Orange Throat
'Basiliville:

Random musings as we wonder whatever happened to the team formerly known as the Atlanta Braves:

THE THROAT BASEBALL CURSE CONTINUES: Your humble correspondent reveled in the Baseball Vols' series win over Vanderbilt last weekend and in a fit of irrational exuberance, suggested on Wednesday that Dave Serrano's team had a chance to make the NCAA Tourney if it got red hot. The Vols promptly lost that night to a good Alabama State team and then were swept this weekend by the wretched Missouri Tigers. Tony B has given yours truly some justified grief over this the last few days but it should be noted that Tony was bitten by a similar bug after a non-conference win a few months ago and predicted the UT basketball team would go 12-6 in the SEC. Tonah juxtaposed the numbers because Rick Barnes' first team went 6-12. Serrano is now a sizzling 45-93 in the league in his five seasons so go ahead and pin 3 of those 93 on your writer. The other 90 are on Beano, our beloved baseball expert.

CHEATING IN THE SEC WEST CONTINUES, PART ONE:
Ole Miss, already in the midst of an NCAA investigation, had a "oh sh--" moment Thursday night when damning evidence of shenanigans appeared on OT Laremy Tunsil's instagram account and Tunsil confirmed it in a bizarre press conference after he was selected 13th in the first round of the NFL draft. To be sure, Tunsil is a knucklehead of the highest order, but this can be viewed as karma coming to roost for Ole Miss HC Hugh Freeze. If Donald Trump were nicknaming Freeze, he'd be "Cheatin' Hugh." Freeze put together a dazzling and highly suspicious recruiting year in 2013, luring the best DL (Robert Nkemdiche from Loganville, GA), WR (Laquan Treadwell from Crete, IL, a traditional Ole Miss stronghold) and OL (Tunsil from Lake City, FL) in the country. All three were great players and helped the Rebels achieve terrific results the last few years and all three were 1st round draft picks. Perhaps Freeze's biggest mistake was beating Nick Saban's Alabama team two years in a row. The Bammers and their regal coach don't take kindly to somebody outbidding them for players, especially in their own division, although Saban has his own problems, which will be addressed next.

CHEATING IN THE SEC WEST CONTINUES, PART TWO: Alabama DL coach Bo Davis abruptly resigned last week as a smoldering recruiting violation situation appears to be catching fire in Tuscaloosa. Davis was named National Recruiter of the Year by Scout recently and has been a player-getting horse for Saban, who has stacked talent like wood. This situation will be interesting and fun to watch.

STILL ANOTHER VESTIGE OF THE DOOLEY ERA:
Thirty-two NFL teams picked 253 players over three days and countless hours of media coverage and none saw fit to draft one single University of Tennessee player, for the second straight year. Evidently, this hasn't happened since 1963, the same year President John F. Kennedy was assassinated. Derek Dooley was our Lee Harvey Oswald in Tennessee Football history. Several former Vols signed free agent contracts and let's hope good things happen for them. The 2017 draft will mark the first year Butch Jones' first partial year recruiting class are seniors and first full-year class are draft-eligible juniors.

ONE LESS PATRICK IN UT WOMEN'S TENNIS: Though it works well for the Weeklys, UT's other husband-wife coaching team was split up as Sonia-Hahn Patrick stepped down as co-HC with husband Mike of Lady Vol tennis. The pairing has worked pretty well for most of the time since 1998 but the last few years have seen an unmistakable downhill slide as the women's tennis team went 3-10 in 2015 and 1-12 this year and finished 13th both years in the league. Evidently, Davis wasn't also buying women's tennis players because the Tide finished a perfect 0-13 this season. Men's tennis has also hit hard times at UT as Sam Winterbotham's team just went 0-12 in the league. All this will leave a mark on Dave Hart's athletics program ranking in the Learfield Directors Cup standings.

SOFTBALL WINS GAME ONE VS AUBURN: After a rain delay from Saturday, the Lady Vol softball team rang up a 10-2 win over Auburn yesterday afternoon a weathered a rain delay for a sweep.

Item by item here. I'll riff off you today. On the baseball front, your cheap shot at me is Derek Dooley noted. Bottom line with Tennessee Baseball is that hiring a coach isn't going to fix this thing. Tennessee needs a force. They need somebody with energy, smarts and know how. They need somebody that loves this place. They need Chris Burke. Sure he's inexperienced, but he's a MLB baseball player and the all time leader in many offensive categories at Tennessee. Plus he's a national voice on the sport of college baseball. Look, I'm standing in judgment as to whether or not Dave Serrano should be terminated. There are folks way more qualified than this to make the call than your humble talk show host. All I'm saying is that if Tennessee makes a change and they don't hire Chris Burke, they are STUPID with a capital STUPID. Sorry. Just callin' it right down the middle.

On the draft shut out. I kinda get what you're saying Throaty and I kinda don't. If North would've been developed at Tennessee as a route runner, surely he had the raw skills coming out of high school to at least get drafted. Otherwise you're right, Dooley remains the gift that gave way after he left his skid mark in Neyland Stadium.

On Ole Miss: Personally, I find Akeem Esau Freeze is high comedy. He gets the name Esau added to his name here denoting the old testament character Esau: Son of Isaac and Rebecca; sold his birthright to his twin brother Jacob. (Courtesy Infoplease.com) Freeze amuses me. He's a fake, a fraud, and cuts a young Bobby Bowden. I'd be willing to make a deal with him. If he stays out of Tennessee's way in the mid-state and parts west, I'd be willing to let him sit over there and be an African hemorrhoid. BTW, in Nigeria, hemorrhoids are sometimes called Jedi Jedi. Link

Speaking of the 2017 draft, I'll call the shot. Tennessee will have at least one first round draft choice, one in the second, and one in the third. In all, 6 players from this year’s team will go somewhere in the draft.

