SEC TEAM WEAKNESSES
S-K-I-N IN THE GAME INTRO

SINCE WE LAST SPOKE 7-24-14

SEC WEAKNESSES: With only 37 days remaining (35 for Ole Miss, A&M and S Car) until the start of CFB season here are some areas that SEC staffs will be looking to shore up:

ALABAMA- QB A.J McCarron was 36-4 with 2 National Championships in his three years as a starter for the Crimson Tide and it appears Alabama is not ready for his departure. Sr Blake Sims and Jr Florida State transfer Jacob Coker –who never started a game for the Seminoles- have some huge shoes to fill. Honorable Mention-Secondary A trouble spot in 2013 that hasn’t exactly been rectified leading into the upcoming campaign. Jr, safety Landon Collins is a solid player but his supporting cast seems questionable after spring practice failed to solidify other starters due to injury or poor performance.

ARKANSAS- Wide Receiver Too bad TE Hunter Henry doesn’t count because he is far-and-away the Hogs most dangerous receiver. Keon Hatcher is the only returning starting WR and he was inconsistent at best. Freshman Jared Corneilus and JUCO Cody Hollister must have an immediate impact to make the unit serviceable Honorable Mention-QB In 11 starts in 2013 Brandon Allen completed less than 50 percent of his passes for 13 TDs and 10 INTs yet he is entrenched as the Hog’s starter. His backups are a redshirt (his Brother Austin) and a true freshman (Rafe Peavey).

AUBURN- Secondary The Tigers finished 13th in the league in pass defense (258.6 ypg, lost solid Cover Corner -and Bama game hero- Chris Johnson and return only two players with significant playing time (CB Jonathan Mincey; S Jermaine Whitehead)Honorable Mention-PK/P Auburn lost both PK Cody Parkey and pin-back artist P Steven Clark to graduation. Daniel Carlson and Jimmy Hutchison better be quick learners with veins full of ice water.

FLORIDA-Wide Receivers Quinton Dunbar (catch in 28 straight games) is a solid option but after that it’s anyone’s guess. A trio of Sophs (Ahmad Fullwood, Demarcus Robinson, Chris Thompson) must step up. How is this position even a question in the State of Florida? Honorable Mention-PK Who do the Gators think they are FSU? Austin Hardin made only 4 of 12 FG attempts in 2013 and somehow retained the job for this season as well.

GEORGIA-Offensive Line The Dawg front lost solid LT Kenarious Gates and two other starters leaving behind either inconsistent or inexperienced replacements. Honorable Mention-QB Hutson Mason may be a fine football player but it’s hard to imagine him being anywhere close to the player Aaron Murray was for Georgia

KENTUCKY- QB- Jalen Whitlow started 15 games in his Kentucky career but transferred out of the program in the spring. Regardless if it is redshirt freshman Reese Phillips, Soph Patrick Towles or freshman Drew Barker their next start will be their first. Honorable Mention-Linebacker The Cats lost Avery Williamson who made 237 tackles in the last two seasons. Sooner or later Kentucky has to run out of Williamson, Wesley Woodyard, Danny Trevathan types right? Khalid Henderson is the only returning starter.

LSU-Wide Receiver Odell Beckham and Jarvis Landry combined for 2345 yds and 18 TDs for LSU. Unfortunately for the Tigers they will be in the NFL in 2014 and Soph Travin Dural and Sr Quantavius Leslie are the only returning receivers with a career reception. Honorable Mention-QB Zach Mettenberger fulfilled the tremendous potential most thought he possessed all along. He too will now be paid to play. It’s hard to envision either redshirt soph. Anthony Jennings or freshman Brandon Harris being anywhere near as productive.

