Big News Today….Huge News…Today @ Noon…Live on the Tony Basilio Show…Beeeeee Theeeeeeerrrreeee.
Awesome stuff on the show yesterday. Great job by the callers! Amazing job really. The Twittiots even got into the act and we had a pretty fun show!
Fab Five Freddie led things off with some interesting numbers. Freddie tracked the past 50 years of SEC football dating back to the advent of the black athlete. When you look at SEC Football Championships won or shared by each school the #’s paint a picture of a Big 6 that are bunched together after #1.
School SEC Titles Won or Shared
Bama 17
Florida 8
Tennessee 7
Georgia 7
LSU 7
Auburn 7
Bottom line: The big 6 are the big 6. And yes…I feel better about choosing Tennessee at #2 yesterday because the Vols are #2 in the SEC behind Bama historically. Even with the long droughts of the past 50 years, Tennessee still holds up versus league brethren. Pretty impressive. As a final thought, isn’t it amazing how those teams are all bunched together. What do you make of this?
We also got into the Big 6 and their musical cousins. We explored the teams that matter in the SEC through classic country and classic rock. We also took a few jabs at some of lesser likes in the leagues as well. Never let a cheap shot go. That’s my living admonition around here.
Bama…Country Cousin…Hank Williams. He was first. He was best. He holds up over time. He’s tradition. He’s from Bama. He died in Tennessee. It’s all making sense to me.
Bama…Rock Cousin…The Beatles…They were first. They paved the way. They are an act that others are still judged against. Yeah. Bama makes me sick.
Bama Runner Up Rock Cousin….Skynyrd. The Southern Men represent the southern men. Deal with it.
LSU…Country Cousin..
Waylon Jennings…He’s cool. They’re cool. He’s classic. They’re classic. He had a great catalogue. They have crazy assed fans. It makes sense.
Rock Cousin….Grateful Dead. Are we talking LSU or LSD? Either way this works for me. They love to party. Games there have a pretty cool vibe. They celebrate like no other. They’re likeable. And btw, they play in Death Valley….Symmetry at its finest.
Tennessee:
Country Cousin…Johnny Cash…Classic and smooth…Amazing artist. Like Tennessee he stands the test of time. Cash is the king of cool. The Vols might just be the coolest team in the league. Whether it’s those uni’s or the tradition, Tennessee has it going on. BTW, Cash made music that mattered mixed with hit and miss material. He always bounced back after prolonged slumps.
Rock Cousin: Fleetwood Mac….They came ….they saw…They partied…they fought and they made some great music when everybody was pulling in the right direction. Some of their best moments came from the darkest times. The deep dark 70’s and fractured relationships begot Rumors, while Rumors of phone calls from Phillip Fulmer to the mid-state ultimately led to the glory run of the 90’s. Rumors….Rumors….I’m pretty proud of that.
Florida: Country Cousin. Kenny Chesney. Garth Brooks (Chris Gaines Lp) Billy Ray Cyrus.
It’s a mish mash repping the Gators. One country artist just wouldn’t do.
Chesney makes this list because he just had to put that damn Gator helmet on with Timmy Tebow back in the day. #pukeinmouth. Garth had that unfortunate alter where he looked like every other Florida fan. That is to say redder than a cedar stump (thank you Beano). Billy Ray Cyrus is such a red. Yeah. I hate Florida. They are the bro country of the SEC. Someday we’ll all look back on this and it will all seem funny.
Florida…Rock Cousin…Nickleback…..
Drop the damn mic!!
Florida…Pop Music Cousin….Backstreet Boys….Which one is Tebow? Which one is Urban?
Georgia…Country Cousin….Kenny Rogers….
Did some great work back in the 70’s through the mid 80’s only to reemerge and leave us with some lasting impressions of his augmented face. Georgia has had its moments. Kenny rode high back in the day. Georgia carried the banner back in the day for the SEC. Kenny was the face of country.
Georgia…Rock Cousin…Black Crowes….
Like Georgia football, the Crowes once had so much promise. Like the Dawgs, the Crowes always looked so great on paper. Then excesses and agendas took over. I once saw the Crowes live at the Tennessee Theater and the night was as melodic as a sonic jet. It’s a shame because these guys could’ve been the modern incarnation of the Rolling Stones. The Dawgs are the only team of the Big 6 to not win an Natty in the past 20 years. In fact, they haven’t even played for one. The Crowes looked like they were going to write their own ticket. So much promise. Don’t get me wrong….I think the Crowes are wonderful when the wanted/want to be. And yes…That’s the problem. Georgia is the almost program of the SEC like the Crowes are the almost great American band. Live with it.
Auburn: Country Cousin…Hank Jr….They’ve had a pretty good run at times but they can never escape the shadow of papa Bama. Meanwhile Hank Jr has had his moments and he’s great when he’s on. Then again he can be the absolute worst at times. Hank Jr has run hot and cold through the years like Auburn.