Tony,

A beautiful Tennessee spring weekend was the backdrop for an enjoyable couple of days. Plenty of interesting goings on in the world of sports.

1. We should get an idea of where UT basketball is headed with their final roster spot fairly soon. The graduate transfer market is beginning to take shape.

2. Bruce Pearl continues to be very active in bringing transfers to Auburn. It will be interesting to see if that strategy is ultimately as successful on The Plains as it was in Knoxville.

3. The Titans appear to have found a quality general manager. Their draft was rather impressive.

4. Luke Walton made the right decision in choosing to coach the Lakers. His stock will never be higher and that is still one of the marquee jobs in the NBA.

5. I was stunned at how easily the Spurs handled Oklahoma City in game one. The Thunder has to show more fight in the second matchup or they may find themselves buried.

6. Miami played one of their best games of the season on their biggest stage to date. Charlotte just had no answers.

7. Golden State looks like a machine right now. They look exceptional even without Steph Curry.

8. The path the the NBA Finals sure looks wide open for Cleveland. Hard to see any of the three teams remaining giving the Cavaliers much trouble.

9. Tennessee baseball hit rock bottom against an awful Missouri team this weekend. Changes have to be made of UT is going to quit being a laughingstock.

I DO LOVE SPRING EVEN WHEN MY BASEBALL TEAMS SUCK

ON MY MONDAY MIND:

DRAFT DIMES:

-The earlier than expected selections of Joey Bosa (#3) and Ezekiel Elliott (#4) didn’t really upset the applecart but probably led to cartwheels in the Jacksonville Jaguar War Room as they used the #5 selection to take arguably the best player in the entire draft; Jalen Ramsey

-I saw something I never dreamed could happen. A university football program take a negative PR hit for having two players selected in the first round....

VOL BASEBALL:

MLB:

-Some odd names appearing among the early season stat leaders include:...[more]

In Tee Mail...We'll carry over our sports regrets from Friday's show. This is a good one. Any position or missed opportunity you would like to share?

'My sports regret is a déjà vu event. In the spring of 1983 I was a senior at UT and attending a FCA event at Stokley. I was waiting on a friend backstage and I saw Reggie White talking to former Cowboy DT Bob Lily. At the time, Reggie was just a college student like me. His senior year was his breakout year, so I didn't think that much, especially since he was with Bob Lily. I took the opportunity to introduce myself to Bob Lily and just spoke to Reggie.

Fast forward 15 years, déjà vu, I was in the St. Louis airport and standing by himself was Reggie White. I just walked past him.

Déjà vu, all over again as the great Yogi would say. December 25, 2004 I was in a movie theater in Huntersville, NC. Reggie walked pass me and went to the restroom. Not wanting to be "one of those guys" and follow him in, I passed on the chance to really talk to him again and watched as he walked in "Fat Albert". The next morning I learned of his passing.

Guess I will not be able to tell the Basilio radio family about my next déjà vu moment with Reggie but I believe I will get that opportunity again.

Kevin:

That's a haunting tale. I had a chance to get to know Reggie in the early 90's. That version of the man was thoughtful, engaging, interesting, opinionated, and flat out cool. It would've been interesting to see where life would've taken him. You talk about a guy gone way too soon.

'By Next football season, If the University of TN could RID itself of Cheek, Hart, leaders of the office of diversity & inclusion, student leaders who started sex week, any compliance or institutional pinhead, NCAA villains, anybody that brings negativity to UT, then next season would be a success.

The slogan should be "PRICK BY PRICK"

Mid State Heath'

MSH: Thoughtful, but that title isn't exactly going to pop on the cover of DVD. Nor would it see T shirts. Great try nonetheless. Keep at it!

Painful weekend for me as an Eagles fan. Just an awful draft by the birds while the Cowboys had a quality haul. Call me crazy but I think Dak Prescott will make a nice NFL QB someday. The Eagles reached on every single pick. The paperboy Howie Roseman is a horror show.

We'll continue with our sport regrets today on the air. Any chance Dave Serrano calls in? I'll bet he regrets leaving that cushy west coast job.....

We can now officially congratulate Caitlin Clark on breaking the record for the most points scored in women’s basketball!

Caitlin Clark is the biggest superstar in college basketball (men’s or women’s). That’s not just me being a fan, Caitlin Clark is HER! Caitlin scored 49 points on February 15th to pass Kelsey Plum’s NCAA record for the most career points in women’s college basketball..... [more]
It's a Love Story

Jared (the redneck from Roanoke, VA) thought the Taylor Swift coverage would end with the Super Bowl, but this love story isn’t going anywhere. In a game that was four hours and 18 minutes (that’s a total of 15,480 seconds). Swift only appeared for around 55 seconds! 55 SECONDS from the moment the game kicked off to the overtime touchdown.

Missouri Game Preview

The Vols did what they were expected to do against UConn. There's not really much to say about that game. The game this Saturday in Columbia, Missouri will decide whether or not this season is a failure in my opinion. If they Vols lose, they are staring at 8-4 and probably the Gator Bowl. Maybe Reliaquest..... [more]
Connecticut Game Preview

The Vols are coming back to Neyland Stadium and I am returning after a discretionary bye week. I'll be honest with you. This year it seems like I've been writing the same preview over and over because the formula to win has been the same pretty much every SEC game. I didn't want to sound like a broken record so I needed a bit of a break from that.

I'll start with some general observations..... [more]
