Before I do anything else here today…I want to remind you that my guy Dewey Warren is returning to the Knoxville airwaves today. Hummin’ The Tater With Swamp Rat Dewey Warren debuts today from 3-4 Eastern time on 1180 AM WVLZ. The show will be heard Wednesdays and Thursdays throughout football season. The show is being billed as a celebration of the men that made Volunteer Football what it is today! I’m really excited about Dewey returning to the Knoxville airwaves. We’re all better for it!... You can listen by clicking here!!...Link

Spread the word for Dewey..He appreciates it!

Butch Jones had an interesting meeting with the depressed yesterday.

Here's my interpretation of a couple of nuggets.

Backup QB:
Dormady gets the nod as the initial backup QB. This makes sense as he both capable and experienced. What I'm not convinced of is that the Texan would get the call of Guarantano if, God forbid, Dobbs was to suffer an injury that required him missing several games. In this case I think you would eventually see Guarantano enter the starting picture as it would probably give the Vols the best chance to be successful long term. Let's hope we don't have to deal with this possibility. Along these lines it would be best for all concerned if Dobbs truly is better at passing in 2016 and relies more on his arm than his scrambling ability.

Huge week for our radio show next week. We're giving you several opportunities to interact with us.

Tony,

The countdown to kickoff has dwindled to eight days. We'll soon see if this UT team can meet its high expectations.

1. Looks like the Ohio football weekend will be huge for the basketball program. Isaiah Stokes and Tyler Polley are both expected in campus.

2. I'm intrigued to see what direction Butch Jones goes in regarding his backup quarterbacks. We'll soon see who the staff envisions as the future.

3. USC choosing to go with Max Browne at quarterback is no real surprise. They had to go with their most experienced option.

Click to Clancy's Tavern & Whiskey House!
4. The Aubrey Solomon saga shows how you never know what will trigger a recruit to change course. My guess is that Jim Harbaugh will now hire someone to be in charge of making sure mail goes to the proper recipient.

5. It sure seems like the Broncos are positioned to have a real hangover season. I'm not sure how they are going to produce points.

6. Being banned from the Paralympics is so Russia. Give them credit, they are consistent.

7. Ryan Lochte has essentially taught a graduate course in how to ruin your image. He would be wise to disappear for a long time.

8. The Royals are quietly trying to claw their way back into contention. I just don't know that their starting pitching is deep enough.

9. The WWE can't catch a break. Finn Balor's injury is just another in a long line of bad luck.

There are still a couple of spots left in our Fantasy Football Challenge. Email me at rkhatman@gmail.com if you are interested. The Blankenship Field renovation project is steaming ahead. Go to blankenshiplegacy.org to donate.

Rick Barnes is involved in a charity endeavor called Hoops for Hope. This is a wonderful thing. In fact, both the Ladies and Men on UT's campus got behind this and it's heartily commendable. Here's a link as we celebrate this. Link

Barnes does continue to attempt to rally support for Jon Gilbert to get the AD job at Tennessee. Will he succeed? I don't know, but if I'm him, I'm trying to focus on getting the Vols better. Butch Jones and his staff know the only way to do that is to recruit better players. Here's a short synopsis of why I don't believe Rick Barnes deserves any voice in who the next AD should be.

'Why Rick Barnes Shouldn't Get A Say:

Facts on 2016 SEC Basketball Recruiting Class (based on 247 sports rankings)

Tennessee's highest rated player in the 2016 class is 6-6 Jalen Johnson, ranked #150th as a three-star. 23 signees at 10 other SEC schools were ranked higher.

Kentucky, of course, signed five five-stars, ranked between sixth and 24th in the USA.

Bruce Pearl signed a five-star, 6-5 forward Mustapha Herron from Waterbury, CT, the #23rd ranked player in the country.

Ole Miss, Missouri and Arkansas did not sign a high school player ranked higher than Johnson, but Arkansas signed three of the top six juco players and Ole Miss signed the 19th and 25th-ranked jucos in the country.

Mississippi State HC Ben Howland, who came to Starkville the same time as Rick Barnes, signed six four-star players, ALL ranked ahead of Johnson.

Howland, you may remember, was available when UT hired Donnie Tyndall. That search was headed by UT AD candidate Jon Gilbert.

You posed the question about the Bama fan base, and how it would respond to a decade of decline. Let's go to the tape...

From 1997 to 2006, we endured 4 years of Dubose, 2 years of Fran, and 4 years of Shula. This decade included a major probation, 4 losing seasons, a 2-8 mark vs. UT & 3-7 vs. AU. It was LITERALLY the worst decade in Bama FB history.

In 2005, going into year 3 of Shula with no true end in sight to this misery, UA broke ground on the north end zone upper deck expansion, pushing us to 91k plus due to fan demand. Tide Pride remains the lone ticket booster organization in the SEC that maintains an annual rolling waiting list for membership. Over 8k names currently on it, waiting for the chance to buy seats.

There are myriad programs that fit your narrative...but
Bama ain't it. Enjoy the show almost daily on the app.
Keep it real and enjoy the new season.

RTR,
Steve, Birmingham'

To which I replied "not true." Yawl won an SEC Title in that span, didn't you. Come again Steve!'

To which he replied.

'2006-2015 UT
68-59
5 losing seasons
3 8-10 win seasons
1 trip to ATL

1997-2006 Bama
67-55
4 losing seasons
3 8-10 win seasons
THREE 4 or less win seasons
1 SEC title'

To Which I replied "Wow. Closer than I thought."

To which the caller WLynn ripped him and said, "Bama fans don't understand that around here we've had a lost decade and a half. It's been 15 years!"

To which Bama Steve replied.

"Tell w Lynn UT went 44-13 from 2001-2005, the previous 5 seasons he calls miserable. And I'll happily trade auburn for Vandy and Memphis, 1 for 2."

To which I replied, "Fun Stuff."

To which Steve replied, "Great show. This is why several of us listen down here. Better than the milquetoast bs. from local product to not piss off either side in this state. Thx for the entertainment. '

To which I replied '!!!!!'

You see we can even have fun with our Bama fan brethren. Even thought they have no idea what it's been like to walk in our wilderness for 15 years.

Great article on Alex Ellis who is attempting the make the Titans. I love this kid. What a heart. Link

Kentucky is soon to be in the Title IX soup. This is an odd read. Link

To anyone who saw the 30 for 30 on Doc and Darryl, this is no surprise. Doc Gooden is back on the stuff that killed Elvis. Really sad. Link

Final Thought....Rick Barnes + Dave Hart + Jon Gilbert = The Hart Foundation 2016 Edition..... Only difference is the original Hart Foundation won championships.....

Friday night’s Iowa-UConn Final Four game had 14.2 million viewers. That’s more than any women’s college basketball game, ever. Missouri Game Preview

The Vols did what they were expected to do against UConn. There's not really much to say about that game. The game this Saturday in Columbia, Missouri will decide whether or not this season is a failure in my opinion. If they Vols lose, they are staring at 8-4 and probably the Gator Bowl. Maybe Reliaquest..... [more]

The Vols are coming back to Neyland Stadium and I am returning after a discretionary bye week. I'll be honest with you. This year it seems like I've been writing the same preview over and over because the formula to win has been the same pretty much every SEC game. I didn't want to sound like a broken record so I needed a bit of a break from that.

I'll start with some general observations..... [more]
