We begin on this Friday with Orange Throat who digs into the Butch/Michigan speculation that I believe is Butch induced. Don't we all want people to know that we're wanted? It's great business for Butch to kick this up? Dave Hart fashions himself as a hardball player. Let a couple of top targets turn down Michigan in the next 24 to 48 and this could get really interesting.

For those not familiar, Orange Throat is way inside the program. He knows from whence he speaks. He's getting a tad bit concerned and has a stern message for Dave Hart.

Orange Throat
'Tennessee Nation:

As of this writing on Thursday night, all appearances are that Butch Jones is allowing his name to continue to float around the Michigan vacancy. There is good reason to believe this is because he and Dave "Hitman" Hart have not yet come to terms on a new contract extension.

It is a seller's market in the head college football coach business these days. At around $3.0 million, Butch is at the bottom of the SEC heap for next year. There are strong indications that the "Hitman" doesn't want to give him a big raise off a 6-6 record. On one hand, that's understandable, as the Vols looked very beatable in the second half at Vanderbilt and a loss there would have us wondering this week if Butch was really the guy. But, the Volunteers prevailed and exhibited a strong freshman class this season and another top recruiting year is in the works. Plus, Butch has endeared himself to the fan base and all constituencies.

Given all this, the "forever young" Hart might age quickly if Butch bolts for Ann Arbor. His basketball hire is immensely likable but is already in trouble. The Lady Vols are in revolt over the branding situation. I wouldn't get too cute on Butch's deal. Donors will step up, if needed. Worried about your reserve? What if Butch leaves, this recruiting year dissolves and you're not able to make an inspiring hire?

The Tennessee fan base can't get jilted again by a promising football coach. There would be hell to pay, and the only person left in town to blame would be the Alabama graduate. It's the price of doing business in these times.

Orange Throat'

Truth: The big money era in college football has devalued jobs from coast to coast. Just look at who the 'big boys' are hiring these days. Jim McElwain isn't bad but he's not a home run hire. He's more like a Texas League single. He's OK. He's solid. He's not exceptional. He's proof that college coaching is jumping the shark. Nobody is truly attainable anymore in this huge money era. Look at the deal Florida had to but together to get a 22-16 coach. It's going to cost them close to $15 million in cash and prizes when it's all said and done. National types decried the Tennessee opening a couple of years ago and being devalued after the Fulmer/Kiffin/Dooley mess. Well, Florida isn't exactly a blue chip stock. In fact, the money is so great from coast the coast that very few jobs are worth jumping at.

Mike Riley? Hey. Nice guy. No doubt. Solid man. 61 years old. Bear Bryant guy. He was once passed over for Rod Dowhower at Vanderbilt and now he's the head coach at Nebraska. In all fairness, Riley was the choice at probation riddled Alabama back in the day but turned down a chance to coach his alma mater. Still, Riley is another bloop single. Can't imagine a lot of excitement in either Lincoln or Gainesville today. That's just truth.

But who really out there is going to get a fan base excited this side of Nick Saban. Truth is these guys are a bunch of glorified PE Teachers and very few of them answer to the description special. If this isn't true, how else do you explain the runaway success of guys like Malzahn, Freeze and Briles. These guys are HIGH SCHOOL coaches for crying out loud. Yeah and football is football is football is football. I guess what I'm saying is that most of these guys better thank their lucky stars for Saban and Meyer, et al. The special coaches are helping the rest of these schleps become rich for generations to come.

When you look at what Florida and Nebraska failed to accomplish, it really makes you appreciate Butch Jones. He's much more accomplished than the hire by either Florida or Nebraska.

Money and huge buyouts have made most candidates either out of reach or most openings undesirable. Think about that for a second. Michigan's not getting Harbaugh. That's not going to happen in this lifetime, so where are they going to go? It will be retread city for them or young assistant or do they pay a school like Tennessee a fortune for the right to pay Butch Jones a fortune? It's going to be really interesting. There were rumors going around that Jim Tressel was involved at Nebraska before they pulled the trigger on Mike Riley. I would much rather have Tressel than Riley. Then again, I'd take Butch Jones ahead of anybody hired so far this off-season for any of these openings.

Great call by Donnie Tyndall on offering to feed the students tomorrow afternoon before the UT/Kansas State game in TBA. It's a shame these guys let Marquette happen on Sunday. It's going to be interesting to see what kind of crowd UT draws opposite Christmas shopping and the football conference title games. I'm thinking somewhere in the 7 to 10 k actual attendance would be a solid day at the office.

