InsideTennessee.com Day on TB Show!

Tennessee released the depth chart for the season opener and the local kids have made good! Jacob Gilliam of Farragut beat out a guy that was penned in, not penciled in but penned in before spring ball. Gilliam, a walk on proves that hard work is still rewarded in this country. Football under Butch Jones is a meritocracy as it should be. Jashon Robertson wins the right guard spot. If James Franklin is still at Vandy, he's probably playing ball in Nashville this year. He can really play. This guy might be the most impressive freshmen on campus irrespective of position. Let that sink in for a second. And he was going to play at Vandy. Jeez. That's pretty sobering. I'll tell you this, Tennessee is glad James Franklin when to State College.

How about Pig Howard, overcoming an off-season of personal hardship to reemerge and win a starting job at wide receiver over a highly decorated Josh Malone? Didn't see that coming after the spring. Good for Howard. Hard work and competition never hurt anybody.

On the defensive side, kudos to Justin Coleman for holding off Michael Williams at corner. Sophomore Devaun Swafford held off ballyhooed freshmen Todd Kelly Jr at strong safety. Gotta hand it to guys who just don't surrender their spots to newcomers. Now, these battles are far from over but it's interesting nonetheless. The battles inside the battles will make this team and program much better in the long run. This is why not having depth not only hurts you currently but also in the future. These guys will get much better over the course of the year competing for time. Healthy competition.

Curt Maggitt? That guy is a true Volunteer. So many injury problems and he just keeps getting back up. You have to really love playing to have still be out there after all he's been through and I'm sure hoping he can stay healthy and have a profitable junior year.

Now. who's going to be the kicker? That's the million dollar question, isn't it? And whether it's Bullock or Medley will they have a decent season? We don't need a QB to be great just decent. Tennessee needs a field goal kicker not to be an eyesore.

Insidetennessee.com's Randy Moore writes a great piece on Mike Williams. You WILL see a lot of him this year. Book it! Link

'X', presented by Smoothie King, breaks down Tennessee's latest commitment.

'X' Says
ANALYSIS

Tennessee picked up another commitment over the weekend in interior offensive lineman Venzell Boulware from Fairburn, Georgia committed to Tennessee. Boulware stands 6’3” 290 lbs. and projects as a guard. He is 4 star prospect according to RIVALS. Boulware from Fairburn Georgia, former teammate of the Berry brothers, is a top 20 prospect in the state of Georgia.

Tennessee beat out schools like Florida, Ohio State, Auburn, Alabama and about 25 other programs for Boulware’s commitment. Think about that for a second? Tennessee beat out schools like Florida, Ohio State, Auburn, Alabama for Boulware…. That actually feels pretty good to write.

We keep it real here. Most of you are like me I suspect. I listen to Coach Jones’ post practice interviews. I remember a couple of weeks ago Coach Jones was noticeably dejected made a comment something to the effect, we recognize our weaknesses and we are just going to have to recruit our way out those. My guess is one of those deficiencies was the offense line. I say that because Vol Colonel and others who watch practice will tell you Tennessee may practice with 10 maybe 12 offensive lineman who go through drills on a day in and day out basis but only 6 or 7 are these kids are ready to play any meaningful snaps in a football game at this level.

On this offensive line, we have kids that have been in the program for 3 years and in some cases even 5 years yet a true freshman who is less than one week into taking classes in the fall semester is able to come in and elevate himself to first team offensive line… We also have an offensive tackle who was JUCO All American last season that has been competing for 9 months against a former walk- on senior. Yet, the JUCO All American hasn’t been able to beat the former walk on out for the starting spot.
We also have a kid who is a Guard and a pretty good one that is going to start at tackle because of our lack of game ready bodies at the tackle spot.

If Tennessee gets an offensive lineman dinged up, it could spell some real trouble. That is why right now it is so important to get Crowder and Wiseman, both suffering from injury, back to full speed this week.

The cliché is games are won and lost in the SEC in the trenches. It is very likely Tennessee’s success this season will be a function how what kind of consistency and performance the offensive line can give our quarterbacks.

Boulware truly can’t help us this season but he fills a huge need in this class. To be sure, Tennessee doesn’t have but a handful of spots left in the 2015 recruiting class, maybe 3 to 4. Spending one of the remaining spots tells you what they think about Boulware as a prospect as well as what they think about their depth in the offense line.

Getting ready to get it kicked into high gear. Stay tuned. I'll be tracking it here this fall for you.

'X'

How about X tipping the cap to Vol Colonel. TonyBasilio.com radio family right there. And yes, X is dead right. Tennessee is heading for some serious depth up front. It can't come soon enough.

Go To Pick 'Em

Jon Reed, joins me today and he's feeling pumped for the start of the season.

Jon Reed
“Surely we can win six or seven games.”

A lot has been said about the message and the timing of Fulmer’s answer regarding the forecast of the 2014 season for Tennessee that ran in the Chattanooga Times Free Press. The general consensus has been that it was ultimately harmless while also a little reckless to say.

It wasn’t a “I think they can win six or seven,” nor was it a careful coach-speak filled message about the roster being full of young guys facing an uphill battle against one of the nation’s toughest schedule. Fulmer did Butch Jones no favors by unofficially setting the expectations (maybe he read my post on this website???) for Team 117+1. And it didn’t stop there.

“If we get a couple of breaks, they can win eight or nine.”

Some call it a slight cheap shot at the current state of the program that once ran him off for not being good enough and a violation in the coaching fraternity, but Phillip Fulmer wasn’t fulfilling his duties of an ex-coach, he was acting in his new role of being a fan of the Volunteers.
How many of you have had the same exact discussion with your friends? There’s still that belief that this year is the year that things start to turn around.
It’s still Tennessee; surely they can win six or seven games, and if there’s any magic left in Neyland Stadium, it’s possible them boys can get to eight or nine wins. I mean, why not? It happens for other programs all the time. Tennessee’s due for some good fortune.

