Congratulations...You survived the Butch Jones era!!!!!

Yesterday Was A Loooong One: We did a special marathon Emergency Fifth Quarter Call In Show after the news broke ... I went 7 hours and 35 minutes discussing much of what you're going to read below. I love this fan base!!! If you missed this show you can find it right here. Just be advised that I was pretty out of control as I was operating on roughly 5 and a half hours sleep and little else.

I'm Sorry: Upon further review my language and impatience toward some were really out of character. I used waaaay too much profanity. I want you to know that it's really not how I am, but when I get tired I snap. If I ranted at you or offended you with any of my profanity, I'm sorry. I don't want to be that guy. I don't use language for effect. I generally use salty language when I'm exhausted or at my wits end. People were trying to get a rise out of me and they succeeded. I promise that I’ll try to not let it happen again. I truly am sorry, but am just a guy.

I Am Glad I got to defend Jayson Swain yesterday on the air with that awful story about the the way Butch Jones treated Daniel Helm. Give the show a listen if you missed it. Needless to say, Swain stands tall today as an ally of the common fan and current and former UT players. That's my mission as well. Jayson was really heartfelt in his love for this place and Tennessee's program. Upon further review Butch Jones turned into a real clown.

'Big....Expensive.....Explosive....' That's what John Currie told a prominent booster early Sunday morning about UT's upcoming hire in football according to Nathanael Rutherford of Rockytopinsider.com. Who fits that criteria?

Big Expensive Explosive Hires: Gruden. Mic Drop to rest of college football. Kelly. He'd kill it at Tennessee. Peterson. He's a great coach but so farfetched. J Fisher: Would be a huge hire!!!

There aren't many guys that could ring that bell here in Knoxville. I guess we can dream.

Tennessee Football is about to come back from the dead. This time I really mean it!!!

'Bachillville:

Ok, so the Butch Jones boil has been lanced. Too bad we couldn't dump Larry Scott and Bob Shoop at the same time, but somebody's got to show up with Brady Hoke and coach our beleaguered team Saturday night. We won't engage in a big autopsy of the Butch Jones Era in this space this morning. Instead, we'll try to administer a big unwanted dose of realism to our beloved Tony Basilio family today.

DOSE #1: This one is so important, we're going to deliver this by injection, not orally. We're not hiring a so-called "big-time coach." Not Jon Gruden. Not Chip Kelly. Not Jimbo Fisher, James Franklin, Chris Petersen, Gary Patterson and probably not Dan Mullen (although maybe we can hope on this one). There are many reasons for this. The House of Haslam doesn't like rock star coaches. They prefer a coach who gets on the prayer mat and points toward Pilot headquarters each day at noon. The other reason is our high revenue athletics department has high expenses. Yes, we know John Currie tried to say in his presser yesterday that money wouldn't be a problem in this search, but we know otherwise. This search is an inconvenient interruption of Currie's effort to raise tens of millions of dollars for a needed upgrade of Neyland Stadium's south end.

DOSE #2: Based on Dose #1, and we can administer this one orally because many of you will need a booster of Dose #1 because you continue to listen to your cousin's next-door neighbor who will swear that Gruden's wife will be seen shopping for houses this afternoon. Because of the pond we will be swimming in, John Currie will need to be thinking out of the box in making this hire, but we are skeptical. You can almost guarantee names like Mike Norvell, who has not yet completed his second year at Memphis of the American Athletic Conference, will take center stage in this process. Other paper-thin resumes like Neal Brown at Troy will be on the list. Given that, is Currie bold enough to consider Lane Kiffin? Defensive coordinators like Greg Schiano, UT grad Kevin Steele or Brent Venables at Clemson?

We hope we're wrong but we are not optimistic.

Something For Dave: Let's all remember that Butch Jones of Dave Hart and his failed regime. Jones joins Donnie Tyndall as a failed Hart hire and the jury is still out on Rick Barnes though early returns are underwhelming.

Click to Performance Medicine!
AROUND THE SEC: Speaking of Steele, his AUBURN defense completely throttled GEORGIA and exposed the Bulldogs of the SEC Least as an imposter in a 40-17 rout. Georgia's road win at Notre Dame lost altitude as the Irish was routed at Miami ... Our top semi-realistic pick for UT's next head coach, Dan Mullen, had his MISSISSIPPI STATE team primed for an upset of ALABAMA, but the Tide prevailed late.

