Vol Colonel has your floor first, factual and furiously today. This begins year 6 for your Vol Colonel as a senior contributor here at Tonybasilio.com!!

Welcome to another college football season Colonel!!!

Vol Colonel
It's game week! We're just two days out from opening up the 2016 season in front of 102,455 orange clad crazies in Neyland Stadium. Ladies and Gentlemen, It's Football Time in Tennessee!!!

Off the top this week I want to say a special thank you to all of you great folks who support and listen to The Tony Basilio Show and read this great blog every weekday. This marks my 6th year as a contributor to this wonderful blog which has really evolved into a great online sports section for all Tennessee Volunteer fans as well as sports fans in general. I am more than honored to work along side Tony and all of these great contributors as we continue to strive to bring you the best coverage of Tennessee Athletics, inside and out, that you will find anywhere and it doesn't cost you a dime! My hat is off to all of you! Now lets break some bread and get down to it!

The Volunteers are poised to make some noise in 2016. Coach Butch Jones has the cupboard stocked entering his 4th season at the helm here in Knoxville and the excitement in and around the program is as high as we've seen it in well over a decade.

This week I'm going to lay out 6 reasons (in no order) as to why I think this Tennessee team will win the East and have a chance to win a conference championship and quite possibly earn a playoff spot. Marcos Garza has your six and so does your old Vol Colonel!

SCHEDULE - This Volunteer football team will play 9 games inside the state of Tennessee including our two biggest rivals (UF & Bama) inside the friendly confines of Neyland Stadium. Control our border!

Click to YMCA of East Tennessee!
SUPERIOR QB PLAY - On paper Tennessee will have the superior QB starting in Joshua Dobbs over every team on the schedule. Some folks may knock Josh because it is assumed he isn't the greatest passing QB to ever suit it up for the Volunteers, but make no mistake, Josh is the engine that makes this team go. There's a reason Josh is listed as one of the Heisman favorites by the oddsmakers in Vegas. Simply put, this kid is dynamic on and off the field!

RUSHING ATTACK - Team 120 might just have the greatest rushing attack in school history. Our ground game is the bread and butter of this offense. I dare say there's not a team in this country that I would trade places with as far as our backfield and ground game goes. QB Josh Dobbs, RB's Jalen Hurd, Alvin Kamara, & John Kelly are the most dynamic set of rushers on any team in the nation, in my estimation. Last year these guys rushed for over 2,900 yards. Even with a little more emphasis on the passing game this season, there's no doubt in my mind that these guys can break the 3,000 yard mark on the ground. Jalen Hurd is a beast and is also listed on the big board of Heisman favorites out in Vegas this year. Kamara is a dynamic back in his own right and John Kelly has improved his game by leaps and bounds this offseason. Dobbs will cause opposing defensive coordinator's tons of headaches with the things he can do with his legs and feet. This is going to be fun to watch!

DEFENSIVE ENDS - Derek Barnett leads the way for this group and has 1st team All-American capabilities. A lot of folks are enamored with those twin terrors out at Texas A&M as far as DE's go, but with Barnett, Corey Vereen, LaTroy Lewis and newcomer Jonathan Kongbo, and Kyle Phillips, make no mistake, Tennessee has the horses to annihilate other teams QB's. This is the deepest set of defensive ends we've seen around here in over two decades in my opinion. New Vols DC Bob Shoop is going to let these guys loose and they are going to wreak some havoc, you can take that to the bank!

SECONDARY - as with our DE's, this is one of the deepest units we've seen around here in a long, long, time. Cameron Sutton is one of the finest corners we've ever had around here. He's a staple of consistency and he can lock his man down. Justin Martin has 1st round NFL talent written all over him and he finds himself in a back-up role to Emmanuel Moseley. Todd Kelly Jr. is poised to have a big season at Safety and is a fan favorite. Micah Abernathy has had a great camp and has locked down a starting spot and then you have Evan Berry and Stephen Griffin who will rotate in and out, not to mention Nigel Warrior who is a star in the making and is going to see significant playing time. Over at Nickel, Rashaan Gaulden will make some noise this season and Malik Foreman is going to see a lot of action too. Bob Shoop has worked a lot with these safeties this summer and these guys have a chance to not only be a great last line of defense, but these kids will knock your block off. You have so many guys back there in the secondary who can play multiple spots, this is going to one deep and very talented unit!

SPECIAL TEAMS - Aaron Medley has quietly had a great offseason and has been booming it through the uprights and Trevor Daniel who was a huge surprise last season, looks to be one of the finest punters we've had around here since we last seen a Colquitt manning the position. Evan Berry is a 1st team All-American kick returner who can take it to the house any time he touches the ball and Cam Sutton is certainly a threat at returning punts. Alvin Kamara is another vital cog back there who will be with Berry on kickoffs and will also back-up Sutton some on punt returns. Butch Jones puts a big emphasis on special teams, the most we've seen around here since Coach Majors was at the helm. This is an absolute strength for this football team and you can bet your bippy somewhere along the way it will be our special teams that will win us a close ball game!

There it is folks, there's six good reasons as to why I think this Tennessee team is going to do big things in 2016.

Just two more days until we kick it off under the lights in Neyland Stadium vs Appalachian State. I fully expect this Volunteer team to win the SEC East and to have a great shot at winning the whole SEC and quite possibly finding ourselves in the playoff picture at seasons end. That streak to Florida is going to end this year and Big Bad Alabama better watch out as they will be walking into a hornets nest in Neyland come October!

Thanks again to all of you for supporting what we do here at Tony's site and thank you for 6 great years of getting to talk to you folks every week. It's a true labor of love!

Have a Great Day and Go Big Orange!

