Orange Throat has a legion of fans...And why not? The guy flat out gets it done twice weekly right here! 'X'...Are you reading this...Please come home. Here's Orange Throat's Friday offering.

Orange Throat
'Tony B Nation:

Let's start out this Friday with a little clarification. Your correspondent is not a Negavol. We're ecstatic that our Vols are 2-0 and would be fine with one point wins the rest of the way. However, the goal this year is to win the SEC East and the games against Florida and Georgia are critical for that objective, so we're viewing the first two games and tomorrow through the lens of what does it mean for the Florida game next week. At Tony Basilio Inc., we unapologetically keep it real, no matter where the chips fall. You can have your intelligence insulted at other places but not here.<

LINEBACKER WOES: DC Bob Shoop is facing his first major starting position crisis with the injury of LB Darrin Kirkland, Jr. As Tony indicated yesterday, Kirkland's injury is not week to week, as our HC is pretending. (This is the same head coach that had QB Justin Worley dress out for the Alabama game, even though he was out for the season.) Kirkland has meaningful damage in the ankle and he almost certainly won't be back until November, if at all.

Former walk-on Colton Jumper will likely get the start tomorrow. Jumper is a great kid. The Chattanoogan loves playing for his state school and gives great effort. He was a good high school player at Baylor School and earned both of the stars awarded him by recruiting services. (Psst. Don't let Rick Barnes know we have a two star starting for us, so he won't start recruiting basketball players with that designation). Problem is, if you watched his game film last year against Oklahoma and Florida, you understand what a godsend Kirkland was a freshman. We agree with Tony and Sinco that it is absurd to say Jumper is playing because of political reasons. However, we don't think Jumper is an SEC linebacker. That doesn't mean he can't have some moments of success and doesn't mean we won't forever appreciate him.

OPTIONS ARE LIMITED: Jumper might be fine tomorrow but there are backup plans for the "Big Four" stretch that's about to begin with Florida next Saturday. The best two linebackers available right now are Jalen Reeves-Maybin and Cortez McDowell. JRM is an outstanding player, and McDowell showed promise in the App State game, but both are undersized for the inside spot and we're about to face some bruising inside running attacks. Kirkland was a great recruiting pickup for this position but other signees haven't worked out. Gavin Bryant isn't a great choice, freshman Daniel Bituli's body may have him putting his hand on the ground in the near future, and sorry, but stop asking about Dylan Bates until you see him actually out there doing something. The next man up after McDowell is probably Quart'e Sapp, a promising Georgian with a little more size.

Kirkland's injury is indeed troublesome but doesn't have to be fatal. The Vol defensive front is improving with the return of Shy Tuttle and Jonathan Kongbo has shaken off a slow start in camp and is starting to show he might be ready for prime time sooner rather than later. We're going to give Shoop and his assistants the benefit of the doubt until they prove otherwise. We should also note that Shoop's first team defense has not allowed a second half TD in the first two games.

WOE IS OUR OFFENSE: Unfortunately, we do not give OC Mike Debord and his colleagues the same benefit of the doubt. Don Mahoney's OL has been shockingly bad more often than not so far. LT Drew Richmond has been very shaky and would not be starting right now if RT Chance Hall was healthy and Brett Kendrick could be spared to replace him. LG Jashon Robertson, thought to be an All-SEC candidate preseason, has been mostly bad and C Coleman Thomas has struggled, presumably due to injuries. (Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how were the refreshments in the President's Box?) At least the sluggish-thinking Debord and Mahoney have finally figured out Jack Jones should be starting at RG. We think this unit could jell and be a strength down the road.

WIDE RECEIVER WHO? All the OL problems are at least partially responsible for UT's anemic passing game so far. The Vol offense is an embarrassing 111th in yards per game so far, and the passing attack is 118th. We're not seeing any fancy tweet graphics on those two stats. OUCH. For a change, we're no longer blaming the WRs for this. Josh Malone has been terrific on two deep balls. Preston Williams looked like a catch machine in the first half vs. App State, but Debord seems to have forgotten him since then. Josh Smith is a very nice player but doesn't get targeted much and is now nursing a couple of injuries, so look for freshman Tyler Byrd tomorrow. He's a great talent. Kamara is electric out of the backfield, as he showed on the score in the Virginia Tech game. Jauan Jennings looked positively beastly on his TD catch for the Vols' first TD Saturday night. In fact, Josh Dobbs completed only 10 passes at Bristol, but three went for TDs, so there is hope.

Tomorrow would be a good time to air it out and get all of these fine pass-catchers involved and light up the scoreboard and give Jalen Hurd a much-needed breather, but will it happen?

