I start today with a plea. If you haven't told at least 5 friends/acquaintances about this show this week, would you please consider doing it today? We really need your help in spreading the word on the great stuff going on around here! Huge week!!!

We started yesterday's 2nd hour with a terrific interview with Mike Carmin of the Lafayette Journal and Courier. We discussed Austin Appleby's time as a starter at Purdue. Basically Carmin pretty much guaranteed that Appleby was going to blink in Neyland Stadium on Saturday. In fact he was adamant that Appleby would turn it over in front of that hostile crowd. He said Appleby had a weak deep ball, threw few spirals, and had a penchant for untimely turnovers. After that conversation, there's no way in hell that Appleby QB's Florida to a win over the Vols. In fact, if he does, I might just have to find another line of work. Enough is enough.

Tennessee is 1-5 with Gameday here. That ends this weekend. Florida is 4-0. That ends this weekend.

How bad is the QB play in the SEC? Two starters this weekend (@LSU & Florida) played QB at Purdue.

'Tony, I have listened to you since the genesis of the coacho ocho days. I love your show and the book corner is naaaaxt level, but I digress... Ok. One thing I can count on is your show/words making me think. And this week, Gator week has my alleged mind turning. The more I hear and learn about Butch the more afraid I become. This guy has a complex that I don’t think he can get over. As you stated today on the show, THIS IS FLORIDA. We don’t need no Smokey grey. We don’t need no checkered Neyland. We need to come out ready to fight! It’s been 11 years of Flustercucks and enough is enough. and this coach is under the impression some sort of gimmick is gonna put us over the top..Please. I mean we have the third best rb duo in the league and this guy is running the flippin spread. The worst spread in the nation in my opinion.

I've never seen a coach seem to stubbornly not play to his team’s strengths. It’s ridiculous. He keeps adding people to the offense to not get them the ball. Meanwhile we have a secondary half full of kids that need to be backups. I would've loved to see Jennings at safety and, as I heard on your show, let Byrd play corner. But they're on the wr merry-go-round getting 20 touches a yr if they're lucky. It’s frustrating... Enough negativity. As you have stated I think we are destined to win the east and dammit its time. I wish you continued success and thank you for being the voice for the voiceless. May God continue to keep and bless you and your family. GBO

Brad'

Brad:

Thanks for being there. I feel you on Butch Jones. He's kind a maddening but I've decided for the most part not to let his goofiness affect my feelings toward him. This is about winning. Plus I think Butch Jones is a really great guy to people behind the scenes. I'm human and this matters to me. I'm cheering for him for this reason. Still, we don't need gimmicks for Florida. This is akin to Dolly Parton getting breast augmentation. This weekend we have eye black for the fans, plus checkerboard Neyland, plus Smoky Gray units plus ESPN Gameday. Is this enough?

BTW, Brad, you're right on Tyler Byrd!!! He's an absolute natural for the secondary. Why isn't Jennings at safety? Just a little bit. Saturday with that tomato can QB, is the type of game Jennings could make a huge play in on both sides of the ball. I just don't get it.

Tony,

It's Wednesday of Florida Week and the anxiety level for Vol Nation is at red line levels. It will be nearly unbearable by 3:30 Saturday.

1. Butch Jones may be the least self aware coach on the planet. He makes himself look paranoid to a Nixonian level by discussing keeping a journal of perceived media slights.

2. We will find out Saturday if Bob Shoop is able to mask deficiencies caused by injury losses. He'll need to do so to keep the secondary from becoming a turnstile.

Click to Clancy's Tavern & Whiskey House!
3. I'm not sure why Tennessee fans get so worked up over the verbal shots Florida takes at the Vols. That is simply standard operating procedure for some programs.

4. With Tyler Polley having committed to UCONN, Isaiah Stokes becomes a true priority recruit for Tennessee. They desperately need to sign Stokes and Victor Uyaelumno.

5. Mike Lonergan is the latest casualty of a changing sports culture. What was considered coaching 20 years ago is now labeled abuse.

Click to TN Bank!
6. Oregon State is quietly building a PAC 12 basketball contender. They are maximizing some fortuitous relationships.

7. Carson Wentz has acquitted himself very well out of the gate. It will be interesting to see what his production looks like against quality opponents.

Click to 21st Mortgage!
8. Hockey does a terrible job of selling its product. The World Cup of Hockey should be a showcase event for the sport.

9. Joey Votto is having fantastic season and nobody is noticing. Proof that if a tree falls in a 90 loss forest nobody will hear it.

