Micah Abernathy, 4-star cornerback from Greater Atlanta Christina, commits to Vols! Link

Win/Win Weekend For Tennessee:
Is Micah Abernathy on the verge of committing to the Vols? Great piece here by Michael Carvell in AJC. You'll want to read this! Link

Micah Abernathy is a link to civil rights history as his grandfather Ralph was a confidant and the right hand man of Martin Luther King Jr. Link

In fact, Abernathy was at Lorraine Motel the night King was assassinated. You talk about coming full circle. How amazing would it be for his grandson to pick UT? Kind of give me chills thinking about it. Neat stuff. Link

Here's more on Micah. Link

Reminder before we roll with Orange Throat to start things off this morning. He brings up some great stuff that we will surely discuss today on the show.

Please remember that we will bring you the Smartway/Dalton Bearing 5th Quarter/Fan Reaction tomorrow as soon as the UTC game goes final. It will be great to get back into the win column!! Get the app. Droid | iPhone

Orange Throat
Tony B:

Thanks for banning the "F" word on Wednesday. Time to move on. We, and especially Mike Bajakian, will never get back that moment in time when he chose to throw on 2nd and 5 late in the 3rd qtr., about 17 minutes away from a memorable celebration on the Tennessee River.

Though the Mocs are no Austin Peay, Chattanooga presents the last opportunity to this offensive staff to figure some things out. Call it a nice eye in the middle of a Category 5 hurricane of a schedule.

This season, and a bowl game, is far from lost:
Ole Miss will be nasty on defense, but we're catching them at a great time.

Alabama will be super tough, but their invincibility is gone.

South Carolina is reeling.

Kentucky may be on a sugar high right now. We'll see.

Missouri has a nifty QB and a scary quick pass rush, but the game is in Neyland.

And, Vandy has been brought back to consciousness and has realized it's Vandy.

So, what's the most important thing we need to accomplish tomorrow, in addition to the win? We need to make progress at Quarterback.

WORLEY: Hopefully, Worley and the starters will get a nice lead in the first half and can turn it over to the backup QB. By the way, I think Worley will bounce back from the "F" word game and shine in the near future, IF he stays healthy. Which leads me to my point: Is Peterman really our backup QB?

PETERMAN: By all accounts, you'd love for this young man to marry your daughter or head up your FCA chapter. His stat line, however, is horrific. We all remember that hellish first half at The Swamp last year -- 11 pass attempts for 5 yards. 4 completed to our guys, 2 to their guys. For his career, he's thrown 33 passes for 65 yards, completing 15. His longest completion in 33 throws is 15 yards.

DOBBS: Dobbs was pressed into action last year as a true freshman. He was 72 of 121 for 695 yards last year, with 6 INTs and 2 TDs. He ran for a net 189 yards after counting sacks. He had a very subpar game in the loss to Vanderbilt, which might explain the staff's unwillingness to press him into action next after Worley. Dobbs is a year older and while he won't remind you of Nick Marshall or Dak Prescott, he can make some hay with our Zone/Gap Read. I don't think Dobbs is ever going to be a great QB, but we're talking reality here.

So, If Worley gets hurt sometime the rest of the season, who are you putting your bowl hopes on? What did the coaches see in Peterman's relief stint at Athens that we didn't? Who will give incoming freshman Dormady the best competition in the spring?

There's a lot riding on this. Bajakian only had about 30 seconds to decide on that 2nd & 5 call. He's had since the third quarter of the Georgia game on the backup decision.

Orange Throat

Orange Throat makes a great point. Who is the second quarterback to come in for the Vols when that game gets ugly? Dobbs wants to redshirt but what he wants and what the team needs could be in congruent.

PAIN LINGERS; FOOTBALL FUN SURVIVES

LAST WORD..WORDS...PARAGRAPHS ON FLORIDA THEN NO MORE "F" WORD

SINCE WE LAST SPOKE: 10-9-14

LAST WORD ON FLORIDA: The disappointment of the loss to Florida has without question lingered for longer than any I can remember since the 21-20 loss in 2006. I will for months –if not years- lament the missed opportunities in the 3rd quarter following what should have been devastating Gator turnovers....