2017 SCHEDULE: Beano and Tony like to debate Tennessee's schedule from time to time. Because of the presence of Alabama as Tennessee's permanent SEC West opponent, the Vols continue to play the toughest SEC overall schedule among SEC East teams each year. We realize and appreciate the tradition of that rivalry but this puts us at a disadvantage in winning our division. Next season will be no different. Tennessee trades Texas A&M for LSU, which sets up what could be UT's most meaningful November game in some time. An argument could be made if we're going to be saddled with the West's best each year, we should get their historic worst as well, which would probably be Mississippi State.

A GOOD GIMMICK GAME: The purist side of Tony likes to make fun of the gimmick games and our Vols will certainly play one in our 2017 opener, a Labor Day Monday night match with Georgia Tech in Atlanta's new Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Should be a great showcase for new QB Jarrett Guarantano (yes, we're assuming that) and should invite comparisons to Condredge Holloway's debut against the Yellow Jackets in Atlanta in 1972.

FORECAST: Ohio is a scrappy little MAC team with a good dual threat QB in Floridian Greg Windham. Frank Solich is an outstanding coach who likes to run the football but there is no way the Bobcat defense should be able to hang with our athletes, especially in secondary matchups. An early Vol lead would put Ohio in an uncomfortable situation and a rout could ensue. We could see this game being closer than the 27-point spread but we think the Vol receivers are chomping at the bit to break out and Butch Jones (a receiver coach by trade) might want to get his passing game inside the top 100 teams in Division I. Vegas thinks this game checks in at 42-14 in favor of our Volunteers. We'll say it's a little more than that. Something like 49-13 in behalf of UT.

FOR AMUSEMENT ONLY: (5-2 vs. the spread) We'll take the Vols and lay the 27.5 points. The total on Vandy at Georgia Tech is 42.5, low for a college game but we'll still take the Under. The Texas Aggies are at Auburn tomorrow in a very interesting matchup. We still believe our preseason hunch that the Aggies are better than advertised so we'll take A&M and the 3.5 points in the "Hot Seat Bowl." We don't think Hakeem Freeze is going to make it three in a row over Saban but QB Chad Kelly might make enough plays to justify taking the Rebs and 10.5 points. The total on Georgia at Missouri has zoomed from 45 to 56. Ok, might be a sucker bet but we're taking the Under.

Throaty....To you I say #WMLLM. Say, know it and write it down. Don't pick on the kid because he's white and a little slow. I'm with Dr Sean Sinclair. It's not his fault he keeps beating out the rest of his scholarship teammates for playing time. This is an evaluation/player development issue at that position but it's not Jumper's fault. I wish yawl would leave him alone. Come to think about it, I wish Darrin Kirkland Jr was healthy and playing in the stretch ahead but I don't believe that's going to happen.

An underpublicized piece of Tennessee's participation in the Battle at Bristol is the spate of ankle injuries to UT's front line guys on that temporary artificial surface. Coincidence? I don't know, but certainly worth a mention. Kirkland, Josh Smith, Coleman Thomas (leaves that game with now 2 ankle injuries) and LaTroy Lewis all incurred ankle injuries in that game. If the absence of any of the above has anything to do with Tennessee faltering against Florida or beyond it's worth wondering about. Did Tech get any? I'm too lazy to look this up?

Gonna be absolutely smokin' hot tomorrow in Neyland Stadium. If you're coming in for the game, be prepared. It's been brutally hot heading into the 3rd week of September. Vols/Ohio will feel like they are at Florida field tomorrow with Temps expected to be 90 at kickoff and humid too. It's really been sweltering here. Be careful. Noon kickoff. Be really careful.

And BTW, Throaty, I'm with you on balancing out these schedules in the league. We need to adjust. We have easily the toughest schedule in the East. You're right on the money with this!!

It does look like the weather is going to break for the Florida game with temps only expected in the low 80's next week. Heat GO AWAY.

Why is Tennessee checkering Neyland against Florida? Why not do that for a game that needs a little bit of pop. The Florida game needs a win, not gimmicks...Am I just being an old fool when I say this or am I on the money. Do you like the idea of checkering Neyland in a series that's not even competitive.

Tennessee is also officially using Florida week as a vehicle to Back Pat. This can't happen enough as far as I'm concerned. Link

Tony,

This week is the calm before the epic storm in Knoxville. Across the nation, however, there are several games this weekend that could define the course of the season.

1. Tennessee is one win away from surviving the prelude to the four game gauntlet that will determine the fate of their season. I firmly believe we will see a far more focused team in orange next Saturday.

2. It would be nice to see the Vols get out of the gate fast tomorrow. The sooner they put Ohio away, the less their key players are exposed to the risk of injury.

