Apropos for Tennessee to lose like that last night to close their season. They fought hard as they did all year but the Vols did just enough bad stuff to lose. You just knew that when that Vol base runner was picked off in the top of the 9th with Tennessee leading 4-3 that Tennessee was going to lose. And lose they did. LSU's leadoff hitter smoked a 2-2 pitch out of the park to tie the game at 4. From there Tennessee was only able to record one out before LSU won on a bases loaded single. LSU was trying to gift the Vols a berth into the double elimination round as they started a kid that had worked less than 4 innings all year and followed him up with a couple of less than stellar arms. Tennessee couldn't take advantage and win the game despite flashing some pretty good defense.

The Vols had 3 put outs at home that were huge plays but they made mental mistakes when it counted most. A base runner can't be picked off like that in the 9th while a ball got by Tennessee's catcher that allowed the eventual winning run to reach 3rd with only one out in the 9th. When this happened you just knew it was curtains. If the curtain falls on Dave Serrano his epitaph should read. 'Serrano 2011-2106 Looked Great On Paper, Not On The Field.' The worst part about this is that Serrano is a really great guy. It's a shame his teams just perfected the art of the close loss. The ball is now in the hands of the unpredictable Dave Hart.

'Tony:

I heard your discussion on Vegas win totals for Tennessee for the upcoming season. That was some interesting stuff. Five dimes set the season total at # of wins for the Vols at 10.5. On the surface one would think the under is the way to bet this prop but if you look closer Five dimes was pretty bullish on the Vols going over 10.5. The juice on the over was 40 points or -140. That means to wager that the Vols will win 11 games or more next season you would have to risk $140 to win $100.

BTW, I really loved the old school wrasslin' segment with Mr. James. You should do more of that. It made me smile.

Trace: I was expecting the win total to be 9.5. At that # you would expect action on both sides. If Vegas is truly trying to encourage action going both ways, why would they set the vig so high? It just doesn't make sense. Are they trying to sucker huge Tennessee $$$ into playing that over. Is this a sucker bet akin to a high point spread in a mid-November conference game? Then again Vegas is asking $140 if you want to try and win $100. Amazing to consider how much they apparently like this team in 2016. I say apparently because with Vegas we've learned that everything is sleight of hand. Motive is always a mystery with those folks. Or should I say the only motive is $$$.

Question: Will you put up $140 to win $100 on Tennessee finishing with 11 or 12 wins in 2016? My answer is _____________.

'Tony:

I have read several places that this year will be the first Thursday night game in history for the Vols. I believe I attended a Thursday night game at Louisville September 5, 1991.

Really enjoy all the Vol information on your site.

Yes Mike you did attend a Thursday night game in Louisville. Andy Kelly hit Carl Pickens to begin the game and it was all over but the shouting from there. That game was played in an old minor league baseball stadium. I was reminiscing with Chris Burke about this game earlier in the week through text messages. Apparently that stadium was a real dump compared to the modern digs Louisville currently enjoys. If you remember, Louisville was riding high after trashing Alabama in a New Year's Day bowl game in 1991. They thought Tennessee was going to roll over for them on ESPN. It didn't work out that way. Arron Hayden and Little Man Stewart ran behind a stout Tennessee offensive line that broke the will of Howard Schnellenberger's Cardinals.

Tony,

The countdown to football drops below 100 days and the playoffs roll on for the NBA and NHL. A number of interesting topics have presented themselves this week.

1. Tennessee got a good draw in the SEC-Big 12 Challenge. Kansas State is likely to be picked 8th or 9th in their league.

2. The massive deal Under Armour signed with UCLA further lays waste to the ridiculous notion that college sports are anything other than big business. Just another way for coaches and administrators to feather their nests on the back of unpaid labor.

3. The findings of the Congressional committee looking into the NFL's handling of concussion issues should come as no surprise. Roger Goodell and company are far more concerned with revenue than player safety.

Click to Clancy's Tavern & Whiskey House!
4. Good move by Tom Brady. Anything that provides a headache for NFL management is something I heartily endorse.

5. The ACC-Big 10 Challenge is loaded with great matchups. That is how nonconference scheduling should work.

6. Kansas at Kentucky is a great showpiece for the SEC-Big 12 Challenge. Texas A&M at West Virginia also has serious potential.

7. Jeffrey Loria is the worst owner in sports history. His utter disdain for his customers is staggering.

8. Golden State now has their backs firmly against the wall. Cleveland will be in the same position if they don't protect home court tonight.

9. That was a fitting end to the season for Tennessee baseball. The bullpen committed arson all season.

Awesome show Tuesday with Beau James, the King of Kingsport!! My wife was with me as I listened and was even asking me rasslin' questions. (She grew up and went to school with the late, great Eddie Gilbert.) I couldn't order the book quick enough. Thanks for all you do!