Friday is day 540 for Rick Barnes. For day 600 we've got to do something special for Rick Barnes. Is Rick Barnes ever going to get a 4 star player? Is Rick Barnes going to survive 1,000 days without getting a top 100 player? Are you kidding me? Perhaps Isaiah Stokes will snap this streak but it looks like he's waiting till the Spring to decide. If this happens, is he doing this at the behest/suggestion of North Carolina. It was pretty naive to think that Tennessee was going to compete heads up with a Conn on a kid. Hell, our women can't even compete with Conn for recruits, how is Weekend at Bernsie’s? Poor guy just has no juice in his battery.

'Tony,

YHGTBSM you have got to be pooping me, he admitted to keeping a urinated off list?! What the What?

We talked about this…Butch having a sensitivity and I hated saying this during the SGLF show that he has a perceived weakness and will get all pissy pants if the media and Orange Nation blow him up and if he does not beat……NOPE. I am not going to say one more word about this for this week…hopefully this season b/c I truly believe we can (if Kelly & Tuttle plays the game of their lives) beat the Lizards and send those arrogant smack crap mouthing bunch of jerkweeds home with an L. Not going to lay turd on the floor of our kitchen this week, not now, not before the most important game since Fulmer’s last year. The only other thing I want to cover at a later date no matter the outcome of the game Saturday is this…what is CBJ doing lobbying so loudly for the AD slot? Why? What is his purpose…ultimately? With a guy at UTC who appears to be destined to drive this ship, someone needs to tell Butch to focus on one thing at a time right now…win the big game, win the East and until then….Shut it.

Beat the Lizards, go 4 AND ZERO!!!! Win then act like the undefeated SEC EAST BEAST we use to be. BE RELEVANT NOW!

Thanks for giving this fan the few minutes to express the UT Orange Love and the V4L TN FootVol fan’s frustration. Butch’s perceived thin skin, Cam, JRM, O line, etc) Saturday night. I listened to you and Russell and the excellent former Cinci sports reporter with the Rammers v Ole Piss volume muted. What a great way to spend Saturday night after a victory. Appreciate you and the never ending energy you donate to Vol fans.

I really hope Saturday night after watching the tape of the game…Daughters soccer tournament in Bowling Green will not end until 6ish that then I get to tune in and celebrate the end of the streak. Have a great rest of Victory Over Florida Week Tony.

Chuck:

Thanks for the kind words!! I love doing that Smartway/Garza Law Firm 5th Quarter...We have too much fun doing that with/for the living Vol fan.

When it comes to Butch Jones, he needs to throw the pedal to the metal if he gets the opportunity this weekend. I mean keep blitzing, keep running Dobbs, keep the full steam on. I want that Appleby kid to wish he was back in Iowa City facing college Jeff Fisher. He can't play. Florida has zero offense. Zero excuse for even entertaining losing this game.

'Tony:

To your blog from Tuesday.....Amen & Amen...the Big Orange should be the traditional Big Orange! The best "gimmick" should be to pop them in the mouth and keep hitting until the clock runs out!
GBO!

I hate to tell Butch Jones, but this place was plenty loud before he got here. These modern day coaches kill me with all this junk that just 'clutters up the game'. That's a Butch Jones saying. And all that stuff doesn't add a damn thing to a fan base that's plenty ready to stay in this one for the duration. It's up to Butch Jones and his staff to come with something that will keep his crowd in it.

If he thinks Saturday is about alternative uniforms and goofy 3rd down gimmicks, and in stadium color schemes, he's got another thing coming. We don't need ANY of that stuff this week. Leave the gimmicks for the Kentucky game in November. This Florida game should be about IGYV. It's called destiny. Period. End of sentence.

Kevin M, Nashville'

'Tony:

I want to tell people to relax, the sky isn't falling. The fact is this is Florida week and the entire fan base is on edge. Much like the streaks in the 80's and 90's vs. Bema, this streak has to end now. The negativity around the program right now is partly due to conservative "Live in your Fears" mentality of CBJ and partly just because of the streak. We all know what happens if we lose again, CBJ will lose the fans, lose the recruits and will ultimately lose his job. NO ONE wants to go thru that again and the angst of the fan base shows this.

Look, CBJ knows what’s at stake and whether we like his approach or not, everything we want as a fan base is right in front of us. We are 3-0 and if his conservative plan works, all will be forgiven. These guys aren't stupid, nor did they lose the playbook after the bowl game. I believe this is EXACTLY how CBJ planned it and right or wrong, everything is right in front of us.

