Welcome To Thursday

Listener Watch Party: Tennessee/Mizzou. Saturday Night at Bearden Hill Fieldhouse. Presented by Miller/Coors. Going to be an awesome time! Come out and celebrate the fun and fellowship of being a part of the best fanbase in America.

As The HOH Turns:

Oh, it's a soap opera. You couldn't believe what I wrote a few days ago. But try this on for size in your Thursday offering. Butch Jones was joined in an all staff meeting early Wednesday morning by Mr. Haslam and John Currie. A source tells me that all three were literally hamming it up together in the front of a well attended meeting. One source present there told me the scene was more befitting of a 'head coach heading toward a 10-2 record feeling comfortable with the school's top booster'. Mr. Haslam was also delivering the message that both Pilot Oil and UT are both still great. You could have fooled me on both accounts. Would Jim Haslam really think hard about bringing Butch back in 2018???

I will say that Big Jim Haslam was also cozying up with Phillip Fulmer shortly before he was fired so there's that. Then again Butch is in the midst of a serious charm offensive that is seemingly finding a small audience. As the HOH Turns indeed. Maybe Mr. Haslam thinks we're playing in the C-USA Playoffs by way of our big victory over Southern Miss.

Tony...Why are you writing this today??????
Because it's true. It's all true. HOH is for real. Because Currie is completely beholden to the HOH. Because our Chancellor puts the Ding in Ding Bat. Because the System President is an invertebrate. Because Butch Jones thinks he has a chance at 2018. Because he's been given reason to believe he does. Because this place could screw up a 2 car funeral. Because these people couldn't even draft Carson Wentz. Because you better make your voice heard!!! And now!!!

Gabe D'Armond of PowerMizzou.com joined the show yesterday and brought the following to the table on Tennessee’s opponent Saturday Night.

Drew Lock has taken more heat from Mizzou fans than deserved.

He played in 2015 before he deserved. Even in week 6 Mizzou was 1-5.

Drew Lock Should be all SEC QB.

Receivers aren't very good.

Mizzou owned line of scrimmage & OC Heupel committed to the run Despite missing starting RB.

Using TE's. Moving ball really well. Put 34 on KY. They put 21 on GA in a quarter and a half.

Lock has tremendous arm talent. Better than Daniel, Gabbert etc.

Mizzou D Line continues to shine. Ace defensive line coach Craig Kuligowski is gone to Miami U. Beckner & Logan are healthy and rolling now. Beckner looks like a 5 star player. Decent DE's.

It will a big problem for TN if Mizzou gets first couple of scores early.

Mizzou was 1-5 coming out of Georgia Game but hit reset button on the season.

Can UT run on Mizzou? #'s don't look good but pass defense is atrocious. Way to beat Mizzou is to throw it.

Is This A Checkout Game Saturday Night? Could Saturday night be a checkout game for the Vols? At some point the bubble has to pop on Butch Jones. These guys are playing hard for Butch Jones. They've continued to play hard. There's no denying that but every team has a breaking point. Here are some reasons Tennessee could really get hammered Saturday night.

Already Been A Long Season: Ask yourself this. How long does it feel since Tennessee opened the season with Georgia Tech? No. Really. How long does it feel since the start of the season. It feels like it's been 3 years, doesn't it? If time seems to have stopped for us, how long do you think the 2017 season feels to the young guys on this team.

Jones Turning Over O Coaching Staff: We reported a stone cold fact to you a few days back right in this space. Butch Jones is promising the HOH and other boosters that he's going to run his entire offensive coaching staff (except Robert Gillespie) if he gets year #6. This is a stone cold fact and EVERY coach on that side of the football realizes this. What do you think their level of buy-in is coming down the stretch? If Tennessee gets behind early they really could get hammered. That coaching dissension among this staff feels like the last couple of years of the Dooley regime. Just sayin'.

Click to Performance Medicine!
# Of Injuries: How much can one group of kids take before the pop? Do you really believe Guarantano is going to start and finish this game? He might start but chances are JG won't finish. It's not that I'm wishing injury on anybody but high ankle sprains are a brutal injury to try and navigate on a cold night on artificial turf. Tennessee will easily be working with a makeshift offensive line. Now, Missouri has had trouble rushing the passer. Then again so did EVERY other Tennessee opponent prior to playing the Vols.