WHAT WE WILL LEARN IN WEEK 7:

ONE MISSISSIPPI; TWO MISSISSIPPI This weekend will go a long way in determining if Ole Miss and Mississippi State can be as dominant in the SEC West as they have been in this week’s blog....

WHAT WE MUST SEE FROM VOLS vs UTC:

LET EM ALL PLAY AND HEALTHY WE’LL STAY: The Vols have a brutal three week stretch after UT-C including Ole Miss and Alabama arguably the two most physical teams on the schedule. Depth –already a major concern- could be further depleted in October’s final two contests so it only makes sense to play as many as possible versus the Mocs....

WHAT VOL FANS SHOULD KNOW ABOUT UTC?

OFFENSE
The Mocs bring an improving offense to the game, having scored 135 points in their last three outings (45.0 ppg)

Jr QB and Walter Payton Award Candidate Jacob Huesman (66-104; 681yds; 9TDs; 4 INTs) is coming off a six TD performance against VMI last week, tying career-highs with four passing strikes and two rushing scores...[more]

Vol Colonel brings it back again! You can't keep a good man down.

Vol Colonel
'It's Homecoming Time in Tennessee. The Volunteers get back to the gridiron tomorrow at 4pm for Homecoming 2014 vs. UT Chattanooga. The Vols enter this game 26 point favorites over the Mocs. I think the main thing for our Volunteers this week is to get out there and have some fun and get that bad taste out of their mouths from last week's game. This is the kind of game where ideally you'd like to jump on the Mocs early, work on some things and try to give a lot of your back-ups and young guys some valuable playing time. The two things you don't want to do Saturday is find yourself in a tight game because of a hangover from last week and you don't want to get anyone hurt.

There's a lot of chatter going around about Jacob Gilliam getting back on the field this week. I really hope this doesn't happen.. I understand this young man has a lot of heart and drive and wants to get back out there and help this team. I also understand nobody comes back from a serious injury like this and plays a month after being hurt, especially a big guy. My gut tells me this isn't a wise move by Coach Jones, if indeed, Gilliam plays. Sure this kid is telling you he can play. It's obvious this young man really cares and wants to get back out there, but somebody has to be wise enough not to let this happen. I'd really hate to see this kid get hurt worse and possibly carry around the effects of this injury for the rest of his life. I'm praying for Jacob, but I really hope Coach Jones doesn't let this happen. I'm all for maybe letting him get in for a play on Senior Day, but coming back now is just way too soon.

One player I'm excited about seeing this Saturday is RB Derrell Scott. I think Scott is going to be a really nice compliment to Jalen Hurd. If I were the Vols this week, I'd give Scott a pretty good amount of work and I'd limit Hurd and make sure he's ready to go for the stretch run. That's all I have on the Vols this week. Get all over the Mocs early, play a lot of folks, and don't get anyone hurt.

Around the SEC and the Nation

So Georgia and the NCAA can make money off of Todd Gurley's likeness and autograph, but Gurley himself cannot. What a flawed outdated system. It's a complete joke

Mississippi State QB Dak Prescott might be the most dynamic player in this league since Cam Newton

I think Ole Miss gets their 1st loss of the season Saturday as they travel to play Texas A&M

Auburn goes down to Mississippi State in Starkville

How real is Arkansas? we'll know after Saturday's home game with Alabama

Don't expect the resurgence at Kentucky to last too long. Stoops will use this success as a springboard for a bigger, better job.

Mizzou might be licking their chops to face a Georgia team minus Todd Gurley, but if they're not careful, they'll get chubbed. Nick Chubb to the rescue.

Click to The Garza Law Firm
I'll admit the PAC 12 is good, but it's not SEC good. Those teams would get eaten up in this league. They play finesse ball out there. The SEC plays physical.

Penn St. will be the latest team to stick it to Brady Hoke and Michigan in the Big House.

The Red River Rivalry sure has lost some of its luster on the national stage.

Rich Rod has regained his coaching credibility out at Arizona. He has the Wildcats undefeated and looking for more as they face USC out in Tucson, Saturday

I'd rather watch paint dry as I had watch Big Ten football. What boring garbage.

While every other team in America has to fight and try to claw their way into the 4 team playoff. FSU just has to sit back and devour cupcakes or in their case, crab legs.

