Pearl Patrol V!
This time we get jacked up for Tennessee Basketball by registering listeners in our Hardee's Pearl Patrol Bus Trip Friday March 10th @ Nashville for the Quarterfinal Round Of The SEC TOURNEY!There is only one way to qualify, by registering at local area Hardee’s locations during our live broadcasts in February and early March ’09! We have fifty spots up for grabs on a luxury coach from Chariots of Hire.

Not even the great Peyton Manning could stop what Who Dat Nation threw at him last night....The Irony of course is that his father is the patron saint of Who Dat Nation until he was eclipsed by Ricky Jackson, who became the first HOFer from Saint-Land. And I understand that Roger Daltrey was so moved by Payton's coaching job last night that he's renaming his group 'Who Dat'. And BTW Peyton was beaten by Payton and his father's old team while 'Who Dat' played at halftime on the same weekend the Saints had their first ever Hall of Famer. Beano warned himself Friday when he said in picking his Colts. 'But the Saints are the team of destiny'.

Bobby Hebert and Deke were out of control last night till 3am on 870 WWL out of New Orleans. You can get that channel when it gets dark and we will have a lot of fun with it. I'm telling you it's great fun. I've fallen in love with those people in the past 3 weeks listening to how important it was for them. That's the great irony as well. Manning knows how much this means to those people in this region. If he was going to serve one up to somebody, might as well be 'Who Dat Nation.'

But there was no giving the Saints anything last night. I tried to tell you the past couple of weeks that they are great! After falling behind 10-0, the Saints out gained the Cold 143-15 in the second quarter holding the ball for 12:26. Saints scored 176 point in the second quarter this year. The Colts had to know this coming in.

And as great as Peyton was, Payton was better. That little guy with the visor may have done the best coaching job you'll ever see. The decision to go on 4Th at the end of the first half was brilliant as it forced the Colts to punt from deep in their own territory. The decision to on-side kick was flat out incredible. The Saints weren't getting the lead playing those guys straight up. The decision to challenge the two was a tremendous one. Most people in America thought that was a dead ball but he took a chance and changed the complexion of the game.

Not to mention the job Greg Williams the DC at Who Dat did in designing a game plan that changed every quarter. Manning was truly confused at times in that 4Th quarter.

Meanwhile Caldwell looked like he was back at Weak Forest. He just sat over there and took it. How about that decision to try and let Stover kick a 52 yard fg. YOU GO THERE. That guy is older than dirt.

My favorite aspect of that game was that the game itself spoke volumes and eclipsed the silliness surrounding the Super Bowl. All the commercials were muted by the level of play and the execution and hitting we witnessed in that game.

The Colts and Manning have nothing to be ashamed of. They were beaten by a better team on a stage where they were not going to be denied. The Saints were NEVER losing that game last night. When they recovered that on-side kick, it was ball game.

Tracy Porter who picked that ball off had two picks in two weeks to get the Saints there. First last week, he got the int of Favre to send that game to OT. Then yesterday, he had the pick that sealed the deal. He's a native of Port Allen, LA. They were never going to lose. It seems meant to be. How else do you explain that.

BTW:
The Saints are only the second Super Bowl Champ to win 4 games when trailing by 10+ points in a season. The '87 Redskins did the same thing.

And the Colts out gained the Saints by over 100 yards but the Saints are only the 3rd team in Super Bowl history to win despite this distinction.

So....WHO DAT???????????????!!!!

Our basketball Vols are incredibly hard to figure out. Where did that defense come from Saturday night? Just like that the B-ball Vols are back alive. When Bobby Maze gets to the rim, this is a different team. The conscious decision to feed the post was wonderful. Chism was amazing as he continues his All-America quality of play. So we swept South Carolina this year. Quite an accomplishment, don't you think? It's great to go 2-0 against those guys. Those were two games I was really worried about. To beat that team twice in one season is getting it done. A double play over Devan Downey is really answering the bell. Oh, you say we've only beaten them once? No, that can't be. Because there's no way Bruce Pearl allows a couple of his players (JP Prince who else? & Chism) to go over and sit in the recliners in the student section at the end of the game while the game was still going on? So, I for one want to be the first to congratulate the Vols on the series sweep. Because you don't do that unless you've swept the series. And even then you don't do that because that's low class and low rent and has no place in sports. There is no need to show any opponent up. EVER. NEVER. Very sad that this went on at the end of a great night.

