideration.
GO VOLS, Tony.'

'Tony,
I agree 100% with what you wrote on Monday's TonyBasilio.com blog:
"Throw The Ball Deep: I watched 16 hours of football easily over the weekend and can honestly say that the game if over officiated at the college and professional level. With this in mind, why not throw the ball more downfield? I'm talking to all teams here. I saw a bunch of QB's from coast to coast get bailed out on deep passes by over-eager officials."
Your point is well taken. Now, if we get the opportunity and privilege to take another shot at Alabama, we will have to have a completely "burn the ships," unorthodox mindset and game plan. The offense is going to have to score 35 or more points.
Dobbs will need to be running the ball even more than usual. He is going to have to have to be rushing the ball and moving out of the pocket from the first snap. This plan can't be a halftime adjustment. Giving Dobbs the ball is part of an assertive game plan that will need to be combined with some new wrinkles, new formations, new plays, and four down play.
Just as importantly, I decree we throw the ball down field, at least 2 attempts per quarter of 40 or more yards. If Dobbs has to be rolling out to buy time then so be it, but the deep ball has to stretch the field.
If Dobbs throws it deep, the following results will happen:
1. A completion for a deep gain or TD.
2. An incompletion.
3. An interception (consider it a good punt).
4. An offensive pass penalty.
5. A defensive interference penalty.
The zealous officiating has changed the risk/reward ratio of the forward pass. I have been harping on this for the last several years as receivers like Calvin Johnson and Julio Jones got interference calls as shorter safeties were forced to be aggressive. It's currently so much easier to get the flag thrown. Yet Butch Jones prefers to run his tall beautiful receivers on and off the field like volleying tennis balls instead of running them on deep posts and streaks.
Against Alabama, TN has to UNLEASH both Josh Dobb's legs and his arm. Dobbs can give TN a credible shot to beat this Russian machine and their curmudgeon leader. Alabama is beatable.
"He's not a machine! He's a man!"

MidState Heath'
Right on Heath. I'm telling you that the way football is over officiated these days at all levels, if I had receivers close to the size of the Vols, I'm constantly throwing 50/50 balls. You tell your WR's that if it isn't there just knock the ball down. Throwing the ball downhill is like working hard every day as far as I'm concerned. You have to be in it to win it. Why not let Malone and Jennings compete with smaller DB's? Maybe we see this starting Saturday at South Carolina.
The story Dan Wolken of USATODAY today about Rick Barnes at the Peach Jam a few years back at Texas was all time! If you missed it, go back and check it out during yesterday's second hour. Dan expressed in a Tweet last week that he was concerned that Barnes was done at the end of his Texas run. His story yesterday was telling. I sure hope Barnes has found some diamonds in the rough on this year's squad because he's got literally nothing brewing for the future.
I noticed where Steve Forbes was talking junk on Rick Barnes and the Vols at an ETSU fan/student pep rally. Both ETSU and Chattanooga are smelling blood in the water on the Vols this year. Don't shoot the messenger, but from where I sit the Vols will be fortunate to split those two games.
I saw where 24/7 is projecting 6-10 228 pound Zach Kent to Northwestern over Tennessee. Would losing Kent to Northworstern an all time low? Kent is thin, pasty, and apparently not interested in playing hoops in March. At this point, Rick Barnes will lead the Vols onto the court under a Little T. He's your Low T Coach. If the Lady Vols have their own logo, why not one for the Vols under Barnes? Somebody design him a Low T. He's the worst.
You do realize that Northworstern plays in an arena built in 1952. They did renovate it in 1984. It has a 8,117 seating capacity. Zero NCAA Tournament appearances in history. ZERO. Could you imagine losing a kid, any kid, THIS KID to them?
In the same breath Butch Jones and staff got a commitment from a 4 star LB out of Alabama.