41 Degrees At Kickoff: With a 10 mile per hour wind. Going to get cold. The total from Vegas is 61. I'll play the under. McBride is going to feel that cold wind on Saturday. That atmosphere is going to be brutal in the worst venue in the SEC.

5 yrs of Mixed Signals From Jones: On one hand he loves his kids. On the other he twists and distorts his players with mind games that would make Coach Blevins from Bearden proud. A couple of VFL's have told me that if Missouri gets up on the Vols big early there is the real chance Tennessee could quit in this game.

Not Enough O to stick around: At some point the lack of there, there is going to catch up with Tennessee. Mizzou doesn't defend the pass very well nor do they rush the passer. But Tennessee can neither pass block, throw or catch very well.

Alex Myers
'I want to start today’s blog off by thanking Tony and Nathanael Rutherford for holding things down while I couldn’t be there on last week’s version of Southeastern Sunday Night. I came down with a bad cold, but I’m just about back to 100% now. I’ll be absent one final time this weekend because of a previously scheduled wedding event involving one of my best friends.

Back to Vols talk!
Throughout this season, we’ve had a chance to really look into each position group for the 2017 Vols. However, how many of those positions have really lived up to the expectations? In my opinion there is one clear choice. That position group, you guessed it, is the running backs.

One thing is for sure, if there’s a change made at UT, I think it’d be a very good idea to keep running backs Coach Robert Gillespie on staff. All the guy does is develop players. Regardless of who the running back is, they continue to produce for what has otherwise been an inconsistent offense in the Jones era.

This got me thinking about some assistants who have been fan favorites during their time in Knoxville. We’ll start this discussion at the year 2000, and we’ll take down names up until this season. I’m open to names from the Fulmer, Kiffin, Dooley, and Jones era. At this point, we can even mention a couple of basketball coaches if need be.

In no particular order, here are a few that come to mind:

Trooper Taylor: A coach for the Vols in the mid-2000s, Taylor was successful in coaching several different Tennessee players. During his time as a RB coach, the Vols had players like Cedric Houston, Arian Foster and Gerald Riggs Jr. He was a wide receivers coach as well during his time in Knoxville, and he coached Robert Meacham and others while holding that position. It wasn’t just the coaching job he did that made him a fan favorite. I remember Taylor as an energetic, enthusiastic assistant coach that would get players and fans alike fired up during his time on the sideline.

Dan Brooks: Brooks may not have been quite the showman that Trooper Taylor was, but he had longevity as an assistant that is extremely rare to see these days. He coached defensive line under Phillip Fulmer and coached here for well over a decade. Brooks had an allure because he just seemed like an old school guy. He didn’t look like a guy who was any different from anyone you might know. Brooks’ impact on the program was a huge one, and if you don’t believe that, just take a look back at some of the defensive lineman the Vols turned out during his time here.

Nicodemus Christopher (Basketball): Here’s a guy who Tony loved to talk about as the Cuonzo Martin era came to an end at Tennessee. Nicodemus Christopher was a guy who just gave the impression that he flat out loved what he did for a living. Before, during, and after the game Christopher was heavily involved in everything Tennessee Basketball. Although his expertise was found inside of the weight room, Cuonzo Martin’s strength and conditioning coach could frequently be seen getting the team, and even the fans hyped up and into the game from the sidelines.

John Chavis: As cliché as “third and Chavis” has become, I think that he is still a very well respected coach when it comes to assistants at Tennessee in the last 20 or so years. His defenses were never short on talent, and in fact some of my favorite Vol defenders ever were players under Chavis’ defensive staff. Think about names like Eric Berry, big John Henderson, Albert Haynesworth, Leonard Little, Al Wilson, Jabari Greer, Jason Allen, Kevin Simon, Rico McCoy, and Jerod Mayo, just to name a few. Another thing that separates Chavis from others, is that he played football for UT. There was never a doubt in fans’ mind that he was truly, giving his all for Tennessee.

Honorable Mentions: Justin Phelps (Basketball, Tyndall era)
Randy Sanders…Maybe?
Jim Bob Cooter as a grad assistant

Alex Meyers'

Alex!!! Great stuff....I love you mentioning Whoopi Gold's Gym!!! Looking back on it now those Cuonzo Martin teams were great times. As for assistant coaches, Tennessee has had some great ones through the years. Fulmer's 1998 staff was amazing looking back on it.

