We all know and understand that when you make an American woman mad, you pay the price. Last night Japan learned this the hard way. 4 goals in the first 16 minutes put that game out of reach way early. Sure, the broadcasters doing the game on Fox did their best to sell that it was still a contest but it was all over at halftime. The US was wonderful on set pieces plus the fourth US goal of the foot of Carli Lloyd was a thing of beauty. Women's soccer on the world level is respectable. It translates rather decently from its male counterpart. I enjoy it because it seems to be a little more wide open. This makes it a much more palatable game to US sports fans. It was great to see Wamabach get in the game late and make some noise. 40 year old Christie Rampone got in with 5 minutes left for Alex Morgan. I feel great for this country today. Really special to win it for a 3rd time over Independence weekend. You can't script any better than that.
Why were the ratings so strong for the Women's World Cup in the US.

Now that the Women's World Cup has gone to the lovely gals from the USA, Beano asks a very pertinent question today on the program as he fills in for me. Beano is wondering what's in your sports survival kit. You now must make it from July 6th through mid August when things really get cranked up in earnest. I realize that college football has become a year round endeavor but we all have go to secrets sports-wise to bridge that gap in the summer. Perhaps you can turn someone on today to the merits of the CFL or MLS or even the Gold Cup. Maybe you have a hobby that you'd like to share. You could be a Bama fan machinating on possible ways to cheat in recruiting. At any rate we are but a week away from SEC Media Days in Birmingham so it’s getting so close you can feel it.

Keith Hatfield will join Beano today proving that we have the deepest radio family bench in the sports talk radio game. Here's Keith with today's Hatfield IX.
Hatfield's Nine
'The annual celebration of America's independence has come and gone. We continue to grind through the dog days of the sports year.
1. Knoxville lost a giant with the passing of Joel Helton this weekend. The value of the lessons men like Coach Helton teach the young men who play for them is immeasurable.
2. A little respect and a whole lot of money can remedy just about any situation. That's certainly what resulted in Tobias Harris and Orlando reaching an accord.
3. The Pacers have to feel like they've won the lottery. Their ability to move Roy Hibbert shows there is next to no such thing as an untradeable contract.
4. The Spurs once again have remade themselves in a manner that keeps them among the NBA elite. LaMarcus Aldridge is a perfect addition to that roster.
5. The boycott of Nike those wedded the Lady Vols logo were threatening doesn't appear to have gone as planned. The Vol Shop locations are essentially printing money.
6. It'll be interesting to see if Tiger Woods can build on a decent showing this weekend. The inability to put together consecutive quality performances has been his signature of late.
7. One would hope the team's atrocious performance this weekend would finally convince management it is time to blow up the roster in Cincinnati. There's no reason to wait a second longer to start the renovation project.
8. Croatia gave the United States all they wanted in the U19 finals. The gap continues to narrow between the US and the rest of the world.
9. The college hoops recruiting trail heats back up this week. We should start seeing some definition to who teams are pursuing in the next few weeks.

I know one thing, baseball isn't getting it done for me this summer. In fact it's flat out abhorrent. Just a complete mess. My Phillies are damn disgusting. They literally should seat GM Ruben Amarro Jr. (AKA Ruin Tomorrow Sooner) behind home plate with a dunce cap fixed to his head. Or they should stick that clown in a dunk tank. Just a joke. I'm sitting there yesterday cheering for the Braves to get sweep. What is that all about? I'm hoping for a 115 losses. The dream is still alive though yesterday's win over the Braves was painful.
For all the advancements in sports medicine in the past 30 years, the brain remains a great mystery.
