UT-Martin at Tennessee Game Preview
(6p, Pay-Per-View)
Posted: Saturday, September 4th, 2010, 2:06 PM • Permalink
Yeah, you read that correctly, “HAPPY BIRTHDAY!” This season marks the rebirth of the UT football program under new daddy Derek Dooley. And, like a newborn, the Vols will have to learn to crawl before they walk. Good thing we’re starting the season against a stuffed animal.

Again, I know I promised stats and breakdown, but even if I had had time to get them together, it wouldn’t really matter. ‘Cause, let’s be realistic here, the only stat that matters today is the number of Vols injured during the game. I’m hoping for a big goose egg.

My prediction:

UT-Martin 13, The Real UT 48

More stuff:

- Tauren Poole breaks a long (20+ yard) TD run on his way to 130+ yards and 2 TDs on 15-18 carries. Dooley doesn’t want to risk injuries, so Poole comes out early in the 3rd quarter.
- Matt Simms plays admirably (175 yards, 2 TD, 0 INT) and stays in the game until midway through the fourth quarter, when Tyler Bray takes over to hand off to David Oku and Toney Williams. One of Simms’ TD passes goes to Luke Stocker.
- Daniel Lincoln is 2/2 on FGs, both under 40 yards.
- Cunningham’s “stronger” (than Mike Palardy) leg disappoints on kickoffs, getting only one into the endzone. His two punts average 41 yards.
- There will be a defensive/special teams TD.
- Justin Wilcox’s tendency to keep the defense “vanilla” and not tip his hand to the Oregon Ducks (who come to town next week) leads to a couple of promising Sky Hawk drives that both end in FGs. Bend, but don’t break, baby!
- UT-Martin’s only TD comes late in the 4th quarter against various scrubs and potatoes.
- All in all, Vol fans come away from the game feeling good but still unsure of what the team has in light of the competition.