The passion of a Volunteer fan is peerless. It’s what keeps people going after the recent years that the Vols have been faced with, and it is the reason why a man who was fired from a job he cared so deeply about still cares year’s later.

We’re all just chasing that feeling that we got from the golden age of Tennessee football. For many, including Fulmer, it was the 1990s. Just like all of you reading this, Fulmer lived the passion. Every year is going to be THE year somehow, someway. The days of championship or bust are gone… for now, but certain goals are still expected to be met.

A lot of people were upset Fulmer said something like that. I would have been more upset with him if he went the opposite way and said the Vols were going to win 4 or 5 games. Then, the outrage would have been that Fulmer didn’t believe in Butch Jones and was saying that he was not a good enough coach to win the season’s swing games.
And what kind of fan would that have made him?

I say Viva Phillip Fulmer! Great to hear your voice coach and glad you care enough to follow it and comment on it. Personally I'm glad he put a prediction out there. Why not? He's got skin in the game. He's a UT grad. That place made changed his life in every way possible. Glad he's in good health and enjoying his family and other endeavors. I have zero problem with him saying what he did.

I run Vandy Joe's stuff here for comic relief. And what can I say.....the fan delivers....

Heeeeeeere's Vandy Joe!!!

'Hello Tony,

Read your blog today. Especially the Vol colonel's SEC east picks. Found them interesting. Think they're a little bit optimistic. Picking the orange 4th is a leap of faith & a big one at that. You yourself said they could lose as many as 8 games or as few as 4. My personal view is 7 based off of several factors which I enumerated to you before. The thing I found most comical was the statement in the Vanderbilt portion where he said UT had locked down the State. Well I think that statement as well as his picking abilities may be a little long in the tooth! If UT had the state locked down, how would they let folks like Van
Jefferson get away to Georgia today!!!

Oh, don't anyone tell me that "we didn't really want him!" That's a pile of crap & you & I both know it!

Bottom line folks overload their mouth with their
backside making statements such as that & I'm calling
out the colonel. Go carpetbag elsewhere!

UT, Vanderbilt nor anyone has this state locked down anymore. Truth be told if Alabama, LSU, Ohio State or any other big named program comes after a kid in this state odds are he's leaving UT behind because he wants to win & win national championships.

He may someday have that opportunity at UT but it ain't going to happen anytime soon(next 3 to 4 years) & everyone with any sense about them knows it. And I'll put to rest the idea that you or anyone else might think that I might think Vanderbilt might win one either. The likelihood is slim to none. Of course I didn't think Vanderbilt would win the baseball college world series this year either but they did. Honestly, they got all the breaks they could have hoped for in order to win it. So there, I'll call a spade, a spade.

Do I think Vanderbilt will beat UT this year? I can't say yet because I haven't seen how the players are going to react to Mason & how he's going to react during a game when it’s on the line. I will say this-- you & every other orange clad fan are just hoping upon hope that Vandy does fall flat on their faces because of what they've accomplished the past 2 years. What will you do if Vanderbilt did beat your Vols this season for a 3 straight time? That's a question you should be asking yourself. Cause it could happen & odds are right now that it's a 50 50 proposition from what I've seen & heard.

Get some truth about yourselves. What about you colonel? Doesn't appear that's the case this time.

Anchor Down!!!!

Vandy Joe'

Now, Vandy Joe is definitely a clown but does he have a point on the superpowers in college football poaching players out of the Volunteer State? When you look at Van Jefferson getting out, it seems Vandy Joe (as much as I hate to say it) has a point. Then again, you can't win em all on the recruiting trail. Guys are going to defect from the state borders. Phillip Fulmer during the glory years of the 90's didn't even get all the best players in the state to play here. So, why expect the same out of Butch Jones. And no Vandy Joe, Vandy isn't even a part of this conversation. Sorry, but nice try in attempting to coop UT's recruiting juice. I'm calling BS on you sir.

In closing...I would like to share a great jam with you! Alabama Shakes Hold on!! Don't tell me there isn't great music being made today! It's just not being played on the radio. This is Black Crows meets the Stones meets..... Love the guitar work here. Wow. Sweet and tasty!!! Link

Did you say 5 Days?

I thought that's what you said.....

We can now officially congratulate Caitlin Clark on breaking the record for the most points scored in women’s basketball!

Caitlin Clark is the biggest superstar in college basketball (men’s or women’s). That’s not just me being a fan, Caitlin Clark is HER! Caitlin scored 49 points on February 15th to pass Kelsey Plum’s NCAA record for the most career points in women’s college basketball..... [more]
It's a Love Story

Jared (the redneck from Roanoke, VA) thought the Taylor Swift coverage would end with the Super Bowl, but this love story isn’t going anywhere. In a game that was four hours and 18 minutes (that’s a total of 15,480 seconds). Swift only appeared for around 55 seconds! 55 SECONDS from the moment the game kicked off to the overtime touchdown.

Missouri Game Preview

The Vols did what they were expected to do against UConn. There's not really much to say about that game. The game this Saturday in Columbia, Missouri will decide whether or not this season is a failure in my opinion. If they Vols lose, they are staring at 8-4 and probably the Gator Bowl. Maybe Reliaquest..... [more]
Connecticut Game Preview

The Vols are coming back to Neyland Stadium and I am returning after a discretionary bye week. I'll be honest with you. This year it seems like I've been writing the same preview over and over because the formula to win has been the same pretty much every SEC game. I didn't want to sound like a broken record so I needed a bit of a break from that.

I'll start with some general observations..... [more]