Who you cheering for tomorrow between Mizzou and Bama? You do realize that if Mizzou wins, the SEC probably gets locked out of the playoff? Yes. I realize that (answered my own question there) and I don't care. I cheer for UT a team that happens to play in the SEC. I don't cheer for SEC teams. SEC teams are my enemy. I enjoy the fact that Tennessee plays in the SEC. I appreciate the tradition, power and pop of these programs but I don't nor will I ever cheer for them. I will cheer for Mizzou tomorrow because I have an intense Bama hatred and a dark sense of humor in that order. Does this make any sense? Are you with me?

'A fantastic week of hoops now cedes center stage to Championship Saturday in college football.

1. There likely won't be a better night of college basketball during the regular season than what we witnessed on Wednesday. The number of incredible games was incredible.

2. The prevailing opinion at the moment seems to be that Tennessee is headed to the Liberty Bowl. A couple of days in the Bluff City sounds good to me.

3. The Twitter hysteria regarding "reports" of mutual interest between Butch Jones and Michigan is fascinating. Nobody wrings their hands over hypothetical scenarios like Vol fans.

Click to Clancy's Tavern & Whiskey House!
4. It appears rather apparent that Roy Williams has hit the Phil Fulmer Stage of his career. The Tar Heels simply don't respond to him like they once did.

5. The selection committee has their hands full sorting out the four participants in the initial College Football Playoff. There appears to be no scenario where multiple teams excluded don't fly into blind rages.

6. The game tonight in Lexington is intriguing. Texas is one of the very few teams with the frontcourt size to look UK eye to eye.

7. Florida faces a tall task at Kansas. The Gators have to raise the level of their early play substantially to avoid a blowout loss.

8. Jim McElwain is a wait and see hire for Florida. I just don't think his resume is substantial enough to merit predictions of success or failure.

9. Tennessee faces a battle tested Kansas State team at TBA tomorrow. A win would be a huge shot in the arm for Big Orange hoops.

'Butch Jones and Michigan might have a couple of days of flirtation after-all. Yesterday, a report loosely came out that Jones was delaying the signing of his extension with Tennessee to see if the Wolverines actually came calling for his services. Bottom line, and Tony and I said as much on Tuesday when a smaller publication claimed he had already turned the job down, that at the very least Jones is going to use this opening as a useful negotiating tool for his long-term security. Florida paying a relatively unproven head coach $3.5 million raised the bar monetarily. I would be surprised if Butch stays for anything less than $3.8 million assuming both Harbaugh and Miles turn down Michigan.

I have some strong feelings on this that I’ll save for Young Guns at 3PM EST.

The landscape of college football coaching has changed. Just look at Nebraska hiring Mike Riley from Oregon State. For the most part, big time coaches are staying put as more schools realize that they have to spend money to be relevant. Who is the last premier program to land their top choice? Notre Dame getting Kelly and Ohio State hiring Urban Meyer are the only two I can think of in the past four or five years.

LeBron James (stop yelling at me about how it is football season) loses forty pounds of muscle in the same off-season that the league announces that HGH testing is going to be a thing, and no one is really concerned? That’s all I’ll say about that.

Donnie Tyndall hit the cafeteria on campus yesterday to interact with the student body (not in the same way that some say that Pea….never mind). No one can question the effort the ball coach is putting in, but I still can’t help but worry that the hammer is eventually coming down. Either way, this weekend’s game against Kansas State would be a good building block for this program to win, especially after that disappointing performance against Marquette. We’re all rooting for Donnie Knoxville, but we all have that feeling you get when someone’s about to get whacked.

How would you feel about Butch Jones and his staff getting substantial raises, think around $4 million a year, if it ensured they were here for the long run? I want to know the mindset of the common fan; is it all-in for this staff?

We can now officially congratulate Caitlin Clark on breaking the record for the most points scored in women’s basketball!

Caitlin Clark is the biggest superstar in college basketball (men’s or women’s). That’s not just me being a fan, Caitlin Clark is HER! Caitlin scored 49 points on February 15th to pass Kelsey Plum’s NCAA record for the most career points in women’s college basketball..... [more]
It's a Love Story

Jared (the redneck from Roanoke, VA) thought the Taylor Swift coverage would end with the Super Bowl, but this love story isn’t going anywhere. In a game that was four hours and 18 minutes (that’s a total of 15,480 seconds). Swift only appeared for around 55 seconds! 55 SECONDS from the moment the game kicked off to the overtime touchdown.

Missouri Game Preview

The Vols did what they were expected to do against UConn. There's not really much to say about that game. The game this Saturday in Columbia, Missouri will decide whether or not this season is a failure in my opinion. If they Vols lose, they are staring at 8-4 and probably the Gator Bowl. Maybe Reliaquest..... [more]

The Vols are coming back to Neyland Stadium and I am returning after a discretionary bye week. I'll be honest with you. This year it seems like I've been writing the same preview over and over because the formula to win has been the same pretty much every SEC game. I didn't want to sound like a broken record so I needed a bit of a break from that.

I'll start with some general observations..... [more]