MISSISSIPPI ST.-PK Last year’s placement specialist Devon Bell was only 7-15 on FG attempts and was moved to punter for the 2014 season. He was replaced by Evan Sobiesks who was only 3-6. Honorable Mention-Offensive Line The Bulldogs lost three starters and leader of this year’s unit C Dillon Day was injury-prone in the spring

MISSOURILinebacker Three-time season tackles leader Andrew Wilson is gone and the only returning starter is Kentrell Brothers coming off April shoulder surgery. Honorable Mention-Secondary The Tigers must also replace ¾ of last season’s starting quintet including All-SEC CB E.J Gaines. Braylon Webb –a three year starter- is back at SS.

OLE MISSOffensive Line The Rebels lost three starters and two other contributors from the 2013 unit. LT Laremy Tunsil is an ALL-SEC-caliber lineman the rest of the unit is comprised of question marks. Honorable Mention –PK/P Tyler Campbell and PK Andrew Ritter were solid for the Rebels the last two seasons. Gary Wunderlich was some services pick as the #1 High School PK in America but of course doesn’t have a college attempt. He may be pressed into double-duty in 2014 since he also punts.

SOUTH CAROLINASecondary The Cocks lost both starting CBs (Victor Hampton, Jimmy Legree) and returns only one with any playing experience (Rico McWilliams) The 4-deep lists two sophs and a freshman so Safeties Chaz Elder and Brison Williams will have to be the leaders. Honorable Mention-Wide Receiver This is more about how good/clutch the departed Bruce Ellington truly was and that Damiere Byrd is coming off knee surgery. Shaq Roland will have to play all year as he did late in 2013.

TENNESSEE-Offensive Line As we’re reminded repeatedly the Vols are the only team in the country to lose all starters from their offensive and defensive lines. The much-ballyhooed departees never lived up to their run blocking potential but were certainly solid in pass-pro. It’s time for the upper classmen dominated replacements to earn their scholarship Honorable Mention-QB Justin Worley is smart and experienced but there is nothing special about his game. Josh Dobbs is apparently brilliant off the field but must get stronger and smarter on it.

TEXAS A&M-Linebacker The Aggies bring back only one starter in Soph Darian Claiborne who had 89 tackles but he was suspended for Spring Practice. There is potential here but all but Claiborne are unproven. Honorable Mention-Secondary This area is actually Bad-1A. Like LB the only proven playmaker in the secondary is Deshazor Everett. Both starting safeties are seniors (Howard Matthews, Floyd Raven) but were part of the reason A&M’s defense was All-Sunseiri in 2013.

VANDERBILT-Wide Receiver Commodores are going from Super Man to Clark Kent. Jordan Matthews was as instrumental to Vandy’s emergence as James Franklin and while both Jordan Cunningham and Latevius Rayford have potential neither will come close to Matthews’ production Honorable Mention-QB The Dores –like the Vols- have hopes but no sure things at signal caller. Patton Robinette was apparently unseated by Freshman Johnny McCrary in the spring but both may be relegated to the bench by LSU transfer Stephen Rivers who probably will remind no one of his brother Phillip.

REVIEW OF SCHEDULE BREAKDOWN: At this time last season when the 2014 Vol Football schedule was released I blogged my initial thoughts on the slate. Here is what I wrote at that time and my opinions from a year ago still stand:

Aug. 31: Utah State
Sept. 6: Arkansas State
Sept. 13: at Oklahoma
Sept. 20: Open
Sept. 27: at Georgia
Oct. 4: Florida
Oct. 11: UTC
Oct. 18: at Ole Miss
Oct. 25: Alabama
Nov. 1: at South Carolina
Nov. 8: Open
Nov. 15: Kentucky
Nov. 22: Missouri
Nov. 29: at Vanderbilt

LIKES:
-All but one of our non-conference games will be played in August and September leaving only UTC in a spot they don’t belong

-The late start to the SEC season. If we’re going to play an East power to start the SEC slate its better it occurs closer to October than to Labor Day.

-OK-LA-HO-MA; I love that Tennessee remains one of the few SEC teams that regularly takes on national powers that aren’t natural rivals.

