So many of you touched my heart by coming out to the FISH Pantry Tailgate. I met so many wonderful people from all across the region at that event. Y'all watered my soul with that tremendous turnout. Mike Carver and his staff did an amazing job with that event. Thousands of people had to come through. It was really overwhelming and humbling meeting so many of you. Your support of our efforts is greatly appreciated.

Listener Watch Party V is Saturday Night at Bearden Hill Fieldhouse! Come early and watch second half of Auburn vs. Georgia. Don't let Butch Jones ruin your football season. Get out and support what we do here and embrace the fellowship.

Orange Throat is up first factual and furiously today.

Orange Throat
'Basilio Nation:

Random musings as we pay tribute to all the Vol fans who showed up and supported our beleaguered football team Saturday night.

AUNT EDNA'S already in trouble. Friday saw the rare occurrence of some members of the UT Board of Trustees openly criticizing the decision of UTK chancellor Beverly "Aunt Edna" Davenport to reject a money-saving outsourcing plan. Only eight months into his tenure, John Currie must be wondering about his decision to come to Knoxville. A destabilized chancellor, the chancellor who hired him, isn't good for Currie. His handling of the Butch Jones implosion and stubborn, tone-deaf approach to announcing the Neyland Stadium project, are self-inflicted wounds. However, none of this is fatal but it puts a huge premium on Currie making a great hire to be Tennessee's next head football coach.

MEANWHILE, Tennessee's depleted football team certainly looked better-coached and motivated than the ragtag Southern Miss team it played Saturday night. The Golden Eagles didn't get a good whistle but were guilty on most of the 14 penalty calls for 120 yards. QB Keon Howard was awful and gave the Vols the game in the third quarter by turning it over on back-to-back possessions and UT took advantage and ran the score to 24-3.

THE VOL OFFENSE started sharply and Jarrett Guarantano looked good in marching his team to a touchdown. JG's lower-extremity injury certainly affected the game and the offense could only manage 210 yards in the game. Freshman QB Will McBride managed things ok in relief and didn't turn the ball over. As far as anyone questioning UT burning McBride's redshirt year, he is the #2 quarterback. He's the next man in.

TIME TO GIVE OUR DEFENSE some credit. Corner coach Charlton Warren looks like a good hire and one hopes he'll get consideration by the new head coach. Are the Vols the fourth best pass defense in the country? No, they haven't played any real good passing teams so far, but will get their toughest test of the season Saturday night at Missouri.

WHICH BRINGS US TO BUTCH JONES. The mass boycott of Neyland failed for homecoming. A good crowd showed up to see a 3-5 Tennessee football team that is still playing hard. Jones can at least make his situation interesting if his team can pull off the upset at Mizzou, and then rally a big crowd to support his underdog team against a more-talented LSU team. We don't see how this team, especially missing so many players on offense, can muster enough points to win at Columbia, but an upset would make the LSU game much more interesting.

ENCOURAGING TO SEE our Basketball Vols beat Clemson on the road in an exhibition yesterday, 71-67. The Tigers are less accomplished than their football brethren. They finished 12th out of 15 schools in the ACC last year with a 6-12 record. Still, this has to be viewed as a positive for Rick Barnes' third Tennessee team. For those of you keeping score at home, tomorrow represents Barnes' 950th day as the HC at UT and he has yet to sign or commit a Top 100 player in the nation.

AROUND THE SEC:

Speaking of MISSOURI, the Tigers thrashed FLORIDA 45-16 and abruptly ended the hopes of Florida interim HC Randy Shannon. Missouri QB Drew Lock was an efficient 15 of 20 for 228 yards and three scores and the Tigers outrushed the Gators, 227-93.

SOUTH CAROLINA's Jake Bentley was his usual scrappy self and kept the Gamecocks on the fringe of being in the game all day but GEORGIA did prevail, 24-10. The stout Bulldog defense limited South Carolina to 43 yards rushing ... Bret Bielema nearly became the next SEC head coach to fall but his ARKANSAS team rallied to beat FCS opponent Coastal Carolina, 39-38 ... KENTUCKY couldn't stand prosperity for long and let OLE MISS score with five seconds to go to beat the Wildcats, 37-34 at Grocery Field.

LSU's defense limited ALABAMA to 116 rushing yards but still lost, 24-10. Hard to see our Vol offense doing much against the Tigers on Nov. 18 ... AUBURN perhaps put the final nail in the coffin for HC Kevin Sumlin at TEXAS A&M by beating the Aggies at home, 42-27 ... MISSISSIPPI STATE struggled but QB Nick Fitzgerald ran for two scores in a 34-23 win that ran State's record to 7-2 ... VANDY had to have a win over Western Kentucky to stay in the hunt for a bowl and the Commodores did so with a 31-17 win.