Don't look now, but Notre Dame could be a party crasher.

That's all for now. If you have any questions or comments for me, you can find me on Twitter @TheVolColonel

Have a Great Weekend and Go Big Orange

Your Vol Colonel'

Your comment on Rich Rod has me thinking. Isn't it interesting how Tennessee and Michigan have paralleled each other in the past 20 years. Just uncanny. I sure hope our spread HC works better than theirs in time. Butch Jones sure is recruiting like a mad man. That's for sure.

'Tony,

It's Homecoming weekend, the time when alums old and young return to campus to rekindle the good memories of college. Let's hope the football program starts doing its part again soon.

1. I've heard a number of people this week express their frustration by saying they are staying home Saturday and I completely understand. However, if you do that drop your tickets off at the Boys and Girls Club or Big Brothers Big Sisters and make some young person's day.

2. Tennessee needs to put the hammer down and end the competitive portion of the game expeditiously. The longer the front line guys play, the greater the risk of injuries this team can't afford with its upcoming schedule.

3. There are a number of upstart programs this weekend who face serious tests. I'm always fascinated to see how teams handle the bright glare that comes with surprising success.

Click to Clancy's Tavern & Whiskey House!
4. Alabama's resilience will be tested Saturday. Arkansas is a physical team that will have the advantage of a raucous home crowd.

5. This is the most nationally irrelevant Oklahoma-Texas game in some time. I halfway expect John Blake and John Mackovic to be on the sidelines coaching.

6. If both Mississippi schools find a way to come out on top, the SEC will officially be turned upside down. They'll be the only teams left with a chance of going undefeated.

7. For people around my age, this year's ALCS conjures up memories of great baseball past. I hope the series lives up to the standards of Earl Weaver and Whitey Herzog.

8. The two best organizations in the senior circuit face off in the NLCS. San Francisco and St. Louis are both testaments to the value of shrewd management.

9. The move by the Big Ten to guarantee four year scholarships for its athletes is another grandstand move by Jim Delaney's league. That said, it is also absolutely the right thing to do.

Tune in on the Basilio Broadcast Platforms and WLAF AM and FM today for Show Cause. Should be a fun time in the 1-3 block.

Go Vols
Keith'

Hatfield, you are so well versed in so much in our sports world that I'm not worthy.

I love the Young Guns! They remind me of the times back in the 90's when I was young fire breather. Young Gun Jon Reed deplores this Chattanooga game while I just want to enjoy a win over somebody. It's a matter of perspective I suppose. No right or wrong here, just perspective.

Jon Reed
'Reed’s Rants:

Is there anything worse for the fans than coming off of a bad loss and having to play a game against an opponent like Chattanooga? That’s no disrespect to Chattanooga, but this game will do nothing to alleviate the pain and disappointment from the flop against the team from the swamp. Best case scenario for the Vols is that they are getting to rest while their next opponent, Ole Miss, is coming off of games against Alabama and Texas A&M in consecutive weeks. If the Rebels lose as underdogs this Saturday, maybe that will deflate some of the energy of the Mississippi fans. Going on the road next week to an undefeated, top 3 team is scary.

If it wasn’t for bad luck, Tennessee wouldn’t have any luck. Gurley’s gone, and his Heisman has been hijacked. Treon Harris’s situation looks better once all the puzzle pieces of accusation and rumors became clearer. The timetable for both Gurley and Harris to return is up in the air.

Manziel was suspended for a half of a football game last year for something that seems to be close to what Gurley is accused of doing, and it appears that the case around Harris is not strong enough to bring about official charges. However, the fact remains that the two players responsible for defeating the Vols are both suspended right now.

Mississippi State is criminally overrated. Dak Prescott’s success this year has the Bulldogs in position for their biggest home game ever (?) as Auburn comes into town this weekend. Sure, the Bulldogs have looked good, but let’s not go crazy; they have only beaten a bad LSU team and a finesse A&M squad. They have been impressive, and they have my attention. Beat Auburn and they have my respect. I don’t think it happens though because Auburn is the best team in the country.