-Three home games in October; the prettiest month of the year.

-Florida moving in the right direction on the schedule

-Open date placement; the first between road trips to Oklahoma and Georgia and the second basically breaking the slate up into thirds

-Alabama remaining an annual opponent

-Vandy back in last place where they belong; literally and figuratively

ADDITIONAL LIKE FROM ORIGINAL POSTING:
-Return of the Sunday Night Opener that Vols should have made a tradition years ago when presented with the opportunity.

DISLIKE (As in only one)
-UTC in October

FAB-FIVE HAS A FRIEND: Several weeks ago Brother Freddy called The Tony Basilio Show and suggested that the explosion of shifting defense was robbing MLB of much –needed scoring and altering hitting stats to the point that rules should be introduced limiting how the strategy could be utilized. He apparently has an advocate in no less than renowned Sports Illustrated writer Tom Verducci:

‘LINK’

Now I almost always side with my big brother because he instilled in me the importance of doing so at a time when I was too young to know better. While I tend to in this case as well my jealousy of left-handed hitters –who Verducci explained are the most negatively affected by shifting- leads me to lean otherwise. As in “Hey Lefties, GET YOU SOME OF THAT FOR A CHANGE”. Left-handed hitters have reaped the benefits of built-in advantages since the game’s inception such as:

-being two strides closer to first base and increasing that to three if they decide to drag a bunt
-seemingly every field was designed by a left handed power-hitting engineer
-the vast majority of pitchers are right handed
-from Little League to the Major Leagues the left hander’s batter’s box is more pristine due to limited use

These advantages have been in place since the first MLB game was played in 1876. That’s 139 years of lopsided advantage for those swinging from the left side. As George C Scott uttered In Patton when the Base he was at was being pelted with bombs prior to pulling his pistol to fire at an attacking enemy plane, “All-right, By God that’s enough”

S-K-I-N in the GAME: Today I debut a new section that will be a regular feature in the Beano-Blog. In this instance S-K-I-N stands for “Swift Kick in Nuts”. The section will be dedicated to uncovering painful events suffered by fans or in some cases pointing out anyone associated with the sports world that deserves to be ruptured.

This week’s S-K-I-N award goes to… The guy at the tee of any PGA event that yells “Get in the hole” after every drive. If you’re that guy shut your pie hole or go get in your own hole. I only watch about four days of golf a season and even I’m tired of your nonsense.

IN A PERFECT WORLD: Sports would still be the escape from every-day issues that it once was….or at least seemed to be.

We can now officially congratulate Caitlin Clark on breaking the record for the most points scored in women’s basketball!

Caitlin Clark is the biggest superstar in college basketball (men’s or women’s). That’s not just me being a fan, Caitlin Clark is HER! Caitlin scored 49 points on February 15th to pass Kelsey Plum’s NCAA record for the most career points in women’s college basketball..... [more]
It's a Love Story

Jared (the redneck from Roanoke, VA) thought the Taylor Swift coverage would end with the Super Bowl, but this love story isn’t going anywhere. In a game that was four hours and 18 minutes (that’s a total of 15,480 seconds). Swift only appeared for around 55 seconds! 55 SECONDS from the moment the game kicked off to the overtime touchdown.

Missouri Game Preview

The Vols did what they were expected to do against UConn. There's not really much to say about that game. The game this Saturday in Columbia, Missouri will decide whether or not this season is a failure in my opinion. If they Vols lose, they are staring at 8-4 and probably the Gator Bowl. Maybe Reliaquest..... [more]

The Vols are coming back to Neyland Stadium and I am returning after a discretionary bye week. I'll be honest with you. This year it seems like I've been writing the same preview over and over because the formula to win has been the same pretty much every SEC game. I didn't want to sound like a broken record so I needed a bit of a break from that.

I'll start with some general observations..... [more]
