We start today with some concerning developments on the AD search. Let's get a couple of things straight before I get into reporting what I've learned.
Firstly, I'm always going to call it like I see it here no matter the cost. I take my responsibility of doing and saying what I think is proper for this sporting community seriously. I'm about to speak to truth to power today in this column and will encourage you to do the same.
Secondly, much of the reporting we do here on the AD search has been brought to you in real time. Everything I touch on here is subject to change. This is a fluid situation and will continue to be one until an AD is hired.
We opined here several weeks ago that the Tennessee AD job calls for a Tennessee man at this point in time. I realize this is seen as passé by some readers of this blog and that's okay. Bottom line is we don't need no more damn Bammers at the helm of the UT athletics department.
This brings me to the developments of the past couple of weeks. It seems that a gathering storm of support has refocused on Bama Jon Gilbert for the UT AD job. I realize this is absurd and will come as hard to believe for some, but the fact is that Rick Barnes has done a nice sales job on this one internally. I wish he recruited with this much aplomb. Fact is that Gilbert reluctantly let it be known during Barnes initial canvassing on his behalf several weeks back that he really wasn't interested in the job. Well, that has changed. And the change has come in the past 10 days.
I'm told a few powerful boosters are now on the side of anointing Gilbert as the next AD at UT. What's troubling is that there's an illogical school of thought among many power players internally that Tennessee doesn't need Tennessee people in high level administrative jobs. Whereas David Blackburn's ties to the school would be seen as a plus at a provincial place like Alabama, this may just be working against him at Tennessee. No. I'm not making this up.
I'm putting these developments out before thousands today because I want those with the money and power to really think before they act on this one. I want you to get involved and make your voice heard. We don't need another Bammer here. I do believe Gilbert is a decent fellow, but I'll remind you that he's the same guy that hired Donnie Tyndall when he had a choice of a world full of hoops coaches. That hiring process was mostly his baby and the results were catastrophic. Tyndall begot Barnes who is leading UT off the cliff. Bammers Dave and Jon started the hoops program rolling off the cliff. Meanwhile David Blackburn has hired championship and hall of fame level coaches at Chattanooga. It's like the choice between life and death.
Again, Blackburn's Tennessee ties seem to be working against him while Gilbert's lack of UT affiliation is thought to be a plus by several in the power/booster base. Some who were squarely in Blackburn's court several weeks back are now thought to be vacillating and open to listening on the Gilbert for AD movement. I don't get it.
I'm here to tell you that you must make your voice heard. Call the shows. Hit the boards. Send e-mails to your local paper. Tell UT board members that you know or power players in your life that they can't hire this Bammer. Let's do the right thing and either bring Blackburn home or hire a UT guy.
I do believe this is a two horse race (Gilbert & Blackburn) at this point in time but that too could change. Joe DiPietro said that he would like to hire a chancellor before an Athletic Director. It stands to reason that the new chancellor could have somebody else he wants to pull in as the new AD. Stay tuned.
The point of all this today is that Tennessee has a guy sitting in Chattanooga that would be an absolutely PERFECT HIRE! He's paid his dues. He would be a uniter instead of a divider like these Bammers. He understands the Tennessee culture. He will be apt to work with the Lady Vols and restore their dignity. He would help shepherd Butch Jones to the next level while putting his foot squarely up Rick Barnes' backside.
I've always admired the ability of the folks in charge around here to constantly screw up two car funerals. This could be another in a long line of self-inflicted wounds.
My hope is that by exposing these developments we would aid in keeping our university from failing to hire one of our own for a damn Bammer.
If you feel the need, get involved. If not thanks for reading.

