Monday!!!
Posted: Mon, May 23rd, 2016, 6:13 PM • Permalink
Thanks to EVERYBODY that participated in WLynn's golf tourney over the weekend. That was a great time. After 3 games, Team Tony Basilio had four of our 12 players on the disabled list, but we had a great time. Tony Robinson was so much fun. Britney Hatcher was really fun! As was Phil! Roger got several at bats and the opposing teams were accommodating toward him as he got to feel like a champion in hitting several home runs. It was terrific fellowship. I loved every minute of it, though it was a tiring day.

Team Awards:
Manager of The Weekend: Me. I overachieved. You shoulda seen it.
Beano of the Weekend: Beano
Best Defensive Player: Randy Sharpe
Worst Defensive Player: Jeeker
Best Addition: Jeek Jr and Brendan Jarvis
Best Stories: Phil Hater
Highest Batting Average: Roger
Best Slugger: Loverboy Gary Fleenor
Best Comeback: Team TB Trailed 11-1 and won 13-12!
Tennessee Sports Medicine Update: 3 blown quads and an ankle injury.
No Guts No Glory Award: Coach Rash (great stories too)
Fan of the day: Mike Carver. Paid our team appearance fee and left mad at me over my tactics! Yass.
Belly of The Weekend: The guy in Rt Center in our final game was built like a semi pregnant chicken, but he could really play.

'Basilio Nation:

Random musings after a tough weekend for softball and a good one for baseball:

SOFTBALL SEASON ENDS: The Lady Vols lost 4-0 to Arizona after beating Marist on Saturday and had no margin for error yesterday, losing 4-3 in extra innings to the Wildcats in the double elimination NCAA Tournament in Knoxville. Thus, the Weekly’s will miss the Super Regional for the first time in five years and the World Series for only the second time in the last five.

BASEBALL STILL ALIVE:
What were the odds that the UT baseball team would still be playing and the softball team would not? Saturday's gritty 5-2 win over Georgia gave the Vols a series win on the road and the final spot in the SEC Tourney at Hoover, Ala. Lest we get too giddy, this brought the Vols' SEC record to 9-21 but a chance is a chance and Tennessee plays LSU Tuesday night. The Vols were swept at home in the regular season by the Top 10 Tigers, but the first game was a close 2-1 score. You never know.

ANOTHER JONES, ANOTHER RECEIVER: Florida receiver Jacquez Jones committed to Tennessee on Friday. Jones is a three-star from Clearwater, who is smallish at 5-10, 165 pounds. Perhaps basketball coach Rick Barnes has convinced our head football coach that three stars is the path to greatness.

WE'RE MORE INTERESTED IN TEE: Although Jones may end up being the next great WR, we're way more interested in Oak Ridge phenom Tee Higgins, who put on a show with just a handful of plays for Oak Ridge in a scrimmage against Seymour at the UT football complex on Friday. Higgins is the most prominent football recruit out of the Knoxville metropolitan area in many years and he is a must-get for Butch Jones and his staff.

With spring sports winding down, this will be your humble writer's last Monday column for a while, even though there is a risk Tony will impose at least a 50% pay cut.

Orange Throat'

Throaty: Karen Weekly wasn't going out easily. She got her money's worth in getting thrown out yesterday. She was PISSSED. I would hate to cross her. I know who wins the arguments in that relationship and it ain't Ralph.

Baseball/Softball Connection: Who woulda thunk the Lady Vols would've been done on by some suspect base running. With the bases loaded in a late inning, the Lady Vols failed to score in a ground ball to first base. That's a no brainer. You have to score there. This is the kind of thing that's been a given with the Weekly’s and their program through the years. Truth is, this is the sort of error that has been a hallmark of the Dave Serrano' tenure. No offense as I write that.

On the baseball front: Great for those kids for not quitting. I threw dirt on them on Friday and why not? Check out this number...Dave Serrano has won 10 of his 50 SEC Baseball series in five seasons. And....In taking 2-3 from Georgia, that's only Tennessee second series win of the season. And...If it's not for Vandy, Tennessee doesn't get to Birmingham. The Vols beat Vandy in a series several weeks back, while the Vols took care of Auburn with a sweep over the weekend. How long will the Vols last in Hoover? Hate to say this, but I'd probably pack light.

Making SEC Tourney Worthy of Celebrating: Absolutely but not worthy of extending a coach. I'm with Beano on this one. No matter what the decision was, making the SEC Tournament shouldn't affect whether or not Serrano returns. To be honest, I'm happy either way.

Thursday Night Football $EC Network:
I realize I bitch a lot, but the powers that be provide an extraordinary amount of material. Tennessee playing a game on Thursday in Knoxville is embarrassing. South Carolina, Kentucky, Vandy, Miss State, Ole Miss, Auburn. South Carolina has played in 12 Thursday games and it's perfect for them because they pretty much suck again. Tennessee was one of only 3 conference teams to have never appeared on Thursday Night (in the modern TV era) along with Georgia and Florida. It's just too much of an inconvenience for fans, but why should the ticket buyer that's supported Tennessee (or any of these institutions) matter. Bottom line is that the big boys in this league don't play on Thursdays. The only reason Bama did it a few years back is that Auburn scheduled an off week before the Iron Bowl so Bama moved a lame ass game with Georgia Southern to allow for more prep time. Does Tennessee really need a few extra days for Va Tech as some are hypothesizing? Are you kidding me?

