VOLS INFLICT NEW LEVEL OF PAIN ON FANBASE
ONE WEEK TO HEAL

SINCE WE LAST SPOKE: 9-17-15

SORRY TO LEAVE YOU HANGING
-Due to a commitment made to friends and teammates prior to understanding that the Senior Softball National Tournament would be played the same weekend as the Oklahoma game I was only able to listen to/view the latter stages of the 2nd quarter live. I was getting frequent updates from a friend following the game and was bitterly disappointed to learn the Vols had blown an opportunity to get a quality non-conference win –at home no less- versus a traditional power. As bad as I was hurting I can’t imagine the deflation the rest of Vol Nation felt after living the nightmare in real time. I just finished watching the replay and might as well have let a mule kick me in the privates

BIG ORANGE REARVIEW MIRROR:

-It had been my contention since the loss in Norman that the return match in Neyland would signal the Vols return to National relevance. I’m still not sure how it failed to materialize

-After watching the Vols defense versus Bowling Green I certainly didn’t think it would take two overtime TDs for Oklahoma to get into the 30s. Despite the defense’s inability to get crucial stops they are the least culpable for the stinging loss. That dubious honor belongs to the offense and the coaching staff

-I’m not sure which is more ridiculous; leaving Jalen Hurd on the sideline while Alvin Kamara ran between the tackles on 3rd and goal from the one or leaving Hurd on the sideline while you kick a damn FG on 4th

-It’s time for our passing game to live up to its enormous potential. For that to happen however the offensive line must improve protection, Josh Dobbs must improve his accuracy and at least one of our receivers has to become a demand-the-ball stud that they have the potential to be

-I sure hope the Florida game doesn’t come down to an Aaron Medley FG of beyond 40 yards. A scarier thought is I don’t think Medley wants that to occur either.

-Despite the palpable pain of the loss there is no denying that the program is making positive strides. I just hope I live long enough to see the baby steps turn to leaps.

BEANO-RHYTHMS Players and coaches have to -as Butch Jones says- “snap and clear”. As a fan however I’m more likely to “clearly snap”. Therefore each week I will take just a second to describe what the results of the previous game have done to my Big Orange outlook:

-The most sobering numbers in the aftermath of the latest disappointment? That the program is 2-29 versus ranked opponents in the Post-Fulmer era (not including Phil’s 0-4 in 2008) and the man tasked with directing us through the malaise is now 1-17 (per ESPN) in the same scenario in his career. The huge question is can you direct others to a level that you have yet to achieve?

Beano-Rhythm Status: Heart Broken and Shaken: I’ve felt since the unveiling of the 2015 schedule that the Vols needed a victory over Oklahoma to bolster their confidence to the level that it takes to reverse history in Gainesville.

WHAT WE LEARNED IN WEEK 2

NATION:

SPARTY MAY BE THE VOLS of THE 90s Mark Dantonio (77-31 in 8+ seasons in East Lansing) has done a remarkable job turning perennial Big-10 afterthought Michigan State into a solid nationally respected program. The Spartans have won at least 11 games four of the past five seasons and have won two of the last four conference titles. The problem now is where they are slotted in terms of divisional play. The conference realignment started last season placed them in the East with Ohio State who seems poised to go on a Florida-in-the-90s-SEC-like run that will likely render whatever accomplishments the Spartans deliver less than playoff-worthy. Not that there is anything wrong with double-digit win seasons and New Year’s Day Bowl appearances but as those of us who lived through it know there is something terribly unfulfilling about a race with one hurdle that you just can’t clear.

LUCK OF THE IRISH… IN GAME RESULTS ONLY: Notre Dame stands at 2-0 after Saturday’s four leaf clover cliff-hanger win over Virginia. The Irish saw backup QB DeShone Kizer throw a 39 yard TD pass with only 12 seconds remaining to beat Virginia. Great outcome but the problem is Kizer is now the full time guy as starter Mailk Zaire was lost for the season to injury just as starting RB Tarean Folston was against Texas last week. Notre Dame can always hope that Kizer reacts as positively to the promotion as Folston’s replacement C.J Prosise who torched the Cavs for 155 yards and a TD on the ground.