Click to Clancy's Tavern & Whiskey House!
3. I'm sure Miami would not be heading to Boone for a game if Mark Richt had been in charge when Appalachian State was scheduled. That is an example of an administration scheduling a no win scenario for their team.

4. Florida State faces a serious challenge at Louisville. The Cardinals are perfectly capable of beating the Seminoles and throwing the ACC into chaos.

5. Alabama faces their recent tormentor in Oxford. I fully expect the Rebels to give the Tide all they want.

6. Ohio State faces one of the few roadblocks on their schedule in primetime at Oklahoma. The Sooners are desperate for a win to keep their playoff hopes alive.

7. USC is a program teetering on the verge of anarchy. Clay Helton has to assert some leadership immediately or this season goes into a death spiral for the Trojans.

8. It will be fascinating to see where the ACC and the state of North Carolina go from here. The conference has placed the ball squarely in the legislature's court.

9. The Bengals and Steelers renew their blood feud in Pittsburgh Sunday. Let the personal fouls and fines begin.

The Blankenship Field renovation project is on pace. Go to blankenshiplegacy.org to donate and help keep it on course.

If I could clone me (scary thought), I'd be in two places at the same time this weekend. Noon kickoff in Neyland Stadium will be fun but the place to be in our region (SEC games aside) will be Boone, NC. How many times do you think I've written this? How many times do you think a 2-0, undefeated and ranked Power 5 school has visited App State? That's history. And the tickets sold out there as soon as they went on sale. I won't be surprised if Mark Richt suffers a loss there. As Mike Huguenin said yesterday. 'Richt must've looked at that schedule when he first got that job and said "why me"? Can you imagine the Hurricanes under Jimmy Johnson or Butch Jones playing at App State? It shows you how far that program has fallen.' #Truth.

Great weekend of college football, App State/Miami notwithstanding. The SEC West has a really compelling trio of games matching 6 teams with aspirations of having loud seasons, while the stuff around the country is great too.

Last night Houston got things started up in Cincy. I would've paid to see that game.

South Carolina/East Carolina is a real chance for Will Mushchamp to fall to 1-2 early.

Florida State visits Louisville in a game in a battle of terrific college QB's. I wouldn't sleep on the Cardinals against a beat up FSU team in this one.

Also in the Noon window, Temple could deal a real death blow to James Franklin at Penn State.

3:30 window features Hakeem Freeze's last stand. Can the modern day Bobby Bowden make it 3 in a row against Bama and Saban?

Michigan State vs. Notre Dame could see Irish fall to 1-2 early.

Ohio State @ Oklahoma is terrific for the game of college football. Kudos to Ohio State for making this game happen.

All kinds of great stuff this weekend in college football. Here's a link to some live odds. Link

It's tough sledding for Penn State fans. They're trying to forget the whole Sandusky deal while honoring Joe Pa's 50th anniversary of his first game there as head coach Saturday. Meanwhile opponents won't let PSU forget. Pitt fans wore 'JoePa Knew' T-shirts last week while Temple students are expected to follow suit this weekend. Link

Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease outbreak at FSU. This is no laughing matter. Link

Isaiah Stokes among a couple of four star players visiting Knoxville this weekend. Stokes seems down to Iowa State and Tennessee. It would be nice to get him.

2019 Four Star PG Ashton Hagans will also be on campus this weekend.

We can now officially congratulate Caitlin Clark on breaking the record for the most points scored in women’s basketball!

Caitlin Clark is the biggest superstar in college basketball (men’s or women’s). That’s not just me being a fan, Caitlin Clark is HER! Caitlin scored 49 points on February 15th to pass Kelsey Plum’s NCAA record for the most career points in women’s college basketball..... [more]
It's a Love Story

Jared (the redneck from Roanoke, VA) thought the Taylor Swift coverage would end with the Super Bowl, but this love story isn’t going anywhere. In a game that was four hours and 18 minutes (that’s a total of 15,480 seconds). Swift only appeared for around 55 seconds! 55 SECONDS from the moment the game kicked off to the overtime touchdown.

Missouri Game Preview

The Vols did what they were expected to do against UConn. There's not really much to say about that game. The game this Saturday in Columbia, Missouri will decide whether or not this season is a failure in my opinion. If they Vols lose, they are staring at 8-4 and probably the Gator Bowl. Maybe Reliaquest..... [more]

The Vols are coming back to Neyland Stadium and I am returning after a discretionary bye week. I'll be honest with you. This year it seems like I've been writing the same preview over and over because the formula to win has been the same pretty much every SEC game. I didn't want to sound like a broken record so I needed a bit of a break from that.

I'll start with some general observations..... [more]