I don't know Mary K. Bruce. But she's completely off base in this letter she's written to the News Sentinel. Let me be the first to say that the Lady Vols get way more news paper coverage than they would in other markets of this size compared to their male hoops counterparts. That just a fact. In my mind the disproportionate coverage is driven by a mostly hidden agenda. You have to look for this to see it, but it's definitely there. I think it ties into the overall feminizing of our culture. For people like Mary K. It's never enough. I'm going to post the letter below regarding Friday's sports section which had ONE article on the basketball Vols and one and a half pages on ladies basketball. If you count the ink spent by the News Sentinel, on both teams, from start to finish in any season, it's out of line from attendance and reality. It just is. That said, Mary K. wants EVEN coverage more for the ladies. Here's her letter to the editor of the News Sentinel.

'Lady Vols deserve better coverage
On Feb. 4, the University of Tennessee men's and women's teams played basketball games. The men won 59-54. Their record is 17-4 overall, 5-2 SEC. The ladies won 74-57. Their record is 20-2 overall, 8-1 SEC. The women won by a larger margin than the men. Their records are better than the men's.
Kelley Cain tied the Lady Vols' block record and had a career-high 17 rebounds while scoring 14 points. Had that been one of the male players, the stats would have been a banner on the top of the front page. But, what was on your front page on Feb. 5? On the upper right-hand corner, was the line, "VOLS BEAT LSU LSU 59-54." The Lady Vols win was below the fold on the front page of the sports section - nothing on the front page of the newspaper.
I have nothing against Bruce Pearl. In fact, I believe that he is a good coach and he appears to have a great sense of humor. Nonetheless, Pat Summitt is the winningest coach in college basketball. She has eight national championships. Her tournament appearances/wins are phenomenal. Why weren't the Lady Vols featured on the front page and above the fold on the front page of the sports section?
Someone at your newspaper needs to wake up and realize that women's sports are now equal to men's sports, whether you like it or not. It is not uncommon for you to give the men priority over the women. Give Pat Summitt, her coaching staff and players the respect and visibility that they deserve. Put the Lady Vols first.
Mary K. Bruce
Knoxville'

Bottom line to Mary K and the rest of you who don't like reality. When the men and ladies play on the same night, the men should ALWAYS get top billing. WHY? Because they are the BIGGER story! MORE PEOPLE CARE about them. That's just a FACT. And if you don't believe it, let the men make a Final Four and compare it to the reaction the Ladies get when the hang a National Championship banner. I'm telling you right now it won't even be close. That might make me unpopular for saying this. I believe that women's sports has it's place. Nothing wrong with it. If it's your thing, hey cool. No problem here. But it doesn't have the same gravitas than men's hoops in this town. In fact it's not more popular or important ANYWHERE. It's just not. Sorry Mary K.

BTW: 'X' has a special report coming up mid-week giving you a first look at UT's top prospects for next years signing class. Look for it and devour it...

10 Great Reasons To Cheer For the Saints

How Ironic is it that that Vols were in the epicenter of the sports world last night. They were right up the street from the eventual Super Bowl Champion Saints last nights. And they didn't exactly play like champions themselves. You knew the bomb was going to go off on Tennessee last night. Because it always does. I was bracing myself for that one. In fact, that game was making me so crazy that I actually went and listened to the final 10 minutes on the radio. I couldn't take watching that stupidity.

Bottom line: A win's a wins a wins a win. But we are a really stupid basketball team that plays up and down and sideways to whoever we're playing. That LSU team that almost beat us last night will go down as one of the worst teams to ever lace it up in the modern era of SEC player. They have two players who can play at this level and a bunch of guys who couldn't see the court for Louisiana Tech. I would bet you that there are at least 7 college teams in the state of LA that could beat that LSU team that was on the floor last night.

Bob and Burt were hysterical calling the final 10 minutes of that game. You think you're over JP Prince? You should have heard Burt trying to restrain himself. He was really wanting to go off and stopped with 'that's a horrible play'. Seriously, are the folks with UT sports information going to do something on senior night to commemorate JP's national record that will stand forever? This guy is putting up Ruthian like #'s before our very eyes. This is like Joe D's 56 game hitting streak, Gretzky's point total and Tiger's assault on Jack all rolled into one. Has a guy ever fouled more players in the act of shooting a 3 pointer in the final minute of games in a three year career? I have him unofficially at 11 times performing such an act. Somebody over there needs to do some research. Scary thing is he's only going to add to his total before the year is over.

He almost got us beat last night with that non-sense. And that would have been one of the worst losses in school history had it of happened. You think he knows he's heading for some kind of international record and is doing it on purpose. Is there a JP Princeios over in France or something who holds the current record? At this rate, JP is going to walk out of here with at least 15 such fouls. On senior night they ought to bring back Jody Meeks and let Prince foul him one more time in the act of shooting with his parents down there on the floor. Sort of a re-enactment. You think his senior night will be sold out?

