Bummer last night as lightening forced the Vols inside for their second two a day practice. Link

We'll discuss the resurgence of Nathan Peterman with Randy Moore of insidetennessee.com. Uh oh, this might turn into a real race right before our very eyes. Link

Christian Lundy delivers another stellar practice update after a rare two a day workout for the Vols.

'The Vols went through two more practices on Monday. The first came at 9 a.m. The second at 6:50 p.m.

The big news out of the morning practice was Butch Jones' declaration that he is close to naming a starting quarterback and could do so as soon as this week. It has long been assumed that Justin Worley will be the guy, but Nathan Peterman isn't going away quietly. Peterman put together two more solid practices on Monday after apparently having a solid scrimmage on Saturday as well. I would still bet on Worley being the guy against Utah State, but you have to admire Peterman's fight.

Worley continued to take the first team reps during Monday's practice, just as he did during the scrimmage on Saturday. Peterman continued to work with the second unit. Josh Dobbs seems to be the odd man out at this point. All three quarterbacks did throw the ball pretty well during Monday morning's workout. Dobbs continues to have some issues with overthrowing receivers though, while Worley is undershooting his target at times.

As I spoke about on the show yesterday, wide receiver Johnathon Johnson has impressed me throughout camp. He is a very solid and dependable presence and was rewarded on Monday as he got some work with the first unit. Marquez North and Josh Smith were the other receivers working with the first unit. Johnson has flown under the radar to this point, but he is another valuable piece of what's shaping up to be an extremely deep receiving corps. North, Smith, Johnson, Pig Howard, Von Pearson and Jason Croom are all good enough to play at this level along with newcomers Josh Malone and Vic Wharton. North seems to be the one constant at the position though and in my opinion is poised to have a breakout season as the team's primary target.

The Vols were working through some injuries on Monday as well. Offensive linemen Mack Crowder and Dylan Wiesman both missed practice, as did reserve tight end Woody Quinn. Crowder's absence forced the Vols to move Kyler Kerbyson to center (Wiesman is the Vols' backup center when healthy). As a result, freshman Jashon Robertson got some first team reps at Kerbyson's usual right guard position. Redshirt freshman Brett Kendrick also saw some action with the first team on Monday morning.

Junior defensive end Curt Maggitt missed practice as well. Maggitt was seen wearing a walking boot on his right foot in a picture tweeted out by Butch Jones on Monday.

Thanks & Go Braves!

Christian'

Jon Reed returns for his Tuesday blast. He's not backing down after last week. He will be live on the air with me today if you would care to respond.

'The beautiful thing about the Internet is the opportunity for everyone to get an equal say. I love it. I also love the passion that people still have for Tennessee athletics. I appreciate authenticity, and I will never say or write something on the TonyBasilio.com or say anything on his Network that isn’t 100% how I feel. I’m not looking to “troll” or stir the pot. I am passionate in my opinions, but I respect everyone’s right to have their own.

But I must admit: I was a little surprised at how many people disagreed with me saying that Tennessee’s goal for Team 117+1 should be 7-5 or bust. Ironically, I was buying into Butch Jones and his staff a little too much while people were saying that I was bashing him.

I understand the concerns about replacing the entire starting defensive line. I also watched that defensive line be virtually nonexistent during certain stretches in 2013. Granted, losing an experienced offensive line is going to hurt, especially in the SEC. However, if we’re being completely honest, we were all a little underwhelmed watching a unit as talented and (over)hyped as the 2013 Offensive Line fail to really have any signature moments in any meaningful games. Still, it is going to be hard for the 2014 edition to not take a sizeable step back.

And that’s without mentioning the quarterback position that appears to be in the same bad shape it was at this time last year. (Get ready for the Nathan Peterman hype train to get back rolling). A lot of smart football people would say that those three units (the OL, DL, and QB) are the three most important. I get it.

I referenced Steve Spurrier and Nick Saban’s success in their first two years at Alabama and South Carolina as a measuring stick for year 2 for Butch Jones and staff (a couple of you correctly pointed out Bama lost at home to Louisiana Monroe and Spurrier’s years 3-6 weren’t very good, but let’s focus on Year 2, people). Both the Tide and Gamecocks had a lower average recruiting ranking in the four year period leading into those coaches’ second year than Tennessee and Butch Jones has.
People were quick to point out two things: those Vols classes had some attrition, and OMG THE STRENGTH OF SCHEDULES!!!!!!

As far as the attrition goes, okay, of the thirty or so commits no longer on the team, how many of those are difference makers? I honestly don’t know, but I could be missing a stud that left the program.

The strength of schedule issue is trickier. Tennessee definitely gets credit (and a pass) for the road games to Oregon and Oklahoma. As much of an organized slaughter as they seem to be, the message that Tennessee will play anyone, anywhere is delivered, and I believe players do like that. As much as perception would help with finishing 6-6 with bought wins and a bowl game, the long term benefits are greater from playing these road games.