Auburn Rock and Roll Cousin….Rolling Stones. Stay with me here. Auburn can’t escape the shadows of Bama no matter how hard they try. They are tagged with the renegade program label even though their regal counterparts in Bama are the real outlaws. The Rolling Stones were tagged by the rock press of the 60’s as the bad boys even though they were innocent when compared to the hard partying, roughneck Beatles who truly were from the other side of the tracks. Mick Jagger is the son of educators. He was raised to be an attorney or doctor. Who knew he’d be having kids into his 80’s? Who knew Auburn would still be riding the roller coaster all these years later?
Other musical considerations….
Kentucky …Steven Tyler….Great rocker (hoops program) terrible country singer (football program). Take that Volcats…
Ole Miss….Pop Music Cousins….Milli Vanilli. Give that hardware back you fakers…
Hugh Freeze…Musical Cousins….Miami Sound Machine….Couldn’t you see a young Freeze with his hair down to his lyin’ ass with that Djembe drum and the beads.

Tony,
Another tragic and bizarre week here in America. Now more than ever, we need the distractions sports provide.
1. Wisconsin is a formidable opening opponent in Maui. They are, to be slightly optimistic, probably the best matchup for UT among the ranked teams in the field.
2. Tennessee needs to sign two quality post players in this recruiting cycle. Lance Thomas eliminating the Vols from consideration removes one good option.
3. Butch Jones and his staff are certainly addressing their needs across the defensive line. Depth on that unit is imperative for success in the SEC.
4. Nobody can doubt the work ethic of Josh Dobbs. His physical transformation since arriving on campus is a testament to time in the weight room.
5. Jim Harbaugh is just ahead of the game. His ability to keep Michigan in the college football headlines is uncanny.
6. It will be interesting to see how the Big 12 handles the Baylor situation. That certainly seems to be an issue above the pay grade of an athletic conference.
7. Cincinnati seems like the one near lock if the Big 12 expands. The other possible additions are less certain.
8. Kevin Durant admitting he never spoke to Russell Westbrook in his decision making process is odd. They must not be near as tight as they portrayed.
9. The WWE Draft was a generally a debacle. At least we get a Balor Club reunion.
I'm proud to announce that Blankenshiplegacy.org is on board here with us. It's a great project and I encourage everyone to give generously.

'Tony:
I'm a life-long (almost 56 years) Razorback fan, born and raised in central Arkansas but living in Memphis the past 10 years. We are season ticket holders and go to about 7-8 games a year. We bleed red.
While I want to take issue with your listing of the six teams that matter in the SEC, I do so knowing full well that your characterization of my Hogs is spot on.
First, about your list . . . it's probably accurate when you think historically and cut it off about fifteen years ago. But in today's SEC, things are fluid due to the constant coaching changes (with the lone, obvious exception of Saban and Alabama). I would argue that TODAY Arkansas, Ole Miss and maybe even Texas A&M matter as much as Auburn. In fact, from about 1960 forward, the historical relevancy and results of Arkansas and Tennessee are remarkably alike.
Each with a national championship, each with prolonged periods of solid play interrupted by the occasional dry spell. Yes, Arkansas took a few years to get a foothold in the SEC and endured the lean years of Danny Ford in the early to mid '90s, but otherwise we've been competitive and are on an upswing under Coach Bielema that virtually mirrors UT under Coach Jones. (And I won't remind you of what happened when we played in Knoxville last year.)
Nevertheless, I recognize Tennessee's place in SEC history and agree 100% that UT is an SEC team that really matters.
My other point of agreement with you is this: Arkansas is truly a team without a place. Set aside for a moment the fact that we switched conferences after decades of being one of the two dominant teams in the old SWC. Even then, we didn't have a true rival - a team with which there was a mutual hatred. We called Texas our rival and we did truly hate Texas - some of us old dogs still do - but we were only Texas' third most important game (A&M and Oklahoma being far more important to the Longhorns). Then we move to the SEC and who is our rival? Who really hates the Hogs and gears up weeks in advance to play us? No one. Everyone else has a heated rival except us. Sure, we're thought of as a solid program and I do think most other teams respect us. But we're an afterthought because we just don't have a true rival like everyone else has. It's frustrating for those of us who yearn to be nationally relevant.
So as much as I hated reading what you said, deep down inside I know it's true. Anyway, I read and enjoy your blog every day. Keep up the good work.
Jimmy in Memphis'
Jimmy: Awesome hearing from you! Thanks for not taking what I said about the Hogs personally. I LOVE Arkansas football from my youth. Those Broyles teams were amazing. Not to mention some of the great moments through the 70's and 80's. Bottom line is that yawl are displaced. And it sucks for your fan base. Every fan of any traditional power can feel the pain in your words. You guys have been in this league for 25 years and I still don't consider yawl an SEC team. Arkansas is a SWC team playing the SEC along with A&M. It's such a shame what they've done to college football in the spirit of progress.