Tony,
Vol Country is still basking in the afterglow of the comeback win over Florida. The Big Orange now moves forward in pursuit of bigger goals.
1. The biggest challenge Tennessee faces this weekend is refocusing their efforts after a great second half effort that ended over a decade of frustration. It certainly helps that the next opponent is Georgia.
2. A Tennessee win on Saturday would effectively clinch the SEC East. The Vols would hold the tiebreaker over Florida and have a de facto 3 game lead over Georgia.
3. It will be fascinating to see how LSU reacts to Ed Orgeron as their interim coach. If it is anything like what happened when he took the same post at USC, the Tigers will be a load for anyone they play down the stretch.
4. Stanford and Washington face off in a matchup with potential College Football Playoff ramifications Friday night. The winner can realistically see themselves in that group of four.
5. Michigan and Wisconsin meet in a game that will help shape the picture in the Big 10. The Badgers have a chance to wipe out both contenders from the home state of Motown in a two week period.
6. Oklahoma has one last chance to resurrect their season at TCU on Saturday. A loss and I believe you can put the Sooners down for 7-5.
7. Louisville now takes its act on the road in prime time. Clemson will have to be much better than they have at any point previously this season to derail the Cardinals.
8. Dee Gordon homering while honoring José Fernández is the kind of moment sport so often gives us. It is still the best reality show on television.
9. It appears that Chris Bosh will never play in the NBA again. That is sad, but his long term health has to be the deciding factor in this case.
Sapphire has another great small batch punch this week you'll want to try while supplies last. The Jack and Jill contains homemade infused vanilla bean bourbon, black tea, a splash of homemade limoncello, and burnt lemon juice.

'Saturday’s game against Florida invites comparison to 1995.
In both games, the road team came in and played outstanding football in the first half, then collapsed in the second half as the home team roared back to a blowout win.
In 1995, it was Florida scoring 48 unanswered points. They did it again in 1996 with 35 unanswered to start that game-holding on for a 35-29 win. With their performance in 1995 and the follow up in 1996, Florida literally flipped the entire series. From that point on, almost every year, Tennessee would make some bad mistake, compound that with something worse and it would be Groundhog Day again. Florida started a new chapter in 1995 and they wrote it for 20 years while Tennessee largely sat idle.
Tennessee did the same thing to Florida Saturday. They now have the opportunity to close that chapter once and for all, to write the next chapter, and to flip this series.
It won’t be easier to beat Florida next year. It will likely be harder. Florida will put more effort into winning this game next year. It will take the full 60 minutes of effort like this to beat Florida. And most years, this is the bare minimum that is required to have a chance at those guys. However, when Tennessee puts that kind of effort on the field consistently, I think they’ll find themselves with not just a chance to win, but a chance to absolutely run away with the game (such as happened this year). When the dam breaks, it gets worse in one big hurry.
The opportunity is right here in front of us. Consider:
· Florida State is very strong and they aren’t going anywhere.
· Mark Richt is going to win at Miami-maybe sooner rather than later.
· Jeremy Foley is stepping down and ….some guy from Mississippi State is replacing him. I think he hired Dan Mullen. Woo.
· McElwain was perfectly happy letting his players run their mouths this year. I wonder how much control he has. Really.
Georgia:
Tennessee should be able to get a win at Georgia. Doing so means that really, they only need to split between A&M and Alabama to win the East. There simply isn’t anybody left in the East that can pass the laugh test to challenge Tennessee other than Missouri-who already has one conference loss, still has to face Florida in The Swamp, as well as Arkansas to close the season. Beat Georgia. March to Atlanta. Win the SEC.
Only mildly related,
I live down here in Georgia and wore the brightest orange Tennessee golf shirt I have to the new job I started on Monday. New bossman says, “That’s a pretty bold statement on Day 1.” “It’s impossible to be subtle when you’re wearing Tennessee orange.”, I told him. Here’s to wearing it again next Monday.