Final Four

Five reasons why it ends now. 1.Dobbs will be allowed to run at will. CBJ knows saving Dobbs from injury is irrelevant if we lose this game 2.The playbook will be wide open (just look at last years FL game) We will see split backs, I formation, seam routes and deep balls. 3.Player execution and intensity will be better because for the first time this year they will be allowed to turn it loose. I think a lot of the team issues so far this season are because the players want to dominate and know they are being held back. 4.Defense-we saw a glimpse of the blitz package vs. Ohio Saturday and it was very effective. Just like the offense, the D has shown little if any of the schemes that Shoop is known for, Saturday vs. that o line, Katie bar the Door! 5.When Dobbs runs and we use the entire playbook, most of the O-line issues are nonexistent because of the uncertainty of knowing where the ball is going. They won’t be great, but they won’t have to be.

Not only do I think we beat both FL and GA, barring injury to Dobbs, I don't think either game is that close. Both QB's are tailor made "statues" that this Defense will sack and pressure a lot. Magic8Vol predicts: TN 42 FL 17

Tony when we win I want to let you know that I live in Powell and will personally pickup some Elidios for dinner, some Wings Express (which is awesome by the way) and pickup some of those 2 foot subs from Kenjo for late late night snacks along with a pot of coffee or energy drinks and be at your disposal for as I can hold out for a 7 to 7 all night celebration! I am completely serious so don't be shocked when I show up at the Ray Mears Studio!

Mike, Powell'

Mike!!! Love the sponsor mentions and the self-invite to RMS Saturday. Unfortunately there's barely enough room for the two semi normal hosts. I love your reasons for Tennessee victory. The bottom line is that it's just time. Florida shouldn't be able to do anything on offense. I'm counting on Appleby throwing it up early and often. UT's #'s are way off as far was interceptions go.

'I'd like the listener/reader to please identify with one of these. Which are you?

Nega-Vol vs. IGYV-Vol

Dobbs overthrew some wide open receivers.

Dobbs completed 70.4% a career high when 25+ attempts. And at least two perfect passes were dropped.

Receivers dropped balls.

Josh Malone has four TD's already. The most any receiver has had at TN under Jones was 5 for the entire season (Von Pearson)

Fumbled 5 times.

Recovered 10 fumbles in two games.

Offense is sputtering.

Scored on all 11 red zone trips in three games, 9 touchdown.

Our defense is decimated after a Pyrrhic victory.

Held Ohio to 88 yards rushing, fewest allowed by defense under Jones. Defense has allowed only seven plays of 20+ yards, best in the SEC.

Can Sutton out.

Baylen Buchanan stepped up with 5 tackles and a pass breakup.

Special teams atrocious.

Trevor Daniel's net average was higher than his regular average for two weeks in a row.

Miami smeared Appalachian State.

Virginia Tech smeared Boston College, last season’s national leader in total defense and yards per play allowed.

Lost three key starters.

Florida lost their QB.

Offensive line sucks.

Offensive line....OK they suck. NegaVol has a point. But at least TN is being very pro active/experimental, and Chance Hall will be back.

Not as good as we thought.

Not as bad as we think.

MidState Heath'

MidState Heath!!! I'll bet you can guess which category I fall into! That's some great work brudder....

Good news/Bad news.....Florida's defense has gaudy numbers but they're relatively untested. They've faced UMass, ranked 128th in total offense as well as North Texas who checks in a 119th in total offense. Let's not forget Kentucky who completely sucks at life is the other team that defense faced and I ask you what do really know about them? The bad news? Vols are ranked 101st in total offense.

Final Thought:

The last time Tennessee started a season 4-0 they beat Florida, Alabama, Georgia on the road and Texas A&M in Dallas. Will history repeat itself?

Missouri Game Preview

The Vols did what they were expected to do against UConn. There's not really much to say about that game. The game this Saturday in Columbia, Missouri will decide whether or not this season is a failure in my opinion. If they Vols lose, they are staring at 8-4 and probably the Gator Bowl. Maybe Reliaquest..... [more]

The Vols are coming back to Neyland Stadium and I am returning after a discretionary bye week. I'll be honest with you. This year it seems like I've been writing the same preview over and over because the formula to win has been the same pretty much every SEC game. I didn't want to sound like a broken record so I needed a bit of a break from that.

I'll start with some general observations..... [more]