With the season two days away, Beano hit the nail on the head about this season. I started yesterday telling Beano that I'm pensive for the start of this campaign and he retorted with 'isn't nice to have the feeling that we could actually have something to lose and something to play for.' In other words, it's fun that 2016 is going to be a year of consequence. Whether it's a boom or bust year here, it's going to be really interesting. As a sports fan, it doesn't get any better than this. I'm really excited to see how this group responds to the expectations.

Courtesy of Marcos Garza and The Garza Law Firm, I've got 4 tickets to Thursday's season opener that we will give away today at Wings Xpress. Come out and eat some lunch and talk some sports. Somebody is going to win those tickets!!! And they are SWEET seats!!!

Tonight I'll be live with Fountain City Ramblers playing some fun music at Clancy's on Gay Street. David and Lance are really great players and we have a super time. Plus that's a sweet place with a great vibe. I hope you can make it!

I'm so glad 3rd Down For What is going way....I'll say this about Butch Jones...I think he has great timing. I've noticed less sloganeering from him recently. Perhaps he's thinking his program doesn't need this extra panache now that it's winning time. When you're trying to get on your feet you need games and gimmicks. When you have a team like this you just need to shepherd them to Atlanta. As for 3rd Down For What...I think it ran its course. Then again I'm admittedly not in the demo.

Really excited about Wednesday night's In The Pocket Show on MyVlt. We're going to have Kippy Brown on with us. Kippy is so impressive. What a blessing to land a guy like that. Tony Robinson has this special quality about him that whoever he asks makes the time for him to appear on that show. Tony is really infectious. I feel so blessed to be around him!

BTW, next Wednesday at 10:30 PM we will have our inaugural edition of the Jerry Glanville Show. You don't think that will be off the hook, now do you? Jerry is an amazing guy. And boy, what a character.

I'm starting to think App State is the perfect opponent for Tennessee. They're not good enough to beat the Vols but they are going to be enough to give UT's players and coaches a decent measuring stick on where they are coming into the season. App State beat writer Steve Behr from the Wautaga Democrat joined to discuss the Mountaineers. Here's what we learned about the guys from Boone coming into Thursday.

Click to The Garza Law Firm
#11 Taylor Lamb is a fine QB. He usually doesn't hurt himself or his team. He's a very good passer that's started for close to two seasons. He did suffer one of his worst games last year at Clemson when he threw 2 ill advised passes helping the Tigers route App State. Will the same happen under the bright lights Thursday in Neyland?

App State lost 3 of their top 4 WR's from 2015 but bring back some talent in that group. Watch #6 Shaeden Meadors (6-2, 185 Jr), Byrnes SC. This guy can get behind DB's. He can fly. It will be telling if he can make some plays.

#4 Jaylen Barbour: Got hurt in the 3rd game of the season last year is somebody App State likes.

#85 Barrett Burns is quite a weapon at TE. He should figure nicely in their passing game on Thursday.

#15 Mock Adams is a redshirt freshman with speed to burn. Plus he's 6-4. Only 200 pounds, but he's 6-4 and that's saying something.

App State doesn't have enough pass rush from their ends to truly test Tennessee's inexperienced Drew Richmond. App State will probably use LB's and DB's to confuse Richmond but this really shouldn't be much of an issue.

Latrelle Gibbs, the best cover corner (7 Int's in 2015) is suspended for academic reasons for this game.

Beano brought up a wonderful point on air yesterday. This may be the second straight year Tennessee faces the most capable passing QB they will see for the entire season in a 'buy' game. Can you imagine that?

I saw where Cooper Mays was offered by Tennessee yesterday. The Mays are quickly becoming the first family of Tennessee football. Kevin was one of the meanest, nastiest and best representatives of this school ever. Just a great guy. So thrilled for him and Melinda. BTW, her brother Michael played for the Vols as well. They are racking up the lettermen in that family indeed. Cooper is only a freshmen so he must be some talent to garner an offer this soon.

Saw where Marquez North was cut yesterday by the Rams. Getting cut at this point is a kin to not even coming close to making a roster. He's 25 cuts away from a roster spot, give or take a few #'s. Tough blow.

You go Mitchell Myers. Link

Florida has two QB's...So, they have none. Link

Nick Saban's Nearly Human 2016 Tour continues. The man is one of us! Do you believe that. Me neither....Link

Torrance Gibson looked so great on paper. Looked. Link

Dennis Dodd with some great stuff here. Link

Bet you this will be a fun read. Link

Georgia Tech/Boston College in IRELAND...Seems logical....Link

Bama is smashing USC Saturday, but who will start at QB for the Tide? Link

I love Sturgill Simpson. The man is pure country. He speaks the truth. Reminds me of a young Dwight Yoakam in this regard. Link

RIP Gene Wilder. What an American treasure. Link

Final Four

Friday night’s Iowa-UConn Final Four game had 14.2 million viewers. That’s more than any women’s college basketball game, ever. More than every 2023 NBA Finals game and more than every 2023 World Series game. ESPN has had the rights to NBA games since 2002. But the Final Four game between Iowa and UConn was the networks most-watched basketball game, men’s or women’s, pro or collegiate EVER.... [more]

Missouri Game Preview

The Vols did what they were expected to do against UConn. There's not really much to say about that game. The game this Saturday in Columbia, Missouri will decide whether or not this season is a failure in my opinion. If they Vols lose, they are staring at 8-4 and probably the Gator Bowl. Maybe Reliaquest..... [more]

The Vols are coming back to Neyland Stadium and I am returning after a discretionary bye week. I'll be honest with you. This year it seems like I've been writing the same preview over and over because the formula to win has been the same pretty much every SEC game. I didn't want to sound like a broken record so I needed a bit of a break from that.

I'll start with some general observations..... [more]