Let’s look at the top 12 hardest schedules in the country:

• Arkansas
• Virginia
• Tennessee
• Notre Dame
• Texas A&M
• Kentucky
• Iowa State
• Syracuse
• Rutgers
• Wake Forest
• Utah
• West Virginia

How many of those eleven (excluding Notre Dame) teams went over .500 in conference play last year? ZERO. In fact, only Syracuse and Texas A&M were able to win more than two conference games, and they, and Notre Dame, were the only three teams to finish with more wins than losses.

Your yearly schedule is going to look a lot harder every year if you have given five or six teams wins instead of losses. It’s the SEC. Every year is going to be tough schedule-wise, especially for Tennessee since most of you want to protect the sacred Alabama matchup.

A lot of people that have bought into Butch Jones have already conceded the road games to South Carolina, Georgia, and Ole Miss. It’s fair to do so as Tennessee will be at least 8 point underdogs in all three, but I still expect one of those to go down to the wire and be there for the taking. My goal of 7-5 takes that into account.

The Vols can get there by beating Missouri and Florida at home and only winning one road game at Vanderbilt. If you don’t think Tennessee should realistically aim for that as the benchmark for their season, I’m not sure why everyone is so sold on Butch Jones. It’s wrong to expect home wins over Gary Pinkel and Will Muschamp?

I’m not backing down. I think Butch Jones and the group of talented young players can ride the electric Neyland Stadium atmosphere (and I’m including the Tennessee fan takeover in Nashville) and get to seven wins.

Let me know what you think! I’m on twitter @jon__reed (two underscores). If you think I’m an idiot, that’s okay, too. Just know that I’m real. Where a lot of locals will carry the water of the program to protect their working relationships, I won’t.

Humbling day for former Vol great Justin Hunter. Titans are trying to get his attention. Link

Great job by the callers and Matt Nelson in discussing the Tony Stewart situation. I learned an awful lot about the way sprint cars operate. That was time very well spent in yesterday's hour #2.

Romogi Huma and his organization have the NCAA completely on the run. Huma may one day be seen by history as a Marin Miller of collegiate athletes. There's a lot wrong with the system indeed. If you missed it, you can listen here, and it would be well worth your time. Mind boggling arrogance from the NCAA. They deserve everything coming their way. Huma made a wonderful point when he talked about how D-II schools are able to pay full tuition for their student athletes and field teams in all sports yet aren't in it for a money grab. Interesting point he brings up since ALL pro NCAA folks would have you believe that any adjustment to the deal toward college football and basketball players would be at the peril of other sports. Give that a listen. You will be glad you did for sure.

No Tiger Woods? No problem for PGA Championship. Up 36% over last year! It deserved it! Great tournament.Link

Todd Bridges (of Different Strokes fame) called Williams selfish last night over his suicide. That's a rather simplistic view from someone obviously not familiar with the twisted nature of depression. If you feel suicidal and you're reading this, reach out. Reach out to me. Reach out to someone you love and trust and share what's going on with you. I promise you that if you lean on others in your time of need, you will feel stronger. I also promise you that I would never judge you. It doesn't matter how much of a mess of things you've made in your life. Where's there's life there's hope. And where there's hope, opportunity for a new day and a new way. In the meantime, folks like Bridges miss the point. Link

Did you know that Robin Williams and Christopher Reeve were roommates at Juilliard? Link

If you watched the Braves last night you no doubt noticed the Braves wearing the Pete patch on their uniform. It’s to commemorate the passing of longtime Brave broadcaster Pete Van Wieren who passed away last week at the age of 69. I love Van Wieren. Listening to him and Don Sutton was a guilty pleasure of watching the Braves during the glory years. RIP Pete Van Wieren. Link

It's a Love Story

Jared (the redneck from Roanoke, VA) thought the Taylor Swift coverage would end with the Super Bowl, but this love story isn’t going anywhere. In a game that was four hours and 18 minutes (that’s a total of 15,480 seconds). Swift only appeared for around 55 seconds! 55 SECONDS from the moment the game kicked off to the overtime touchdown.

Missouri Game Preview

The Vols did what they were expected to do against UConn. There's not really much to say about that game. The game this Saturday in Columbia, Missouri will decide whether or not this season is a failure in my opinion. If they Vols lose, they are staring at 8-4 and probably the Gator Bowl. Maybe Reliaquest..... [more]
Connecticut Game Preview

The Vols are coming back to Neyland Stadium and I am returning after a discretionary bye week. I'll be honest with you. This year it seems like I've been writing the same preview over and over because the formula to win has been the same pretty much every SEC game. I didn't want to sound like a broken record so I needed a bit of a break from that.

I'll start with some general observations..... [more]
