We're 6 days out from our signing day Spectacular. And I believe it's going to be a spectacular celebration of Tennessee football. Just a great time! Like another holiday for sports fans. Why not? It's all good clean fun! We will have a superb time. Money back guarantee!

The Vols are extending the net in recruiting. Link

Terrific piece on Kevin Punter. The most underrated player in college hoops today gets some much deserved national love here. Good for him. What a great player. Well worth the price of admission. Link

Congrats to Fidel Gödel. Mission accomplished. The Manning 'story' was included in all of the nightly newscasts last night. The NFL succeeded in using Manning for publicizing the big game. In Wrasslin' they call it 'cheap heat'. In this case, it's very cheap. But what more would you expect from Fidel? It's all he knows.

I think Cam Newton gets it wrong. It's not being an African-American with his skill set that is an issue with this person. It's that Cam Newton, and I say this as a rather ebullient Italian-American sports radio personality, acts like a fool at times on the football field. He plays the game like a guy that's never made a play even though he makes ALL the plays most of the time. This makes him a target for the critics. Cam Newton can bitch all he wants, but he brings this on himself. I'm shocked he hasn't been knocked down by the way he shows up his opponents. It's completely unnecessary and is just poor sportsmanship. I guess this is what passes for entertainment today.

The sad thing is that I'd love to love Cam Newton. He reminds me of my all time favorite Philadelphia Eagle in the way he plays the game. Cam is bigger and he's a bigger winner, but both guys are a revolutionary presence at the time they play in the NFL. Newton is the only athlete in the history of the NFL to have a Heisman Trophy, A National Championship, a Juco Natty, and a Juco Player of The Year award to go with his NFL MVP that is surely forthcoming. If he wins it all in 10 days, he will simply go down as one of the biggest winners the game has ever seen. In my opinion he plays like a loser. He's a poor sport. Don't tell me it's evolution. It's nonsense. There's no place for behaving like this in team sports.

I appreciate Cam Newton. He's a terrific player. His greatness is undeniable. He doesn't get the love from the public because he simply isn't loveable in the way he plays the sport. He acts like Donald Trump in a football helmet. Which is to say he's polarizing. Trump doesn't care who he offends and neither does Newton.

The # of guys to win a National Title, a Heisman Trophy, and Super Bowl is scarce. Post 1970, the following guys have won a Heisman and a Super Bowl.

Roger Staubach Heisman 1963 Navy. A two time Super Bowl champion (72,78) Tony Dorsett: Heisman 1976 Pitt. Super Bowl Champion 1978 Jim Plunkett: Heisman 1970 Stanford. Super Bowl Champion QB (81,84) Marcus Allen: Heisman 1981 USC. Super Bowl Champion (1984) George Rogers: Heisman '80 USCjr. Super Bowl Champ ('88) Redskins Charles Woodson: Heisman '97 Michigan SB Champ ('11) Green Bay

Remember, Newton could become the only guy to ever win a Heisman, Natty, and Super Bowl. So, why won't he act like he's been there before? The guy is sickeningly great. My dislike of him has NOTHING to do with race.

Going into Super Bowl 50, Allen is the only player to ever win a Heisman, Natty, Super Bowl and NFL MVP. No QB has ever done it. Great stuff.

Ironically, Manning could've been already in select company if the former conglomerate of ABC/Cap Cities had decided to give the Heisman to Charles Woodson in 1997. It should be pointed out that Woodson went on to have a wonderful, HOF level career in the NFL, but his winning the Heisman in 1997 was a sham in any language.

When you look at this on paper, you can't help but admire the level of greatness already achieved by Cam Newton. He's a terrific player that happens to behave like a super bad sport.

Never thought I'd live long enough to see the Lady Vols under attack. A vote on the name has been postponed by a week. What's this all about? Link

This must be comforting for Jason Garrett. Link

Congrats to former Smokies play-by-play guy and all-around beautiful guy Tom Hart on being named a finalist for the play by play announcer of the Pittsburgh Pirates. That's huge stuff. You go Tom Hart!!! Great for you, Kate and the family!!! Love it!!! We're so proud of you. I said we're so proud of you.

Final Four

Friday night’s Iowa-UConn Final Four game had 14.2 million viewers. That’s more than any women’s college basketball game, ever. More than every 2023 NBA Finals game and more than every 2023 World Series game. ESPN has had the rights to NBA games since 2002. But the Final Four game between Iowa and UConn was the networks most-watched basketball game, men’s or women’s, pro or collegiate EVER.... [more]

Missouri Game Preview

The Vols did what they were expected to do against UConn. There's not really much to say about that game. The game this Saturday in Columbia, Missouri will decide whether or not this season is a failure in my opinion. If they Vols lose, they are staring at 8-4 and probably the Gator Bowl. Maybe Reliaquest..... [more]
Connecticut Game Preview

The Vols are coming back to Neyland Stadium and I am returning after a discretionary bye week. I'll be honest with you. This year it seems like I've been writing the same preview over and over because the formula to win has been the same pretty much every SEC game. I didn't want to sound like a broken record so I needed a bit of a break from that.

I'll start with some general observations..... [more]
