'49-10 Did anyone see that coming? You can best believe this old Volunteer didn't see it. That was as bad a beat down as I've ever witnessed in Neyland Stadium. That was without a shadow of a doubt the most complete Alabama team I've ever seen step foot on Shields-Watkins Field. They rushed for 438 yards on us, averaging 8.9 yards per carry. I thought that QB up at Louisville was a special cat, but there's no way he's any better than Jalen Hurts for Alabama. If that kid has a big game vs. A&M this coming weekend, I think you'll see him jump to the front of the line in the Heisman race. He's that good.

I think even if we had all of our players back from injury, that we wouldn't have beat this Alabama team. Not on this day, anyway. That was a nightmare of epic proportion. I left the game early in the 4th quarter and I don't know how I made it that long. I had a very nice victory cigar all ready to fire up and smoke after a big Vols win. Needless to say, I threw it out of the car window as I pulled out of the G10 garage like a bat out of hell.

I'm not going to knock our coordinators on either side of the ball after this whipping because we just had too many injuries to compete with that machine we faced. Now, don't get me wrong, I wasn't happy with the play calling and I'm not making excuses for us by bringing up all of our injuries, but it is what it is. You can't lose that many players before and during that game and expect to be competitive. It finally caught up with them. I think it was Tony or Beano that said on the 5th Quarter/Fan Reaction Show after the game, that if they were Coach Jones, they wouldn't even show the team the game film. They would just throw it out the window. I couldn't agree more!

I do have one bone to pick with Bob Shoop. He spoke at the Knoxville QB Club on Monday and made a horrible statement about the officiating. He said, "I hear they honor officials of the week in Alabama, too. They were the guys that called our game on Saturday" Let me put this in some context for you. Every Monday at the QB Club they honor local prep officials. Obviously, Shoop was probably making a joke, but after you get your ass handed to you 49-10, it's not wise to say anything about the officiating. Junk like that gets out and you can believe it won't be taken in context. It makes him and us look like a bunch of sorry sore losers. The point I'm making here, if you want to say something or joke about the officiating, don't do it after you get hammered by 40 points. It's not a good look, joking or not.

I'm done talking about that game. Let's talk about some positives. All of our season goals are still intact. We got a split of that 4 game gauntlet and came out 2-2 and were a hair away from coming out 3-1. We've got an open date before we return to the field in Columbia to take on a bad South Carolina team on October 29th, and that will give us some much needed rest and time for some guys to get healed up. I believe we'll be able to get a few guys back and we should be able to finish out the regular season with a 10-2 mark. Other than the trip to Columbia, the only other road game is at Vanderbilt to close out the season on November 26th.

I fully expect us to be in Atlanta representing the East in the SEC Championship Game. I just don't see Florida being able to run out. They have to go on the road to LSU and Arkansas and there's just no way they win both of those games. Hell, I wouldn't be shocked if Georgia upset the Gators in Jacksonville at the Cocktail Party.

I'm not going to let this Alabama game get me down. This is still a special season and there's no way I'm letting those Bammers get the best of me. We get healthy come December and they might find themselves in a game with us in a rematch. I don't care who you are, it's tough to beat a team twice in one season. I promise you if we are healthy come December, it won't be another 49-10 butt whoopin' no matter what. That's all for this week, folks. I say let's all enjoy this open date. It's a beautiful time of year here in God's Country!

Have a Great Day and Go Big Orange!

Tennessee and South Carolina announced for 7:30 next weekend on either ESPN or ESPN2. Going to be a serious fight when these two teams get together. Expect the unexpected. The unexpected? Perhaps Tennessee will use Hurd and Kamara dare I say together effectively in this game. That would be something. Just kidding. What I'm not kidding about is that this Tennessee team can't afford any more injuries between now and that game. If I'm Butch Jones, my football team doesn't hit one time between now and SC. I don't hit, not even a little bit.

Here's the latest on the walking wounded at UT coming out of the Bama game.

Dylan Weisman: Had a concussion issue from A&M game and didn't dress for the game. He's expected to be back for South Carolina.

Foreman: Sustained a shoulder injury on the week leading up to Bama. He was in street clothes for that game. He's expected to be available for South Carolina. Then again this is 2016, so anything is possible.