IGYAE'

Throaty....Great stuff on Bev Davenport!!!! She stood up for common people and this entire community by voting against that crony capitalistic scheme of outsourcing. Bev Davenport called their fuzzy math FUZZY because it was FUZZY. She stood tall. But your point is well taken about the way she has created some instability for John Currie who really is in tough spot. Firstly he's been exposed badly in the inaction on Butch Jones. Not to mention that absurd letter to fans that you cited. What gets me is that he's in a situation where this hire could make or break him and he's going to have little say in who the next football coach is. That's the reality of this. But he's going to take FULL BLAME if this doesn't work out. It's like this. The Haslam's hired Dooley, and Hamilton got fired.

Great point Throaty on Charlton Warren. Why do I get the feeling that he won't be praised in this space on November 12th?

How fun would it be if Tennessee could string together 2 straight wins and really have fun atmosphere in Neyland Stadium. This would be fun to see.

Cheap Shots At Butch: Second guessing the decision of Butch Jones to play Will McBride in the first half of UT's tussle with Southern Miss seemed much ado about nothing. Anybody that's watched enough football knows a couple of things.

Ankle sprains tighten up at halftime.

There's no way to keep Guarantano clean in the second half of that game.

I said on an emergency Periscope transmission at halftime of the game that Will McBride was going to play in the second half because I know my stuff.

The right decision was to play Will McBride when they did because it looked as if Guarantano wasn't coming back into that game period. And unless you were planning on using a wildcat exclusively on the road next week at Mizzou, you have to get McBride ready to play in that game.

Therefore, I don't get the criticism of Jones here. I realize he stinks out loud as a game manager but he really had no choice given the circumstances.

Tony Robinson on Will McBride: 'I like him. Looks faster than Guarantano. I'm not talking footrace fast but he has a fast twitch. Plus he gets the ball out quickly and he puts a nice touch on the ball. I think he has a nice future ahead of him. He needs seasoning. He chose to run the ball a few times and took unnecessary shots. One with about 8 minutes to go in the 3rd quarter he had no business holding onto a ball and he about got himself hurt. He needs to wait in the pocket and if nothing's there let the ball go.'

Guarantano The Toughest? He's brought a lot of his beating on himself with his inability to recognize basic defensive alignments. Still Jarrett G gets an A+ for hustling to get back into the Southern Miss game even if he couldn't move. I was sure JG was gone for good in that game when McBride entered the game in the first half. When he fell over to end the first half it was apropos as it seemed as Guarantano was literally and figuratively knocked out of that game. The jury is very much out on the long-term viability of Guarantano as a starting QB at UT but there's no doubting his toughness.

John Kelly Is.. The best player in America nobody knows about. He's a one man gang when he gets it going downfield. Kelly's 20 yard TD run immediately following Emmanuel Moseley's interception was really special. He was in full beast mode in making no less than 3 would be tacklers on his way to a TD.

#WMLLM: Colton Jumper balled out against Southern Miss. His run fits were key to containing the Eagles while the Tennessee was able build the lead.

Darrell Taylor: With a key strip which allowed Gaulden to recover a fumble. He's really Tennessee's only nice player on that D-Line.

Tennessee's Defense: Is all of the sudden creating turnovers. Four last week and two in the decisive 3rd quarter Saturday should Vol fans hope that an upset could occur.

Oh Line: Granted Tennessee was forced to play several combinations in that game but for the first 33 minutes of that game they were getting very little push. Tennessee used to have an O Line but with all those injuries now has an Oh line.

Tony,

Knoxville survived another weekend with Butch Jones as the head football coach at Tennessee. Hopefully, there are only three more of those to endure.

1. The beating the Tennessee football brand has taken in the national media requires serious damage control. First and foremost, it necessitates the hiring of a proven winner to replace Butch Jones.

2. It is amazing that a traditional football power can end up in such dire straits across the offensive line. They are a couple of more injuries from pure disaster.

Click to 21st Mortgage!
3. I hate that the roster has been so mismanaged that Will McBride had to burn his redshirt. Of course, that is par for the course for this coach's tenure.

4. Saturday in Columbia has a very ominous feeling to it. Hard to see the Vols keeping up with a red hot Tiger offense.

5. The Big Ten has battered and beaten itself to the point that Wisconsin is the only playoff contender left. The Badgers just don't appear dynamic enough to me to be a national title contender.

Click to TN Bank!
6. Here's hoping nobody from the Big 12 ends up in the playoff. What they are playing out there scarcely resembles football.

7. It sure didn't take Lane Kiffin and Butch Davis long to make an impact. It appears the Shula Bowl in two weeks will be for Confernce USA East supremacy.

Click to Clancy's Tavern & Whiskey House!
8. Yesterday's exhibition win at Clemson is a good sign for the Basketball Vols. That is the caliber of opponent that inhabits the 5-12 neighborhood in the SEC.

9. Grant Williams appears to have gotten the message Rick Barnes was sending by benching him for the Carson Newman game. He was back to his productive ways against the Tigers.

