I had a couple of folks comment to me yesterday on Twitter that they don't understand why we keep talking about records and what's acceptable for the upcoming season. The answer is simple. My job is to facilitate conversation. At the end of the day when you've been through the shadow of the valley of Dooley, there are no easy answers to this stuff. We are after all arguing over whether a season of 5-7 or 7-5 connotes progress. Here's one thing I promise here and on the air. I'm going to tell you how I feel to the best of my ability. At the end of the day, this is all I can control.

Yesterday I was in discussion with Jon Reed on the air and said that if Tennessee threw up a 5-7 record this year, it would be OK with me considering the schedule and the state of the program. At the sponsor break, Reed said to me 'but I thought you said it was a guarantee that UT would beat Missouri and Florida this year?' Point well taken. I did say that I thought UT would get both of those teams this year in Knoxville, but it doesn't mean I'm dead level expecting it. I'm not. To me (and I know people hate hearing this) what you have this year is another year zero. And as they say in the hood, it is what it is. Don't you hate that saying. But what else can you say about this season. To quote Don 'The Magnificent' Muraco', 'what can else can you say? It's all been said.'

Look, Randy Moore from insidetennessee.com predicted 3 QB's were probably going to play this year before the season it over. And to this point none of these guys has proven a viable option at this level. Couple this with the reality that Tennessee will head into most games at a disadvantage on both lines of scrimmage and how could this year not be a complete dogfight for 500.

You could say, what about Mizzou and Auburn in 2013, who was expecting that out of them? Point well taken, however Tennessee has no Nick Marshall on this team. In fact, they don't even have a James Franklin. This is reality.

But I love the conversation because we are all pulling in the same direction. We all want to get back to where we belong. Still, magical thinking won't make it happen with any more alacrity.

Put it another way, this year is more about nuances than W&L's. Huh? What, you say?

I'll let Gene in Belle Meade explain what I'm getting at as he said he to me in an e-mail this morning much more eloquently than I'm capable of delivering this point.

'Tony B:

First of all let me say I really enjoy your work. As a member of the music industry I appreciate what you do and that you give real fans like me a fair say. Next time you get down here, I would love to meet you and show you around my recording studio.

Jon Reed is a smart young kid who will gain wisdom as times goes on. He's provocative and that's great. Here's what he is missing:

Raw W-L numbers for 2014 aren't what will drive the importance of the season. What will drive it will be how the season influences recruiting for 2015, 16 and beyond, and to a lesser extent, fan attitude.

Having said the above, not making a bowl would be a setback. It would also probably mean you lost to Vandy for the third time in a row, which hasn't happened since Moses walked the Earth and would give Derek Mason his sea legs in Middle Tennessee. (If you don't think Middle Tennessee is the hottest new area of recruiting, you're not paying attention to the performance of key UT freshmen so far in camp). Losing to Vandy would destabilize both recruiting and fan support. Must be avoided. Even better, clean their clock in the Music City and put the universe back in its proper order.

Josh Dobbs' performance in preseason camp sends warning signals for 2015. If you can't find a fifth-year senior who's immediately eligible, you're exposed big-time at the position for the '15 season. God bless Peterman for hanging in there. If Dobbs transfers, you're down to Dormady, Peterman and Jauan Jennings and it's a year where you have Oklahoma, Georgia and South Carolina at your place, plus a roster teeming with talent at the other position groups.
The Butch Jones Era is not about 2014. What 2014 IS about is validating his coaching, and the coaching of his staff, and keeping this recruiting train rolling down the tracks. Can't mismanage a game like last year's Florida game. Tennessee Football is not about going 7-5. It's about climbing out of the worst hole since the late 1970s and putting the program back to the glory days.

Having said all of this, it wouldn't shock me if we have a bad upset loss early like Utah St, but shock the world with a win or near-miss win at Oklahoma or play Alabama off their feet here. No season ever goes the way we think it will. You tell me Hurd and the OL stays healthy, I say we spring some surprises. This season could be like a great music. It will take you right where you think it's not going. Get it?

Go Big Orange!

Gene

Gene: I'm not worthy. You know I love music! And I really love your eloquence in presenting this today. Great stuff. Terrific job by you!

Christian Lundy continues to bring 5 star stuff to us here at Tonybasilio.com. Here are his practice report/UT notes.

Christian Lundy
'Tennessee returned to the practice field on Tuesday for a mid-afternoon practice at Haslam Field.

After their customary stretching period they jumped right in to a full team period. It was the most 11 on 11 work we've been able to see so far in camp. Changes from yesterday included Devrin Young getting some situational first team work at running back in place of Jalen Hurd and Pig Howard sliding in at receiver in place of Josh Smith. Dontavius Blair also got his first work with the first unit today, as Jacob Gilliam didn't participate in the team period.