SEC:

ANDY KENNEDY WOULD TAKE IT: It may not quite be like January Saturday nights at the Tad Pad but the Ole Miss Rebels have lit up the Vaught-Hemingway scoreboard to the tune of 74.5 ppg in their first two outings. Dropping a 76 spot on UT-Martin isn’t stop-the-presses type news but following that up with 73 versus Fresno State is at least an attention-grabber. Rumored bad-boy Chad Kelly has thrown it 40 times, completing 75% for 557 yards and 6 TDs and has sat enough to allow Ryan Buchanon and DeVante Kincaide to combine for 25-159-3. The Rebels have also seen three players (Kelly, Eugene Brazley, Jaylen Walton) rush for two TDs each as the team averages 276.5 ypg on the ground while throwing for 358. The basketball-like efficiency is probably about to come to a screeching halt however. An angry Alabama team waits in Tuscaloosa and they aren’t known for allowing the uncontested layups the Rebs have been shooting to date.

JEREMY JOHNSON AIN’T CARDALE JONES: I thought Jeremy Johnson was receiving too high praise for so little history prior to the start of the 2015 campaign. Going totally out of character, I was right. Johnson entered the season with only one start (Arkansas-2014), 38 passes and 3 TDs under his belt yet was hailed as the second coming of Dak Prescott. I truly believe that most of the so-far outlandish projections were fueled by Cardale Jones’ out-of-nowhere success for Ohio State at the end of the 2014 season. At 6-2, 240 Johnson is almost as physically imposing as Jones (6-5, 250) and I believe the thought process was if Cardale can light up Alabama so can Johnson. By the time the Tigers get to Alabama maybe he will. Then again if he continues along his current path there’s a better chance he will be where Jones was this time last season ... as in 3rd string.

NEVER TAKE A WIN OVER THE MAC FOR GRANTED: At least one SEC team has learned what many Big-10 teams have learned in the past; quality MAC teams are no gimme early in the season. Arkansas saw the emergency brake at least temporarily applied to their runaway expectations as Toledo allowed only five second half points and escaped Little Rock with a 16-12 shocker. The Rockets held the Hogs vaunted rushing attack to 103 yards on 31 carries and somehow Brandon Allen slung it around 53 times for 412 yards without throwing a TD. I would say “live like a Big-10 team die like a Big-10 team” but when you toss it over a half-a-hundred times I guess that wouldn’t be appropriate.

BUTCH JONES CHEAP SHOT ALERT: Hey Coach Jones! This is how you handle a post-game press conference after a debacle such as Saturday:

''I'm embarrassed for our fans and the people that traveled today - all the people here in Little Rock that this game means a lot to,'' Arkansas coach Bret Bielema said. ''It means a lot to us, and to not play well here for the second year in a row is very frustrating and something that I know that we are going to have to correct.''

WHAT WE WILL LEARN IN WEEK 3:

HOW THE MIGHTY HAVE FALLEN SINCE 1984: Remember January 1st 1984? Tom Osborne’s #1 Ranked, Big-8 Champion Nebraska Cornhuskers versus Howard Schnellenberger’s #5 upstart, Independent, Miami Hurricanes. One of the most memorable Orange Bowl Games of all time with Osborne eschewing an extra point attempt that would have tied the game -and almost assuredly delivered a National Championship- for a two point try for the win. It was a clash of styles and cultures that captured the attention of America. Quite a contrast to Saturday’s matchup between the same two schools, in the same city, now also-rans, coached by Mike Riley and Al Golden and for some reason representing the ACC and Big-10. This is progress?