Clancy's is he perfect place to stop before shows at the Tennessee Theatre. Enjoy Knoxville's authentic Irish pub atmosphere.

MONDAY ON MY MIND

O-LINE; A PORTRAIT OF JONES ERA:

NO MORE UNCONDITIONAL COACH BELIEF: As rampant speculation concerning Jones’s inevitable firing -and who his successor will be- escalates it is quite obvious there are few -if any- candidates who will immediately have large-scale buy-in from Big Orange Nation...

SOUTHERN MISS TAKEAWAYS:

WHAT WE LEARNED IN WEEK TEN:

4 SOON WON’T BE ENOUGH:

SEC LEAST:

HARD TO WIN IN BIG-10:

STOP CANING THE CANES:

FINAL MONDAY MUSING:...[more]

Vols Overcame Saturday Night: No Evan Berry No Guarantano No Calloway No Coleman Thomas for a few plays. Meant Jashon Robertson back to center. No Shawn Shamberger Getting Outgained in Total Yards Getting Out possessed clock wise Only 210 total yards of Total offense.

And still won easily. Southern Miss was all time dreadful. I mean that QB was dreadful. It was a 10-3 game in the third quarter and UT had NO ANSWERS but he blew any chance they had.

Click to Performance Medicine!
Is Southern Miss Coached? Did they do anything well in that football game? While the Vols were flagged zero times through 2 and a half quarters, Southern Miss was flagged 10 times. And many of the penalties were YUUUUGE. That said the call on them for leaping on the UT field goal in the 3rd quarter was ALL TIME SEC officiating at its finest. That was a straight garbage call all the way. Just a horrible call. Then again, Southern Miss was brutal. I loved seeing Southern MIss HC Jay Hopson run onto the field.

Flag Day: Through 37 minutes of football, Southern Miss committed 10 penalties for 105 yards. Meanwhile Tennessee played a clean game with zero penalties through 3 quarters. Vols didn't commit their first penalty until a Coleman Thomas false start that occurred with 11:03 in the game.

Tennessee Better Tighten Up: On offense this week or Butch Jones is going to get eliminated again from his own playoff. Mizzou's Drew Lock has 31 TD's on the year and needs 7 to tie Chase Daniel's single season school record. Here's hoping he doesn't get it.

Click to YMCA of East Tennessee!
Missouri Can Run The Ball? They ran it 46 times for 226 yards against Florida. Can you believe that?

Mizzou Mauled Florida: They had 455 yards of total offense on a Gator team that has checked out.

Tomorrow Eric S on Eye Discipline while I do the deep dive into (Charlie) Ergenomics.

FAQ's Asked Of Tony Per Our Relaunch Announcement:

Q: Tony, you didn't say anything about your daily show yesterday. Will you continue to do this?

A: Absolutely. I'm looking forward to year #24 with you.

Q: Tony, you used the word 'subscribe'. What Am I subscribing too?

A: Great question. 'Subscribe' is a misnomer. What you actually are doing if you choose to help us monthly (and we need this for budgeting reasons) is actually acting as a patron. The goal is to keep the content (ALL CONTENT, from postgame offerings to various podcasts) free for all.

Q: So, if I'm not subscribing and I'm already reading this, why give?

A: Because you value the content and our contribution to the market and you want to help us keep this stuff free for everybody.

Q: Are you going to beat us up for money all the time here?

A: Absolutely not. I will bring this up a few times heading into the football season as we attempt to meet our financial goals and create new programming. I'll also mention it in the post-game format as well as the regional programming. I will not however wear you out with this. Either you feel the need to help us or you don't. This is why I'm taking today to field some question I received after day one.

Q: What happens if this doesn't generate the revenue you're seeking?

A: We will scale back our online offerings accordingly. The blog itself could even disappear. I really don't want this to happen but will be forced to spend my time in the most profitable way necessary. That's why we're having the conversation. All my cards are on the table here.

Q: Where can I find these new podcasts, like that X-Cast?

A: Click on "Podcast" wherever you see it on the site, and it will take you to our Podcast page.

Jared (the redneck from Roanoke, VA) thought the Taylor Swift coverage would end with the Super Bowl, but this love story isn’t going anywhere. In a game that was four hours and 18 minutes (that’s a total of 15,480 seconds). Swift only appeared for around 55 seconds! 55 SECONDS from the moment the game kicked off to the overtime touchdown.

Missouri Game Preview

The Vols did what they were expected to do against UConn. There's not really much to say about that game. The game this Saturday in Columbia, Missouri will decide whether or not this season is a failure in my opinion. If they Vols lose, they are staring at 8-4 and probably the Gator Bowl. Maybe Reliaquest..... [more]

The Vols are coming back to Neyland Stadium and I am returning after a discretionary bye week. I'll be honest with you. This year it seems like I've been writing the same preview over and over because the formula to win has been the same pretty much every SEC game. I didn't want to sound like a broken record so I needed a bit of a break from that.

I'll start with some general observations..... [more]
