Thanks to Jackie & Joanie Denny and the entire Toddlow Coach family for making our trip to Keeneland such an outstanding day. At the end of that trip we may have even lost a few dollars in putting it together, but it was worth every penny. I want to personally thank everybody that joined us! Yawl were a wonderful group of people. It never ceases to amaze me how special it is to get folks together and enjoy a terrific sporting event. We're considering doing this again in October. Keeneland is a special place. It's quickly becoming one of my favorite sporting venues in the entire country! That place is pure class. Yesterday was so beautiful. And we ran into a bunch of Tennessee fans like Creed Daniel and his son, as well as Bigger Al out of Louisville, Kentucky. Just an amazing time. Special thanks to the knowledgeable horse players on our bus that took the time to drop knowledge on the novices in aiding all of us in having a mostly profitable day at the track. Also, special assist to Mike Carver for his efforts in touts for our group. If/when we do this again, you must get on the trip! Also, special thanks to Andy Loy and Moosehead for providing amazing beer for the trip! We really had a terrific day.

About that Baseball series…I feel like unpacking that today…And Btw great call by Orange Throat months ago about trouble in paradise with Dave Lawson. That’s why we love Throaty!!! Keep bringing us the 411 here and I’ll keep you anonymous… Deal?

Tennessee over Vandy this weekend in Baseball! We all saw it coming! Sure. Top 5 reasons how and why this happened.

1. Tidal Moons. Not really sure what this means, but I hear it can affect things on Earth from time to time.

2. Dave Serrano is getting the job done and is just a slow starter. Don't know that I buy this but what the heck?

3. Tennessee is better than their record indicates. Again, don't know that I'm buying but we can wish upon a shining star set forth by a tidal moon in motion.

4. Vandy thought they were supposed to perform like the Predators in the playoffs. Is that a double cheap shot on a Monday? Perhaps.

5. Even a blind squirrel finds an acorn every once in a while. In high school I ripped a double off a great pitcher (or maybe I didn't) and my high school head coach said, "Hey Basilio, even a blind.........." You get the picture.

I don't know how it happened, or even why, but I sure am glad for those kids that had a moment in 2016 to call all their own. Players storming the field @ Lindsey Nelson postgame after a series win over Vandy in Knoxville. Traditionalists may look down on this, as here at Tennessee the Vols should be expected to win against the Dores in EVERYTHING. In a perfect world this is true but we are far from in a perfect world these days.

I say to the kids on that Tennessee Baseball team congrats! You guys have come to practice and continued to work to get better this year in the bleakest of times. There's something to be said for resilience and mental toughness, and Tennessee showed this in spades this weekend!

I look at Tennessee winning a series against the #4 team in America as a non-bowl bound football team winning a game against a ranked team. This was Tennessee's bowl game this weekend in baseball! Go ahead and celebrate guys. Yawl earned it.

We can argue all day whether this is good enough, but it's going to have to be for now because it's all that we have. BTW, you could argue that Tennessee is the good enough program in a lot of ways. Tennessee is now an even 5-5 versus Vandy in the last 3 seasons! That's startling #. It kind of reminds me of the way Bruce Pearl's Tennessee teams used to wear out Billy Donovan's National Champion Florida Gators back in the day. One has to wonder what the deal was there. Was is matchups? Was it Tennessee wanting it more? Does this mean that Tennessee underachieved in the post-season? The bottom line is that out of that era of hoops, Tennessee's play versus Florida is something to hang your hat on. Is it good enough????? Get ready........Here at Tennessee the mantra always seems to be........It's going to have to be good enough because it's all we have.

Sometimes lesser teams have better teams #'s. I think this is why sports is so compelling.

Tony,

After a short illness induced absence, it's good to be back in this space. I've got some catching up to do.

1. There is still radio silence about Tennessee's prospects of adding some frontcourt size to the 2016 class. Look for that to change once commencements conclude and Omer Yurtseven gets to the country.

2. The football Vols hit the offseason with a strong spring practice period and continue to get good news on the recruiting trail. Knoxville will be at a fever pitch by the time the season arrives.

3. Urban Myer teeing off on Cardale Jones publicly is bad form. A coach should be a little more supportive of a guy who played a key role in winning a national title.

4. Tubby Smith already getting a crash course in the politics of Memphis basketball. It'll be interesting to see how he handles the Lawson family.

5. Oklahoma City is showing a disturbing lack of composure in their series with Dallas. It is the manifestation of a season long issue.

6. The Clippers made their series with Portland more difficult than it should have been with a fourth quarter collapse in Game 3. Los Angeles has too many veterans to make such elementary mistakes.

7. We may have seen The Famous Final Scene for this incarnation of the Grizzlies yesterday. Chris Wallace and his staff have some very hard personnel decisions in front of them.

8. The effort put forth by the Houston Rockets yesterday was a disgrace to the sport. Multiple heads should roll.

9. The series between Boston and Atlanta is a coaching clinic. Both coaches are extracting results out of wildly flawed rosters.

I would like to congratulate my Flyers for participating in the 2016 playoffs, and I'm about to do the same for the Predators. At some point Nashville must grow up as a playoff franchise. I feel terribly for that fan base that shells out huge dollars annually on regular season hockey only to be tortured and teased in the post-season. What's sad is that hockey is replete with examples of Southern teams that have had tremendous runs and even won Stanley Cups. Carolina, Tampa, Florida, Dallas have all been there and done that, and yet Nashville remains a big tease. They had a 2-0 lead with games 3 and 4 in their building against a #1 seed only to gag out loud. Now the Preds must win game 6 in the music city to avoid a colossal collapse. Sad indeed.

he NFL draft is Thursday, Friday and Saturday, but for my Eagles I will watch Thursday later on Saturday. We got faced by the Browns. The worst organization in perhaps all of sports owned the Eagles last week in a trade. Think about it.

BTW, we will be hosting an NFL Draft Watch Party at Clancy's Tavern and Whiskey House on Thursday Night! Come see the Clone perform his final Neutral Zone show on the Tonybasilio.com app. Radio history and NFL history converge! Hope to see you there Thursday 7pm at Clancy's.

Final Four

Friday night’s Iowa-UConn Final Four game had 14.2 million viewers. That’s more than any women’s college basketball game, ever. More than every 2023 NBA Finals game and more than every 2023 World Series game. ESPN has had the rights to NBA games since 2002. But the Final Four game between Iowa and UConn was the networks most-watched basketball game, men’s or women’s, pro or collegiate EVER.... [more]

Missouri Game Preview

The Vols did what they were expected to do against UConn. There's not really much to say about that game. The game this Saturday in Columbia, Missouri will decide whether or not this season is a failure in my opinion. If they Vols lose, they are staring at 8-4 and probably the Gator Bowl. Maybe Reliaquest..... [more]

The Vols are coming back to Neyland Stadium and I am returning after a discretionary bye week. I'll be honest with you. This year it seems like I've been writing the same preview over and over because the formula to win has been the same pretty much every SEC game. I didn't want to sound like a broken record so I needed a bit of a break from that.

I'll start with some general observations..... [more]
