'Fellow Mourners:

Random musings as we ponder the aftermath of what could be described as, all things considered, the worst so far in the 45 games of the Butch Jones Era:

SHOOP'S DEFENSE POOPS THE BED: Injuries are certainly the biggest reason, but DC Bob Shoop's Tennessee defense has become shockingly bad. We have surrendered 791 yards and 9 TDs on the ground in the last two games. We heaped way too much Shoop and his magical abilities before the 2016 season. Tennessee now stands an astounding 107th in the nation in rushing defense, 88th in total defense and 84th in scoring defense. Shoop's defense looked like they weren't aware of Alabama QB Jalen Hurts' running ability as he rambled for 132 yards and three touchdowns.

PRUITT AIN'T NO CHAVIS: Mike Debord deservedly received lots of praise for the game he called against Texas A&M DC John Chavis a week ago. Alabama DC Jeremy Pruitt's defense completely dominated Debord's offensive unit on Saturday. UT started out with a nifty look of Jalen Hurd and Alvin Kamara in the backfield with Josh Dobbs and we never saw it again. Don Mahoney's OL got stuffed and abused. To be sure, this Alabama defense is as good as or maybe better than any in the Nick Saban era at Alabama, but this was awful coaching and playing.

HURD GOING DOWNHILL, NOT RUNNING DOWNHILL: Hurd had his least productive game since his freshman year, carrying 13 times for 28 yards and catching three balls for -1 net yards. This comes after the Georgia game, which saw the talented senior gain only 42 yards on 10 carries.

TYLER BYRD UPDATE: Freshman Tyler Byrd carried once for six yards and caught one pass for one measly yard. In seven games, the talented freshman who was switched from corner to slot receiver in preseason, is averaging a paltry 20 yards per game.

WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE? Jones didn't catch a break with four straight games against Georgia, Florida, Texas A&M and Alabama, but that's SEC football and why you have to build a defense that can handle it. With a week off, Jones and his staff need to make some big changes to give themselves the best chance to get to Atlanta and to position the 2017 team to avoid a big step backward. We'll talk about that all week on the Tony Basilio Show and more in this space on Friday. Hint: we're going to suggest Butch Jones shore up his defense as the first priority.

AROUND THE SEC:

ALABAMA (7-0, 4-0 SEC): No one before the season foresaw the emergence of freshman dual threat Jalen Hurts. The Tide will be hard to beat as long as they keep him healthy. Alabama now hosts Texas A&M in another battle of unbeatens and the Tide is favored by 16.5.

TEXAS A&M (6-0, 4-0 SEC): If John Chavis got schooled by Tennessee OC Mike Debord, what is Joey Freshwater going to do to him?

SOUTH CAROLINA (2-4, 1-4 SEC): The Gamecocks should come into the Tennessee game on Oct. 29 well rested. They had an open date Saturday and have a buy game with UMass(Cocks favored by 21) this week. Bob Shoop should note that the Gamecocks are 128th in scoring offense and 126th in total offense. (Note: there are only 128 schools in FBS)

KENTUCKY (3-3, 2-2 SEC): The Wildcats are currently a 3 point home underdog to Mississippi State after enjoying an open date. Don't look now, but Kentucky is tied with our Volunteers for second in the SEC East. A win over the Bulldogs would be huge for HC Mark Stoops' campaign to land UK in a bowl game and keeps them alive in the SEC East.

MISSOURI (2-4, 0-3 SEC): Mizzou QB Drew Lock completed four passes to his team for 39 yards at Gainesville and two to Florida DBs, which were hauled back for touchdowns. The Tigers host MTSU Saturday.

VANDERBILT (3-4, 1-3 SEC): As they are good at doing, Vandy drug Georgia into a low-scoring, butt-ugly game and came out on top, 17-16. Commodore Darrius Sims got his team off to a great start in the game with a 95-yard kickoff return. Vandy next plays Tennessee State.

GEORGIA (4-2, 2-3 SEC): The head scratcher for Bulldog fans is they outgained Vandy, 421-171 and didn't have a turnover and lost. Georgia has an open date before the Cocktail Party in Jacksonville on Oct. 29.