Geophysical Year of Vols?
9 Home games in state
10 Win O/U from Vegas (highest in the league)
Battle of Bristol: Largest Crowd in CFB History
Thursday Night Opener: 1st time in UT history.
Highest expectations since 2001.
Florida and Bama played in Neyland Stadium
Georgia with a true freshmen QB.
Va Tech down and almost out.
Florida is pedestrian.
South Carolina is back in the mid 90's.
Tennessee with a senior QB.
Butch Jones is all growed (sic Charlie Manuel how ya doin'?)

Tony,

There's plenty to talk about coming out of a jam packed sports weekend. That helps keep everyone occupied til football arrives.

1. I'm very encouraged by the 2017 and 2018 prospects Tennessee basketball is pursuing. They are in the hunt for some serious difference makers.

2. Tennessee should be above playing a home game on a Thursday night. That should be left to the Kentuckys and South Carolinas of the world.

3. Kudos to Dave Serrano and the Tennessee baseball team. They gutted out two wins and made the SEC Tournament.

Click to Clancy's Tavern & Whiskey House!
4. The Showtime documentary on The Drew League in Los Angeles is must see television. It is a fantastic look inside one of the great summer leagues in the country.

5. Nyquist simply did not take well to the slop at Pimlico. Exaggerator, on the other hand, was in his element.

6. San Jose and St. Louis seem to be alternating playing terrible hockey. The first team to display any consistency will capture that series.

7. Crystal Palace completely choked away the FA Cup final. You can't lose with a man advantage in extra time.

8. Golden State now gets the first major test of their championship mettle. They are now in legitimate dannger.

9. Toronto can put some series pressure on Cleveland with a Game 4 win. The momentum completely flips if the series is evened up.

ON MY MONDAY MIND:

THURSDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL? I once believed it was beneath Tennessee Football to play a game on Thursday night. Though I love watching college football as an appetizer for the big slate two days later that was for the Mississippi States and Vandys of the world not Tennessee....

BUYING THE HYPE:

WAY TOO EARLY PRESEASON RANKINGS:

NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP ODDS:

TOTAL WIN LINES: 5 Dimes-10.5; Golden Nugget-10

SEC EAST: Most pundits are projecting the Vols to win the East and they will almost certainly be picked to do so by those who cover the league at SEC Media Days in July....

PERSONNEL:

-Sr QB Joshua Dobbs has demonstrated great leadership skills and is a huge part of the Vols vaunted running game....

SCHEDULE:

VOL BASEBALL: Tennessee might be closing out a D- season but give the BaseVols an A for resilience....

VOLS SEC TOURNEY ROUTE:

MLB:

-Boston OF Jackie Bradley Jr’s single in the 5th inning Sunday gives him a 27 game hitting streak. That’s only slightly less surprising to me than the Red Sox being only one game back in the AL East...[more]

Question: We will discuss this today. Do you believe? The table is completely set for 2016, but do you believe? This season has ALL the bells and whistles, but is there too much going on here? Is it too good to be true. EVERYBODY is picking Tennessee to get to Atlanta. EVERYBODY. Historically this is a program that sneaks up on people more times than not. Back in the 90's the Vols were the break-out National pick during the Manning years, only to win the Natty the year after he left campus. See where I'm going here? Is it for real? It's worth discussing. 2016 is shaping up as a three ring circus. Going to be really run.

Final Thought: I love softball. I really do. I'll still watch the tournament, but why is Jessica Mendoza calling baseball games? She's a softball player. Two different sports. She's an excellent analyst and does a nice job, but she has zero business. Love ESPN's agenda. They are absurd with it.

Final Thought II: Draymond Green is ole school. 'Kick him out!!!!' He kicked Adams in the family jewelry on purpose. No doubt about it. Rodman would've been proud.

Final Four

Friday night’s Iowa-UConn Final Four game had 14.2 million viewers. That’s more than any women’s college basketball game, ever. More than every 2023 NBA Finals game and more than every 2023 World Series game. ESPN has had the rights to NBA games since 2002. But the Final Four game between Iowa and UConn was the networks most-watched basketball game, men’s or women’s, pro or collegiate EVER.... [more]

Missouri Game Preview

The Vols did what they were expected to do against UConn. There's not really much to say about that game. The game this Saturday in Columbia, Missouri will decide whether or not this season is a failure in my opinion. If they Vols lose, they are staring at 8-4 and probably the Gator Bowl. Maybe Reliaquest..... [more]

The Vols are coming back to Neyland Stadium and I am returning after a discretionary bye week. I'll be honest with you. This year it seems like I've been writing the same preview over and over because the formula to win has been the same pretty much every SEC game. I didn't want to sound like a broken record so I needed a bit of a break from that.

I'll start with some general observations..... [more]