OUR NEXT OPPONENT, the LSU Tigers, handled ARKANSAS 33-10 and RB Derrius Guice must be salivating at the thought of the stats he's going to compile against the porous Bob Shoop run defense ... KENTUCKY basically made sure the Nov. 25 VANDY at Tennessee game will be the "Worst of the SEC" Bowl by dispatching the home standing Commodores, 44-21 ... Will Muschamp's South Carolina Gamecocks continued their very nice season by beating the Florida Gators, 28-20. Four Gamecock turnovers made it closer but Carolina controlled this game.

Free at last...Free at last....Awesome stuff....

I'm afraid you're right as far as the eventual hire. From my point of view Tennessee is either going to get John Gruden or else somebody pretty good if they don't screw it up. As we've seen it can be a quick fall to this point. Tennessee is either going to get Gruden or a reasonable facsimile or they're going to end up back in question mark land. Even at that there are smart hires there but they will take testicular fortitude. Would Tennessee hire Lane Kiffin? They should be desperate enough to roll the dice there. But are they?

Are Grumors Real? YES!!! They are!!!! I'm finally getting the feeling that there could be something to this. For the first time last night I got an indication that John Gruden and Tennessee could actually be a real thing. I'm starting to think there's some there there. Now, how much there truly is remains to be seen. There are lots of moving parts to any Gruden to UT scenarios.

Timetable on Grumors: Now, I'm not saying it's going to happen but I will tell you this. If it's going to happen, it's going to happen quickly. It's not like Jon Gruden has a team to coach or playoffs to prepare for in the NFL.

Why Could Gruden And UT Get Real? Again, I'm not saying that they are, but there were a couple of things that I learned late last night after poking around with a few contacts in the industry.

Firstly Gruden's Situation At ESPN May Be Changing: ESPN is under TREMENDOUS financial pressure. They don't have a LONG TERM contract. They have 3 or 4 more years. They are asking most of their talent to take significant (in some cases) haircuts. The salad days are over at ESPN. This is a far different ESPN than it was the last time the UT job was open.

Potential Bad News For Grumorites: Tampa Bay is firing Dirk Koetter. I was told by a source pretty close to the Bucs beat that it's believed John Gruden would LOOOOOOOOVE to get his old job back in Tampa. Though they won yesterday, Tampa has disintegrated. Like the Vols, the Bucs have fallen on hard times in recent years. Gruden is a member of the Bucs Hall of Fame. They love him there.

The Bottom Line: Gruden's price tag has probably decreased with this news of ESPN asking high priced air talent to take cuts, but is he in Tennessee's financial ballpark?

My Bottom Line On This: In other words I've learned enough in making a few phone calls to state that this Gruden to Tennessee scenario is much more plausible than it appeared to me.

Would House Of Haslam Take Jon Gruden At UT: If they deliver Jon Gruden once and for all to take all the heat off their brand in the state of Tennessee? Think of how that trial would go in Chattanooga if they deliver Gruden to the Vol faithful? Sure the HOH would be giving away some power with Gruden's presence on UT's campus but they would at least have appeared to have finally gotten something right when it comes to UT football. This would be a huge feather in the cap of a family that has taken a rightful beating in recent years from those in Big Orange Country that pay attention to the inner workings.

Would Gruden Take The Job? Again...I don't believe it's going to happen. He's notorious for playing with people when it comes to job openings. That's his reputation. He's so used to the adulation EVERYWHERE because of his celebrity. He does tell people what he wants them to hear.

Give Currie Credit: He didn't give Butch that contract extension and raise back in the Summer. That saves UT some money here.

Dave Hart???? You can't make this up but he just launched a new consulting company. How does that guy get clients without doctoring his resume?

Jimmy Sexton Is Pushing Dan Mullen!!!! Could Tennessee get him? I don't know but I think he wants to move.

Mike Hamilton Is Telling Friends that Tennessee is going to hire Scott Frost. If that proves to be the case then Tennessee will pay through the nose for him because he's in play at both Florida AND Nebraska. I'm talking $8 million per year.

#Grumors In T Mail Form!!!!

'Ok Tony, I'm going to give you a counterpoint to why it might just be...it could just be.... Jon Gruden. First, you have to admit it is getting much more wide spread mainstream media coverage than last time that he is a possibility. Now we have "no search firm" Currie. Meaning to me we have our guy or really good coaches are reaching out.

Second, while Gruden loves attention it seems at this point to play the game with UT again is dangerous to his standing with boosters and the common fan in general. It isn't just a Grumor that he does love the school and area. Even the most cynical anti-Grudenite can admit that much. He isn't a fool and knows that this would be his absolute last go around of anyone caring. So, it seems a short flirtation would have made better sense and then make announcement he was staying at ESPN IF he wasn't serious. Why would he stay silent this long without saying "no thank you"? To get a raise from ESPN? Don't think so with the problems they are having! Dangerous game. They might just say sayonara.