FLORIDA (5-1, 3-1 SEC): AD Jeremy Foley got bullied into switching the LSU game to Baton Rouge, but it's his own fault. The Hurricane Matthew game should have been played last Sunday. After dispatching Missouri, the Gators have another open date before Georgia.

LSU (4-2, 2-1 SEC): Another game without Leonard Fournette and another win for interim HC Ed Orgeron. Derrius Guice carried 16 times for 162 yards and 2 TDs in a 45-10 rout of Southern Miss. Big game up next with Ole Miss coming to Baton Rouge and LSU is favored by 4.

AUBURN (4-2, 2-1 SEC): Don't sleep on Auburn. Gus Malzahn has his running game going and DC Kevin Steele has a very improved defense. Arkansas comes to Jordan-Hare Saturday and War Eagle is a 7.5 point pick.

Click to The Garza Law Firm
ARKANSAS (5-2, 1-2 SEC): Rawleigh Williams III ran for 180 yards and Austin Alley pitched three TDs as the Razorbacks got a huge home win over Ole Miss, 34-30.

OLE MISS (3-3, 1-2 SEC): The Rebs' season may go off the rails if they lose at LSU Saturday. Rumors persist that HC Hugh "Akeem" Freeze is going to get waylaid by the NCAA.

MISSISSIPPI STATE (2-4, 1-2 SEC) The Bullies fought gamely before losing in double overtime at BYU, 28-21. A win at Kentucky is vital if State has any chance of getting to a bowl game in the first year after the Dak Prescott era.

Throaty:

I'm feeling you but I'm not. Bottom line Saturday is you could assemble a staff of Jimmy Johnson, Barry Switzer, Bear Bryant, Nick Saban, Doug Dickey, Lame Kiffin and Pop Warner and give them Tennessee's team as it's currently comprised (with the injuries and all) at the back end of that emotionally grueling gauntlet and the results were pretty much going to be the same.

Look, I'm not thrilled with the constant misalignments on defense from Shoop's guys. Nor am I pleased with his finesse approach at times with his sets, but it wasn't mattering Saturday. In fact, I was encouraged that Tennessee actually hung in that game with so little offense. As for UT's offense, my own humble opinion (and this comes from no source...nobody...just what I saw Saturday...and I trust my gut somewhat) is that Tennessee determined pretty early in that game (around the time they lost 2 offensive lineman) that they had zero chance of winning that game and they weren't risking Josh Dobbs in an unwinnable situation. This was my first blush reaction on our Smartway/Garza Law Firm Fifth Quarter Fan Reaction and it remains my take after seeing the tape and having 36 hours to think about it.

Point is that IGYV is alive and well. And Tennessee's staff wanted it to remain alive and well coming out of that game. I honestly believe that. There was zero effort to turn Dobbs loose and Dobbs in the pocket is 30% of the player he truly is. It looked like App State all over again.

I kind of realized Friday when we reported first that Tennessee had more injuries heading into that game with Kirkland Jr. and Foreman that it was going to be a long day. At some point (as Beano eloquently pointed out upon my exclusive Friday reportage), excuses become reality. This team must now do everything in its power to get healthy. If that means hitting very little over the next couple of weeks, then so be it.

Other than correcting the formation issues on defense I'm not sure there's much to be gleaned from showing that team the tape of that game. It was a complete and total mismatch.

Believe it or not I'm mighty proud of my Volunteers in light of our 5-2 start. Our guys have overcome an awful lot to hopefully be in the conversation for SEC Title contention come November. I'm not going to overreact to a horrible day in Neyland Stadium versus a joyless semi professional team.

The one criticism I have coming out of Bama that is concerning is the lack of freshmen playing on a team that is beat all to hell on both sides of the football. You mean to tell me that Warrior can't get on that football field somehow? Also, Tyler Byrd is being wasted at WR on a team with serious back 7 issues. Hell, if you have to go dime for a preponderance of the time to get an athlete like that on the field then do it. It's also borderline criminal Jennings isn't playing both ways on a team that could seriously benefit from his skills. Plus he LOVE TO HIT PEOPLE. This staff is slow to believe in its own recruiting at times. This is certainly a fair criticism and is one that I share in light of Saturday.

Tony,

Tough weekend for the home team. That said, a welcome off week is on its way.

