If the SEC East was a hospital Tennessee seems to be the patient poised for the longest and most prosperous life as we enter December of 2015. Vandy and Kentucky are terminally Vandy and Kentucky. It really doesn't matter what they do at those two places. Sugar high salaries aside, it's never going to happen there. Meanwhile, Mizzou is in critical condition with little chance of a full recovery. Georgia has a rare infection called uncertainty and it's spreading to South Carolina. This is an airborne virus known to impact the lungs and overall vitality of a program. Florida has had a wonderful fall but their vital signs are troubling as recruiting hasn't been what it should be under JM. Ladies and gentleman the model patient in the SEC East General Hospital is your Tennessee Volunteers and they seem poised for a long and fruitful run in the division. I expect no less than Tennessee to play in the SEC Title Game 3 of the next 5 years. It's upon us. Get ready to run.

The Vols might even be poised to get back to serious playoff contention when you look around the modern landscape and consider.

1) Saban and Bama are going to close the curtain at some point semi-soon. It could happen as soon as the Colts or Texas come calling in the off-season.

2) LSU is Miles away from the program they were coming into November. I don't care what Saban and Alleva say, you don't come back from that without long lasting internal injuries. Yes, we are still in the hospital here.

3) Auburn little super group of coaches is akin to ASIA back in the day. Great debut but little else to smile about. Man, they did have a great off-season and shoot a wonderful video. Call it the heat of the moment.

4) Georgia: No matter who they hire that program will take a step backwards until the new guy learns this league.

5) SCjr: Read #4.

6) Texas A&M: Until they win a division, I consider them a glorified Ole Miss. No offense intended to either fan base but please deal with it.

This is a GOLDEN opportunity for Tennessee to do something special.

Orange Throat cometh.

Orange Throat
'Random musings as we celebrate a return of Vandy to being Vandy and Tennessee to being Tennessee:

A GAME TO PLEASE CAFEGO: Our 53-28 blitzing of Vandy, which should have been more along the lines of 60-14 if Butch Jones would have kept the gas pedal mashed, was enough to please the dearly departed Tennessee legend George Cafego, a Vandy hater of the highest order. When Cafego was on the coaching staff, John Majors would have the venerable kicking coach address the team during Vandy week, and his oratory was guaranteed to make the saltiest sailor blush. I have to say Butch was right in playing reserves on defense in the fourth quarter.

A KICKING GAME TO PLEASE NEYLAND: Now that PK Aaron Medley has regained his groove, there is no question Tennessee has the best overall kicking game in the country. 2nd in the SEC and 15th in the nation in KO Return Defense, 1st in the nation in KO Returns, punter Trevor Daniel is 2nd in the SEC and 6th in the nation, 2nd in the SEC and nation in punt returns. Speaking of Medley, Jones stood by his kicker after missing three long attempts at Alabama and the sophomore has rewarded his coach by hitting 12 of his last 13.

LACK OF FLAGS: Another sign of Tennessee being a well-coached team under Butch Jones is we are the least penalized team in the SEC and 6th in the nation.

STABILITY IN A SEA OF CHAOS: It was thought Georgia might stay with Mark Richt if he beat Georgia Tech. He did but Georgia didn't. It was thought last week that Les Miles was gone, regardless of the outcome of the Texas A&M game. Supposedly, the LSU brain trust (careful about the use of that term) came to the decision to keep Miles during the third quarter of Saturday night's game. Perhaps Florida State's Jimbo Fisher didn't return a call at halftime. Who knows? South Carolina has been thought to be focusing on Alabama DC Kirby Smart after a rebuke from Houston's Tom Herman, but Smart now is probably in play at Georgia, his alma mater. Add to all of this the fact Auburn has stumbled to a 6-6 overall record and 2-6 SEC mark after being picked by many to win the SEC. HC Gus Malzahn will be on the hottest of hot seats next season. Tennessee's program under Butch Jones is a sturdy battleship by comparison in this stormy sea, and the rest of this 2016 recruiting campaign should see the Vols making big gains. In fact, the top ranked JUCO in the country, 6-6, 264-pound DE Jonathan Kongbo committed yesterday.

GOING BOWLING: After Alabama, presumably heading to a second straight national playoff appearance, our Volunteers have arguably the most momentum going into the bowl season. The Big Orange fan base is upbeat and ready for some more football and that makes UT attractive to the bowls vying for SEC teams. I agree with you, Tony. I want to see us challenged with a top flight opponent. I want to see a game where the Vol offense needs to throw as well as run to win, and the defense has to defend against a good passing game. This will help us get a good baseline on next season.

Brought to you on Thursdays by

My running thoughts on Saturday's Vandy game and other college football nuggets....

Great to see Dobbs back running around Saturday. He's your all time single season rushing record holder post-Vandy. Congrats!

If UT's going to make it count in 2016, Dobbs has got to be able next year to make that pass to Kamara that he missed on 2nd series. Needs to get a little better. Just a little bit!!

Vols struggled in base defense versus Vandy's O early on was interesting. Tennessee's LB's struggled at times against Vandy's now exotic yet historically basic offensive approach. It was interesting to see.