Third, I'm not a fan of Currie and Haslam decision making up to this point but are they really this tone-deaf? If true Coach 23 has known for awhile he is gone then have these guys really calmly let him coach this long with no plan?....all the while watching Florida and others have pick of the litter of coaches? Now if you say yes I can understand that. After all, it would matchup with a lot of the malfeasance we have seen here through the years.

Remember Hart sitting in his office doing nothing for a week while everyone was wondering what the hell he was doing after firing Dooley? Then when word came down the Gruden deal was a no go he started running around like a chicken with his head cut off looking for a coach. Maybe Currie is waiting on Gruden AGAIN. Also, would Currie really be that confident he could raise 340 million if he didn't have some clue to the direction the football program was going? I find it hard to believe. My argument is our leadership might be stupid but are they THAT stupid?

I have decided to be hopeful and think that maybe......just maybe..... RWW (Ron Wright Wannabe) UTK Class of 88'

p.s. Get Mattingly on the phone. Did Currie say "exhaustive search" for next coach. Was that his cute way of a shout out back to another favorite son of Tennessee? Isn't that what was said when Johnny Majors was brought to the podium? Meaning he didn't have to search very hard? HAHA!'

Ron Wright Wannabe: I want to be wrong!!! I want the Grumor-Sexuals to let put it in my face for eternity. Jon Gruden would be a wonderful shot in the arm here! I'm embracing the Grumors!!! Do I think it's going to happen? No but I'd never say never because never is a long, long, long time.

If I Can't Have Gruden: Please HOH I'm begging you....Please Please Please if you love something, set it free. If you truly love Tennessee Football let Peyton Manning and Phillip Fulmer and others that have been there and done that have TRUE input in this.

#FillNeyland!!!! Those kids deserve it!!!

FAQ's Asked Of Tony Per Our Relaunch Announcement:

Q: Tony, you didn't say anything about your daily show yesterday. Will you continue to do this?

A: Absolutely. I'm looking forward to year #24 with you.

Q: Tony, you used the word 'subscribe'. What Am I subscribing too?

A: Great question. 'Subscribe' is a misnomer. What you actually are doing if you choose to help us monthly (and we need this for budgeting reasons) is actually acting as a patron. The goal is to keep the content (ALL CONTENT, from postgame offerings to various podcasts) free for all.

Q: So, if I'm not subscribing and I'm already reading this, why give?

A: Because you value the content and our contribution to the market and you want to help us keep this stuff free for everybody.

Q: Are you going to beat us up for money all the time here?

A: Absolutely not. I will bring this up a few times heading into the football season as we attempt to meet our financial goals and create new programming. I'll also mention it in the post-game format as well as the regional programming. I will not however wear you out with this. Either you feel the need to help us or you don't. This is why I'm taking today to field some question I received after day one.

Q: What happens if this doesn't generate the revenue you're seeking?

A: We will scale back our online offerings accordingly. The blog itself could even disappear. I really don't want this to happen but will be forced to spend my time in the most profitable way necessary. That's why we're having the conversation. All my cards are on the table here.

Q: Where can I find these new podcasts, like that X-Cast?

A: Click on "Podcast" wherever you see it on the site, and it will take you to our Podcast page.

We can now officially congratulate Caitlin Clark on breaking the record for the most points scored in women’s basketball!

Caitlin Clark is the biggest superstar in college basketball (men’s or women’s). That’s not just me being a fan, Caitlin Clark is HER! Caitlin scored 49 points on February 15th to pass Kelsey Plum’s NCAA record for the most career points in women’s college basketball..... [more]

Jared (the redneck from Roanoke, VA) thought the Taylor Swift coverage would end with the Super Bowl, but this love story isn’t going anywhere. In a game that was four hours and 18 minutes (that’s a total of 15,480 seconds). Swift only appeared for around 55 seconds! 55 SECONDS from the moment the game kicked off to the overtime touchdown.

Missouri Game Preview

The Vols did what they were expected to do against UConn. There's not really much to say about that game. The game this Saturday in Columbia, Missouri will decide whether or not this season is a failure in my opinion. If they Vols lose, they are staring at 8-4 and probably the Gator Bowl. The Vols are coming back to Neyland Stadium and I am returning after a discretionary bye week. I'll be honest with you. This year it seems like I've been writing the same preview over and over because the formula to win has been the same pretty much every SEC game. I didn't want to sound like a broken record so I needed a bit of a break from that.

I'll start with some general observations..... [more]