Do you prefer these Thursday night NFL games or your midseason Wednesday night MACtion in college football? Arian Foster, always the trail blazer that he is, came out and ripped the NFL for making teams play on three days of rest. It’s unreal how bad these games are, but yet the ratings are huge meaning that the money is huge meaning that we are going to keep getting Thursday night games. The Houston-Indianapolis game started out 24-0 but ended up being a really good game.

I’ve been pretty hard on Butch Jones and the coaching staff this week, and some of you agree while some of you think I’m an idiot and overreacting. After going back on Thursday and re-watching the entire Florida game again, I’m still mad because there was zero reason that the Vols should have lost that game. The offensive line was good enough to win, and the defense was definitely good enough to win. That said, the improvement on the field is obvious. Now, I just need to see some improvements on the sidelines.

My major take away from that game is that Tennessee’s offense still hasn’t found their identity. Believe it or not, the running game looked good in stretches. The problem is that when Tennessee began moving the ball with Hurd, Lane, and even Devrin Young, Bajakian would not stick with it. On the drive that Worley fumbled up 9-0 and the ensuing drive after Florida had cut it 9-7, the running game had success.

A couple of easy fixes that I am looking for in the UTC game are pass protection from the running back position and getting more of the quick hitting running back screens and sweeps to the wide side of the field. Against Florida, Jalen Hurd blocked the non-blitzing side on multiple occasions either because of a misread by him, a misread by Worley, or being dictated by scheme. Multiple times, especially in the red zone, the Vols dialed up a running back screen to the short side of the field allowing the boundaries to be an extra defender. That needs to get corrected.

'Tony,

I was listening to your conversation with Mike Huguenin on your show yesterday, and one of his comments really troubled me. I believe he said that Brett Bielema at Arkansas has "really made that team in his own image." That comment made me thing about Butch Jones, and how we continuously talk about how he is trying to make Tennessee, for better or for worse, have his identity that just doesn't seem to fit that well this season. Why do you think Bielema at Arkansas of all places is able to do that while Jones is unable to do that, especially considering that both coaches are in their second season? I mean I think one could make the argument that Bielema's turnaround is much more impressive than anything Butch Jones has done so far. Although I still think Jones is doing a good job and I'm behind him, using Arkansas as a foil through which to compare Tennessee makes the Vols under Jones not look that impressive.

By the way, your performance on Saturday's Fifth Quarter Fan Reaction should get you into the Knoxville Sports Hall of Fame. That was a brutal time to do a show, but you did it anyway as a service.

Thanks

Lucas in Blacksburg'

First of all Lucas, thanks for being there. You have choices and I'm honored that you're there. As for Jones/Bielema, I think it's a pretty simple explanation. Offensive lineman love mauling people in the running game while zone blocking is a real challenge to teach. If you talk to any O lineman they will tell you this. Beilema's Arkansas system with a hat on a hat, power football is easier to pick up. If you'll remember, Jim Cheney who was here and throwing the ball all over the yard is the OC there. Arkansas has better players to be able to run that system than the Vols do at this point in time. Nice pick up by you. Proves you are really listening. BTW, I don't think this is an indictment of Butch Jones as a coach. There just aren't enough pieces in Knoxville to effectively do what he wants to do.

Remember, as soon as the UT football game goes final tomorrow we will be live with you on the app, web stream. Please spread the word and let others know that there is a real living breathing alternative and it’s called the Smartway/Dalton Bearing Fifth Quarter/Fan Reaction. Download the app here! Jared (the redneck from Roanoke, VA) thought the Taylor Swift coverage would end with the Super Bowl, but this love story isn’t going anywhere. In a game that was four hours and 18 minutes (that’s a total of 15,480 seconds). Swift only appeared for around 55 seconds! 55 SECONDS from the moment the game kicked off to the overtime touchdown.

Missouri Game Preview

The Vols did what they were expected to do against UConn. There's not really much to say about that game. The game this Saturday in Columbia, Missouri will decide whether or not this season is a failure in my opinion. If they Vols lose, they are staring at 8-4 and probably the Gator Bowl. The Vols are coming back to Neyland Stadium and I am returning after a discretionary bye week. I'll be honest with you. This year it seems like I've been writing the same preview over and over because the formula to win has been the same pretty much every SEC game. I didn't want to sound like a broken record so I needed a bit of a break from that.

I'll start with some general observations..... [more]