Darrin Kirkland Jr: Progressed really nicely after being injured earlier in season. He was practicing last week and was re injured just a few days before the game. Sources tell me Kirkland injured the exact same ankle with basically the same injury. In terms of his return, this is up in the air. I believe he’s expected back by Tenn Tech perhaps.

Kahlil McKenzie: Pectoral injury…Out for the season….

Chance Hall: Sustained Knee injury in Alabama game. His injury may have occurred on the same play that also took out fellow offensive lineman Brett Kendrick. As far as Hall's prognosis going forward, I'm working on this. I believe he’s back for South Carolina.

Brett Kendrick: He had a terrible week leading up to the Alabama game. First of all, he was fighting a terrible case of strep throat leading up to the game for which he was medicated. He toughed it out and gave it his all but was obviously not himself before suffering a left ankle injury. Kendrick was given IV's before the game to help him make it through the day. Not only did Kendrick injure himself but he had a high fever all day Sunday as well. That poor young guy. As far as a prognosis, I believe he had an MRI yesterday and Tennessee is hoping he'll be able to go at South Carolina.

In summary....This is a 10 day period where Tennessee is hoping to get some of the other walking wounded healthier and they have to worry about the players on the list above as well. This is truly getting to the point where what could be an excuse is a reality.

Doc asked an interesting question on the air yesterday. Knowing now what he does about Alabama and the beat up nature of his football team in that game, do you think Butch Jones wishes he had a do over in the A&M game? It's well worth discussing. Doc brought up a great point that Tennessee had a chance to get aggressive twice in that game. At the end of regulation the Vols had the ball on the one and a half yard line down a point and elected to kick an extra point to tie the game. Tennessee also elected to kick a short field goal in overtime on 4th and 8 inches. If I'm Butch Jones, I would've gone twice there. Of course without the first conservative call the second one wouldn't have happened.

My mentality in the moment (and on the Smartway/Garza Law Firm 5th Quarter Fan Reaction) was that I would've gone because stealing that game at A&M was just sitting there for the taking. Again, no right answers but Butch could've built up a ton of equity by going for the game right there. Butch has the uncanny ability to look super aggressive in his demeanor while being as conservative as possible. I wonder if he had a do over in light of Bama's dominance and his team's fragility, would he play the end of the A&M game differently. It's really interesting.

Finally...I'm considering doing something around the Tennessee Tech game and want to know what you think. I've always thought it would be a great thing to collect tickets for a buy game like Tech and distribute them to families that have NEVER BEEN TO A GAME IN NEYLAND STADIUM. So, I need your help in two ways...Would you consider parting with your tickets for something like this and helping to spread the word on this so that we could collect as many as possible? And do you know service groups in the area that I could place these tickets with so that we could touch as many folks as possible? I'd be curious if you have any ideas to augment this plan while I'm still formulating this.

Tomorrow.....T Mail, Plus 'What if' on the 2016 season. Plus Rick Barnes Canadian Pipeline has dried up!

We can now officially congratulate Caitlin Clark on breaking the record for the most points scored in women’s basketball!

Caitlin Clark is the biggest superstar in college basketball (men’s or women’s). That’s not just me being a fan, Caitlin Clark is HER! Caitlin scored 49 points on February 15th to pass Kelsey Plum’s NCAA record for the most career points in women’s college basketball..... [more]
It's a Love Story

Jared (the redneck from Roanoke, VA) thought the Taylor Swift coverage would end with the Super Bowl, but this love story isn’t going anywhere. In a game that was four hours and 18 minutes (that’s a total of 15,480 seconds). Swift only appeared for around 55 seconds! 55 SECONDS from the moment the game kicked off to the overtime touchdown.

Missouri Game Preview

The Vols did what they were expected to do against UConn. There's not really much to say about that game. The game this Saturday in Columbia, Missouri will decide whether or not this season is a failure in my opinion. If they Vols lose, they are staring at 8-4 and probably the Gator Bowl. Maybe Reliaquest..... [more]
Connecticut Game Preview

The Vols are coming back to Neyland Stadium and I am returning after a discretionary bye week. I'll be honest with you. This year it seems like I've been writing the same preview over and over because the formula to win has been the same pretty much every SEC game. I didn't want to sound like a broken record so I needed a bit of a break from that.

I'll start with some general observations..... [more]