You had on Defense: Steve Caldwell Dan Brooks Kevin Ramsey Rodney Garner John Chavis Offense: David Cutcliffe Randy Sanders Mike Barry Mark Bradley Pat Washington

That's some interesting stuff. That's an insanely great coaching staff there.

The Pearl? He'll never be forgotten for what he did here but Bruce Pearl's entire tenure at Auburn has been one giant mis-step. They ought to just shut that hoops program down. It's never ever going to happen again for those folks.

Barnes Had A Plan: Who knew that sitting on your ass in recruiting was going to work like a charm for Rick Barnes. The whole league is coming back to him as we speak. The couple of days could prove to be quite newsworthy if you're marking teams off. Tennessee could actually finish 6th in the SEC if this happens.

Touched By A Dark Angel: Auburn, Bama, A&M, Zona, Ga Tech, Ole Miss, Louisville & Ok State. And this is it for NOW. But just wait. If you add another 10 to this list, this Tennessee team might really start to look good as post-season basketball team.

From The Mouth Of Titans Bill Butch Jones is an actor playing a head coach.

Final Thought: From John Brice. 'So Butch Jones wants to turn over his offensive coaching staff to save himself. Does this mean he'll pay the buyouts for ALL these coaches that HE chose last year out of HIS OWN pocket.'

FAQ's Asked Of Tony Per Our Relaunch Announcement:

Q: Tony, you didn't say anything about your daily show yesterday. Will you continue to do this?

A: Absolutely. I'm looking forward to year #24 with you.

Q: Tony, you used the word 'subscribe'. What Am I subscribing too?

A: Great question. 'Subscribe' is a misnomer. What you actually are doing if you choose to help us monthly (and we need this for budgeting reasons) is actually acting as a patron. The goal is to keep the content (ALL CONTENT, from postgame offerings to various podcasts) free for all.

Q: So, if I'm not subscribing and I'm already reading this, why give?

A: Because you value the content and our contribution to the market and you want to help us keep this stuff free for everybody.

Q: Are you going to beat us up for money all the time here?

A: Absolutely not. I will bring this up a few times heading into the football season as we attempt to meet our financial goals and create new programming. I'll also mention it in the post-game format as well as the regional programming. I will not however wear you out with this. Either you feel the need to help us or you don't. This is why I'm taking today to field some question I received after day one.

Q: What happens if this doesn't generate the revenue you're seeking?

A: We will scale back our online offerings accordingly. The blog itself could even disappear. I really don't want this to happen but will be forced to spend my time in the most profitable way necessary. That's why we're having the conversation. All my cards are on the table here.

Q: Where can I find these new podcasts, like that X-Cast?

A: Click on "Podcast" wherever you see it on the site, and it will take you to our Podcast page.

We can now officially congratulate Caitlin Clark on breaking the record for the most points scored in women’s basketball!

Caitlin Clark is the biggest superstar in college basketball (men’s or women’s). That’s not just me being a fan, Caitlin Clark is HER! Caitlin scored 49 points on February 15th to pass Kelsey Plum’s NCAA record for the most career points in women’s college basketball..... [more]
It's a Love Story

Jared (the redneck from Roanoke, VA) thought the Taylor Swift coverage would end with the Super Bowl, but this love story isn’t going anywhere. In a game that was four hours and 18 minutes (that’s a total of 15,480 seconds). Swift only appeared for around 55 seconds! 55 SECONDS from the moment the game kicked off to the overtime touchdown.

Missouri Game Preview
Posted: Thu, Nov 9th, 12:56 PM

The Vols did what they were expected to do against UConn. There's not really much to say about that game. The game this Saturday in Columbia, Missouri will decide whether or not this season is a failure in my opinion. If they Vols lose, they are staring at 8-4 and probably the Gator Bowl. Maybe Reliaquest..... [more]
Connecticut Game Preview

The Vols are coming back to Neyland Stadium and I am returning after a discretionary bye week. I'll be honest with you. This year it seems like I've been writing the same preview over and over because the formula to win has been the same pretty much every SEC game. I didn't want to sound like a broken record so I needed a bit of a break from that.

I'll start with some general observations..... [more]
