Let's start Thursday with a couple of items of business.
Firstly, we'll be celebrating the caller Roger's birthday today live at Noon at Smoothie King. I'm getting a cake, Coach Glanville will be there, the whole nine yards. We're really excited about it. If you feel like it, stop out and have a piece of cake and perhaps bring Roger something. He's such a wonderful guy to be around. Really inspirational. Roger has never had a bad day in his life.
Speaking of inspirational...The Fountain City Ramblers are undefeated playing on Thursday nights at Clancy's Tavern and Whiskey House downtown on Gay Street. We get underway down there tonight at 8p and will be hyping up UT/Bama. Start your UT football weekend off with us. It will blow your mind. Come in full voice as we will be playing Rocky Top as a radio family. Bammers are even semi-welcome.
Hope For Bama Game?
Cecil Hurt of Tiderinsider.com and Birmingham News joined yesterday and painted a picture of the Crimson Tide that are conquerable. Among the highlights of our conversation.
Bama isn't running anywhere near 100% of Lane Kiffin's offense this year.
Bama's passing offense is basically Hurts calling one play with a couple of options and if they aren't open, he's going to keep it and run with the ball. Most passing plays are one pattern. Very basic and simplified.
Hurts is still in the process of on the job training.
Does this rudimentary passing game catch up to Bama this weekend?
Bama only has one undefeated team since he's been in Tuscaloosa. That was in 2009. So, chances are that somebody is going to get them. Bottom line is that every season somebody has found a way to defeat Alabama.
Tennessee and Texas A&M have real chances of beating Bama this year.
Dobbs has proven he can make plays versus Bama. There will be plays to be made against the Tide. DeShaun Watson and Chad Kelly both hurt Bama with the deep throw. Can Tennessee do this Saturday? They will have opportunities to hit some big plays over the Tide.
Alabama's secondary isn't very good. Big plays can be had but they will put terrific pressure on Tennessee with their front four.
This Bama team doesn't compare to others in terms of discipline. They are only 25th in America in turnover margin. Amazing.
Reuben Foster is questionable. He left the Arkansas game after suffering a concussion. Foster is Bama's best LB by far.
Shane Taylor is also doubtful with a concussion.

It should be pointed out that 'X' will return tomorrow to Tonybasilio.com with a look at many of the stars, studs, and stallions that are expected to be on hand for the Bama game. Trey Smith, the #1 ranked player in America by several services will be here from West Tennessee, as will OL Jedrick Willis, running back Cam Akers, and a literal ton of players. Going to be an amazing scene if UT can grab a win.

No surprise on Preston Williams. He wanted his fifth star before he got here. Meanwhile he has made about 5 catches through 18 or so college football games. That guy just never bought in. What a mystery his entire Tennessee career/was has been. At the start of the season if I would've told you we'd be worried about Preston Williams leaving the team during Bama week you would've thought the season was going to hell. Instead no one is hardly batting an eye. Last night on MyVLT with Coach Glanville we had a young man on the show from Central High School. Before our segment, Coach G asked him how many questions he had this year, the kid replied 'I really don't know sir.' To which Jerry Glanville said 'I love you kid. I want players like you. Team first guys are ones you can win with.' Somehow Preston Williams apparently didn't learn this. What does it say about this kid that we would leave in the middle of what could be a national playoff type of season?
Williams’s decision comes on the heels of Tyler Byrd admitting that he would like a shot on defense. I maintain (along w Orange Throat) that Byrd would be a great DB as would Jajuan Jennings. In fact, I'd play Jennings both ways this weekend. If you had him back there every receiver in America would keep his head on 'swizzle' (thank you Buzz Peterson for 'swizzle').
WLynn Stat Of The Week:
The last time Tennessee hosted a top 10 team as a member of the top 10 was when Georgia visited Neyland Stadium back in 2005. Ironically this was also the last time Tennessee was truly a member of college football's elite. If you'll recall, Tennessee was thought to be a National Title contender back in 2005. Instead that Georgia game went south and the Vols never recovered. They went onto suffer their first of two losing seasons under Phillip Fulmer before he was terminated in 2008. Interestingly, Georgia served as a doorway for this year’s group to make UT/Bama one featuring two top 10 teams in Neyland Stadium. Welcome back Vols! Now, let's stick around at the top for a while. Whatta ya say???
Martellus Bennett on E 60 last night on former Vol Jason Witten. 'He never helped me when I was playing with the Cowboys. I would ask him questions and he would tell me to go figure it out on my own'. They show a part of feature called The Brother's Bennett. Martellus Bennett came off on that show like a real horse's ass.

'Tony:
Reading your blog about the high ratings for the UT games…..
So regardless of what happens with Fla/LSU, isn’t it in the conference’s best interests to have the Vols in the championship game, given the high TV ratings? Looks like, if Sankey was smart, he would want the draw of the Vols. That has to help us if it comes down to some fuzzy tiebreakers or back-door politics…..right??
KB, Nashville'
KB: That's a great point you bring up. It's all about eyeballs on TV's. The other consideration is that if Florida fluked into the SEC Title Game they would get flat out (and I mean flat out) murdered by Bama. I'm talking put an 'X' on the screen like when the Wolfman would eat his opponent in the ole WWWF. I'm talking carnage. I'm talking ugliness and pestilence. I'm talking about a crushing. Here's the bottom line...Florida is the shizzling drits and they might just luck and duck into the SEC Title game. As my radio partner Beano said about Florida, 'They better be careful what they wish for because they might just get it. And in the process we'd all turn into Bama fans for a day.' Word up.
Tomorrow....Throaty gets wholly. 'X' Commeth....Jerry Colquitt's Film Study...
Today on the Tony Basilio Show....Come to Roger's Birthday Bash at Smoothie King along with...
Today on the show we'll visit with Mike Huguenin of Gridironnow.com, along with Jerry Colquitt and Coach Jerry Glanville.
Peace
Tony