WHO’S THE TOP TIGER? Auburn and LSU thought by many to be top-tier SEC West squads coming into the 2015 campaign will meet Saturday in Baton Rouge after both earned closer than expected victories last Saturday. The Bayou variety of Tigers have won the last seven played in Baton Rouge and the home team has won 13 of the last 15 meetings. If those trends hold true LSU will have a very early 2-0 record within the division and have established themselves as the top contender to challenge Alabama for the division crown assuming…

BAMA IS FIT TO BE “TIDE”: After dispensing of a Big-10 pretender in Arlington and slamming an MTSU sandwich Alabama gets down to business in Tuscaloosa versus the only team to beat them in the 2014 regular season. Ole Miss averaging an astonishing 75 ppg may have trouble gaining that many yards versus a Bama defense probably still angry about surrendering two TD passes in the last 5:29 in last season’s shocking loss. The Rebels will also have a little negative history to overcome after losing 26 of their all-time 27 trips to Tuscaloosa (1988).

DOES SPURRIER HAVE ANY MAGIC LEFT? Steve Spurrier’s magical years as a Head Coach appear to be clearly in the rearview mirror but if there is any hokus-pokus left it will almost assuredly appear versus Georgia. Spurrier is 15-5 –including an amazing 11-1 at Florida- as a head coach versus the Dawgs and last season got his troops up off the mat after getting thrashed by Texas A&M two weeks prior to deal Georgia a 38-35 defeat that later proved disastrous to their SEC East championship hopes.

BID ADIEUX TO 1&2 VOODOO? The longest series losing streak came to an end in Week 1 when Temple snapped a 31 game skid versus in-state rival Penn State. Want to guess who now is first place in terms of futility? If you said Kentucky you would be correct since the Cats are winless in their last 28 attempts versus the Gators. Can the top two losing streaks fall within 14 days of one another?

WHAT WE MUST SEE FROM VOLS IN GAME 3:

Stay healthy and get Dormady a half of experience.

WHAT VOL FANS SHOULD KNOW ABOUT WESTERN CAROLINA?

They’re in the Southern League and just lost to the Citadel

IN A PERFECT WORLD: Tennessee football would NEVER go through a stretch where we are 2-33 versus ranked teams.

BLOG BREAK: With apologies ahead of time there will be no blog next week. I realize the Gators lie straight ahead but I will be traveling early and in Vegas preparing to end the Florida stranglehold later in the week. Hope each of you has a blessed week and a terrific aftermath of the Vols visit to Gainesville. We’ll see you back here on October 1st and until then may God Bless you and yours.

We can now officially congratulate Caitlin Clark on breaking the record for the most points scored in women’s basketball!

Caitlin Clark is the biggest superstar in college basketball (men’s or women’s). That’s not just me being a fan, Caitlin Clark is HER! Caitlin scored 49 points on February 15th to pass Kelsey Plum’s NCAA record for the most career points in women’s college basketball..... [more]
It's a Love Story

Jared (the redneck from Roanoke, VA) thought the Taylor Swift coverage would end with the Super Bowl, but this love story isn’t going anywhere. In a game that was four hours and 18 minutes (that’s a total of 15,480 seconds). Swift only appeared for around 55 seconds! 55 SECONDS from the moment the game kicked off to the overtime touchdown.

Missouri Game Preview

The Vols did what they were expected to do against UConn. There's not really much to say about that game. The game this Saturday in Columbia, Missouri will decide whether or not this season is a failure in my opinion. If they Vols lose, they are staring at 8-4 and probably the Gator Bowl. Maybe Reliaquest..... [more]
Connecticut Game Preview

The Vols are coming back to Neyland Stadium and I am returning after a discretionary bye week. I'll be honest with you. This year it seems like I've been writing the same preview over and over because the formula to win has been the same pretty much every SEC game. I didn't want to sound like a broken record so I needed a bit of a break from that.

I'll start with some general observations..... [more]