Eric: I'm still trying to process exactly what we saw on Saturday in Neyland Stadium. I'm on tonight with Tony Robinson 10-10:30pm and Jerry Glanville 10:30-11:00pm on MyVLT. I can't wait to discuss what those guys saw that Tennessee did that took Florida's deep passing game away from them. I've never seen an opposing team bail so profusely on the deep ball when it was obviously working. I wonder if Bob Shoop did something inside the X's and O's or if Florida just thought they had the game in the bag. It's still quite hard to believe.
Mike Detillier joined me yesterday on the show and shared that short list at LSU consists of the following 3 guys.
Tom Herman: Houston
Bobby Petrino: Louisville
David Shaw: Stanford
Of those 3 guys the one that would scare me the most from an SEC standpoint is Tom Herman. I think he's special, has a tremendous personality, and will recruit like a mad man there. He would effectively pull guys out of Texas with his Houston ties.
Petrino would be interesting at LSU because he would give that fan base the wide open style they crave. But could he behave there? Does he have the energy to compete in this league at this stage?
David Shaw is an NFL head coach in the making. His father was an NFL head coach and has encouraged his son to say in the college ranks. Shaw might be the most underrated coach in college football. He would be very interesting at Baton Rouge.

Just listening to Monday's archive and John in Gainesville had a great point on the donations, or tips if you want to look at it that way. The post game show has been great therapy for me over the last year or so, especially after a loss. I would gladly make a donation to you to help keep it going. Either send me a PayPal account or put a link on your site and I'll gladly contribute.
Thanks
Dale, Nashville'
It's funny John in Gainesville mentioned this because we've taken a beating expense wise in 2016. Yesterday is a great example. We're on the air doing our thing and gremlins got into our equipment. My engineer came out last night for a visit that wasn't cheap. Therefore I'm strongly considering experimenting with some sort of PayPal tip jar this weekend. I really am humbled by the interest my listeners/readers have in the welfare/viability of what we do. I really am touched by your bringing this up.
'Tony:
I realize Tennessee has had a great, great weekend, but I still think at least a note should be made about my hero since I was 13 yrs old in 1960.He is the most important golfer ever. just ask Rory McIlroy 11.5 million on the day he died. Palmer saved the British Open, cofounded the golf channel, main reason there is a senior children tour, founded and maintained 2 world renown children hospitals, and was loved by everyone. Goodbye to the King...

I love Arnold Palmer. Always have. Always will. He literally changed the business of sports overnight with his association with Mark McCormick. I just read an awesome book on all this called Players by Mathew Futterman. In fact we will be featuring Mathew on an upcoming Book Corner interview.
Kneeling for the anthem isn't going to fly in the heartland in college football. Tennessee hasn't had to deal with this yet.

You prognostication abilities are confirmed. Your oracular presence is steadfast. What can we say??? I bet those on your team just gaze at you in awe. They should.
But I have one bone to pick with you. That is the way you are getting victories you guarantee this year. I am an old guy and this not playing till the second half is hard on us oldsters.
I have decided to blame you so you best up your prophet game to include playing football in the first half...... No more excuses.
Couple of points for your thought.
1. This may be a team that becomes known for its second half actions. If it goes on to win any sort of championship then this tendency will become legendary. 1a. I plan to enjoy this team, if my heart lasts that is. Actually I already have enjoyed this bunch.
2. He may not be the best ever UT QB but when was the last time a QB was more enjoyable in his drive to win. Schuler maybe? Condredge?
3. We need to enjoy this team as groups like this are rare.
4. Folks in your job should love CBJ. He is, what, eccentric and that is simply your work being done for you. He provides material for free. Of course it will take some winning over time for CBJ to reach this status but would you rather have CBJ and his quirks or deadpan Saban?
With that, UGA is up. Enjoy the week to come.
Dean'
Dean: I agree. Butch's goofiness is amusing and harmless. Never a dull moment. As for this team, they are going to go down with the 1985 team as one that helped UT get back to glory. I really believe that. I don't think these guys are going to win a Natty anytime soon but I wouldn't sleep on them beating either Bama or A&M in a rematch in Atlanta. Put it this way, if they ever put 4 quarters together they are going to be tough to beat.