Love how Andre Ware kept comparing Dobbs to Cam Newton. He can't believe that. I wonder about Ware a whole bunch. He seems like one of those guys that looks the part but when you really listen to him, you wonder if he even prepares. Ware went on about how Dobbs has excellent touch. Look, I love Dobbs but nobody's ever going to accuse him of being a touch passer let along juxtapose him with Cam Newton. Absurd comparison. Here's a novel idea Andre...Why not let Dobbs be Dobbs and you be ......well.....the guy that was fighting in the booth for UT to keep Dooley back in the day.

Vols D made Vandy look like Patriots in 1st half. 6 play, 80 yd drive made it 17 14 Vols w 2nd Q just underway.

That field when Von Pearson slipped on UT's 4th series was all time bad.

Good for Medley. He killed a 45 yarder after Pearson fell down. Medley has had a great comeback season.

Even though they didn't get 1st down it was a wonderful decision to go 4th and short up 13. Butch Jones seems to have learned a great deal from Oklahoma and his defense rewarded him with that safety. Stay aggressive coach.

Great to see Hurd roll with the running game in 2nd half as Vols punished Candy.

Mighty Joe Young with a superbly patient TD run to push Vols over the back 50 mark. Tennessee's blocking on the counter was sweet.

Nice touch to let Bullock kick the PAT that was UT's 53rd point.

Ohio State is the underachiever in college football this season. No matter what they are locked out and this is a beautiful thing.

Laugh if u want but I believe UNC is beating Clemson Saturday.

I want Michigan in a bowl game. Doesn't look like it's going to happen according to the projections, but I can dream, right?

It was great seeing Beamer go out a winner. He has been that program. Without his efforts Tech would still be Hokie High.

Fuente is a curious hire at Tech. Besides one of CBJ's chips is now off the table. How will Fuente work in a tougher league without Paxton Lynch falling into his lap?

Kirby Smart and South Carolina seemed stupid. Kirby Smart and Georgia seems just plain dumb. I hope they do it!!! Just sayin'.

Verne Lundquist had the audacity to take a shot at NFL replays taking too much time. Hey Verne, CBS has perfected the 4+ hour regulation football game.

Are you telling me that LSU considered running off an 80% winning pct coach with the #1 recruiting class in America without an in the pocket (sorry T Rob) hire?

Will Mushchamp is a flat out psycho on the sidelines. His antics could've cost Auburn a shot at winning. 15 extra yards put Bama in fg range with the Tide's final points.

Early in Temple U Conn game Ahmad Brooks used the term 'eye manipulation.' Move over coach Jones. You've got cliché company.

Vols in the Music City Bowl? I'll go on record right now and say anywhere but the Belk Bowl. I proclaimed on Twitter yesterday that if the Belk Bowl grabs the Vols I'll spend $300 in Monday a week at Dillard’s. Deal with it.

Patrick Towles could be a great in the right situation. Link

Tee Mail:

'One piece of trivia that nobody is talking about for Tennessee. Joshua Dobbs went from wire to wire as the starting QB. When is the last time a Tennessee did that?

2009 - Crompton. (I seem to remember a lot of frustration on this point that Lane Kiffin would not change QBs and instead stuck with Crompton and made him better.)

Since 2005 that has only happened 3 times for Tennessee. 2007, 2009, 2015. The years where we didn't have a QB go all the way? Mostly forgettable.

From 1995-2005 it happened 7 times. 2003, 2001, 1999-1995. Pretty good years by the way.

The importance of keeping the QB healthy can't be overstated. Additional trivia; Name the only two teams to win the SEC Championship game with a backup QB? LSU in 2001 and 2007-both times beating Tennessee.

Again, keeping Dobbs healthy and playing is a huge deal for this team. I had my doubts that this he would make it.

Now if they only get him a real, live, honest to goodness QB coach. Maybe if Peyton retires . . .

GBO!

We can now officially congratulate Caitlin Clark on breaking the record for the most points scored in women’s basketball!

Caitlin Clark is the biggest superstar in college basketball (men’s or women’s). That’s not just me being a fan, Caitlin Clark is HER! Caitlin scored 49 points on February 15th to pass Kelsey Plum’s NCAA record for the most career points in women’s college basketball..... [more]
It's a Love Story

Jared (the redneck from Roanoke, VA) thought the Taylor Swift coverage would end with the Super Bowl, but this love story isn’t going anywhere. In a game that was four hours and 18 minutes (that’s a total of 15,480 seconds). Swift only appeared for around 55 seconds! 55 SECONDS from the moment the game kicked off to the overtime touchdown.

Missouri Game Preview

The Vols did what they were expected to do against UConn. There's not really much to say about that game. The game this Saturday in Columbia, Missouri will decide whether or not this season is a failure in my opinion. If they Vols lose, they are staring at 8-4 and probably the Gator Bowl. Maybe Reliaquest..... [more]

The Vols are coming back to Neyland Stadium and I am returning after a discretionary bye week. I'll be honest with you. This year it seems like I've been writing the same preview over and over because the formula to win has been the same pretty much every SEC game. I didn't want to sound like a broken record so I needed a bit of a break from that.

I'll start with some general observations..... [more]
