FREE THOUGHT FRIDAY:

AFTER FURTHER REVIEW:
During a cameo appearance on the Wednesday edition of the Tony Basilio Show with TB and the good Doctor Sean Sinclair I was posed the question if Tony’s scenario season posted on an early-week blog where the Vols lose @Georgia and to Alabama, defeat Oklahoma in the Sugar Bowl finishing 11-2 would be acceptable even though Tennessee fails to make the SECCG? I answered in the affirmative then from nowhere heard my own voice say that I would prefer that to winning the East, losing big in Atlanta as Missouri did twice and being jettisoned to a lesser bowl. Tony and Sean -likely along with most of the listening audience- were appalled. AFTER FURTHER REVIEW (in the age of replay-adnauseam) I would like to have that one back. Though I believe Tony’s season would result in a higher ranking both he and Sinco are correct that you can’t win it if you’re not in it and a trip to Atlanta should be this season’s major goal. Here is how I would rank my desires for this season regardless of how realistic they are:

1-NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP: Very few living Vol fans have seen the Big Orange win two National Championships. I would love to be a part of that roll call

2-PLAYOFF GAME APPEARANCE: I will not list an SEC Championship since for us it is implied by making footballs version of the Final-4

3-WIN THE EASTERN DIVISION: This is the next step in our ascension and is a realistic expectation for 2016

4-PLAY IN A NEW YEAR’S 6 BOWL GAME: The new playground for Top-10 caliber programs knocking on the door of the playoffs

So there you go Tony. You’ve been begging for someone -anyone- to walk something back for months. I just did. I guess I need to limit my Basilio radio appearances to the full nine inning affairs. I’m apparently just not pinch-hitter material.

BUCKET LIST: With the Master’s upon us with its tradition, beauty and magnetic fan appeal, Tony asked about listener’s sports bucket lists. I have been really blessed to have experienced most live events that I felt were personally must see. I’ve attended a Tennessee Football National Championship Game appearance and watched them win a classic in Notre Dame Stadium; saw the Yankees play a World Series Game (Game 5, 2001); viewed baseball games at Wrigley Field, Fenway Park and old Yankee Stadium; and watched the Colts win -and lose- several playoff games. Since I’m not an NBA fan, view soccer only when the US is playing a World Cup match, enjoy golf in short stretches from the recliner only and wouldn’t attend the Super Bowl if it were played in Lenoir City there is not a whole lot left that I deem “must see in person”. If forced to have a bucket list however these items would likely top it:

TENNESSEE PLAY IN THE SUGAR BOWL: I know it seems strange that I have yet to make this happen. I was too young to attend without an adult in 1971, stayed home to watch it with my Dad in 86 and for whatever reason missed the 91 edition as well. I have seen the Vols play in the Orange, Fiesta, and Cotton Bowls and watched a regular season game versus UCLA in the Rose Bowl in 1997 but have never seen them in the New Year’s Day event most closely associated with the SEC. While it may no longer be the symbol of league superiority it once was I would still like to see the Vols play in New Orleans

"MEN VOLS" PLAY IN A FINAL-4: Don’t blame me if this one is never checked off

COLTS IN AN AFC TITLE GAME IN INDIANAPOLIS: Indy is an easy trip, a great town and the people are terrific. I’ve passed up a couple of chances after opting to invest in earlier rounds. I will not pass up the next opportunity

ARMY-NAVY FOOTBALL GAME: Every college football fan should experience the tradition and pageantry of this classic.

COLLEGE WORLD SERIES:
My Brother Ron was stationed in Omaha for a number of years and frequently told Freddie and I that we need to check out this event. Ron was extremely wise so I’m certain he would now counsel us not to wait for Tennessee to qualify before making the trip.

EARLY BASEBALL THOUGHTS

MOMMA RULES AND BARNEY FIFE UMPS: The feminization of America is now fully ensconced in America’s pastime. I thought it was a reach to change the rules regarding catcher/runner rights at the plate but that one is much more understandable then the new knee- jerk regulations regarding base runner etiquette around second base. The overreaction to Chase Utley’s brutal takeout slide that broke Ruben Tejada’s leg in last season’s NLDS resulted in slide rules that border on Upward Baseball. Don’t get me wrong I’m all for player safety but dramatic changes based on one ugly result among thousands-and-thousands of slides makes it look as if player’s Mothers have staged a hostile takeover of the MLB Rules Committee. What makes it even more ridiculous is that rules have always been in place that give umpires the authority to call both runners out when a slide is deemed to be interference.