The full first team offense on Tuesday looked to be:

QB Justin Worley
RB Devrin Young
WR Marquez North
WR Johnathon Johnson
WR Pig Howard
TE Ethan Wolf
LT Dontavius Blair
LG Marcus Jackson
C Kyler Kerbyson
RG Jashon Robertson
RT Brett Kendrick

Gilliam slid in at right tackle during some non-contact work. Mack Crowder and Dylan Wiesman continue to nurse injuries, which has shifted Kerbyson to center for the time being. Coleman Thomas continues to work with the second unit at right tackle.

All three quarterbacks had solid practices on Tuesday. Nathan Peterman continues to push Justin Worley, as the Vols have not yet named a starter at the position. Josh Dobbs may have had his best day of camp during the workout, doing a nice job throwing the ball in both the team work and individual drill work. Dobbs did a nice job of eliminating mistakes while also showing off his legs on a couple of quarterback keepers, one of which he scored on.

Tennessee continues to work to shore up the defensive line. With Curt Maggitt absent from the practice field again on Tuesday, freshman Derek Barnett saw some first team reps. Barnett has been praised heavily by Jones and has been arguably the most impressive newcomer. He worked opposite Corey Vereen at defensive end. Barnett wasn't the only freshman that got first team work though, as Dillon Bates worked with the first team at the will linebacker position, opposite A.J. Johnson. Jalen Reeves-Maybin, who's occupied that spot throughout most of camp, has been hampered by an injury and wore a green non-contact jersey on Tuesday.

Elsewhere, Butch Jones has seemingly taken a special interest in working to motivate and improve freshman Elliott Berry. Jones is often heard critiquing and trying to get Berry going over the loud speaker. During drill work on Tuesday, Jones sprinted from the offensive practice field to the defensive practice field to further instruct the versatile Berry.

The Vols will return to the practice field on Wednesday for a closed to the media practice.

Thanks for reading....

Go Braves! Please win one soon!

'The madness from the weekend carried right on over into the past couple of day. It's been like a full moon night the last week in sports.

1. The video that has surfaced of Diego Maradona slapping around a paparazzi is great stuff. On field greatness eventually wanes, but crazy is forever.

2. Drake receiving a 25K for attempting to recruit Kevin Durant to Toronto is another perfect example of the NBA being shortsighted. Letting that story, along with the Durant back home to DC rumors, could have created The Decision III.

3. Now that he has gotten a clean bill of health, one has to wonder if Justin Verlander simply isn't the pitcher he once was. It'll be interesting to see how he adjusts to no longer being able to simply overpower hitters.

4. It is tough to see Manny Machado go down with another knee injury. He's a true throwback and he was just beginning to hit his stride.

5. The Flat Earth Society that runs the NCAA would have you believe college athletics are just a quaint little sidelight. That rhetoric is Chuckle Hut quality stuff when events like Maryland paying 31 million dollars to close
their exit from the ACC come across the wire.

Click to Clancy's Tavern & Whiskey House!
6. If you missed Paul Heyman's work on the microphone during Monday's edition of Raw, you owe it to yourself to take a look. It was comparable to watching Astaire dance or Clapton play the guitar.

7. The merciful end of the Donald Sterling nonsense is finally here. Now, we'll see if Steve Ballmer can be the owner to push the Clippers over the top.

8. Cavaliers at Heat on Christmas Day.. entirely predictable. It was also the absolute correct call.

9. Nathan Peterman is proving he is resilient and competitive. I know of next to no one who thought he'd ever be heard from again in any meaningful way after the Florida game last season.

Mournful goodbyes to Robin Williams and Lauren Bacall. Williams walked between the worlds of absurd comedy and gripping drama like few others. Bacall was a stunning combination of beauty and brass. She was truly one of a kind.

See you guys Friday for Show Cause.

Keith'

We can now officially congratulate Caitlin Clark on breaking the record for the most points scored in women’s basketball!

Caitlin Clark is the biggest superstar in college basketball (men’s or women’s). That’s not just me being a fan, Caitlin Clark is HER! Caitlin scored 49 points on February 15th to pass Kelsey Plum’s NCAA record for the most career points in women’s college basketball..... [more]
It's a Love Story

Jared (the redneck from Roanoke, VA) thought the Taylor Swift coverage would end with the Super Bowl, but this love story isn’t going anywhere. In a game that was four hours and 18 minutes (that’s a total of 15,480 seconds). Swift only appeared for around 55 seconds! 55 SECONDS from the moment the game kicked off to the overtime touchdown.

Missouri Game Preview

The Vols did what they were expected to do against UConn. There's not really much to say about that game. The game this Saturday in Columbia, Missouri will decide whether or not this season is a failure in my opinion. If they Vols lose, they are staring at 8-4 and probably the Gator Bowl. Maybe Reliaquest..... [more]
Connecticut Game Preview

The Vols are coming back to Neyland Stadium and I am returning after a discretionary bye week. I'll be honest with you. This year it seems like I've been writing the same preview over and over because the formula to win has been the same pretty much every SEC game. I didn't want to sound like a broken record so I needed a bit of a break from that.

I'll start with some general observations..... [more]