BTW: A road win is a road win. Even if it is the ugliest SEC conquest in the Bruce Pearl era. Wow that was a awful game! Chism was the only Vol in double figures. How many bad shots and wasted possessions did we have? How many quick shots in the last 8 minutes. How bout that one sequence where Populist and McBee exchanged air ball threes? Kessling goes 'Populist is going to put up a three....That's not even close....maybe the worst three point attempt I've ever seen.' Classic!!! Burt and Bob were laughing at the possibility of Tennessee losing to that team last night. I kept looking to the LSU bench for Wade Houston grabbing his forearm asking for a foul call. Check out the box score and in the immortal words of Austin Price, devour it! Link

Reasons To Cheer For The Saints:
1.Three Former Vols play for the Saints and only one for the Colts!

2. Manning has already gotten his championship. Let's spread the wealth in Rocky Top.

3. The three former Vols deserve our support too since they delivered big wins over Florida. Marvin Mitchell, Jabari Greer, and Robert Meachem have 5 combined wins from over Florida on the Saints Roster and ZERO wins over Florida on the Colts roster.

4. Fan Base: Saints have one of the coolest fan bases of all time. Turn on 870 AM tonight when Bobby Hebert is on 6 to 9 eastern and listen to how cool those people are! Talking about dead relatives and channelling people and and voodoo and all kinds of ridiculous stuff! Awesome! Colts play in a basketball town!

5. The Unis: Be like Hal Hill and cheer for the team with the best threads. And the Saints have cooler uniforms. That's not even close.

6. Look at the league: Saints play in the NFC where real football is played. As Jackie Butler once said 'It's all about the Lee'!

7. Beano Factor: Beano is a huge Colts fans and he's done enough winning already with his stinkin' Yankees.

8. Conference Affiliation: Colts have as many players from the Big 10 as they do the SEC with 6 aside. Link

9. Conference Affiliation Part II: Saints have 9 players from the SEC.

10. It's just Un-American to cheer against the Saints! And that's the bottom line! Colts left Baltimore and the Saints stayed and were a part of the rebuilding. Don't be a carpet bagger lover!!!

Final Note On Super Bowl Rosters: The Colts have 16 Non- BCS Conference player of their roster. That's over a quarter of their players coming from non-BCS schools. Look it up! While the Saints have 12. That's 28 roughly 28 percent of the players in the World Championship of football coming from non-BCS school and many coming out of Div-AA and even some D-II and D-III guys in there! Look it up and tell me that football recruiting is some king of science. It's global warming. That's what football recruiting is a akin too. Man made global warming......

DD's first class is done. And what a marvelous job he did. The back story on how they got some of these guys to hold is one that must be told. And I can't wait to get some of these guys on and do just that. Just a terrific job by our coaching staff to hold it together.

You want to feel good? Watch this clip of DD and Phillip Fulmer as DD was interviewed last night on CBS College Sports TV last night as part of their signing day extravaganza. Pretty proud of Fulmer's showing here. Let's put the whole band back together. Link

What's really amazing to me is the way some fans focus more on the recruits who got away than the ones who stayed the course. Two signees we had on yesterday stayed interested in Tennessee through three different regimes. Can you imagine that?

Though he's disowning it, do you believe Kiffin sent a tweet saying the following? 'congrats to Tennessee on holding a bunch of our recruits. But we got the ones that matter.' Of course you believe it! Because Kiffin is a clown. And he has no class. And today he has the #1 recruiting class in the country.

The caller CFT who had a real look at the guts of Tennessee's recruiting claims that UT was getting several of those last minute guys that ended up @ USC if PC never goes to the NFL. Say what you want to say about Kiffin... He's low rent.. Classless..Spoiled..Childish...Sophomoric... Moronic..Insufferable..and Inane... But that is one recruiting mo fo...Bottom line...Kiffin gets it done on the recruiting trail..That guy finished like Usain Bolt yesterday. Gotta tip your cap to him. Recruiting cam be a dirty game. And Kiffin is the dirtiest player in the game. Me, I'll take a coach with class who I can identify with and be proud of any day of the week over a guy like Kiffin.

Couple of observations:
Houston Nutt and staff got it done! Where's Arkansas? Some services have them in the 50's? What happened to Brian Kelly and ND? Why the discrepancy between Scout and the other two? How does Fla go from Rivals all time greatest recruiting class as they were telling us leading up to NSD to the #2 class in 2010? How about Wanny @ Pitt? UCLA? Wow! Lot of interesting stories this year! Look at the fossil @ Penn State! How do they do that? Weekend At Bernie's recruiting tactics?