In Tuesday’s Toronto-Tampa Bay game the fallacy of the rule came into full-focus when Jose Bautista and Edwin Encarnacion were both ruled out when Joey Bats reached out a hand and lightly touched the Rays’ Logan Forseythe’s leg while sliding into second. Forseythe’s throw to first sailed seemingly allowing the tying and go-ahead runs to score in the top of the 9th. After a review however both were ruled out and the game ended with the Rays “earning” a 3-2 victory. The light tap in no-way altered the throw and there was absolutely no chance of Forsythe being injured on the play. The umpires were either trying to assure that players get fully acclimated early or went full, letter of the law, Barney Fife. Let’s hope from this point forward it will be enforced more in tune with the spirit of the rule rather than how “little Johnny’s” Momma thinks it should.

UMPS STILL IN SPRING TRAINING? The Yankees were also the victims of a questionable interpretation of a rule when Carlos Correa blatantly violated the runner’s lane rule by staying in fair territory in the grass between home and first on a late-inning squibber. Delin Batances’ throw sailed into right field allowing the go-ahead run to score. Joe Girardi played the game under protest which appeared to incense the home plate umpire to the point that he called an obvious third strike wide allowing Luis Valbuena a second opportunity to deliver an insurance two-run double. Unlike the scenario I complained of above if the runner’s lane is not properly enforced it will encourage pitchers to drill baserunners in the back to assure the proper call is made which will cause injuries rather than prevent them. If I’m honest however I do not believe Correa’s chosen path caused Betances to make an errant throw. That happened because….

FLAT-AWFUL: …for some reason the guys paid handsomely to throw the baseball with pinpoint accuracy are the last guys you want throwing to bases. In the stunning instances when Mariano Rivera blew a save an errant throw -by him- almost always played into the result. I don’t know if it’s because they are unaccustomed to throwing off of flat ground, have no rhythm when not winding up or delivering from the stretch or are confused because infielders don’t flash signs. Whatever the culprit most are actually better hitters than they are at throwing anyone out on the base paths. To me it’s one of baseball’s great mysteries.

EARLY SUPERLATIVES:

-Astro superstar-in-the-making SS Carlos Correa hit three homers in the first two games one of which was a 460 ft.+ bomb off the restaurant in center field at Yankee Stadium

-Rockies rookie SS Trevor Story became the first player in MLB history to homer in his first three big league games

-Robinson Cano (don’t-cha-know) followed up a bounce-back second half of the 2015 season with 4 bombs in his first three games in 2016.

-Aces Clayton Kershaw, David Price, Jake Arrieta and Chris Sale all looked in mid-season form.

FINAL FRIDAY THOUGHT: Pay no attention to the momentary cold snap. Major League Baseball and the Masters are upon us which means winter is drawing its final breath

FINAL-FINAL FRIDAY THOUGHT: RIP Merle Haggard. If I could sing I would want to do it like you did. LINK

We can now officially congratulate Caitlin Clark on breaking the record for the most points scored in women’s basketball!

It's a Love Story

Jared (the redneck from Roanoke, VA) thought the Taylor Swift coverage would end with the Super Bowl, but this love story isn’t going anywhere. In a game that was four hours and 18 minutes (that’s a total of 15,480 seconds). Swift only appeared for around 55 seconds! 55 SECONDS from the moment the game kicked off to the overtime touchdown.

Missouri Game Preview

The Vols did what they were expected to do against UConn. There's not really much to say about that game. The game this Saturday in Columbia, Missouri will decide whether or not this season is a failure in my opinion. If they Vols lose, they are staring at 8-4 and probably the Gator Bowl. Maybe Reliaquest..... [more]
Connecticut Game Preview

The Vols are coming back to Neyland Stadium and I am returning after a discretionary bye week. I'll be honest with you. This year it seems like I've been writing the same preview over and over because the formula to win has been the same pretty much every SEC game. I didn't want to sound like a broken record so I needed a bit of a break from that.

I'll start with some general observations..... [more]