1. Tennessee is just too beaten up to compete with Alabama. Win the rest of them, get healthy, then see what happens in Atlanta.

2. Bob Shoop was in a terrible position Saturday. He came to a gun fight with a water pistol.

Click to Clancy's Tavern & Whiskey House!
3. Alabama looked the best they have all season. They were near perfect on offense.

4. It'll be interesting to see if the Tide can replicate that level next week. A&M has some weapons to make it a little less comfortable for them.

5. NC State missed a golden opportunity. Clemson appears to have a little magic dust sprinkled on them.

Click to TN Bank!
6. West Virginia is the only team in the Big 12 playing defense. That is why they are on top of the league.

7. Arkansas is underrated. The SEC West is just a nearly impossible gauntlet.

Click to 21st Mortgage!
8. Ohio State whistled past the graveyard. Wisconsin should have taken them out.

9. Arsenal has messed around and gotten themselves back in the race. It will be interesting to see if they can maintain.

Good news and bad news is delivered by Mid-State Heath out of the Bama Game in today's TOD (T Mail Of The Day).

Click to YMCA of East Tennessee!
'Tonah B:

Tennessee will likely be playing Alabama again. Many assume this scenario will play out. Because you have 2 to 4 stars going up against 4 to 5 stars, Tennessee better have an unorthodox scheme, and play to win next go around. (No gay field goal attempts like we did in 3rd quarter). Alabama is a superior team-a Russian machine. Tennessee will not win unless they play to win. This means four down play and airing it out at least 8 times for 40 plus yards. It means a couple of wrinkles and trick plays, and aggressive defensive scheme to hit their QB hard. Otherwise they will be smeared again.

MidState Heath'

Heath: Bama can be had but UT must get a whole lot healthier and they must begin playing some of the younger players on defense as well. As for the offensive approach. Josh Dobbs is a hole card that was not played in that game in any way shape or form in that game and Bama knows it.

Final Thought: Bama being THAT good can't be good for this league or college football. Enough is enough. I may even cheer for Urban Meyer versus them if it comes to that.

Final Thought II: Former Bama player and East Tennessee native Baron Huber told me randomly on Twitter (during our postgame show) I was better than complaining about the officiating in the aftermath of that game. Baron, with all due respect to you, I'm not better than that and BAMA gets ALL the IMPORTANT calls in EVERY GAME THAT MATTERS. Yawl went an entire season without a holding call. I love you, but get real man. As long as the $EC office remains in Birmingham, this league will remain Bama centric. And yes, this goes for the zebras as well. The SEC's Declaration of Independence would read "Of The Bammer, By The Bammer, and FOR THE BAMMER." That's a fact Jack (and Baron). And btw, Baron I wish you the best and continued success in all you do! Keep in touch!

Today on the Tony Basilio Show....Beano joins and we get into the latest on UT's injury situation as we have it. That could take a while.

We can now officially congratulate Caitlin Clark on breaking the record for the most points scored in women’s basketball!

Caitlin Clark is the biggest superstar in college basketball (men’s or women’s). That’s not just me being a fan, Caitlin Clark is HER! Caitlin scored 49 points on February 15th to pass Kelsey Plum’s NCAA record for the most career points in women’s college basketball..... [more]

Jared (the redneck from Roanoke, VA) thought the Taylor Swift coverage would end with the Super Bowl, but this love story isn’t going anywhere. In a game that was four hours and 18 minutes (that’s a total of 15,480 seconds). Swift only appeared for around 55 seconds! 55 SECONDS from the moment the game kicked off to the overtime touchdown.

Missouri Game Preview

by Josh
The Vols did what they were expected to do against UConn. There's not really much to say about that game. The game this Saturday in Columbia, Missouri will decide whether or not this season is a failure in my opinion. If they Vols lose, they are staring at 8-4 and probably the Gator Bowl. Maybe Reliaquest..... [more]

The Vols are coming back to Neyland Stadium and I am returning after a discretionary bye week. I'll be honest with you. This year it seems like I've been writing the same preview over and over because the formula to win has been the same pretty much every SEC game. I didn't want to sound like a broken record so I needed a bit of a break from that.

I'll start with some general observations..... [more]