I don't know if it was as influential in East Tennessee, but in Memphis professional wrestlers were on the forefront of the civil rights movement. The wrestlers convinced the promoters that they were missing half of the market and consequently much money. The wrestling fans were a true cross section of the population, years before desegregation. Look up Sputnik Monroe for some interesting stories.

As far as today's product, I enjoy New Japan "strong style." If you haven't seen it, it is on AXS TV on Friday nights and Jim Ross does the voice over play-by-play.

Thanks

MC in Mv'

MC: Great hearing from you. Call it what you will but I'm fascinated with old school wrasslin' because it truly mattered to the fabric of our society. Beau James was riveting in discussing the impact on East Tennessee on the entire world of wrestling as well as wrestling on East Tennessee. To think that on any Friday night 1/4 of the population of Knoxville was at a professional wrestling match is confounding. And I meet people every day that were moved by Ron & Don Wright and many of their contemporaries. It was real to me dammit.

BTW, if you want to check out Beau James' latest book, here's his web site. Really fun stuff here. Link

You think some stars of tomorrow are on display at the SEC Tournament?

ESPN's Keith Law has Florida's AJ Puk going #1 overall to the Phillies with Nick Senzel going 6th overall to Oakland. Hudson from Miss State is projected 10th to Chicago White Sox with Georgia's Tyler slotted to St Louis at 23rd. And what would the first round be without Vanderbilt as Sheffield is projected 34 to St Louis. Here's what I believe. Anybody St. Louis takes will be able to play. Anybody the Phillies take will have some sort of hidden malady like leg length discrepancy.

LSU. Are you buying or selling? Possibly 7 first round picks and lots of skeptics. Link

It's time for my producer Brian Hartman's turn as we go Through The Glass With Brian Hartman.

'I totally understand why many are opposed to the idea of Thursday night football at Neyland Stadium. The season opener vs Appalachian St has been moved from Saturday, Sept 3rd to Thursday, Sept 1. At the request of the SEC Network who will televise the 7:30 ET kickoff. I'm not one who minds the business decision made by the UTAD and the SEC brass. There are a bunch of other match ups on Sept 3rd that should be much more competitive that Tenn/Appy St will be. I am glad I'll be able to watch some of those now. If you like to count down days until kickoff, you can subtract 2 more days! I'm sure many of the players are happy about 2 less days of practice. They don't have to wait as long to hit someone with a different color of jersey on......

Click to The Garza Law Firm
Of course, there is another side to this. For those attending who have tickets and have to travel any distance, it sucks. All plans made now have to be rearranged. . And some may not get to come at all. Local businesses will take a severe hit with one less football Saturday on the calendar. Maybe moving it to Sunday would make more sense.. No matter if we like the move or not, out vote does not count. You do what TV tells you to do in the day and age where networks pay out millions of dollars for the right to televise these games we all love to watch and attend. So everyone must adjust. However that may be.

Is it just me, or has the hype and noise created by the Kentucky Derby, Preakness & Belmont Stakes been a little quieter this year? American Pharaoh winning the 1st Triple Crown in 37 yrs in 2015 may not have been good for the horse racing community long term. Short term it was great. In my uninformed opinion, I really believe interest is down. Many casual fans tuned in to watch year-after-year in hopes that they might see a horse win the Triple Crown. As each year passed without one, interest grew more and more. After American Pharoah's conquest, that's gone. For the immediate future. Just my 3 cents worth.

If you need me, you'll find me just a phone call way, Through The Glass.

Brian Hartman'

Brian: I'm with you. If you're going to move the game from Saturday, move it to Sunday PERMANANTLY. We missed our chance to do this. Mike Hamilton told me back in the day after 2004 that Tennessee caught a lot of flak from area churches for scheduling the game on Sunday Night. I believe the Sunday game should've been made our own tradition as part of Boomsday weekend. Of course Boomsday is now gone too so oh well.

Glad to see Josh Hart returning to Villanova for another season. That's good for college hoops.

Congrats Coach Cutcliffe. Link

Coming tomorrow: Inside Cape Neyland. How Tennessee fares against first year football coaches in the past quarter century.

Final Thought: OKC versus Toronto might put the NBA back to the future. The #'s will be so bad that games could end up back in tape delay beginning after your nightly news. This was the NBA of the late 70's. Truff. Personally I think it would be a great story but it would be a ratings nightmare if a Canadian team faced OKC.

The Vols did what they were expected to do against UConn. There's not really much to say about that game. The game this Saturday in Columbia, Missouri will decide whether or not this season is a failure in my opinion. If they Vols lose, they are staring at 8-4 and probably the Gator Bowl. Maybe Reliaquest..... [more]

The Vols are coming back to Neyland Stadium and I am returning after a discretionary bye week. I'll be honest with you. This year it seems like I've been writing the same preview over and over because the formula to win has been the same pretty much every SEC game. I didn't want to sound like a broken record so I needed a bit of a break from that.

I'll start with some general observations..... [more]
